Metal died in 1993. Only 12 good albums have been released since then (most of them in 1994, being already recorded by 1993). Metal achieved its creative peak in albums like Onward to Golgotha, Pure Holocaust, and The Red in the Sky is Ours, elevating the genre into a legitimate art form. Now, thanks to Slaughter of the Soul and Gojira, all its potential was squandered and the genre has been reduced into being mere gimmick ridden noise for drunk idiots.
>>
>>64535836
>/metal/ hates melodeath because it's too poppy
There were some good albums in the 90's, too bad the genre has become completely shit
>/metal/ hates tech death because it's soulless wank
Zealotry and Diskord are quite liked here, not all tech death needs to be style over substance
>/metal/ hates deathcore because it's total shit
Can't argue with that

>What kind of new death metal do you guys even like?
OSDM revival and there are a few war metal bros, or at least that's how it is for me. /metal/ isn't one person, I speak for myself.

He's a great vocalist but most of his bands are just shit flung together. He gets a lot of praise from avant teens who listen to NIN and Tool.
>>
>>64538612
You really shouldn't give a shit what people on here think of your tastes. There's always going to be someone disagreeing with you, so there's no point in trying to please everyone. Just listen to as much as you can to broaden your tastes, making sure to step out of the metal genre every now and then.

Also, The Serpent and the Sphere is one of my top 5 albums. Absolutely love it. You should listen to Carrion Skies by Fen - someone recommended it to me a while back when I was looking for more Agalloch-esque bands and it's very good in my opinion (which is shit).

Djent is shit.

Not because it fails at being what it sets out to be, but because what it sets out to be, which is to say the aesthetics and values behind it, are shit.

Djent is the musical equivalent of millenial scifi: a gutless, squeaky-clean mess that tries super hard to be simultaneously deep and edgy but fails in both respects, by fetishizing digital aesthetics and monochrome minimalism, which musically translates into super-clean production and staccatto riffs that sound like they're lagging and have no solid groove. And when it (sci-fi) tries to put some emotion into its cold, bland, eerie plastic setting, it comes off as tacky and fake, which is exactly what happens with djent's reverb-drenched melodic sections and whiny clear vocals that come out of nowhere and break any semblance of aggressiveness and immersion. It tries to be super-duper badass and tacticool with its "heavy" breakbeat-like riffs and polyrhythms that are supposed to keep you on the edge of your seat, but at the end of the day you're just watching obvious CG that's even more uncanny due to its advanced state, just like you're listening to obviously uninspired and soulless music whose lack of creativity is only made more obvious by its meaningless technical prowesses. And let's not forget the pretentious song titles like "proprioception", "sentience" and "singularity" that are meant to imitate the pseudo-philosophical rambling you find in the corresponding movies.

It tries to market itself as serious, powerful and extreme in a genre that has already given birth to Tetsuo, Voivod, Robocop, Fear Factory, Gamma Ray, and Blade Runner.

IT'S INDUSTRIAL METAL WITH NONE OF THE GRIT
IT'S CYBERPUNK WITH NONE OF THE EDGE
IT'S SPACE OPERA WITH NONE OF THE FANTASY
IT'S PROG WITH NONE OF THE EMOTIONS

I'm only slightly exaggerating. This is a pasta but it's also my honest opinion so I'm reposting it.

Which is interesting, because I find that perspective to be juvenile. Not hostility, but I just think there's a definite set of rules for what can be considered "juvenile", and really... nothing and everything is juvenile. The only thing that matters is presentation. Any subject can be considered juvenile or adult, depending on how you manipulate the looking-glass.

For example: this album cover. Is it juvenile? How can you tell?

Then being "juvenile" is great, metal's all about being "juvenile" with the balls to accept that you are, that takes a lot of maturity. That's most likely the reason why metal has such a passionate fanbase when compared to the outside, from the outside looking in everything seems autistic and immature, but it takes some real guts to proudly accept yourself as part of that autistic immaturity.
>>
>>64542491
perceived autistic immaturity*.
If I say I like cars and hate motorcycles, then that's how it is. That doesn't make me autistic, it just means I don't like cars. If I like to work with metal instead of working with wood, it doesn't mean anything other than I have a preference based on my experience with them.

Yes, solid bright red font and graphics on black and white image makes reading anything on it a chore.

satanic imagery +poor mock european heraldry + antisemitism denotes an aspiration to edginess that screams "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" at the top of its lungs.

I mean, sure. On the surface this is true. It's a trite sentiment, accept yourself for who you are, but in practice, maybe you aren't actually a good person and you should evaluate why you do the things you do. That last statement isn't meant to target anyone specifically, it is rather a general indictment of the mentality that accepting who you are is the end goal.

Well, 1389 is a Bosnian band, so I wouldn't exactly call it mock-european. Antisemitism is rather often espoused by edgy people, though if you follow one general rule (racism is bad, for this example), then it also follows (through no means other than logic), that generalizations are bad, because racism is hate bred from generalization. I'm going to skip the "edgy" part and just assume you feel all antisemites have no good inherent reason for their feelings, and can't be sympathized with or heard out.
That is a generalization.

in short, your looking glass was chosen the moment you read the title of the album, and that colored (pun intended) your perception of the album art, far beyond the other band's pentagram or the red, black and white text/art juxtaposition.

Something you find garish might be done with a purpose. That's why it's art I suppose.

Seeing as it's a minimal synth band, yeah.

It's appropriate for the album and the tone of the music and I suppose your image might be too, but I don't think that's a good thing. I have worked in a record store for a little over a year at this point and have a pretty good sense of the kind of clientele that purchases metal. Mostly dads that are presumably going through midlife crises and kids that don't think the world understands them. They don't stink as bad as the people that come in for ICP stuff though, so at least metal has that.

ICP reminds me of metal in that there is this unified very ugly aesthetic to everything they put out.

That's because most music is focused on the opposite spectrum of emotion and visual aesthetic. Wholesome, warm, lovely, happy, cool, fresh, sweet, and even primary negative emotions like fear, anger, and sadness. Of course all of these emotions are conveyed in the most normal-as-possible way. Simple, and almost as if the writer of the song has little to no life experience.

>I wouldn't exactly call it mock-european
Not what I meant. It's mock heraldry, meant to look like heraldry albeit with a slightly edgier tilt.

>though if you follow one general rule (racism is bad, for this example), then it also follows (through no means other than logic), that generalizations are bad, because racism is hate bred from generalization
Nope. Generalizations are not bad, they are extremely useful and your ability to discern which generalizations are valuable and which aren't is an extremely important skill.

Race based generalizations however rarely have anything to do with facts and are rarely correct. Apart from that though, hating the jews is incredibly passe, they've been almost completely assimilated more more than a century, yes well before WWII.

Generalizations are obviously highly subject to change due to cognitive biases but generalizations are an integral part of the human thought process. Without them you can get caught in the minutiae of the exception. It's a balance that only comes with time and experience.

>in short, your looking glass was chosen the moment you read the title of the album
I actually noticed the awful choice of cover first and assumed that it was sympathetic to the plight of the jews until I read the cover. It doesn't change the fact that the actual graphic design of the thing is awful.

I'm okay with the aesthetics of anti-art by the way but that clearly isn't what they were doing in that cover.

i really like it. the production is pristine, and the blasting sections like the one in blow your trumpets gabriel are legitimately beautiful. it's also got some top notch riffs and it feels cohesive as an album. what's not to like?

yeah i love that album. one of my favorites from last year. the production is unlike anything else i've heard in bm

Now that I'm getting deeper into BM it's getting harder and harder to find downloads of certain albums. What's the go-to place for getting music?

Unfortunately there's no one place that has everything. You could use SoulSeek and browse people's collections and hope they have what you want, or you could go to Bunalti, or Realm of Metal and look there. or hope to god there's a blogspot out there with an in-tact mediafire upload.

Simple, and almost as if the writer of the song has little to no life experience.
anon, you are so full of shit. Some of the stuff I've posted here as album covers is darker, harder, colder, sadder and even edgier than most metal.

None of those songs are anywhere near as complex as most metal.
>>
When did you grow out of metal /mu/? For me it was around my 17th birthday.
>>
>>64543491
I'm just talking about what draws a lot of people to metal in the first place, really. For a lot of metal fans, the genre itself was the first thing they saw (other than horror movies) that made a subject of the stuff that makes normal people toss and turn at night. The idea that being interested in these things won't make you into a murderer or theistic satanist.

Metalheads have been fighting for a long time, and though a lot of non-metal can meet the same emotional spectrum that metal can, the problem is most often they don't. Most kids don't grow up knowing about prog rock, or noise, or dark electronic music.

A metalhead would be wrong to say that non-metal can't offer the same emotions, but would be right to say that metal is much more noticeable than obscure emotionally-ambiguous "pop" music.

>complexity
I don't give a shit how complex or hard to play it is. I don't listen to music so that I can masturbate to technical accomplishments or musical structure.

If I want that I'll go to Arnold Schoenberg.
>>
>>64543491
Industrial music is extremely samey in theme just like Metal.
>>
>>64543700
There have been studies done on music appealing to people based on an expectation of sound and then subverting that expectation. Complexity is important, just not in that masturbatory sense.
