It's like they're allergic to trying to write something good. Every riff they write needs to be as cluttered and frantic as can be with no regard to tone or direction.
Off the bat this is just another death metal album in name only, it has the growls, it has the distortion, and it has the hyper fast drumming, but everything is assembled so mechanically together, topped off with such digital cleanness and shiny pristine, like it wants to seem heavy but is so ashamed to be a part of the scene. There's no passion here, it's like some snobby music professors tried their hands at making "intelligent" death metal, they wrote a checklist for what they thought would be necessary to count as death metal and then filled it with needless complexity for that "intelligent" aspect. Riffs vary between being fast and intricate slurries of notes to being basic, but still fast, death metal chugs you've heard a million times over, everything wrapped up in a brick walled to fuck production where bass is only audible when the band wants to remind you that they do indeed have a bassist. Songs are long, aimless, and twist and turn without any bit of focus. Riff (and I use that term quite loosely here) leading into riff leading into solo leading into riff comprises the song writing ideas here, with some occasional orchestral samples thrown in to make this album seem grander than it is. It's a nauseating and headache inducing experience, while not as annoying as Brain Drill or Monumental Torment, it's equally as flashy and unnecessary. Completely irredeemable garbage with not one decent moment in its duration.
Is there any metal out there that starts another riff in the midst of one riff? Not sure if that description helps; I guess I am trying to find instances of what's going on in Terry Riley's In C but in metal.

No but music professors have an understanding of compositions in many ways, not by adding just odd time signatures, sweep arpeggios and high tempos with dissonant harmonies in many applied forms that sound alike. Thats what SOP mostly is. Well thats just concentrating on harmonies but i think metal goes much further than that with its sound. I know metal still pretty much has reused most of the stuff that were already established in popular music before metal, such as structures, rhythms, harmonies and pretty much everything, but metal still has created it unique chaotic elements that fit the basic idea of metal trying to dissect itself from alot of foundational elements of popular music. For example blast beats and vocals.

How does one Headbang to Slam ?
Why do people hate on this album? They say that the production is awful, but the guitars are nice and crunchy with the differences between what both guitars are playing is obvious. They say that the vocals are awful compared to later AtG but they are a lot more unhinged here. The worst is probably the "boring, nothing standout" comments because the riffs here are so much more technical and varied than their later stuff.
Do people only hate on it because they listened to SotS first and came in with the mindset that this should sound like that?
