lets do this before moving on to a new list

>The Rita - Gamzatti
>noise

What is going on here? Aside from a wall of harsh noise that while it's not that bad, there is nothing here that is not offered elsewhere and at a premium. Looking further into this album, it just seems that the there is this idea that is centered around ballet dancing. But its hard to see where this idea is explored in the music, is it just a concept or was dancing used as some sort of sample that contributed to the wall of noise. It's not really apparent and further reading just comes off as a pretentious art school thesis paper.

If you like noise, check this out, its not that bad but its also nothing super impressive.

Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape (2001)
>avant-garde metal, progressive metal

I pretty much had the opposite reaction to this than I expected. I thought I'd like the more out-there, avant-garde bits (being a poseur and all), but I actually really like the more generically metal bits and think the out-there bits are completely superfluous. They're doing cool things with their sonic experimentation, like adding more poppy, electronic sounds to metal music, but it just doesn't mesh with the metal at /all/. But the metal is wonderful: riffy, melodic BM. Good stuff.

i'm now just realizing how little i change my name compared to the rest of y'all

Silvio Rodríguez - Días y flores (1975)
>nueva trova

Pretty damn gorgeous singer/songwriter music. If this was stripped down to just Rodriguez and his guitar, it'd be absolutely phenomenal, but a lot of the arrangements here are overblown and detract from the quality of the songs, but there's no denying that these songs are exceptional, and they're still very good in their overproduced state.

first four results are in boys

>Basic Channel - BCD 2 (co)
Better than the first installment indeed, if not by a huge margin. It's got the Basics, it's got the Channels, and it's a thing that exists and it bangs or something? 3.0+

>P-Model - Scuba
Not sure how this new wave shit came to be considering their synth punky zolo roots, but there you go. it's good. Doesn't have a lot of standouts (the more airy tracks like the opener and Fish Song are the best ones though) but it's consistent and pleasant. 3.0

>Ermine Coat - Faulty Landscape
I made this record. It is mine. I did this. 1.5+

>[bleu] - Clara Altantsegtseg
An abundance of pretentious titles and also actually good music. It has piano and drums and is kinda like post-rock but more dissonant and not as fond of pointless crescendos (the point is that there is no point). Maybe meanders too much for its own good, it exhausts itself after a while, but fair enough, I'll take it. 3.0

It's a weird generational gap. In the 00's everyone around me--myself included--thought they were the greatest thing happening to music at the time. Now it seems lost on a lot of younger people or people on /mu/ that didn't necessarily grow up with it. Or whatever you have against them, etc., etc.

Which I can understand--a lot of the themes they touch on have been explored a lot since their last album. To put it in perspective, vaporwave wasn't in existence since we last heard from them. They almost seem irrelevant after so long off.

Okay, I've noticed some of you have 100 point rating systems. How the fuck could you justify this? I get using 5, 10, or even 20 point rating systems because it's all relative to other albums. But how the fuck does an album earn a single decimal point as apposed to losing it? Are you just lying, a pitchfork drone, or is there some criteria or a mathematical formula that you actually use to calculate an album's score out of 100?

>>64510687

I've also never got this, but I don't know anyone that does this besides montie.

I use a 20 point system with + and - just as tiebreaking elements in tournies. Other than that I'd just use a 10 point system.

Nara Leão - Nara (1964)
>bossa nova, MPB

Bossa nova is a genre that doesn't really experiment with it's tried and true formula too often, which results in a lot of really pleasant albums that all sound exactly the same. And this is one of them. It's a super pleasant, breezy bossa nova album with a great vocalist that sounds indistinguishable from any other bossa album from the time period, completely faceless and indistinct. But pleasant and pretty as all hell, so points for that.

One started off with me waking up at 3 am in the dream and realizing that Radiohead are playing a secret gig at Coachella. I switch on the stream and Thom Yorke (looking like a Thom-Jesse Hughes hybrid with a Wayne Coyne style outfit) is covering Adele's Hello with Lorde. No comments.

The second one was about him playing a secret gig at a whorehouse or something, which was also strange.

talk about what you are listening to, good or bad, pick up a dumbass name if you want (lovecraft references are so hot right now t b h ), and sometimes attach meaningless scores to albums via numbers, colors, or in one user's case, pictures of david mitchell and or robert webb

I'll continue with the tourney tomorrow, but like I said, I was travelling for a bit and didn't have proper internet so I was stuck to spotify stuff.
Also name change?

Can - Future Days (1973)
>krautrock
I only heard Tago Mago before for some reason, but I enjoyed this a lot more. The jazzy feel and the progressions are really nice.

This gets a +.

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly (1982)
>jazz pop, sophisti-pop
The jazz instrumentation isn't all that bad but it goes bloody nowhere. This is probably what you expect from a poppy record, but it's still annoying. The singing is not bad, but it's slightly too sweet for my taste.
It's definitely not bad and there are some good songs but it could've been so much more.
Also sophisti-pop is such a dumb genre name. On the same level as IDM.

This gets a ~.

Andrew Hill - Point of Departure (1965)
>avant-garde jazz
The instruments are so balanced here, it's really good. One minute the piano is dominant and then the sax or the trumpet effortlessly takes over, until they all come together in a moderate freak-out.

This gets a +.

Faust - Faust IV (1973)
>krautrock
This is nearly just as fun as their s/t, which I love. I really love how they manage to be so fun in their inventiveness. This is slightly less cohesive than the s/t, making it a slightly lesser listen. Seems like it's always a good time with Faust, what other records of theirs should I check out?

This gets a +.

Shu-de - Voices from the Distant Steppe (1994)
>Tuvan throat singing
I really like the sound of throat singing, because it sounds so powerful. This falls a little short because it is more a showcase of all the different forms and techniques writhing Tuvan throat singing than an actual album, making it more interesting than actually good. Not all the songs are throat singing. There's a harp solo and some other songs, but they have the same problem (or actually, they add to the problem by making it even more showcase-y).

This gets a ~.

Should I drop the first 32 reivews once I'm done? I don't think I'll get my last rec tonight before that but I still wanna get these out. What do you guys think?

If it's fun you're looking for, I'd say Faust So Far is even more fun than I and IV, if a bit less blatantly experimental and noisy

Also, in my experience, Future Days only gets better with time, while Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi somewhat diminish, so I'm glad you enjoyed it right off the bat.

Speaking of which, what happened to Ege Bamyasi? That used to be the premier /mu/ meme, and I haven't seen it mentioned outside of a chart thread in months.

Reviews pt. 1: I Didn’t Want to Write an Essay for 64 Reviews so Most of These are Pretty Short or Just Stupid-ass Remarks Edition

GFR
The Crafty Ape – Crippled Black Phoenix
Everthing I love and hate about prog crafted into one album. Amazing, really. It’s conceptual but overly indulgent and up its own ass. The songs are creative and out there, but there’s also some stupid shit like the unjustified length and silent parts. Last track would’ve been fantastic without it.
6.0-

GFR (2nd spot)
The Glass Bead Game
Messed up on this one and listened to it before Sunshower :/ anyways, it was fantastic. The building arangements on the second and final track, the minimal and primitivist influences, god. It’s an intense but calming experience. Would totally rec for Americ Prims (I’m lookin’ at you Nat).
8.5-

Mark And
Sugar Babe – Songs
Some very nice pop music, and while I do like the rotation of voices and the bright sounds, some of the parts were a little too daper for me. Dangerously close to twee stuff, and instrumentally varied occasionally.
7.0+

Eruditey
Sibylle Baier – Colour Green
Some really endearing Singer/Songwriter stuff. I was much more interested in this girl’s lyrics than her actual music, which on second listen really made me realize what I was truly enjoying. Not bad at all, but a little too much indie apathy for my ears.
6.0+

Yamir
Don Cherry – ‘mu’ First Part
“Nice Drums”
8.0+
Orz
goreshit – mlsfaw
I cannot see the appeal of “lolicore” man. Apparently this Goreshit guy is the most acclaimed guy from this genre, but fuck it’s just so unsatisfying to me. It’s just high pitched and distorted small Japanese girls over breakcore, which I’m also not really a fan of. Bad.
2.5+

Terminus
Frankie Knuckles – Presents His Greatest Hits From TRAX
Deep House. Good. Damn Good. A mish mash of disco, new wave, and synthpop elements in here too. Real intriguing stuff.

Kevorkian
Cornelius – Fantasma
Daaaaaaaamn. Loungy psych plunderphonics. Reminded me quite a bit of the books but even more all over the place. Loved this shit. Interesting side note: This guy also joined the remaining members of Fishmans for their “Fishmans+” EP, A Piece of Future. Considering how much I’ve loved Shibuya-kei I should probably check out the other essentials from this genre. Thanks Kev, your recs are always stellar.
9.0-

Warm Sofa
Donald Fagan – The Nightfly
Some amazing production work on this sophisti-pop album, but the songs are pretty dull and lifeless imo. A lot of light jazz mixed with kind of boring rock music. It’s got a few nice moments, but I’m really not a fan of anything I’ve heard from the Steely Dan camp
3.5+

Jimmy Jazz
Peaking Lights – 936
The first track was pretty great, but I felt like this album was well over an hour when it was really just 40 minutes. It’s so damn repetitive and somewhat relaxing because of that, but I felt just uninterested the entire time.
5.0-

Damo Eye
Boredoms – 77 Boa Drum
Really good improve, but somewhat shallow payoff. I loved the drone-y percussion and steady build-ups, but I felt like the effect could’ve been magnified for me if the songs were about half an hour shorter. Would’ve been an insane live experience, but I think such a build-up only holds tension for so long, and the payoff was much worse on the second track. Still love these guys, just not my fav release by them.
5.5-

Triangle
Laddio Bolocko – The Strange Warmings of Laddio Bolocko
Shit was bonkers yo. Only track I wasn’t in love with was Y Toros simply because the length didn’t really serve the hypnotic violence like the other tracks on some parts. Other than that I loved this.

Hasture
Rites of Spring – End on End
It’s emo Minor Threat. What the fuck you wanna know? Favorites were “Deeper Than Inside” and “By Design.” Crazy attitude and lyricism pack this thing to the brim. Not as impactful or raw as Minor Threat, but what is really?
8.0-

Are You Insanity
Van der Graaf Generator – Godbluff
A little cliché prog, but I can’t help but like this. It’s detailed, well-flowing, and emotional. The first half is far better than the second, though.
6.5-

Co
Neat Beats – Cosmic Surgery
Some pretty damn crafty downtempo hip hop instrumentals. While I loved the boom bap aspect of it, I found the bass to be waaaaay overbearing. I also found the contrast between the downtempo “chillness” and chiptune glitchiness to be a contrast that wasn’t always welcome by my ears.
6.0-

Moonjacques
Big Mama Thornton – In Europe
Really rad blues material here. I loved this girls voice and passion.
7.5-

Natkingcole
Khun Narin Electric Phin Band – s/t
Psych coolness, but why in fuck did the first and lass tracks have to be so long? There’s like 0 justification for a track to be that long with so little variation. Sometimes the spaciousness gives it a distinct psychedelic air to it, but it loses its flair around the 7 minute mark on both tracks.
5.5+

I’M FISH’s Mom
Fleetwood Mac – Rumors
Sorry, ma. I just wasn’t a fan of the pop rock mixed with the folk/country elements. Had a few great tracks like “Go Your Own Way” and “The Chain” but was mostly composed of misses for me.
4.0+

Torts
Last Poets – This is Madness
Angry-ass extremely black poetry. This is what I imagine the /pol/ infestites like Montie think TPAB sounds like. Funky shit that one could argue is “proto-rap.” I loved when the repetition was building and intense, rather than when it was often annoying and dull.
7.0-

Coil – Backwards
One of my favorite Coil outputs honestly. This has my favorite versions of “Amber Rain,” “A Cold Cell,” and “Fire of the Mind.” Production here is great and only a few dips in the tracklisting.
7.5+

Adam (friend)
Lil Yachty – Lil Boat the Mixtape
I feel like I could actually enjoy trap, but I just really didn’t like this at all. Why the fuck does he use autotune while he’s talking but when he’s singing like shit he doesn’t? Cheesiest shit I’ve heard in my life with only the features showing any talent.
2.0+

Charlie (friend)
Destroyer – Kaputt
I really like a lot about Destroyer. His voice, his songwriting ability, and the bittersweet sounds he brings on his albums. I don’t know how I felt about the watered down smooth jazz or his extremely apathetic attitude (if he tried to give a shit with his signing he would probably have one of the best voices in popular music rn) though.
6.5+

GIVINGBEAR
Santigold - 99 cents
Really dull new wave-y electropop. I enjoyed parts of the first track and humorous feature on “Who Be Lovin Me” but really that’s all. Not much that’s enjoyable here for me
3.5-

Herb Guy
Le Sacre Du Printemps
Good.
8.0-

!GZO15gPedo
Black Tape for a Blue Girl - Remnants of a Deeper Purity
Wicked ambient atmosphere filled to the brim with cheese. I want to say it would be better with less lengthy songs, but the album’s atmosphere is its most redeeming quality, so I guess what I’m saying is I just want a better album. Not that bad, though.
4.5+

Kanzler
Les Sculpteurs De Vinyl – Memory and Money
Very mind bending pieces here, but almost nothing worth of substance I found. Very dense and filling, but almost nothing sampled really fits in with each other, as if none of the samples were put together with how they interacted with other songs making it feel just lazy. Not my brand of plunderphonics and would’ve rather had cohesive pieces rather than 10 seconds of unrelated noise layered over another constantly.

Transcendental Boy
The World/Inferno Friendship Society – Red-Eyed Soul
Ya know what this reminds me of? “Pretty. Odd.” By Panic at the Disco (except actually good). This is really instrumentally deep for “punk rock.” It’s theatrical and almost gaudy in parts. I enjoyed it, but couldn’t help but not be in love with some of the “pop punk-y” parts. Anyone into “show tune-y” music needs to hear this ASAP.
6.5+

GreenLamp
Trophy Scars – Never Born Never Dead
I’m almost never into modern post-hardcore and this is no exception. In fact, this was pretty bad. I enjoyed some of the bluesier parts and the heartland rock sounds, but it was so damn cheesy and the vocals were so unappealing to me.

Wait, is that a LOST sample???
3.0+

GaussHaus
Huw V Williams – Hon
Was surprised on how lively and full this sounds with only a few instruments. I only count bass, trumpet, piano, drums, accordion, and sax, but usually only a few at a time. This is probably the album’s biggest flaw and positive aspect. It’s sparse and interesting, but often relies on repetition and emptiness for a few of the tracks like “Retrogressive Shredfest.”
5.5+

Triangle’s friend Sarah
Myriam Gendron – Not So Deep as a Well
Pleasantly simple folk music. I love these girls’ voices and songwriting, though it often is a bit repetitive.
