>Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
I love the sound that Sonic Youth has, but these early records are just so inconsistent, There are some seriously great tracks on here like Brave Men Run (In My Family) and Death Valley 69' but they're just let down by lacklustre tracks like Ghost Bitch. I hear the next few albums are great though so looking forward to that.
6/10
>Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Better than his first but I'm still not in love with it. The songwriting here is solid and I really liked some tracks like Girl From the North Country and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. However, I lost interest towards the end, it all started to sound a bit too same-y and the harmonica just got kinda annoying. I usually have problems with most folk singer-songwriters though so maybe it's just that.

LRD and TMR are probably the best albums there, but if you've got a few hours to spare, the Julius Eastman compilation is well worth the time.
I would not recommend Twin Infinitives. It's notoriously difficult, and even then, not that rewarding when it finally "clicks". It's probably safe to just call it bad at that point.

>mfw when everything else on that site is anime and silent hill soundtracks
Got halfway through the first round and it has been really good so far.
>Ricardo Villalobos - Fizheuer Zieheuer [Yamir]
This was some nice minimal techno. Despite it being so minimal it was actually surprisingly danceable and that solo in the title track is some gud stuff.
This gets a +
>Brötzmann / Bennink - Schwarzwaldfahrt [GFR]
This was fucking amazing. Free improvisation with a really sparse sound by Brotzmann and Bennink who mostly play on wind instruments but also incorporate stuff like banjo and viola. This is mixed together with some nature field recordings I can only guess are from Schwarzwald, bird callings and water rushing, which really oppose the rawer/harsher sounds from the instruments.
This gets a +, but could easily go up to a !.
>The Temptations - Cloud Nine [∆^3]
I haven't heard a lot of soul before, but I should get into it. This was groovy af and I felt like moving my hips the whole time. Good, catchy songs, that really invite you to sing along.
This gets a +.
>Jam City - Classical Curves [JimmyJazz]
I didn't like this. The sound was too focused on the bass (probably inherent to the genre, so I probably just don't like this stuff) and that took away from the danceable record it could have been imo.
This gets a -.

>>64479841
You ever think taste doesn't really exist?
Yeah, of course? People like all different kinds of music.
I mean, certain note combinations are more pleasant than others. At its basest, music is pretty objective. But we're not just sitting around to perfect Pythagorean scale tones or something. It's impossible to account for and quantify all the extra nuances a piece of music may have, especially on the scale of an album.
>>64481668
It's not bait. It just doesn't seem like a coincidence that most of the albums everyone seems to love are good, regardless of genre or style or whatever
Rocketship - A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness (1996)
>twee pop
Rocketship does twee exceptionally well, with great songs like "I Love You Like the Way That I Used to Do" and "We're Both Alone", but they're experiments with other genres like shoegaze and almost kinda ambient-ish soundscaping fall flat. I don't even really know why, but the songs that deviate from exceptionally written twee are just lousy. But the twee songs are great, and they do make up most of the short album, so it's a good listen.

When you say "everyone seems to love" you mean 'have a high average rating' which may be a bit different, but sort of answers your own question. (...maybe?) If that's how you want to define "good"--enjoyed more by a greater number of people--then go for it. Just keep in mind selection bias, where people often listen to what's available or immediately presented, so they're generally not great empirical judges of goodness, a fairly relative metric.
what the buck is up everypony so why's montie a neo-fascist what've I missed
Listened to pic related which was excellent. Really tender and intimate even for a phil project, nice to hear some romantic lyrics that weren't crowded by metaphor, really gave this release a added emotional edge that a lot of Mount Eerie projects lack. Also surprisingly melodic for a phil release, the first track even packs something akin to a hook, this actually helps build mystery and tension better then the production on some of his more recent releases. Also dug the female backing vocals, although I did check out Eric's Trip I can't say I'm a fan.
>>64481732
Btw, not trying to be condescending or anything. It's actually a pretty intriguing question the more I think about it, and I'm trying to work out answers that make the most sense to me.

>hat the buck is up everypony so why's montie a neo-fascist what've I missed
Yeah I clearly missed something too. I haven't actually seen him do anything too terrible yet, but everyone treats him like the antichrist around here.
Rothko Chapel, the place, is pretty cool. If any of you get out to Houston, make time for it.
Rothko Chapel, the musical piece by Morton Feldman, is superb, but MUST be heard in the chapel to be appreciated. It's a fully articulate and immersive artistic experience, more than could be expected. Most artists, regardless of their medium, will say that they achieved portraying 15-30% percent of their vision (if I remember the figure correctly- it is astonishingly low). Today's experience felt fully realized.
Some people will tell you the chapel is an intensely spiritual place, and there are people meditating inside regularly. Some people walk in, take half a look, and walk out.
I'm leaning closer towards spiritual experience. I walked in, put on my headphones, and put on Feldman. The music gave what would normally be somewhat underwhelming experience a startling new dimension, and heightened the already prominent sense of history. The paintings are absolutely daunting in scale. And they aren't just black, some are intoned with red, with purple. And there are subtle details in some- also made more poignant by Feldman.
Yesterday, I read from Stephen O' Malley's Twitter that he visited the chapel... Yesterday. I wish I'd thought to go then, instead, because I could have met half of Sunn O))).
Fuck.
But I realized that their music would also be suitable for the environment (Soma referred to the chapel as a 'holy place'). So, after I listened to Feldman, I had to leave the chapel because there was a wedding taking place there. I had lunch and came back, and I put on Alice from Monoliths and Dimensions, which was absolutely perfect to hear while gazing at the paintings, followed by Blood Swamp from Altar, which wasn't as good there as Alice.
The chapel is simple and unimposing to start, but seat yourself below a painting on the unpolished black stone floor, and the power and complexity of it stands over you like a mountainous wave, just as it begins to crest.
Does anyone have the lyrics to Rallizes' The Last One? Someone posted them once but I can't find it on the archive.

This is what my albums would sound like if I knew how to make music. This album is the sound that I've been trying so hard to achieve, and failed so many times. It's one of the most beautiful ambient albums I've ever listened to. Hopefully now that I can hear it somewhere besides my head I can figure out how to recreate that sound. Thanks jimmyjazz for finding the album I wanted to make.
listening to titties andronicus, and the best way i can describe it is like this generation's London Calling, but without the importance that that album had to the music scene, and with lame speech samples.
>>64482462
Wait no, I found the perfect way to describe it: It's London Calling meets Funeral. Think about it, it has the faux-epicness that's all over Funeral, but with the punk rock edge from London Calling.
>>64482419
Before I left I put on Kyema by Elaine Radigue, which with it's religious vistas and stature was in line with the chapel's identity, but couldn't hope to contend with Sunn or Feldman as an environmental soundtrack.
It was a great time. I'll be returning in the future. I hope to find and visit many more places with environmental soundtracks.

like i said, london calling meets funeral. the mixture works well, but two bad things don't always make a good. in this case it made a mediocre mix, it does feel like a massive and grand concept album (unlike funeral) so at least it succeeds in that. the first 2 or 3 songs are pretty good, but it kinda dives into mediocrity after that. i don't like when albums sound this big and epic. im not saying it's a bad thing to sound like that, it's just not really my thing.

Wonderfully dark and brooding prog album that is a bit simple and clumsy, compositionally, but is really fun to listen to. It's almost like a French version of KC's Red, except not as good. i've gotta check that album out, i like sing to god a lot.
and there's my month.
>>64485497
Good run for you there, eh? I should probably relisten to Conquistador. I haven't listened to it in a good while, and I've kind of forgotten what it sounds like.
>>64485666
>inb4 nat gets more requests to change shit
Speaking of which, why isn't s/t in the meme section?
>>64485824
i'll change shit, i just won't/can't add anything.
and i want it to be, but it's a pain in the ass to change that section and center it, and I can't think of anything that should be dropped.
>>64485824
>Speaking of which, why isn't s/t in the meme section?
suicide is no joking matter, you douche
>>64485864
>I can't think of anything that should be dropped.
what about Daikanjyo? nobody fucking talks about that one
>>64485824
yep, very good one. The album I'm listening to now isn't so good though, so that'll even it out.
Make sure to really pay attention to Conquistador, a lot is in the details for me.

Obviously!
Well I was planning to listen to Mantra today. However, the shit is not downloading so I might listen to something else. Going to the city for lunch to watch Leicester, so I better do all my chilling now.
I also got a book on History Of Jazz that I will use for exploration in the summer. Karmien helped me a lot with appreciating classical, so I hope this will do the same.
>>64486203
It's Kamien, without the R.
You've been doing this wrong since after the first five posts about it or sth, but I keep forgetting to tell you.
>>64486289
Wew lad, thanks for pointing that out!
>>64486327
Haha, I found out when I was looking for it on the web, because I became interested. I couldn't find it for the life of me until I found out it was Kamien :)
>>64485724
Thanks for reminding me, I need to marathon the Gameshark trilogy as well.

Various Artists - O Sister! The Women's Bluegrass Collection
>Bluegrass (duh)
I'm having a weekend away with my family and we were at some kind of visitor's centre for a trail we were going to do and they had this album which seemed pretty interesting. I hadn't really heard bluegrass before, but for some reason I guessed I'd like women doing it more so than men. It was kind of average but the track by some Alison Krauss were quite good, so maybe I'll see if she has some solo stuff. Overall I guess bluegrass isn't too much of my thing, but I'll try some more before judging.
This gets a ~.
>>64486601
thanks for the lesbians
>>64486688
You're welcome. I have lesbians for days, don't be afraid to ask.
>>64486181

Woven Hand - Woven Hand (2002)
>alt-country, folk rock
16 Horsepower's sister band, and about equal in quality, at least keeping in mind what I've heard from both bands. There's a lot less gothic influence here, focusing a lot more on pastoral folk rock, and it's done very well. There's still a big sense of unease and anxiety here, but it's toned down in favor of pretty guitars and brush drum work. There's a few flourishes here I don't like, such as the gaudy strings, and a few tunes miss their mark, but I like this album a lot.
3.0+
and my next month's hyper avant calendar.
Fred's voice is very comforting, very reminiscent of Blind Willie Johnson but not as raw.
I'll drop the first 16 reviews when they're ready.
>>64476059
recs? Or did you give them already?
>>64487692
i gave them already but

I am still unsure whether the TON album should be there. It is a really good album but I am sure unsure of my third pick! Very and Sampling Virus are constant but the third pick I am always in flux about.
>>64485941
(Almost) 9 AM memes here!
I really want to make a calendar too but with my Outsider house list, Japanoise list and Prince I think I am good. Plus, I would probably fuck it up either way because I take so long on deciding on albums.
Like Hanatarash's 2. I have listened to it like five times and I still can't decide if I love it or hate it.
>>64482265
>so why's montie a neo-fascist what've I missed
Nothing I just like to accuse people of fascism when I really, really, really don't like them.
>>64486065
Put Daikanjyo back on top, it's like the most universally loved album in /daily/ p much. Why is Eureka on top btw? And why the fuck is the ziggurat there, there's a few people here who absolutely adoreren it but there's a ton of people who are indifferent towards it.
>>64487427
Names please!! Get hype for Route 13 to the Gates of Hell!!
>>64489853
Feel ya on Ziggurat. Decent but often comes off as cheesy and repetitive

I'm listening to Zeni Geva's Desire For Agony and it sounds like a toned down version of Godflesh with more post-hardcoreness.

Listened to the new Contraktor, it is still really good.

Has there been a sync-listenalong yesterday?
>Daniel Bachman - Orange Co. Serenade
Still trying to fill the void that Fahey's death left on you? Then this is the album for you! It's some of the best american primitivism that's out there, heavily influenced by Fahey (although literally everyone in that genre is, you can really hear it in this album). I especially love the droney violin? or whatever string instrument he also adds at parts, it adds to the beauty of the album.
>>64492478
Daniel is so good
>>64492355
no?
okay, looks like not many people heard it yet
then as usual listenalong of Stocki's Mantra in 90 minutes

Wavves - King of the Beach
Not really that interesting, has some fun moments on the album, but overall I don't really have a strong opinion on this
Deafheaven - New Bermuda
some of the major scale breakdowns made me wew
there was some pretty good drums in there
the clean sections kinda rubbed me the wrong way... I believe it's the phaser effects put on the guitar, it sounds hollow
