There's something I can't understand about doom metal and I hoped you guys might be able to help me. Doom has a shit ton of subgenres (funeral doom, death-doom, sludge, stoner) but I can never find many good examples of traditional doom. The only old bands playing trad doom that I see mentioned are Sabbath, St. Vitus and Pentagram. How can so many bands create so many different subgenres from three bands whose important albums were released years apart? Was there some sort of a trad doom scene in the 80s that I'm missing? Or is trad doom just not played by many bands because there are so many subgenres you'll easily end up in one of them?
