just finished building my pedalboard,
I've got a few pedals but nothing special, however i want to get a few pedals to fill up my board.
The zoom g3 is great for reverbs and delays so i think i'll be keeping that for now, however i want a few more .

As a reference point, I'm into johnny greenwood, tom morello, john frusciante, matt bellamy.

any ideas on what i should be spending my cash on to cover as many of those sounds as possible?

I'm planning on building a pic related from a scratch as I'm a poorfag. As I have no idea on what I need for the head or any circuits on it, help me out.
I literally only know that the sound goes through it and that's pretty much all I know. Where can I study amp head building online (for free)?

Hi /gg/, I want a reverb for my bass, what should i choose ?
>>
>>63689617
What's so hard about googling 'diy guitar amp' or something along those lines.
>>
>>63689654
If you're a poorfag like me, I would buy a boss multi effects board. Like 350 for a low quality one.

Pretty good IMO
>>
>>63689008
I hate how overrated everything Fender is.
Now I'm not saying they're any bad, but their reputation and the fact everyone speaks so much praise about them is nauseating, especially when you see so much options as good as they are.
That same reputation also shadows some of the glaring faults, like the typical P bass having only one pickup, or whatever problem offsets seem to be riddled with.

>>63689617
As much as you can easily build the cab with just documentation (since basically they're big boxes of certain sizes with speakers in them), you shouldn't try to build a cab from scratch by yourself unless you have advanced knowledge in electronics, because you can basically get killed.

>>63689654
I wouldn't recommend reverb for bass, it gets far too messy and your bandmates will probably hate you.
>>
>>63689735

It's okay anon, we need a wall of sound
>>
>>63689769

It's literally the best sound you could get out of a bass. Why have other options when you have the best one at your disposal?

If you have no knowledge in electronics and SS amps, I suggest starting with something way easier like a pedal. Building an amp from scracth is no easy task

my Les Paul Special ll has a three-way switch on it that says "treble" and "rythm."

It's not, there's no "best sound" for bass, and there's no reason a bass in that price range should have only one pickup.
This kind of limited, narrow minded mindset needs to stop.

>>63690056
I'm not too sure how the slight modulations like diffusion or reflection would translate from a guitar reverb to a bass reverb, since you aren't working with the same frequencies.

Quick question because pedals are confusing, if I don't have an effects loop in my amp, can I buy an effects loop pedal to take advantage of that feature without having it in my amp?

anyone know/have any good strat-body derivatives?

>>
>>63691714
seems like polyeurethane to me. I got some solder on the back and the resulting damage gave me a bit better of an idea. The flames are a sticker or a non-stick film beneath the clearcoat. It's also possible they are screen printed. They have transparency to them and my guess is a transparent sticker would be more difficult to produce than stickers, so i guess screen printing is more likely. Body is solid basswood if the other similar models and the weight are anything to go on. This is a pretty rare model, not that that means much.
>>
>>63691921
here's a close up of the damage. The damage goes all the way to bare wood. The paint seems very thin, but it doesn't have any transparency. I'm not sure what they use but if they can put it on this thin they must be saving a ton. No idea about the clear but my guess is still polyeurethane. It is pretty shiny.

>>63691751

This picture shows the texture of the decal. I don't have any idea what it is. It has a gradient transparency that doesn't show up well with flash.
>>
>>63692391
No flash, I'm gonna stop posting pictures now.

Anyways I'm thinking of converting it to a short scale. It'd be a shame to lose the cool headstock, and the work I've done on the frets(best job I've done so far), but I was really hoping it'd be a short scale when I bought it, and my other guitar is also 25.5". Seems a bit silly to convert the tele so there you have it. Also, the neck is pretty flimsy. Can be fun to use for a poor man's vibrato, but it's not very practical for remaining intonated regardless of posture.

Definitely a screen printing of some sort.

I have a cheap guitar from a starter pack from Zellers, the back was painted red, and the top had this weird foto-flame finish on top with the same dot pattern as your picture. All coated with a pretty thick clear coat.
>>
>>63692356
How they sound is mainly affected by the pickups and electronics but is also affected by the bridge and nut and scale length, playability and durability is affected by the neck shape, scale length fretboard radius and fret type as well as overall build quality which includes wood grades, tuning stability is affected by tuners google guitar anatomy. in an acoustic guitar the wood affects the overall tone of the guitar, whereas on an electric it is highly debated whether wood affects anything other than the look or feel of an unfinished or clear coated guitar, which says something as if something such as the wood actually affected the tone to any large enough degree then there wouldn't be so many debates.

>>
>>63692915
that's a decently hefty budget dude, you have a ton of options.

Personally I'd go for a cheap MIJ Fender, there's a ton of good models sub-1k, and I think there's a few American lines below 1k too.
>>
>>63692765
I've been considering a headstock reshape for a while but you pretty much need a band saw or maybe a table saw, which I lack. Maple is tough to work with.

You might try stubbing the lower horn to a sort of jaguar look. Wouldn't be a terrible Idea to add a chrome control plate of some kind if you are into that sort of look. Since you've got a swimming pool, might as well add an ungodly amount of pickups and switches so you can feel superior.

Had a Special, loved the pickups (Texas Specials sound much better than Fat 50's) but hated the headstock.

The Special also has shitty plastic inlays, no hard case, a worse tremolo (6-point instead of 2-point) in the strat and no micro-tilt.

That being said, the Special this year is being offered in Sonic Blue/Rosewood (they don't typically offer rosewood) which is fucking gorgeous and a nice addition to the boring color range. Also a greasebucket tone circuit which is also dope.

I think both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'd probably get the Special just for the Sonic Blue color and buy a third-party case.

I love the headstock actually. No hard case is fine with me, I don't gig at all. Is the 6 point really that bad compared to the 2 point? I'm just gonna deck it.

I heard bad things about the micro tilt, basically how it will make a bump on the higher frets.

naptha is overkill on a guitar body. Not that it's too abrasive, just that it's a waste of your naptha. warm water is good enough.

>>
>>63693365
>Is the 6 point really that bad compared to the 2 point?
Yeah, it kinda is. Tuning stability is better, there's not as much stress on the wood as the 6-point and the tremolo action is smoother.

But then again, there are 60 year-old strats out there with the 6-point tremolo that are just fine.

I'd still get the Sonic Blue Special because I'm that superficial.

Absolute beginner when it comes to pickups here, is there any reason why I shouldn't get a set of high output pickups and just roll the volume down for cleaner stuff? I mean, that does means that I can use less gain on my amp, and that means that it would sound cleaner/better when I roll the volume down as I find that higher gain + low volume has less clarity in comparison to lower gain + more volume, as well as the fact that split high output pickups have about the same impedance as regular single coils, couple that with 500k, or maybe even higher, pots and It should make them sound close enough to singles, my point is: what will I be losing when going high output instead of medium output?

On a 6-point trem you have six screws screwed directly onto the wood and you use a lever to constantly push and pivot the bridge against these screws. The 2-point tremolo uses a different fixation method that doesn't put stress on the wood as you use the tremolo.

I've had a buddy's MIJ strat with a 6-point to completely break and rip out the piece of wood that the screws are on, since it's just a relatively thin block of wood separating the tremolo through-body cavity and the bridge pickup cavity.

Fuck this shit I'm going with a Tele. So on the special and the standard.. The special has a vintage bridge. Is that going to be a problem compared to the Standard, or are they more or less the same?

I understand it's gonna be slightly harder to intonate a vintage bridge, but I don't intonate my guitar every damn day.
>>
>>63693693
>The special has a vintage bridge. Is that going to be a problem compared to the Standard, or are they more or less the same?
Lots of people praise the vintage bridge because of 'muh tones', claiming the brass saddles sound better. Personally I've never been able to hear it.

The huge difference it makes is that intonation on a vintage 3-saddle bridge is a pain in the ass. You essentially have to make peace with the fact that you won't have perfect/great intonation on all strings. Something will be off, even if just by a couple cents. There are third-party upgrades for a vintage 3-saddle tele bridge that allows individual intonation, but they're usually expensive.

On a modern bridge you won't look as cool but the bright side is that you'll be able to have perfect intonation, at least at the 12th fret (since no guitar without true temperament frets can have perfect intonation in all frets).
>>
>>63693541
Lowering the volume knob will decrease the signal unevenly. You will wind up with less treble. To combat this you can use a 1 meg potentiometer, or if you have a master volume, wire a resistor and cap in parallel with connected to the ground and 1st lug of the pot.

As far as getting cleaner sound out of your amp, lowering the gain is fine, but I guess if your amp distorts at very low levels it could be difficult.
>>
>>63693776

I'm used to intonation being a pain in the ass. At least you don't have to detune the string, unlock the saddle and EYEBALL the fucking thing. I'm talking about a Floyd.

I think you sound really good. Definitely ready for an open mic. I think you'll sound better than most of the other people at the open mics honestly, so don't feel intimidated or anything. You have a really cool, soulful voice.
>>
>>63693815
The difference here is that without individual saddles you can't get the intonation to get perfect no matter how much you try or if you take it to a luthier. You can get close, sure. But playing past the 12th on certain strings is likely to sound just plain bad.

So, I live in an apartment and was planning on getting an acoustic guitar, namely the Yamaha FG700S. However, about 90% of songs I listen to and would want to play are played on electric.
Such as:
Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot
Lowlife - Eternity Road
Cocteau Twins - Cherry-Coloured Funk
Slowdive - Alison
Smashing - Pumpkins - Zero
DIIV - Under the Sun
Even with this, I'm still leaning towards the acoustic. Should I really consider getting a electric instead? The guitar and amp would need to cost the same as the FG700S, but the amp would have to be quiet enough for an apartment. I don't even know what electric guitar would be best for songs like I listed above.
>>
>>63694060

Hmm looking at the special's bridge, I can see how that's going to be a problem.. But it has 3 saddles so, basically I can't get every single string to intonate properly, or get 3 perfectly intonated and 3 not nicely intonated.

Also, there isn't any groove on the saddle to keep the strings from sliding side to side? Is the tension of the string enough to keep it in place.
>>
>>63694270
string tension won't keep it exactly in place, but it will return to center. Basically, without getting into too much detail, it's fine. Still, just don't get an inferior bridge design if you're spending more than, say, $50 on a guitar.
>>
>>63694270
Usually the only problem are the G and D strings.
They're not that huge of a problem though like the other anon is making it sound.
Hell, you can pretty much just take some pliers and bend the saddle to get it perfect.
I think you should focus more on other details first.

thanks for the reply, I guess I could get a light overdrive/booster pedal and drop the gain on the amp more, I wouldn't have to roll the volume back much and I could just open the tone nobs up a bit for more treble. 1 meg volume pots sound a bit harsh from what I've found on the interwebs.
>>
>>63694421
Just fyi, tone circuits can only reduce treble, they can't increase it.
>>
>>63694379
>inferior

Yeah I guess, but I know the stoptail PRS suffers from the same thing too.

>>63694390

The special also lacks biflex truss rod and micro tilt which I don't know whether I should care about or not. The fact that it had jumbo frets is a big plus.
>>
>>63694421
there's no real point to lowering gain and using a booster, that's basically net zero. I'm pretty lost on what you want now. Do you have an amp with only one gain/volume knob?

How well would an oak solid body guitar work? I want to make one with a whiskey barrel aesthetic. Would the large open grains be a problem and would the iron straps affect the pickups?
>>
>>63694198
Get an electric, you can be quiet with an amp. That's why they invented volume knobs.
>>
>>63694553
Meh, depends on the player.
Those definitely aren't features that I would miss, and you only need to do maintenance on your guitar so often so it only comes up so often and has work arounds.
>>
>>63694582
I would advise you to avoid it. Your tone will probably seep through the open grains. Also the iron straps might magnetize the pickups and steal the tone from them.
>>
>>63694606

You are right I guess. Guess I might get a special and get a cheap hard case. Not that I even need one..
>>
>>63694645
What are the other options.

Definitely try them all out first.
>>
I have Teisco. It's shit but I haven't seen pictures online of any like it, so I'm gonna be upgrading it. Just a Jazzmaster pickup in the bridge position.
The frets definitely need to be fixed, bue even when I'm not fretting anything it sounds constantly palm muted? I think there's something wrong with the bridge.
>>
>>63694582
Oak and iron are both very heavy. Oak does not have a very unique appearance, so I would recommend staining a lighter wood instead. As for the iron, you're better off using a lighter and thinner metal that's easier to work with. You can weather it to give it an iron appearance.
>>
>>63694678

A PRS S2, Japanese Ibanez, Gibson Faded SG. Or a custom Carvin.

I could go with a PRS S2 too, but I heard bad things about its electronics, but that can be solved easily. I already have a Japanese Ibanez, plays pretty good but I'm looking for single coils this time round.

Gibson .. Neck is too thick for me coming from someone who plays 19mm thick necks.

And the problem with Carvin is exchange rate, combined with shipping and GST plus the fact I can't test it out before I buy it, seems like a gamble.
>>
>>63694727
How heavy are we talking? I like a little heft. I'd like to stick with steel so I don't have to try and cheat a rusty patina onto aluminum or something but I'd definitely use something thinner than actual barrel straps. Will that much steel near the pups mess anything up, though?
>>
>>63694764
I don't know about the others, but definitely avoid the faded SG. Feels cheap and looks tacky imo and you could get a much better guitar at that price.
>>
>>63694645

it's gonna be too heavy, not "a little heft," too heavy. Besides, like I said oak is not a particularly unique looking wood. If you really want to have oak, put an oak cap on a basswood or alder body.

The metal will not detrimentally affect the sound of the pickups.

I want to use oak specifically because the guitar you posted doesn't look quite as good as I think it could. I've done enough diy projects to know that you can't always replicate the material you want because every time I tried I wished I had used the real thing. Ideally I'd use actual old whisky barrels honestly.

But hey, he can do whatever the hell he wants, it has literally no affect whatsoever in my life once I completely forget about this conversation one hour or two from now.

He's the one who'll have to deal with the fact that he was warned and still decided to shrug it off as some rebellious teenager act to 'pursue your real passion and don't care about bills'. He won't have anyone to blame but himself.

ok Anon that 3 way switch is your pickup selector the rhythm setting will sound a lot nicer and fuller for chords and what not playing sing strings will sound like you are listening through a muted medium. The treble selection would be what you would want for more lead melody parts as it gives the guitar very clean cut sounds on the individual strings

It's most likely the retainer wire and/or the saddles rattling. Had the same issue with my Epi.

Get some clear nail polish and apply on the retainer wire (so it sticks to the bridge and the screw ends) and at the saddles themselves (not at the top where the string sits but underneath where the saddles meet the screw and at the sides). You can put a good amount. The nail polish will make everything stop rattling while still being fragile enough that it won't damage your bridge. Simply turning the intonation screw will free it from the nail polish and if you ever want to remove it completely, running it on a acetone bath for a couple minutes will do the job.

It's the most common, recommended and popular fix for ABR bridges rattling.
