reposting cause I was late in the last thread

I'm looking for this particular flute loop or soundfont, I don't know.

youtube.com/watch?v=EBhFHJMVfiI (2:50)
youtube.com/watch?v=FlF3rM_qAoU (1:15)
youtube.com/watch?v=gPebVnhR_D0

I want to know where does it come from because it's used in many songs I know and I'd like to use it.

Any idea what's the source of it?
>>
When people say they make their own synths do they just alter the sets in the vst by changing a presets waveform, decay, attack, etc or do they start off from scratch? also is using presets bad or embarrassing if you want to make a cd
>>
>>63682967
From scratch for me at least.
Oreaets are fine imo, as long as you know how to mix it so it sounds good in the mix.
I use presets sometimes but I always alter them a bit.

3 hours of your life that will make the whole difference. Learn sound design and even if you get presets and edit them they will sound exactly like what you need to express your ideas.

Have fun.

Anyone recommend a good pair of headphones for mixing and mastering (but could also be good for general listening)? Especially for someone who's cheap and had a $140 gift card to Guitar Center. I'm considering the Beyerdynamic DT 880s, but I'm not sure if the 250 Ohm impedance would require more equipment.

well it took me about a million data wheel clicks, but i finally sorted all the drum kits on my xr20 to send all the kicks/toms through one out and all the hats/snares/percussion through the other.

gear is fun

Is 19 and 1/2 too old to make music?I mean ive done stuff before and i listen to alot and different music so im not someone who has no idea what he is doing but still. Also i dont want to make beats but really experimental and or ambient music but im not sure if its too late to get good at it.

Well there are two interpretations to the question. The first is "is [any age] too old to make music?". Of course not, you can make music whenever you want or feel the need to. Regardless of the shit we sling here, music is just an expression of creativity, there's no age limit on that.

The other is "is [any age] too old to make it in the music industry?" It's debatable, but I'd still say there's an answer to it. But 19 1/2 is definitely not the answer to that question.

LFOTool is fucking awesome. It can add a lot of cool rhythms, and polyrhythms.

I have to make a big effort to not abuse it too much. Like "swiping" a sound from right to left too hard / too often, or going overboard with hand drawn pumping.

I really wanna design patches with both hands instead of the mouse, but I work in the box and I have no idea how to use MIDI knobs and faders effectively.

Always linking, say, cutoff freq on the first knob, resonance on the second etc. would cripple any plugins with unique capabilities. But designing presets for each plugin wouldn't work either because I wouldn't memorize them anyway.
The only option seems to be the hardware route, but since this is the only value I see in it, the cost seems too big.

Behringer has a pair of neat controllers, the BCR/BCF 2000 that you can assign knobs with. The cool part is that you can save presets on the device itself, so you can have a preset for one synth, and another preset for another synth, et cetera.

Of course, I use a BCF 2000 with a program that automatically assigns parameters, so I don't have an issue with that anyways.

Don't get in a habit of treating soundcloud success as real success.

Always cut before boosting

Don't act like that guy who says "we should totally work on stuff sometime" will ever actually try sometime to make stuff, everything is on you.

Always work on something, it doesn't matter if you never release it or come back to it, it's all just routine work that needs to be done in order to get more gooder.

Diversify your portfolio, try to work on other projects with people outside of your discipline, maybe record a rapper, or do an art installation. Get out of your comfort zone.

You can always learn something new, and you can always teach somebody something new. Both are quite rewarding.

Gear or DAW doesn't make a composer, the music does.

Don't concern yourself with DAW wars, analog vs digital or hardware vs software. That debate is many years old, and detracts from real production discussion. People will still use what they want.

Maybe learn piano, maybe take lessons too.

Everyone gets stuck in a creative rut. Sometimes I might not make something new for several months, sometimes I'm quite prolific, many artists are that way. When you do get stuck, don't wallow in depression, maybe get a new hobby or try another art form.

>I'm only 17
You lucky rat bastard, you've got so much time, use it.

Post script; Why do my audio clips sometimes randomly cut out in ableton? You can hear the gong cuts out at 1:33 and there's a buzzing sound.

It's just an introduction bruh, drop a 4/4 kick at around 1:30 and keep going. Play with that, maybe a breakbeat would work better, but you need a kick.

As for the vocals, they kinda remind me of Have a Nice Life. They're not offensive but maybe you could try double tracking them with a vocal in a higher register.
>>
>>63697364
Did some quick edits, here's the new version.

A lot louder, eq'd some things, compression on the master.

Any thoughts on it are welcome, good, bad, or Chad.

I was imagining it as an intro, but I can't figure out if that means intro to a song or an intro to the album. I had fucked with a kit dropping in when you said, but I deleted it in a moment of self doubt. I'll spend a couple hours and see if anything happens.

As far as the vocals, I have 4 tracks at 3 different harmonies. I apparently have some work to do. I'm going for panda bear with less reverb/delay. But I will take the HaNL comparison as a compliment. Thanks for the comments.

Slightly updated version ^ if you're curious.

>>
I'm piecing together a rig this weekend (small rackmount) and have a few questions. I've read a lot and am now looking for some direct answers to my concerns.

I'm looking to do small band and personal recordings, but don't want to waste time with starter gear.

1. I'm about to buy my first interface. Is this a good deal?

http://m.kijiji.ca/pro-audio-recording/city-of-halifax/motu-8pre-usb-recording-interface-adat-expansion/v?adId=1151746824&ck=CK&from=Search&ts=1459416604386

That's Canadian rupels, but I've read mostly good reviews about this thing and it has clean mic preamps for a basic/accurate sound. No DAW, but I figured I'd just steal something anyways.

2. What's a good reasonably priced mic preamp rack mount? Tube preferably but will also entertain SS too (or possibly one of each).

3. Anything else I should consider for a budget-minded rack?

>>63703623
Depends on whether you want it to sound like Kraftwerk or Daftpunk.
>>
So I was at GC today, looking prices. Had the counter guy weigh in on good starting equipment. His recommendations:

Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (Simple but solid) $150
Mic: AT2020 (good all around workhorse mic) $100
Mic Stand: $40
Mic Shield: $100

So, about a $400 dollar investment to get started on vocals. Any glaring missteps?

Does anyone here know if Tim Hecker uses a Mellotron for the Flutes in his songs on Virgins and Love Streams? I'm not really sure, and i'm only asking that because one of his alternate versions of a song on Virgins is called Amps, Drugs, Mellotron

gotta master it and make the synth sound sharper. at around 36 have some counter point and intrduce a high pitch synth that holds thill 1.09 at which point you add an actualy melody while ret conning everuthing else

I really want to produce/make music by myself and have some instruments bought off of friends and jam around with them a lot.
The way I try to make a song is to record stuff straight into my cracked copy of Fruity Loops with a small mixing console and just arrange it the way I want it. Is this the right way to do it or are there any tips of you guys?

This video series changed everything for me, now i can actually "build my own" synths in software plugins or what-have-you now. Not even using presets; when you learn more or less which wave forms sound like what you can go from there and endlessly combine/subtract them with each other. anyone who uses a synth ever should know whats in this video.

It's too heavily compressed i think; you need to find a better balance.

subtractive eq your bass more and dont detune it so much it feels too wobbly and not in the good way. The motif itself also gets a bit stale so maybe vary it some (dynamics-wise melody-wise whateverthefuck-wise, change it about).

Other than that I enjoyed the textures and fx work. keep on keepin on.

Trying to get into hardware for some fun, inspiration on the side. Working in front of a PC all the time is starting to feel cold and joyless, while I still love the process of making music.

Again. Just getting into it for a change of pace, not wishing to shell out hear for top of the line shit. Any suggestions for versatile, yet affordable gear that can cover a lot of ground? I've never dabbled in hardware at all, so I feel excited about the new workflows it will inspire
>>
>>63715025

What kind of music are you making? That would probably dictate the synth side of what would work for you, but to begin with you'll also need some sort of sequencing base to allow you to step away from the computer.

An MPC something would be a good start since you have sampling and sequencing there, synth-wise it would depend on whether you need multi-timbrality if you do music with lots of layers, or a mono-timbral (but perhaps polyphonic) synth if you rely on grooves and samples mostly.
>>

I don't want to be pretentious with my idea of making music in me super unique genres, so I'll keep it pretty catch-all. Basically I make ambient music, IDM, and acid techno.

I use samples but mostly for trippy ambience, effects, and textures, not really on drums and I'm not an MPC- head or a guy that likes to chop up breaks all day. Generally I synthesize my own drum sounds out of I guess a sense (almost certainly stupid) of purity and perfectionism.
>>
Amateur producer here. Question: how big of a difference is there between vocals recorded in an untreated room vs. a soundproofed studio? I'm speaking strictly in terms of being able to have it "sit in" better with an instrumental, and not sound out of place

I have no means to soundproof my room and no studio is nearby, so what I've done is record vocals in the room on a $100 condenser mic with the windows closed (obviously still having room ambience/noise in the background of the vocals), then use a program to select the 'silence' where only the room ambience can be heard.....then use that to strip the selected room noise away from the vocals so they sound "cleaner". The thing is, even after doing this, adding EQ, compression and reverb to further try to hide the room noise, and even when trying to reduce the volume of the vocals on top of the instrumental....the vocals while sounding cleaner, also still sound "separate" from the instrumental.

Is not recording in a soundproofed room the simple cause of this nagging problem, or could it be something else? Would switching mics make a difference? I would post an example of one of my tracks but I'm not home right now....
>>
>>63718214
I'll give you a little tip I sometimes use for if something just doesn't sit right.

Get a parametric EQ, and out it to the narrowest band possible. Then amp it up and sweep the spectrum - at one point it will sound way WORSE and more horrible. What you want to do once you've found this, is back the amplitude way DOWN from that horrible point. Works more often than you would think.

I think it might be something like finding the resonance frequency of whatever is giving you hiss or interference. Either way, worth a try.
>>
>>63718214

Acoustic treatment will potentially improve the quality of the recording but it won't affect so much the ability of the vocal track to blend with a mix, that tends to have more to do with the character of the instrumental sounds - the harmonic content of them and the loudness of them.

Let's say you have an instrumental mix that sounds fine on its own - all frequency ranges are covered and there are no over-quiet passages where you feel that something is missing - adding vocals to such a track will sound like they've been tacked on as an afterthought.

Think of it the way a band would when writing - they'd leave spaces that are less rhythmically complex and maybe less instrumentally dense too so that the vocals can sit in a pocket and not have to be turned up too loud just to be heard.
>>
I just got my first midi keyboard today (pic related) and the only I have is the velocity. Every time I play on the midi keyboard the notes sound vey low unless i press it really hard. How do i fix it? I use ableton btw
>>
>>63718590
Google how to turn off sensitivity so it's just a boolean switch.
>>
>>63718590
if you still want velocity on, then you just record your shit and turn all the notes up in the piano roll. If you select all the notes on the roll, if you turn the veloicty of one of the notes up, they will all go up that much.

There may be a better solution out there, but if you can't change the input, there's your workaround.
