There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

Hey prod,
So I've been using Logic pro 9 for about a year now and I'm starting to hate it. It can't use VST's at all. So I'm really restrained. It's also just an old DAW. What should I go for? I'm interested in ableton, but FL is always tempting since there's such a large amount of people who use it.

What daw is good for sequencing and recording analog gear? I've been using Logic with soft synths for years but when sequencing external MIDI it's incredibly glitchy, with sequences sometimes completely failing to sequence, audio plugins not working, and frequent stuck notes. It seems like it might be the synthesizers fault but I've experienced several glitches trying to use an MPC as well, with the MIDI going completely apeshit at random.

For people with analog gear, what are you using? Do you use hardware sequencers? There must be a daw with hardware users in mind.

I just got my first analog synth yesterday. I made a patch that sounded almost identical to a classic Boards of Canada song's sound, but I lost it and couldn't figure out what I did shortly after.

It was a bandpass in the mid-ish region with a very particular envelope, resonance, and waveform mixture.

So I made a really shitty song for a school project about a week ago, some basic ass trap influenced beets with some economics based lyrics with I-Can't-Believe-It's-Not-AutoTune on cheesy ass mumbling that I recorded over a fucking laptop mic.

Apparently I did something right because no one can stop telling me that it's good.

So recently discovered someone I used to work on hip-hop with back in highschool is finally catching a break and got picked up by Fetty Waps producers. I know, I know, you all hate Fetty Wap. But it's something.

He recently asked me if I would want to get in on producing some beats for his album. I've never been in the beat selling market before, but I told him first and foremost we need to talk money, as well as contracts and copyrights so my shit doesn't get stolen.

Anyone have any advice on the legal side of all of this? I've got some pretty decent beat ideas fleshed out right now, and we're going to be sitting down to make an exclusively tailored beat for him that we can show his manager and production crew to let them know what I can do.

So, general legal advice, as well as tips and tricks for how to make the most out of my beat sales?

I originally told him I'd sell him a simple 16 bar loop for about 60 bucks and a fully custom beat for around 180-200. I know I could probably get more, which is why I told him I want to sit down with him and make a beat specifically for him so that when I show them, we can negotiate some sort of offer. Trust me, I will not be giving any files or stems to these dudes, let alone letting them hear the entire beat, just snippets. I'm not getting my shit stolen a'la Hudson Mohawke. Kanye and Drake apparently fucked him over.
>>
>>63411522
Also, if I am going to be making these beats, would you think the producers are going to be the ones that would EQ and master them so I should just focus on making raw sounds and not mess with any effects or EQ?
>>
>>63411522
Look up Djpain 1 on youtube he has a few videos about that as well on his facebook. Hes a multi platinum producer who actually talks to his fans.

>>
>>63398570
>>63411435
I'd like to add a little to that comment, if you don't mind.

Duplicate the (synth?) track so you have two identical tracks. Pan one hard left, the other hard right. Add a simple delay to either the right or left (not both), and it should sound much more wider and it gives it a sense of direction as well.
>>
>>63402585
Maybe cut the sub by 2-3db unless you like it that extreme. I like the melodies and vocal edits, though the synths are somewhat basic sounding.
>>63406581
Needs some work to keep it interesting.
>>
>>63411542
Hey thanks for the answer man, I will definitely check it out.

I really want to get into making these beats legally so no stolen VSTs or anything, but I do have some OVO drum sounds I really really love using but I'm worried if I try and use them with this company I could cause a lot of problems. Do you think I should look around for similar sounding free ones just to be safe? Or would you think most drum kits out there are pulled from different sample libraries from products like Maschine and Kontakt and whatnot?

I just don't want anything to turn around and bite me in the ass down the road cause I certainly can't afford to be sued for thousands or millions of dollars.

This is a mix of ambient/idm and nu-house I would think.

Not sure what the synth is or which one you're referring to. Are you talking about that sharp gritty gated synth?

So I asked this question last night, and I got some good advice before I got carried away critiquing clyp's, but I have a more specific version of it: how do I start recording outside my school? I'm almost done with my recording degree, and I'm terrified that, come September, I will have no way to record drums or guitar amps. I've thought about buying mics, but where would I record? I can't do it at home; I live with my parents. Even when I do guitar and bass DI, I still get complaints. Furthermore, I don't actually own any guitar amps.

I have slightly over a thousand dollars. I make about $300 every two weeks. What should I buy, what should I do?

I like the UI, automation, piano roll, mixer, it's all pretty good and I have a nice workflow from years of using it. But then again I haven't really tried anything else.

>>63404749
Ah that's neat. I have one teeny tiny analog synth but it has midi in, or else I can use the sq-1 as a midi>cv converter.
I tried silentway once but couldn't get it to work (he also uses that).
>>
>>63412818
Agreed. Tempo changes and non-standard measures are still a PITA though but I don't think any mainstream daw really has that down.
The ability to stretch a selection of notes is really nice though, I think that's a somewhat recent feature.
>>
>>63415588
>silent way
You need a DC coupled audio interface, and not many support that. If you have some cheap Akai or focusrite 2in/2out box, I know it won't.

MOTU interfaces tend to be DC coupled.

DC coupling just means that it can put out DC signals (like CV) and not just AC signals (like audio)
>>
>>63415655
Yea I know. I think it should work with my laptop's audio out, but mostly I just couldn't do shit with the plugin because it was confusing.
>>

>>63415684
>Yea I know.
>I think it should work with my laptop's audio out
Sorry anon, but I don't actually think you know. I can't think of any reason ever why a built-in headphone port would be DC coupled. It's a really esoteric design feature and laptop in/outs are designed to be as cheap as possible. If you're lucky, you might get 1 volt peak to peak effectively giving you one octave of pitch CV.
>>
>>63415746
idk, I can do this with my laptop:
https://clyp.it/axqogray
wheras if I route this through my mixer it will keep returning to some baseline voltage.

> It's a really esoteric design feature and laptop in/outs are designed to be as cheap as possible.
You sure about that? Wiki says
>This technique is used by default in circuits like IC op-amps, since large coupling capacitors cannot be fabricated on-chip. That said, some discrete circuits (such as power amplifiers) also employ direct coupling to cut cost and improve low frequency performance.
>>
>>63396386
A time machine? Most traditional studios are dead. Not trying to sass you but the best way to do it these days is coming from an SRT degree program. If you want to break into sound recording or production just start doing it. Make beats for the corner rap slingers, record rehearsals or recitals for local choral troupes or bands. Doing it is how you do it.
>>63404866

>>
>>63417597
Eh, that's personal preference. I'd tend to agree with you but being that I'm going to be showing these to people working in the mainstream media, they'd probably prefer crisp and clean. For your own interest though, I'll add some XD

I wish I had Mercury Waves bundle again, I fucking loved their Pie Analog Tape Compressor. I added tape saturation to fucking everything.
>>
>>63417613
This. This is exactly why I have always stuck with FL Studio. The piano roll is better than Logic, Garageband, Ableton, Reaper, etc. The reason being they've been able to craft and perfect it over the past 15+ years. It's fantastic.
>>
>>63417632
>I added tape saturation to fucking everything.
same desu
>>
>>63417651
It's just disappointing how the other big DAW's don't take a page from FL's book and implement some of the features like the knife tool or the note slide function, I mean, do they think it's bad to copy functions or something? I'm on Ableton.
>>
I have noticed sometimes in FL Studio when I play my midi-controller into the piano roll, it will add 2 of every note. Would anyone happen to know why? I really hate that I don't catch it some times because it causes mixing problems and also it's just flat out annoying having to go back and delete every little note that's been duplicated...
>>
>>63417742

>>
>>63417613
>>63417651
>>63417734

I like Ableton a lot, but this piano roll shit is annoying the fuck out of me. The rest of the workflow and shit I think is really good and meshes well with me, but I just don't fucking understand why people can't just copy FL's piano roll. I started with Ableton and only tinkered with FL very recently and it's like immediately apparent how good that piano roll is.

Like how do you not have a knife tool, it just seems so obvious in hindsight.
>>
>>63417856
There's got to be something you're missing, I'm sure they're a way to shorten or cut notes in Abelton. Also, they can't copy FL Studio's piano roll because thats Image-Lines IP. It would be illegal to literally just copy their piano roll.

Perhaps you could make your melodies in FL Studio and edit them in it as well and then transport the midi line over to Ableton to be used? I dunno...
>>
>>63417906
>they're a way

holy shit what the fuck am i doing.
>>
Fuuuuuck Morphine has to be the best soft-synth Image-Line has made man. I love this fucking synth. I've used it on like 3 songs exclusively now. Just the presets even, I haven't even tinkered with the modules.
>>
>>63417906
Nah, I'm not missing anything. FL's workflow in the piano roll is just really fast. It allows you to just try stuff really fast. Best comparison I can give you is like, Renoise and drums. You can do most of the stuff Renoise can do (even at high LPB's) in any other DAW, but not with that efficiency.

I'm trying to stick with a single DAW, but I've got Ableton down for the most part so I'll prob pick up FL as a secondary - It's just really good for brainstorming and create progressions and stuff.
>>
>>63417934
Harmor is better senpai but I'm glad you're enjoying something so much and hope you have a good day
>>
Is there any daw where you can use a midi keyboard to enter notes on the piano roll? Something like
>hold some notes
>drag somewhere in the piano roll
>notes you pressed get added at that position/length
I don't think FL does this does it?
>>
>>63417956
Aren't you just the same anon who always shills Harmor?
>>
>>63417742

Download MIDI-OX (it's free) and look at the MIDI messages your controller is outputting each time you press a key - I'm suspecting that it's probably got multiple key zones set up, with either the zones covering the whole keyboard range and set to two different MIDI output channels, or even set to the same MIDI channel., this would cause it to send duplicate notes.
>>

Logic has a step input mode, dunno if other DAWs use it though - you place the timeline cursor where you want the notes to appear, activate step input mode and press your keys and the notes will appear, the timeline cursor then moves to the next value set by your quantize value (or you can move it manually to wherever you want) and you can repeat.

Anyone got any tips for mic reflection filters?

I see a lot of people talking about the SE Electronics Reflexion Filter X. Is it worth the 40 euros more than the cheaper stuff (like the Vicoustic flexi screen)?

I would use it mostly to record a rapper with a pretty high, nasal voice. The room I record in already has pretty decent acoustics, but I want that extra bit to make the recordings perfect.
>>
>>63418937
I always prefer to use the midi controller. The piano roll is only meant for fine tuning for me most of the time, or quantizing. Depends on what genre I am making though. House and electronic and hip-hop I usually will quantize, everything else I will leave loosey goosey to give it that organic feel.

Fucking A, my god damn FL Studio keeps making the channel pitch go down -94 cents RANDOMLY. I thought it might be my sensitive ass scroll wheel, but I turned my mouse off and it's still doing it.

What the FUCK. I guess this is what I get for not spending the 800 dollars on FL Studio.
>>

I feel like paying $300 is too far on the curve of diminishing returns for reflection filters. I'm a bit /diy/ though, so I would think cutting up some spare acoustic foam I have stored up and gluing it to some oak paneling would suffice for my applications. Then again,I'm not recording rappers.

Sadly you might be right there - you'd need to trawl through your controller's manual instead to confirm if it has multiple key zones set up, but you'd have to do that anyway so that you could set up just a single zone.
>>
>>63419786
There's nothing wrong with using presets if they serve the purpose you are using them for.

I sampled a piano melody and made a beat with it, uploaded it to youtube and already had 6 people ask me if they can put it on their mixtape

I obviously can't sell the beat because I'm a bedroom producer and don't think i'd get the sample cleared.

dunno, do any of you people sell beats on the internet to random people?

>>63422157
Yes, do that then sell it, it's a lucrative business.
>>
>>63422215
Not him, but do people generallly buy/sell like 8-bar loops (that's what I think of when you say beat) or full instrumentals tracks?
>>
>>63422270
Full instrumental tracks, at least in hip-hop business is 8-bar loops with minimal variation, so it'll take you another 10 minutes to turn an 8 bar loop into a 3 minute beat.

Hello all -
fairly new to music prod -

What VSTs are must haves for synthesizing your own bass, & altering sample pitch?
>>
>>63422529
Some cool sounds but it doesn't flow well at all, rhythmically.
>>63422368
No chorus/verse things at all? Just intro/loops/outro?

Well I don't think I'd make good beats anyway. I was in a mental institution once and this guy wanted to make a rap with me and he said it sucked.

Just went out and bought a Blue Snowball mic.

Holy fucking shit. Recording live music and mixing it is ten times harder than recording electronic music. Any tips guys? I've been EQing this for the last hour and a half and it still sounds hollow as fuck.

Is it more likely the actual set up in my room? Am I losing a lot of tonality and frequency because I don't have any sound proofing in here?

What do I need to do, whats off in this mix? I feel like the acoustic guitar is too bassy, and the vocals sound far too hollow....Bah. By the way, I am the same guy that was posting the rap beats earlier. Also, why the FUCK is it buzzing like that? None of my tracks are clipping? Is it the microphone? I have it on the second setting.

Clearly I have a lot to learn about acoustics and recording live instrumentation.

Re-recorded the vocals on setting one, which is a cardioid setting which is better for vocals apparently. I was recording vocals previously at a -10db setting and it wasn't sounding right. Also I had no sound proofing. Re-recorded this in the most ghetto way possible...wrapped a blanket over my head and my monitor with my Snowball sitting below and between myself and my monitor....

Hey, it worked.

I still have a lot to learn about live recording...

How about you fuck off? Multiple people were asking for links so go fuck yourself faggot. I hate kids like you who come into these threads and shit on people for sharing their music and getting feedback on production. Eat a dick queer.
