There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

How do these electro-harmonix pedals work? They don't use samples, the guitar tone is either being shaped by some kind of intelligent convolution, or replaced by synthesis and pitch tracking. Both of these methods seem unlikely to me to produce such good results, so how do they do it?

And is there a VST that does something similar? I'm really into morphing sounds at the moment, I want to see what would happen if you put some vocals through one of these.
>>
>>63356233
it might be frequency to CV conversion, which then controls a digital synth
my ms-20 mini does frequency > CV and you can play it with a guitar doing that
>>
I'm going to be away from my desktop for a few months, and wanted to keep producing on the go.

I know I won't be able to run Diva, but will most standard VSTs be good with 4 GBs RAM/i3 processor? I'm not strapped for cash, but I'm not at Macbook levels of indulgence either. Hopefully below or around $400.

I have good sounding tracks but I seem to be missing that "glue" that just sticks them together? How do I get this effect? is it mixing?
>>
>>63357413
>glue
>what is a glue compressor
>>
https://clyp.it/0fmyfylq
you'll notice this uneasy feeling every after the listen and that's pretty much what I feel now.
>>
>>63357413
It could be a mix (kek) of different things.

Are instruments in key? Are any stepping on each other in terms of volume, frequency, or both? Are there too many layers playing at once? Are there good transitions?

If you don't know how to determine these things, learn how to and download the appropriate plugins.

Once you feel comfortable with all of those things, then you can try applying something like a glue compressor to one or more busses to see if that improves things more. (It won't always, but it can.)
>>
>>63357413
Even if you have individual reverb effects on the tracks, use a global room reverb send, return center panned and put ALL of the tracks through even just a little. If you can hear it you're using too much.
>>
>>63357880
there's literally no point for him to use it if he can't hear it's literally just using up cpu
just put things that need reverb through the same reverb
>>
>>63356233

Not sure if this question belongs here but what is a good place to buy midi keyboards that has reasonable prices? I was tempted to buy it used off ebay.

I'm still deciding if I should even get it yet or just keep saving up.
>>
>>63358640
You can get a cheap one used and it will be fine. You don't really need to save up, you can probably get one for $50 or less. Unless you want one with weighted keys or some other fancy stuff.
>>
Are their any decent DAWs for guitar with pedal effects and shit?

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>63358692
I guess it's because I'm looking for one with 49 keys or more. I wanted to try to learn as much piano as I can with it in addition to all the music production stuff.
>>
>>63358745

There's a ton of cheap 49 key controllers, for example

http://www.ebay.com/itm/M-Audio-Keystation-49e-usb-midi-keyboard-controller-/222055167440
>>
>>63358812
Do you think it would be worth it to save up for a 61 key keyboard or just get this thing? On one hand I want something I can stick with for a while. But on the other hand I want to just start making music and learning.
>>
>>63358906
I have that exact controller and it's not bad. I frequently play jazz off of sheet music and there's only been a few times that I couldn't play all the notes. For the most part, most songs will be contained within those 49 keys. Personally I'd say get a cheap one and get started ASAP but it's up to you.
>>
Maybe a dumb question...

For drum machine VSTs that only allow 12-16 patterns, what's the best way to continue developing the drums in the track? Should I lay down a totally new track each time I run out, with a new instance of the VST on each?

I feel like that would waste a lot of space with tracks that don't have much sound on them.

Is there a better solution?
>>
>>63359064
Solid advice. Thanks man. I might just get this one soon.

>>63359162
The percussion isn't mixed super well. By that I mean, you have things hitting at the same time which maybe don't have much space. Compositionally, the song could use a breather at some point, too: tension + release keeps the song moving. The spacey part at the end is a bit interesting though! Keep at it!

I'm going to graduate college in August or December with a recording degree, and I have no idea where to even begin getting gigs. Everyone seems to want me to do shit for free or not at all, and even when I offer to volunteer I get turned away. None of my classmates seem to be doing anything, and I don't have that many contacts. I'm considering just giving up and becoming a shift manager at my local pizza place (they really want to promote me from driver) and throwing my dreams away, but all I really want to do is record and mix and have a good time.

That's what I've been doing, but I find it impossible to get a steady stream of work. Also, once I graduate college, I won't have access to any of the school's recording gear, including their drums and mics.

I live with my parents; my job barely pays enough to pay my parents' rent, let alone a place I would be able to record drums. Even if I go for the shift manager position, it's only a few bucks per hour more.

And my setup at home is so shit. My computer was outdated when I bought it four years ago; I can't run ProTools on it, only this obscure (but still nice) DAW called Mixcraft.

As far as I'm aware, I have a good reputation at the college. I've gotten A's in all my recording projects, and my mixes were routinely voted the favorite when we mixed the same song for projects. I know I'm introverted and depressed, but I'm not like a white supremacist or Bernie liberal or outspokenly political (at least not in public), and I'm not out to tell people their work is shit.

I'm just so tired, and this shit isn't helping

you went full fucking retard you stupid bitch. get off your high horse anyway.

here's some critique for this one: >>63361085

improve your beaming to really emphasize the beat, the lone 8th notes are good but you really gotta make it super explicit (i.e. beam the rests). almost no slurring so i'm guessing you don't know how to properly write for piano and emphasize phrasing (unless this was the intended effect which i doubt). add more space in between the staves, shit is messy as fuck. what's going on with the fermata on the second measure? what are you implying here it's a little inexact.

Really though beaming if your biggest flaw here work on that because it's unnecessarily messy and sparse.

Throw a LP filter on that bass synth.
Fucking cool speech samples, where are they from?
>>
>>63363481
Aw shucks
The 1973(?) Jack Nicholson movie Chinatown, hence the track name. I find basically any movie from that time period just gives awesome samples, with a telephone EQ filter over it and a spot of reverb for certain sections.

Cheers for the advice with the bass as well, I'll have a crack at that when I get home.
>>
>>63363116
Sure. What do you do?
>>63363425
I think that wobble bass, the higher harmonics, might be masking some of the higher instruments. EQ might help a little, but consider using ducking on the bassline.
>>63362311
Consider octave duplication, boosting somewhere in the low mids using EQ, a very wet reverb, a synth sound with a slow attack and long decay (or plugins to slow the attack/lengthen the decay), or a combination of the above. Doubling synths can help if you double them differently, e.g. like the way engineers blend guitar cabs playing the same thing to make the sound fuller.
>>63361846
I'll get to this in a few minutes.
>>63361154
Condenser mic > Light distortion > transparent compressor > rather wet reverb w/ medium long decay time > quarter-note delay
>>63361108
Black metal, shoegaze, noise, lo-fi, drone, neofolk, anything that has distortion down to a science. I'd love to hear more rappers use distortion in their tracks not even in a metal way
>>63359162
Not really my specialty but I think there's a little too much mids overall. The mix is otherwise balanced, so I think you can fix it in mastering.
>>63357413
Compression. Look into "ducking compression," especially for locking together kick drum and bass, or guitar and vocals. Also, the way you process your master bus even before you send it out to a mastering house, if you do any processing, dramatically affects the cohesiveness of your mix.
>>
>>63361846
Around 1:41, ride's a little too loud. Also, I think you emphasized the wrong freq's for it; it sounds kinda boxy.

That transition at 3:52, waaaay too sudden (unless that's what you're going for?). Maybe try taking that high synth and have it play the chord on top of that bassline, let it ring out for a couple bars and then segue into 3:54.

Love the way you use that sample at 4:20.

At 7:04, I would consider keeping the drums and the rest of the instrumentation busy while you execute your key change, then drop out. However, if you change the other transition, you might be able to keep this as it is, like as a coda.

Strings are a little loud at 8:21. Consider volume automation, so it increases in volume until the track ends, because when it's on its own it sounds right.

But honestly this is excellent so far. Mix is great, your drums sound good for the genre, and the repetition there was in the melodies wasn't too much.
>>

I'm not hot shit so don't expect the best thing in the world. I'm trying to get my shit together.

Also, I'm willing to rap over some distortion. I'm getting more of an industrial vibe though after binge listening to Death Grips thanks to this faggot ass board.

First of all, nice double dubs.

Mix is solid for the genre. That string pad, I'd add a bit more hi-mids to that with EQ. Very clear mix, no problem hearing anything.

Pad in this song is waay too present. You gotta be careful with arpeggios (1:05 is the best example of an arpeggio, the thing you played in the pads); watch the levels or else it becomes Koyaanisqatsi, which is probably a little too hypnotic for the vibe I think you're going for. Also, I feel like this mix overall isn't as bassy as the other one. This isn't always a problem (e.g. you wouldn't do a jazz tune as bassy as a dubstep track), but if you plan on releasing these together I'd recommend making sure the final masters are consistent.

Are these mixes going to remain instrumental, or do you plan on having someone rap over these? Either way, you should probably add some more layers. Good stuff though.
>>
>>63364824
thanks a lot for the feedback. And I understand what you mean about that arp being too all over the place. I was trying to get it to stop clashing with the other sounds but I guess I'm going to have to make some different edits.

I was going to release an amateur beattape, so they're going to stay instrumentals unless someone wants to rap on them, and I'll go back and try and make my final levels consistent like you said, I didn't really think about that.

So when you play your bass, you need to make sure your other strings aren't ringing out, unless you're going for that overly boomy sound (and I have in the past, but it's not the norm). I would recommend running your bass through an amp sim of some kind; DI bass is clear and honestly your best option for a good bass sound, but it's usually not very spectacular on its own. If you don't know where to find an amp sim, I can hook you up with some good sounding free ones. Also, hi-pass that bass. Hi-pass every instrument and the final mix. For the bass, try somewhere around 50Hz. Compress the everloving shit out of it once you're done. It's kinda hot in the mix too; turn it down.

Your kick sound is okay; it could be louder. Consider using a ducking compressor; simpler would be to EQ out some of your bass for the kick drum. Maybe try cutting some 200Hz from the bass, and hi-pass the kick around 80Hz. These aren't set in stone, but they're good places to start.

Snare sound is unremarkable, but considering your genre it probably does service your sound. Maybe a little compression will help it out, fast attack, medium ratio, fast attack, and boost around 200Hz.

Your hi-hats are too quiet.

The organ is too quiet. Otherwise, it sounds good.

Your vocals are well recorded. They could use a de-essing. That's not really your fault, though. Look up how to use a de-esser. Antress has a good one for free. If that's too complicated, use either a multiband compressor with a very narrow bandwidth somewhere between 3-9kHz, or a very thin cut with an EQ from the same range.

I like the composition. Very goth, eerie. Did you intend to have all those dissonances? I come from a metal background so dissonance is cool with me, but I've met a lot of newbies who unintentionally write dissonance into their music.
>>
>>63365375
The boomy sound is from letting an open string ring on purpose, though i'll take a look at my technique and see i'm im screwing up the other muting.

I agree with the kick, i was gonna give the drums a lookover in the chorus either way. I ahve one question about effects on the drums. I use a vst for the drums, so it's all on the piano roll. Is there a way to connect effects to a single coordinate on the roll? in cubase.

Dissonances were indeed intended, you described what i was going for :)
I've been playing for a goodly while, but production of entire tracks and mixing stuff is all a huge bunch of things to learn at once.
Thanks for the advice i'll get to work later this afternoon.

>Is there a way to connect effects to a single coordinate on the roll? in cubase.
I'm not a Cubase guy. I know what the piano roll is, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "connect effects to a single coordinate."
>>
>>63365708
On the piano roll, with a drum vst every key(? on the piano, english is not my first language) is bound to a specific sample. SO to put an effect on my kick, i'd need to apply it only on that key. i think. I havent googled it yet.
>>
>>63365733
Your best bet is to make a separate track just for the kick and apply effects there. I'll often do that for things like handclaps, if I want a ton of reverb on them.
>>
>>63365368

I was going to say something like that, or if you could bus the kick to a send, effect the send. I'm a little surprised here because in every other DAW I've ever used (ProTools, Mixcraft, Logic), the drum VSTi's come mapped by default.

When I go into Mixcraft (pic related), I can just drop MT Power Drumkit onto a MIDI track and it's instantly ready to go. All the drums are in the right spots. If I need to move something around, I can use the "range" control to delete drums if I need to (e.g., let's say I want a different kick drum sound) and add in sounds with a sampler or range-constricted instrument.

I'm telling you this because Cubase probably has some way for you to insert VSTi's across the entire track, as well as a way to have an instrument track with multiple outputs.

Exactly how this is done in Cubase, I'm not sure.
>>
>>63366175
aaaah okay. Cubase just maps all the drums to specific keys in the pianoroll of a midi track.
though what Mixcraft does might be possible. I'm not really very proficient in Cubase yet.

millions of performers use sheet music every day around the world though. Saying its a meme is correct. its a huge non-genetic idea passed down from person to person.

Its also an excellent way to learn more about composing. You can look at the scores of great composers and learn what makes them tick.

Any producer worth their salt should at least be able to arrange some string quartet parts for real players. Are you just going to use sample libraries your whole life?

up the tempo a bit
>>
>>63365160
Also, a couple more things:

1) Why are your crescendos and diminuendos so stupidly small? You need to clarify if you want the sound to increase in that small amount of time (and if that's the case I'd argue a sfz is more adequate in some of these) or if you want the increase to be smaller. It's not clear on that page at all. Some are so small even, that they might as well not be there. Your tempo is slow enough but it'd be nice to know why.

2) The three-quarter tone sharp sign - are you using it properly? I mean the music seems to be atonal (which by the way, you don't have to indicate above the staff, that's a redundancy and a player will not give a shit about it being atonal or not in a given set of measures) or at least sticking to some principle such as quarter tone rules with the 24 equal steps, but I suppose this is not something that can be easily inferred from just this excerpt.

3) Some of the text above the staff is confusing and will only lead to problems in rehearsal. Becoming fractured? I mean what the fuck does that mean? Is it basically ritardando? Is it rubato? You'll be spending a lot of time explaining this to the musicians that could be used to rehearse instead.

4) Tempo - be clearer when you're transitioning from one tempo to another. What stayed the same? I mean the quarter note is somewhat enough, but shit man this is just something that will take forever to explain to performers.

How long ya been making music? I'm guessing you play the guitar?

Honestly it's not bad. Some mixing issues here and there but otherwise it's not bad.
>>
>>63369951
ty anon!
I recorded a friend playing random chords. I used a cheap, old mp3 player which records in mono only. With a distortion :/

which are those mixing issues?
>>
>>63370007
Well the guitar for sure is one of the primary issues. It kinda works but you have a little bit too much low end on it which clashes somewhat with the kick (which is a little too loud/heavy on the bass). It's this clash in between the guitar and the kick that makes the listener unable to decide what to put their attention on.

One of the easy solutions to that would be to compress the guitar a bit to bring it forward more, then test it out like that and see if the kick is still conflicting. It's a close call, however, as you might kill the kick if you lower it too much. Also, try bringing out the higher frequencies on the guitar more (I'm talking 8-12khz here)

This however is just my opinion, test the changes out and if you don't like em forget I ever said anything.
>>
>>63370061
amazing man, thanks a lot!!
I indeed reduced the lows on the guitar (where is most of the distortion)...

The kick is also loud cause lows weren't "loud" enough (for my ears) at 0db, so I rised volume to like +3db, and added a limiter on the main...

I'll do everything u suggested and see how it sounds, ty!
>>
>>63357413
first off who is this fine young woman

Yes and no.

You'll probably learn it whether you want to or not on your own, the more you play.

You just won't be "classically" trained, but who gives a fuck. As someone who is "classically" trained in the piano; that shit takes way too long, and is an archaic method of learning. You're better off just getting the basics of music theory down, and going off on your own.

I feel like i'm nowhere near close to having made anything worth putting out and I feel like I'll never get there. It doesn't bother me though since I make beats just for the fun of it when I have nothing else to do.

I *would* like to release a project one day though just to say that I did it. A decent mixtape on bandcamp that nobody will ever listen to is fine as well just so I can point at it and say "ayy I did that" and not be embarrassed by it.

What effects is Ryn Weaver using in OctaHate when she starts with the "all around" part?

Is it just chorus and echo/reverb or is she multilayering her voice

The part sounds like a circle to me and I really enjoy it.

Started on these 2 today:

I do a lot of ambient and have a lovely sounding reverse reverb pedal that I'd like to experiment with it, typical shit I wouldn't expect much from though. How would I do it though

My dad genuinely bought me that
"I'm an atheist producer, I used logic and reason"

Fuck
I mean...
I don't use reason

I love the second track.
Keep working on it.

you're not very bright are you.

If you're not a tremendous faggot then it's a very useful tool. Put it on a low percentage and gainstage it properly to add a little bit of a bite and beef to the channel. I normally use it on around 2-5%. that image there is using it less as a corrective method to beef up a sound, and more as a creative method as to purposely add a little more distortion. that's not music. that's sound design. creating some dirty sounds for my dissertation.

everything can be meme if it's overused really badly by stupid kids.

put sausage fattener on a parallel compressed track with a 2-7% and maybe 2% colour and you're looking at giving it that little bit of dirt that sits nicely.

anything can be good when used well.

I've never heard of it but what's the deal with it?
Isn't it just some saturation and compression?
>>
>>63378695
i've had my ath m50s (the old ones, before the X series) for around 6 years, they're still serving me well. Is that an AT2020 or 2050?

also the clip is nice, well spread out frequency wise. i like it.

here's my work. sadly it's meant to be going along with a visual scene but fuck it, here's one of the blaster weapon sounds i made.

https://clyp.it/w33mqetm
>>
>>63378786
it's pretty much just saturation, distortion, compression. It's just the particular way it does what it does. just a gentle touch from it can bring some elements forward nicely.
>>
>>63366393
If the vsti you are using for your drums is any good, it should have multiple outputs that you can route individual sounds to if you need to. You can apply fx etc to these channels. So it just depends on your drum plugin.

Hey prod! Ableton looks amazing with colors inverted (idk if you can do that on linux or windows tho)
>>
>>63379603
yes it does. though you can just change skins.

i rarely use ableton, i'm figuring out how to do logic skins

AT2020.
Got it a couple of days ago.
I love it.

Your clip is pretty cool. I love sound design and I'd love to do FX for short movies, games etc.
I love tweaking sounds and mess around with FM and distortion

yeah the 2020 is okay, a little brittle on the high end but many cheaper microphones are. Due to them being of cheaper parts. My NT1-A was. I'm saving up for a u87.

They're worth what you pay though. in fact they're worth so much more than what you pay.

I just had to pass up a soundfield mk4. however the guy won't ever be able to sell it so if he gets desperate i'll offer him £500 and see what he says.

those first 3 clips are nice, pretty clean. good mixes thus far

in regards to your loving of FM and distortion, look at these plug-ins...

Crazy Ivan
Ohmicide
ZAP
Fracture

they're damn good for that kind of sound

>>63380040
yeah i did. I got my slinky out, stuck some contact mics i made to it, recorded it, that's one layer. Some processing later it sounded good.

I layered a kind of digital mech sound i made by taking a hammer to some sheet metal, pitching it down and stretching it, using FRACTURE to fuck up the sound a bit and give it a shape and then layered the sound of a baby elephant screaming that was modulated using CRAZY IVAN.

I then added in the sound of a cannon being fired as a little low end punch.

i'm a fucking moron and didn't save the project file after bouncing.

>>63380040
also sorry, nearly forgot to feedback a little.

ambient hop isn't my thing. So maybe i can only really comment mixwise. I'm not keen on the kick sound, it's a little too poppy and boxy. The high end sounds nice, really articulate and detailed.
>>
>>63378604
Lmao
>>
>>63380219
Well it's good enough for me!
>Crazy Ivan
>Ohmicide
>ZAP
>Fracture
I dunno about the others, but I have Ohmicide and I love it.
I tend to do all of my distortion "manually now" though (isolating and distorting frequencies, crossfading between different kind of distortions etc).
>>
>>63380306
yeah man if you're not having people pay lots of money then there's no point going out and dropping loads of cash on a microphone. i've got some great sounds from cheap microphones like the nt1-a.

Yeah ohmicide is fucking great, the issue with fracture and crazy ivan is that they're not made carefully, you can quite easily accidentally bounce out audio forever if you don't disable "include audio tail in file". you'll literally bounce audio for all eternity. That and the settings you make will not sound the same each time you play through it. You need to bounce out multiple takes and pick the best one.

your manual way of distorting is probably more sensible, much more control.
>>
>usually make techno beats mostly from scratch or single samples
>go full sadowik and just chop some stuff up
>it sounds better than my previous stuff and took a tiny amount of time in contrast
why bother friendos?
oh and this felt really unsatisfying
>>
>>63380219
>i'm a fucking moron and didn't save the project file after bouncing.
Yeah you are
But you're also pretty good at what you're doing
>>
>>63380552
haha thanks man. Yeah i came back, looked at the computer and just felt like shit.

Sometimes i just hit a brick wall and can't think of how to make the sound i want. Sometimes though it's as easy as go outside, drive about and see what i hear. If there's something that sparks interest then i'll give it a go.

I find sci-fi spaceships and weapons easiest though.
>>
>>63380413

Because I think music is fundamentally a process of *personal* expression.

If there's more of someone else there than you, you never really expressed anything. While it may be good music, the process of expression is weaker and less fulfilling. I began watching his tutorials when I first switched over to Ableton, and I quickly realized within about a week that his skills had hilariously stagnated to a point I reached incredibly quickly and used mostly methods that I felt horrible and insecure about, even as a beginner. Oh, but he can master a generic four to the floor stomper for a mom friendly DJ set and make it sound good on your iPhone speaker. Anyway, that's kind of tangential, but you get the idea.

Is this a good laptop for producing, maybe about 6 VST instruments and tons of guitar tracks?

>win10
>i5 6200u

Goal is to have 64ms latency recording guitar tracks through VST sims, and not stutter too much.

Get a small SSD for the OS and a bigger external hard drive for storage. 500gb will fill up quick in music production and is unnecessary and wildly overkill for an SSD. This will also be exponentially cheaper in the long run.

>>63380740
I agree tho, his way of writing melodys is also kinda weird, dude has no understanding of any theory, rhythm whatsoever

seems to be likeable dude tho
