I'm currently doing my dissertation but I do production and want to give as much advise as possible.

I rarely produce as in make electronic etc. I haven't seen one but do you guys think /mu/ would benefit from an engineering general? I work for a small music recording company, do some studio work and have plenty of experience.

Is there enough of a demand or should it just stay as an offshoot of prod?

That said.

Post your favourite recently used microphones cunts!

I have been given an offer of a 1960s/70s vintage calrec mic. Potentially cheap. Anyone got experience? I'm going to test them tomorrow hopefully

Cool. I'll do one tomorrow.

It's weird, despite playing instruments my whole life, being a sound engineer has made me hostile to musicians. Useless cunts.

maybe it's because I'm over exposed to stupid egotistical kids that think they're the next big thing. Getting a talented musician in is a godsend. Means I don't have to re-do many tracks.

Also I'm going to list off a few good plug-ins. These are all free and worth a check.

BSc Audio Technology, it's mostly audio coding, sound design and foley for movies/games, sound theory and also sonic art. Some electronics building stuff too. We recently bought a buchla 200e. Waste of £30,000 imo but it looks cool when all the lights start flashing
>>
>>63333713

I did that at Stow College/Cali Uni in Glasgow but moved to multimedia technology in my last year - I would've liked to have done more VST dev though, instead I got swept up by the whole web thing in the early 2000s cos it looked as if there were more jobs there.

What jobs you aiming for, some sort of sound design thing?

How did it all workout for you?

Ideally sound design in film/tv/games. Maybe some freelance too, but I would prefer to be part of a team. I've had my name tossed around and a lot of schools have paid me to do audio for their productions, I work with a tiny studio, a buddy of mine who works full time in a decent studio wants to set one up with me but that's a big task to work with.
I actually did a little sound design for the game Verdun, it was implemented for a few weeks and people said it sounded great and got good feedback but they eventually took it out and added their own guys sounds. I'm in the credits though I think

I would enjoy doing sound for animations like Archer/Rick and Morty/American Dad. I'm also happy to go into college level teaching.

t-hanks

I have a hardware question actually that is really rather specific to the piece that I have but I figure I'll give it a shot, I have an Akai MPC60II with a rec in function that either doesn't work or I'm a blithering idiot. There's a signal threshold (changeable) that needs to be crossed in order for the sample recording to start, and everything I have put through it hasn't started recording (Roland R-8, Juno-1, turntable). I've only used TS cables for the process and I've deduced that it either requires a TRS cable, I need a preamp to boost my signals, the connector for the Rec In jack was jostled out of place during shipping, or I'm still just a blithering idiot. If you might know what the issue is please let me know, if you need any questions answered I will.
>>
>>63333265
>engineering general
it would be extremely useful...
but only when I get a place to record on my own. Doing everything with midi controllers/plugins is relatively str8fwd.

Awesome stuff though! What should my first mic buy be if I'm planning on recording mainly vocals?
>>
>>63334224

Did freelance web design/dev for 5 years after I graduated then drifted back to music - wasn't into the business side of stuff and I never could make enough money (wasn't firm enough with my clients) so I got a database admin job that pays decent but leaves me more free time to faff around.

Sound to video in any form would be great to do - you'll meet so many varied people from movies to TV and advertising, although I used to do radio ads a lot when I was audio engineering in my youth - ad people are a bit odd, the metrics they use to measure "good" don't match what audio people would use...

>>63334224
Been looking more into Lemur development recently since it got ported to IOS and Android, but I'm thinking that either PureData or Max is a good thing to be able to integrate, so yeah it's one I'm going to try to concentrate on over the next while.
>>

>>
so i have songs that i have written and can play competently on physical instruments

is this the part where i learn how to use some software
>>
>>63334345
Right, Ive never used one of those but I have heard of them.

Try looking at the connectors and seeing if there's any loose connections, if that all seems fine then yeah try a balanced 1/4" instead of unbalanced. Give it a go and see what happens. I doubt that would do anything.

I know you've probably tried this but worth an ask, have you set the threshold to its lowest it can go? The issue sounds weird and should be simple to troubleshoot. All software updated/installed? See if you can boost your signal using a pre-amp/interface but try to just borrow and not buy one, may be a waste if you don't already have one.

Honestly I'm not sure. I'm not one to use drum machines I'm afraid
>>

You know what's odd? Googling "MPC-60II recording threshold" brings up a post on MPC forums in Dec 2015 by someone with the same problem, and what looks like the same equipment - is that you, and you're still stumped by this?

>>
>>63334493
Okay cool I'll start one off tomorrow then.

Well if you're wanting to keep it relatively cheap then take a look at the rode nt1a. The high end is a little brittle but to be honest, they sound great for their price. They're around £120. You could look into the "sontronics stc-20". I regret getting an nt1a as my first over that. I've never used it personally but it's sontronics and 95% of their stuff is fanfuckingtastic.

If you're being really cheap then look into Beringher large diaphragm condensors. They have a pretty high noise floor and the rode nt1a is actually one of the quiet floored microphones around if you can get over the brittleness.

Hey an nt1a could actually be a decent thing to get, for around £200 you can get them modified to take a capsule similar nearly identical to that of a Neumann U87 and they're pricey as hell.

Basically:

Rode NT1a - damn good for price but slightly brittle high end, you probably won't even notice it though

Sontronics STC-20 - still pretty well priced at around £160 and sontronics is a very good company

Beringher is dirt fucking cheap but serviceable.

Depends on budget to be honest. All of these microphones will be good for vocals/acoustic guitars etc

>>63334512
Ahh well you probably know more than I do when it comes to application building. It's not my strong suit. Ad work would be cool too, I know what you mean by how some people can be fucking weird to work with. Be always wanted to do stuff for animation or film. Animation just sounds like so much fun.

>post your recently used mics
I don't have a pic anywhere, but an Oktava Mk-012 pair. Good for nearly any situation I need them for. Careful though, there's a lot of fakes out there. Might be easier to find for you in yurop.

Do you have to do some sort of applied instrument for your degree, and what are your requirements for graduation outside of course completion?
>>
>>63334869
Awesome. Great advice. Will probably get the Rode and if it comes to it do subtle EQing on vocals to mask the brittleness
>>
>>63334872
Oktavas are great man.
>Do you have to do some sort of applied instrument for your degree, and what are your requirements for graduation outside of course completion?

Not entirely sure what you mean by that? Sorry it's past midnight and I'm not thinking well

Got to finish all work related to the modules I specialised in, dissertation. That's its I hope. I'm not really clued up on how uni works, I just do what I'm told to get done and enjoy what I can.
>>
Any advice on making beats sound less repetitive on a sampler?
>>
>>63334997
don't mention it,
here's a screen cap of an EQ i used on my friends voice which was recorded with an NT1a

i'm aware that on the visual eq you can see a lot of low end cuts but no high cutting, i know i said it's a brittle(ish) microphone but that can be useful at times, in a mix it may come through perfectly well. That eq was bypassed and then i used the API one, it had a slight bit of boosting on the highs, yes that's weird to do with the brittle microphone but i only mentioned it was brittle as a warning, i've never really had any issues with it at all, i think it sounds great but still, you may find it brittle, all down to the performer and the song. This guy was a bit of a crooner so it was actually quite nice.
>>
>>63335029
I'm nearly finished with a BA in Composition and New Media. I kind of do what you do, but I end up doing a lot of performances and installations. I also take courses in music theory, pedagogy, and lessons in a specific instrument that I will perform at a Jury. But that is all technically coursework. Instead of a dissertation, I need to submit a portfolio of works to be reviewed (to the same professors that make up the Jury). Just wondering if you've had to create some sort of material to submit, or if it's just that dissertation you mentioned.
>>
>>63334872

On my course we had to complete the modules, pass the exams, complete the group project and complete and present your dissertation.

Rather than having a specialist instrument music/audio technology focuses on the processes of production rather than performance - what examiners are looking for is an ability to complete work to specifications and briefs, and to explain each decision you make along the way to demonstrate understanding.

>>63335029
>I'm not really clued up on how uni works

Make sure your write-ups are as detailed as possible - it sounds shady but it's the process that matters more than the finished product, uni is to prepare you for what you'd have to do if you're doing this for a living, it's why they're so strict (unsympathetic even) with deadlines because that's how a client/employer would be.
>>
>>63335208
No issues with brittleness? Awesome. Mostly low-register stuff anyways. Thanks!
Also, lol at Sausage Fattener after API-550a in your vocal chain.
>>
>>63335301
yeah i just have to complete the modules, group work and dissertation. My write-ups are detailed, i know what you mean about how it's process over product, i finish for good and graduate in a few months.

>>63335357
nope. none. maybe a little bit of sibilence but that's about it. Yeah API-550a is a damn good EQ, sausage fattener is never used on the signal chain much more than 6-7%. any more and you're just ruining the sound, yeah if you're using it on parallel compression then go fucking nuts but not on the main channel.

i feel like sausage fattener got a bad reputation from EDM kiddies that just chuck it on tracks. Honestly if you use it really gently and gainstage it correctly then placing it on your master or a mixbuss can really give a track some balls. just less is more as usual.
>>
>>63335208
>This guy was a bit of a crooner so it was actually quite nice.

If you listen to Nat King Cole recordings there's always a lot of top end too for sparkle - usually valve mics.

>>
>>63335772

They're great with brass too - there is (like in N. England) a big tradition for brass bands in the mining towns in Scotland and I used to record a few, years ago. The guy I worked with showed me how to set up Decca trees for orchestras and choirs and (like Nat King) the thing I noticed was how little was added to the recordings later in terms of EQ, and even reverb - it was enough to let a bunch of nice mics capture the sound and I still get more goosebumps with a well recorded brass section or a vocal than any other sound.
>>
Any advice on "finding" what direction I want to go in with my music?

Right now I don't really have a clear vision of what I want to do and it's really making my motivation and inspiration suffer. It's been like this for a long time.
>>
>>63336049
Oh wow that's awesome. I find that the less processing that you need to do then the better. Having a performer, gear and take being perfect to the point of only using a little compression and EQ roll off is like finding the holy grail. I've been taught decca trees but I'm yet to have the chance to implement one.

I'm heading to a local fort soon on one o their historic firing days and recording historical artillery firing from the 1700s up until Second World War. Should be fun. I'd love to record a big band though. Used to play in a (small) big band when I was in school
>>
>>63336060

Try a bit of everything - you can only make a choice when you know what choices you have available to you.

Hassle bands to let you record and mix them, find singers and rappers that want exposure and offer to record them for free, video game devs, small movie producers, even YouTubers - just try everything that you can that involves working with sound.

I've been sitting on these tracks for a while because I'm a bit conflicted.

https://clyp.it/d3zpbssr
https://clyp.it/u1vgne3b

For a while I've been doing a more synthesizer-based approach to music. Think Solvent mixed with a bit of Orbital here and there.

I decide to make a hip-hop beat or two inspired by Nujabes and Joji (the tracks above), and I send them to my musical soul mate. He then tells me that these are the best tracks/ideas I've ever made, despite me spending less than 30 minutes on each.

I don't know if he:

*loves that I'm doing hip-hop because that's the genre he himself produces the most, or...

*is bullshitting me because I'm finally trying something new.

What do /prod/?

>>63336060
This might sound really stupid, but watch TV, go to your nearest vaguely urban area, and above all, listen to NEW music.

That's what I do for motivation and inspiration anyway.
>>
>>63336315

It's proper challenging, cos you're working with a lot of performers at one time and there's such a focus on getting a complete single take that ticks all the boxes.

Guns will be fun - haven't done that before - lots of line attenuators will be needed I'd guess?

Another thing with single-take stuff like orchestras, choirs and anything with multiple mics - fucking best stands you can afford.

If a mic boom starts oscillating up and down on a crappy loose-fitting stand every time a percussionist hits a timpani you'll hear the phase shift as comb filtering on the recording.

I'm sorry, it's not that simple. When a computer gets up near it's RAM limit, it slows down in a few ways which may decrease performance substantially; running an application as large as Ableton, with a few Serum instances and maybe a few megabytes of loaded samples in Simpler instances, will often increase load times by factors greater than 2x

Taking things in a different direction.

Thoughts on the sample? This could go a lot of ways, curious if anyone has ideas of what could go on top of or after this.

https://clyp.it/2ikgz2v0
>>
>>63337647

I'd noticed that replacing a cable was what was suggested in the thread, but these units are built to be able to operate with standard unbalanced cables carrying line level signals and what you seem to be seeing is no signal at all, rather than even a very low one.

This would point to either a configuration setting within the sampler (for example is there a menu to choose which input to record from?) or some physical wiring issue inside the unit - if the input sockets are soldered to a board and the board connects via a ribbon cable to another part of the sampler (as is the case with my S2000) then even a casual visual inspection could be made to confirm if the cables are connected.

Use Google to see what your unit should look like inside and compare with yours to make sure that everything matches, and indeed if all of the parts that should be inside are there - it's not unknown for people selling samplers second-hand to either remove or upgrade RAM before they sell it, and they might have dislodged a cable while they were doing that.

How come when I bounce my track from logic it doesn't sound like it did in the daw? It's always too quiet (normalize is not on) and if I make things louder to match the desired volume, the bounced version creates distortion...

Basically just want my exported file to sound like the master in the DAW. What am I doing wrong? To

is it still worth getting an mpc1000 if im already well acquainted with ableton? I feel like having a dedicated piece of hardware would be a nice break from a computer screen, but I know it lacks some of the functionality that I lvoe about ableton.
I'd probably use it for drums, bass, samples etc. and then bounce the tracks onto ableton for mixing

Producing mainly hip hop
>>
>>63343393
You can use it along with Ableton and get creative, don't view it as 2 separate processes it'll only limit you.
>>
How do I make teh wubs? Is massive really it? Then like eqing it or whatever? Or is there other stuff in order to make truly epic wubs.
>>
>>63343393
MPC2000xl is cryptic as fuaaaark for those of us who aren't used to the OS however once you learn one OS you can pick up the other OSes Akai made around that time relatively quickly I'd imagine as they're quite similar. That includes the SL series samples I'd speculate as what I'm saying is true about the SL3200

Hope that helps now help me make wubs and dope pads
>>
>>63343873
Also the time stretching algorithm on the SL series samples is unique so I've heard.

Most synths can "wub". It's down to the usage of LFOs. Of course some synths are more efficient at it. Massive is the easiest to do it on but anything will to be honest
>>
>>63343393
Also you can use the pads on the mpc in ableton maybe. I know it works with 2000xl in FL
>>
>>63343835
>How do I make teh wubs?
There's about a million ways to make "teh wubz"
>Is massive really it?
It's one way to make "teh wubz", although at this point you have to be really really good to make Massive not sound cheesy because it's been used to death.
>Then like EQing it or whatever?
Post-processing is an important part, you need a sizable effects chain, with EQ of course being part of that chain.
>Or is there other stuff in order to make truly epic wubs.
You bet there is!

>>63342902

>>
>>63345268
No, however you'll benefit by using both, you can even load up FL Studio as a VST within Ableton!
>>
>>63345348
whaaat? how the fuck, why would i do that though
>>
>>63345357
Because FL Studio has shit that Ableton doesn't and vice versa. You'll only be a winner if you use both.
>>
Memes aside, how do I compress sounds so they sound like they "hit hard"?

For example, the main sound in this drop sounds pretty simple but there's something about it that gives it a lot of body and strength and I assume it's huge amounts of compression, but I may be wrong

https://youtu.be/-_2_c8PnbsU?t=108

I'm really bad at using compression, but I can't anything to sound near as loud or hard without it distorting or sounding like shit.

Sorry for the shitpost but I'm actually serious.
>>
How to not let depression get in the way of making music??? I just wanna make house music or some shit but it really kills my inspiration and motivation. Along with the mixture of being at college, dreading classes, and keeping earbuds out of my ears during free time just in case someone wants to socialize. I'm worried about coming off as antisocial. I wish I had the inspiration and drive to make music that I just had a bit ago.
>>
>>63345497
You don't only achieve "hard hits" through compression. However compression definitely helps with that. You might wanna look into parallel compression. Also, as a general tip, the attack on the compressor is pretty important, it gives it that powerful transient hit.
>>63345726
>How to not let depression get in the way of making music?
Don't think about depression, it's gonna be hard, nearly impossible at first but the more you pretend you don't care and that it doesn't affect it, you'll actually start not giving a shit about it, fake it till you make it, works, I can guarantee it does.

>>
To those people here who produce different genres, how do you publish your tracks if you publish them at all? Different Soundclouds for different genres, all on one Soundcloud?

As soon as I have more material I'll probably make 2 soundclouds, one for techno/house/whatev and one for hip hop and downtempo
>>
>>63345851
Techno/House/Hip Hop/Downtempo can all fit into one alias, don't make multiple unless you're really taking off in a totally different area like orchestral music.
>>
>>63345726
Depression is a bitch, its especially hard trying to give advice to people with depression because the depression will just tell them theres no point or something, at least that is how it was for me when i was in the same state of mind

Only thing I can say is try to get lost in your music making so you forget about it, maybe that might help, the first hurdle is just starting up again I guess

>>63345851
I'm probably going to go with the alter-ego thing like Madlib did with Quasimoto and DOOM did with all his personas, that sounds like it might be fun
>>
>>63345884
I feel like the demographic of lets say techno and hip hop beats is totally different tho

I don't know why I care tho, music is just a hobby for me and I'll probably only have 2 listeners a day or so anyway
>>
>>63345977
Use one main alias, don't get too confusing, if anything you can show how versatile you are.
And that's not the right mentality! If you make good stuff you'll get noticed senpai.

>>
>>63346262
You can't :/
Asio sucks I know senpai.
>>
>>63346262
soundflower might be able to do it. not used it in years. hell, if you have a mini jack headphones port and a mini jack mic port, just put an aux cable into them. so the mic input is coming from the headphones out. if you're trying to record from firefox that is. unless you mean so you can use effects then i don't know.

why would you tell them tho?
>>
>>63346938
Well, you don't tell them, simple as that. nobody has any right to come into your home and check. That and the fact that Martin Garrix/SHM use cracked software, it's in videos of theirs. You wouldn't tell them, you'd simply supply them with the bounced audio file.
>>
>>63346983
just because out of courtesy and making sure it was okay, could I be sued though if they were used?
>>
>i5 6200u

Will this be sufficient for recording stuff at low latency, hopefully 64 samples with a 2i2?
>>
>>63347009
I have 8GB RAM, intel core 2 duo 2.66ghz on my older mac machine.

It works but depending on the processing that you're using on the audio. Recording in clean and then mixing it with a higher buffer is ideal. If you're using it to play along with a guitar and using something like Waves CLA guitars then you're going to have issues. Then again that's just CLA. kind of sucky.
