Does my 5-string bass count as an ERB? Because I really can't deal with added higher strings, maybe with a slimmer neck and smaller string spacing, but that would screw up my slap.

Yep. More than 4 on a bass and more than 6 on a guitar qualifies.

Basically, learn walking bass. It teaches you smooth transitions and you can add whatever improvised elements you want in there.

If you're not into that style of music you're not into it. That's just a basic draft. I tend to record most ideas I have so I can remember and build on them later. I got hit by a car last year and have a lot of memory issues now.

I'm working on a death metal demo at the moment as well but I probably won't post that until it's done.

Just got my first pedals. The shim verbs shimmer setting is not great, but I can see it being useful in certain settings, otherwise it's a very flexible pedal for the price.

I brought these cheaper pedals as I've ordered a crowther hour cake and an obscure digital delay and needed some cheap pedals to round it out.

I also had my first jam today. Some friends who have been musicians for awhile wanted to get me over and have some fun and it was amazing. I normally produce electronic music and to play with other people and just make noise with no intention was amazing. I'm so motivated to get really good in the hopes they want to make this a regular thing. We wrote one song today which was pretty awesome as well

Question: I've naturally picked up sweep picking after like the first few months of playing guitar (I've been playing for around one year now) Is there any advantages of strict alternate picking over sweep picking? I get that I should probably learn to do both fluently, but I just feel like alt picking is less efficient.

>>
>>63271317
Well sweep picking is essentially a legato technique for crossing over multiple strings: it gives the listener the impression of a fluid arpeggio much like how a violin bow crosses multiple strings in a single movement. Strict alternate picking is the exact opposite, creating a staccato effect. So rhythmically the two techniques serve different functions. It's also technically impossible to sweep pick single note lines on a single string in succession, so knowing how to alternate pick is a way of being able to play quickly on a single string and remain within the same octave (it's easier to stay in the same register when you move up frets than across strings. I think it's important to remember that the best players have really well-developed chops in both areas. If you listen to his playing, Yngwie's three and five string sweeps are dwarfed by his ridiculously efficient alternate picking technique: the man crosses strings while alternate picking so smoothly it really adds to the perception of how quickly he's playing. I also really like how inventive players can get with sweeping/alternate picking. For example, Guthrie Govan almost never sweeps across adjacent strings (especially when playing ascending runs) and prefers to skip strings to cross multiple octaves; Shawn Lane, on the other hand, used his ridiculous alternate picking speed to play odd note groupings against common time signatures, giving his playing a very disjointed, jazzy feel. So there are definitely benefits to developing both techniques because they'll allow for greater expression later on.
>>
>>63271829
>I just enjoy being on an anonymous board

Yeah me too. Thing is that with a general you're inevitably going to have the same folks posting regularly and I just don't see it being worth getting bent out of shape over someone being known with a single thread.

If he was a trip or avatarfagging /mu/ wide then it would annoy me.

Same anon btw, want a pic to prove it?

>>
>>63270401
My bass teacher wants me to play everything legatissimo, because "staccato is easy once you can play legato". Is he correct? I doubted him before when it come to learning sheet music and some other things, but he always turned out to be correct....

And I do? I give advice and information that is generally fairly accurate or at the least rooted in experience. Whether one specific anonymous poster likes me or not really doesn't bother me. Images help people see my posts and recognise that the information should be valid. I'm not looking for your praise or validation.

>>63271730
I update my images from time to time. I haven't gotten any new noteworthy gear for awhile and I've been busy working on my bikes so I haven't taken any new photos. Got a new neck being made for the K-7 though, so hopefully that isn't too far off.

>>63271829
Getting upset over images, trips, or names is stupid. Almost no one actually cares and when you do run into a genuinely stupid trip user you can just filter them anyway. A sense of community in these more encompassing generals is a good thing.

If I used a trip you'd call me a tripfag. If I used a name you called me a namefag. If I post an image I'm an avatarfag.

Having a tantrum that I dare to post an image on an imageboard and don't shitpost isn't exactly a stellar way to push your point that I should leave.

>Baritone conversion,
A baritone 7 string? You absolute madman.
>>
>>63271852
Okay, thanks for the info, sounds like you actually know what you're talking about, I don't mean I strictly sweep pick, by that I mean I use regular alternate picking but i pick up when going picking strings higher than the string I just picked and pick down when picking a string lower than the one I just picked, so when practicing scales (such as 7 tonic scales) I can blaze through them relatively fast as well as arpeggiate when needed while also retaining consistent picking style, pretty sure it's called economy picking or whatever.
>>
>>63271898
avatarfagging is against the rules because it can't be effectively filtered. Tripfagging is not against the rules and neither is using a name, it's just that inappropriate use is discouraged.
I think you should post images when relevant. Or at least funny. Or any purpose aside from an avatar.
>Images help people see my posts and recognize that the information should be valid.
This is a bad thing. What if, god forbid, you're actually wrong, but use your credibility to convince someone of one of the MANY areas of contention involving gear, technique and theory just by impressing them? Anonymity gives all user's posts equal weight. Some would say that's the primary point of anonymity. Preestablished credibility is how fucking tone polish exists.

My pedalboard:
Boss CS-2
Boss DS-1
Electroharmonix Holy Stain
MI Audio Pollyanna Octave
Joyo Tremolo
Buying an Akai Headrush II

What's the ideal order to have these pedals in?
>>
>>63272037
you make some valid points but you sounded like a teenager doing it.
>>
>>63272018
Yeah, economy picking is just shorthand for any picking motion that uses the fewest hand/pick movements possible to move between strings. But good alternate picking includes knowing how to sort of plan your picking patterns out in advance a bit before you run through your lines. It comes with practicing three and four notes per string patterns over and over. I actually don't normally advocate using a metronome because I never practice with one myself anymore (prefer backing tracks and I can already play most of the guitar music I enjoy) but in your case using one might be helpful if you aren't already.
>>
>>63272046
>ideal order

Meh, it's all personal preference and whatever sounds best for your personal use tbqh.

Personally, I'd go DS-1 > Octave > CS-2 > Tremolo > Holy Stain which is pretty conventional.

There's loads of videos on this shit but as I said, do whatever makes the noise you want to hear.
>>
>>63272089
This, I always heard that you should use a compressor before any kind of distortion, I ended up only using the compression on clean sound and going raw into any distortion effects. Sounds much better to me.
>>
>>63272107
Oops, got mixed up and thought CS-2 was a chorus pedal.

I'd stick the compressor between the trem and reverb in that case.
>>

Guitar -> DS-1 -> Holy Stain -> CS-2 -> Octave -> Tremolo -> Amp

Headrush in the effects loop unless you want all that front-end OD to sound like a busted phone speaker when playing with delay.

Not so much about tuning down as just getting a bit more clarity. I tend to tune to A Standard on my sevens and using a 68-70 gauge string can be a bit much.

Going with:
27" conversion
rock maple 5-pce with bubinga
ebony fretboard
no inlays
Stainless fret upgrade, Med Jumbo
GITD side dots
Profile is being cloned off my current neck, so it's a bit thicker than a typical Ibanez neck.

>>63272037
>This is a bad thing. What if, god forbid, you're actually wrong, but use your credibility to convince someone of one of the MANY areas of contention involving gear, technique and theory just by impressing them?
I don't tend to comment on things I don't know about or that are just going to lead to people getting fired up. If I do I will usually address both angles in relation to what was asked.

The vast majority of things I answer are specification related questions that is objective information.

>Preestablished credibility is how fucking tone polish exists.
It also exists because the business ultimately wants to make money. I'm not selling anything or marketing myself here. I don't think in my entire time posting here I've ever mentioned which bands I have played in, am playing it, or am associated with.

If you don't like my posting, ignore it. It's not hard. Like I said, if I used a trip or a name you'd be writing me a wall of text about how horrible that is as well.

I'm hesitant to say that the complaints are worse than the problem itself, but you're probably right. Still, the complaints people have against tripping are just as valid as those against avataring, with the main difference being that people complaining about trips could be filtering.
I feel like it's a bit of a simple matter.
The policy against this stuff is laid out pretty well in the FAQ and rules. If you don't like the policy, tough. I don't want to put it rudely but there's lots of other sites, some even direct 4chan ripoffs, that reflect your preferences perfectly. Wouldn't you have more fun there?

Go have a look on /o/. You probably can't find a thread without someone going spastic at someone just for using a trip.

>The policy against this stuff is laid out pretty well in the FAQ and rules. If you don't like the policy, tough.
Then report and get me banned. Hasn't happened yet.

>I don't want to put it rudely but there's lots of other sites, some even direct 4chan ripoffs, that reflect your preferences perfectly. Wouldn't you have more fun there?
If my posting bothers you that much then I could say the same straight to you.

I played a large part in writing the /gg/ template. A lot of those links are tied to accounts that I created and content that I uploaded.

I post here because there's active discussion and the thread moves. Go to even the most active guitar forums and you'll be posting and checking back in a couple days to see if there was any response. On the other side of that I can answer questions for people in minutes sometimes that would take days to get a response in a traditional forum.

The 'anonymous' concept very much revolves around /b/. These more specialized boards have room for a sense of community.

>Reminds me of Thunderbird 3. Or maybe that was the point.

That wasn't the point but it's in the ballpark. The idea was a Van Halen 5150 without doing a replica. Same color scheme but instead of doing the EVH pattern it's based on old rally cars.

I chose #3 because it'll be my third guitar. The Thunderbird thing is a neat coincidence though. The #3 billiard ball is also red which I think is cool.

how do I sing and play at the same time?
I always butcher the timing when I attempt to sing and play at the same time. I know in what order I have to play but the timing is all wrong
>>
>>63273832
One of the two has to be 100% automated.
>>
>>63273832
Someone a couple months back said something about alexi laiho's way of learning was to play the entire thing super slowly while singing the words just to learn where everything goes and then just speed up from there. So for him it's less about learning how to play while simultaneously singing and more about combining the two and doing them at the same time as if they're connected.

It kinda helped me somewhat though I'm still shit and mess up constantly.

>>63273918
Yeah but you're not really keeping up with what notes to hit and where in the rhythm your words should come out so it's not as complicated I guess.

What that other guy said about making one of them 100% automated is totally true too, when I try singing I'm not singing the words, I'm just making the correct motions with my throat and lungs to get the words that are needed out. That doesn't even make any sense but whatever. Not having to think about what the words are, just knowing what noises needs to be created in combination with your playing helps for me.

dry cold air sucks the moisture out of the fretboard and dries it out, that's how you get fret ends sticking out because the wood shrank

just keep it in a case when you aren't using it and you'll mostly be fine. oil the fretboard at least once every 5-6 months too.

>>

it really depends on the guitar and how dry the fretboard is

but yes, that could work, but you could also be over oiling it, and that causes it's own set of problems. i wouldn't oil it more than once every two months, but it really depends on the guitar
>>
>>63275490

guitarists question: how many people here actually know how to set the truss rod themselves without running to a guitar repair guy for help?
>>
>>63275557
I do, it's easy honestly.
>>
>>63275545

Okay, I think I will lightly oil it every 2 month or so, with string changing. I'm fucking lazy to put my guitars in case lol.
>>
>>63275295
It can only do good if you have a stable temperature.
>>
>>63275569
I know. But you hear so many people who don't know what it's for or how to set it right. People have said to me it's to set the action or "remove twist from the neck". Even guys who've been playing 20 years have told me complete shit about what a truss rod does, when you actually look into how to adjust it it's straightforward.
>>
>>63275557
i do all my own setups and have been doing them for like 10 years. i basically never go to my tech unless it's some major problem that i can't do, like a leveling job. i don't like messing around with the guitar nut either because most problems related to the nut you'll need to file/sand/shim and if you fuck up and over sand it you basically need to buy a new one.

set ups are not difficult and all you need are like 4 tools - a feeler gauge for truss rod, a ruler to measure string/pickup height, and also a screwdriver to set intonation and an allen wrench or whatever to set string height. that's it. no one should waste money on set ups.
>>
>>63275631
Same here. Electronics, action, intonation and truss rod I do myself, anything that involves cutting into the wood or frets is a job for the tech guy.
>>
>>63275555
the new uploads 4 and 5 are cleaner, 4 being the "cleanest"

I may go buy a mic today since I've been meaning to get one for awhile
>>
>>63275664
i've been interested in learning how to do real work like fretjobs for a while, just never got around to really learning how to do it. i've watched some youtube videos but that's it. there's a lot of little tricks you need to know so you don't fuck up the guitar when you do fretjobs.

i had a chat with my tech and he told me it takes him 2-3 days to fully remove frets so he doesn't chip or fuck up the fretboard.
>>
>>63275715
I'm sure I could do fretjobs but the amount of files and fret presses and fret rollers and shit you need to get started is a ton of money. Plus I've had all my main guitars refretted with stainless steel frets so they're not going to need doing any time soon.

Don't fall for the tube meme unless your preforming, most are way too loud as practice amps unless you stick to/under 1 watt. The MG30CFX makes a lot of nice sounds. Sure, i'm using distortions/fuzzes with a polytone solid state amp which is mostly meant strictly for jazz and I can get a decent sound out of it. You'll definitely get a better fuzz sound than what you have onboard.
>>
>>63276425

They only "work properly" with decent amps, whether it is tube or SS.

I've never heard one that really blew me away, but maybe thats bc chapman himself plays boring pentatonic shred, Lee is great but sounds better when using his modded Squire and the sig artists are all like YouTube gimics that I cant find to be musically inspiring in any way.

Most praise I see them get just seems so ingenuine. People that love Gibsons dont hesitate to say that some models are shit or that certain management has ruined the company, but with chapman its always "they are the greatest thing" and "they couldnt get any better without cosmetic changes like binding" and the thing that I cringe the most is when people say "Rob chapman is a great guitarist and an amazing businessman who makes incredible instruments" and I just get flashbacks to him using the same 2 pentatonic scales every fucking video he jams in.
>>
>>63276347
Although i agree that the MG series are generally good practice amps and that tube amps may be to loud. Stop convincing yourself that tube amps are a meme. They have clear advantages of solid states, they generally sound better(warmer), tubes handles pedals better than transitors and tfw you can just roll of the gain with your guitars volume knob.

The only thing a tube amp has over a good solid state is the breakup.

What's the opinion on Kahler trems? I have a guitar with a Floyd Rose and it's cool but definitely a pain in the ass and right now it's just sitting without strings.

I've been looking at the vintage Kahler units and they seem kind of neat but still pretty pricey, it seems more cost effective to buy a guitar that already has one rather than buying the tremolo by itself.

Yeah, you could roll that MG down the stairs and plug it in like nothing every happened. Making a good amp definitely isn't only dependent on the devices you choose.

A lot of tube amps are nonmaster volume after their earlier predecessors. There are tons more with great master volume controls and power scaling options.

But yeah, 9 volt battery through an IC (Ruby Amp) makes enough volume to sing over. So 30-100 watts plowing through speakers isn't intended for apartment use.

What do you think of the classic vibe strats? I've played a few and the only thing I like better than my mexican fender is the neck but they sound alright for squiers too

i laughed for a solid minute there imagining some metalhead trying to perform on stage and suddenly get drowned out in mexican music. have you tried using shielded cables?
>>
>>63277773
you should probably get a modeler of some kind because most combo amps sound bad plugged in. Since I'm a faggot a lot of what I enjoy about bass come from the tone and I tend to find myself relieved to unplug my headphones from a combo. For that price, try a zoom b3. If you can find a used one you're luckier than I am.

These exist?

I owned an SRX390 for many years. I sold it for a Squier P Bass. The Ibanez's bridge is VERY good. I just got tired of the humbuckers. The P bass pickup sounds so much better to my ears. But the Ibanez was definitely better for fast technical palying.

The strings go in a slot instead of fishing them through the entire way. They're also very thick and bulky and have heavy deuty screws for anchoring them to the body. It's definitely excessive. I do miss it though, it's not required for a quality instrument.

Anything with an active EQ or preamp will use a 9v battery. Mine would die after a month or two, and stopped replacing it, since I could just mess with the EQ on the amp, plus, amps have far better EQ's than the ones in an instrument.

Went to a swap meet today. A guy was selling this Crate amp and cab together for $120. Everything worked.

Good deal? Or is there some secret mystery behind these things?

I have an extra 4ohm 4x12 cab since I put my 8-4ohm Music Man head on an 8ohm Marshall 4x12, I'm thinking about going to my local guitar center and buying a 1992 2x12 Hot Rod Deville. The Deville can be paired with my 4ohm cab and I can have a 6x12 monster, should I do it? I don't really need a new amp but for $400 I might

Pic related, I actually bought the same amp in November because I needed a spare for a gig and the orange cab is the one I'll pair it with
>>
Are active pickups a meme?

Is it NOT the same as just turning up your master volume knob?
>>
>>63281464
Probably he needed money for drugs.
If the cab has good celestions you got yourself an excellent deal.
>>
>>63281464
The head is 90 watts abd solid state. If you happen to like how it sounds, that's a solid deal.
>>
It might not be there next week god dammit. What are the chances of it breaking soon after I buy it?
>>
>>63281638
>abd
I will never understand what this even means, let alone why it's built into the android dictionary.

Anywho, that crate amp is supposedly well regarded in death and thrash circles.
>>
>>63281586
No, they're more compressed than normal humbuckers and EQ'd differently. Whether they're a meme or not is up to you.
>>
Dang. Well I live in an apartment. I definitely don't need a 4x12..... But damn, if I would have bought it in a heartbeat if I was 10 years younger, when I played in a band and could have really used 90 watts.
>>
>>63281586
It's not. They get a distinctively different sound from being active, it's not just there to make them louder.

They suck though, all that extra oomph just ruins the string clarity, do anything else but chug power chords and they just become disappointing.

android debug bridge

>>
>>63281865
Thanks, cause that's pretty much what I thought they were for. Especially since I've only played a high end ESP LTD with EMG 81/85...

My Squier sings like a bell. Couldn't see them improving anything actually. But I might look into switching out the bridge pickup maybe

What;s the most neutral electric guitar? I mean genre neutral, where it doesn't scream any particular theme or anything.

I guess the polar opposite (to my little knowledge) would be Gretsch and Bc Rich

Looking for the Naked Bike of guitars (The inbetween a Harley Davidson Dyna Glide vs Suzuki Hayabusa GSXR-1000

reccommend some HH strats with coil splitting?

Is that where you push/pull a knob, and it makes a dual coil a single coil?

Anyone own a hollow or semi hollow electric? How is the sustain?
>>
>>63281941
That's adb, which isn't in the default android dictionary.
>>
>>63282527
the fact that it's a strat isn't really that relevant if it's HH... also I don't agree with the HH idea. If you want that generic sound you really want the actual 3 pickup configuration.
>>
>>63282527
>Is that where you push/pull a knob, and it makes a dual coil a single coil?
Essentially. It's not exactly like making it a single coil, but it makes it more similar tonally. I have a PRS SE Custom 24.
>>63282686
this guy is probably right though, an HSH superstrat with coil splitting would be better

Fender HHS strat, lunchbox amp
Really want a new amp, anything by Marshall will do (or so I've heard)
playing for almost 3 years, fav guitar would be the Patrick Stump signature by Gretsch.
In a hs band, working on songwriting (alt rock/pop punk, inb4 angsty teen). Tips to writing lyrics, anyone?

I'm absolute garbage at it and I rarely try, so you oughta take my advice with a grain of salt, but
Read more. Read poetry, read your favorite lyrics, read books with big scary words. Practice, doesn't matter if they're shitty lyrics. Just keep at it.
