Does anyone here have any experience with building guitars? I was wondering how I should apply lacquer to the neck
>>
>>63247089
part of me thinks those are beautiful.

the other part of me thinks i'd get sick of looking at it after a month.

left one's great though. totally see it on stage at tame impala or a psych band.
>>
>>63247183
I kinda sorta want a thinline jazzmaster from that builder.
>>
>>63247223
man, whether those look nice or like shit really depends a lot on the colors and their placement. seems like the process would leave quite a bit to chance, which would put me off. i'd have to see the exact guitar i was buying or i'd pass.

what are some really good intermediate songs to learn that are popular but at the same time not completely overdone?

I'm tired of just playing shit like Enter Sandman etc all the time and I want to be able to impress people but I'm not good enough yet to play stuff that always gets requested like Stairway to Heaven
>>

I think you can specify that a little when you order one, im sure that he'dunderstand that was an important aspect.

stairway to heaven is quite an easy song, it's just long and takes a while to learn completely, alos the tab that first comes up when you google it is 100% correct since it was tabbed by jimmy himself
other than that you could learn the eruption tapping solo if you want to impress someone who doesn't know how easy it is

>>
>>63249585
Use tabs+sheet, like with guitarpro or tuxguitar, that way you know both rythm/note to play and where to put it on the fretboard, and you can edit that as well so you'd be playing a D on the fifth fret A string or tenth fret E string, whichever you want.
>>
Best bang for your buck budget amp?
I want to play mostly 80s metal stuff
>>
>>63248243
killing floor isn't too difficult, the hard part is getting that rhythmic strumming down. he's mostly just hammering pentatonics following the progression. i can play it but i have no idea how i could accurately tab what he's doing in it, he's muting strings with his fretting hand to get that punchy rhythm while playing the riff

look up on youtube instructionals for it, it's just easier

forget about an accurate machine gun tab, that's probably not going to happen
>>
>>63247089
really cant decide if i should buy a guitar or not.

i gave it up in highschool and wanted to start playing again. but im 21 i feel like it's too late it will take forever to actually get good. i feel like ill quit out of frustration again and it'll collect dust in the corner and end up being a waste of money.

how do i find motivation? maybe i just like the idea
>>
>>63250030
yeah it's impossible to tab his songs because he always played them differently, I just need the basic idea
>>
>>63250065
buy an expensive guitar, it will motivate you because you know you spent alot of money on it so you might aswell play or live with the fact you wasted some money
>>
>>63250018
Orange Micro Dark + Harley Benton G112 Vintage (or just make your own cab if you're in the US, I'd rather get a quality speaker and a meh cab)
Adds up to around 300€, loud enough to play with a drummer, my only gripe with it is that dialing in the tone you want is mostly trial and error because there's only three knobs.

>>63250065
>it will take forever to actually get good
Practice daily and it won't.
>how do i find motivation?
Set small goals and have idols. >>63250121's advice is good too, having a cheap guitar you're not satisfied with is incredibly unsatisfying.
>>
>>63250065
if you're questioning yourself then maybe it's just not for you

you have be partially obsessed to motivate yourself to practice, that's basically how i learned to play, i was obsessed with led zeppelin and wanted to learn to play their songs

>>
>>63250331
>im somewhat obsessed. i listen to music all day at work and wish i could play the stuff i listen to all the time

well then you'll be fine, as long as you have the drive to want to play that's all you really need. everything else is a by product of wanting to be able to play a song you like
>>
>>63250404
I agree with this, I'm not obsessed with music really but it motivates me when I'm listening. if I'm feeling tired and depressed I go listen to some rock and it makes me want to play guitar
>>

The Fullbore Metal is great. It has waaaaay more distortion than I'd ever need, and I play in like an avant-grind sort of band. I don't have any decent demos of it because we record all our stuff digital, but I can assure you it'll be perfect for hardcore stuff. It can get a little crispy and zippy if you're not careful with it but take some time to get to know it and I'm sure you'll dig. Start with the gain knob up like 1/3 the way. I'm serious, it sounds great but it's fucking savage. You can't just jack it all the way up like a 13 year old with a metal zone.

I play stuff as far as slam death/brutal death metal and I've got the same problem with my EHX Metal muff, I wish I was in a big town so I could find someone to trade it against an OD.

>>63252930
>>63253152
Yeah I know someone who plays guitar in his house with a Dean V and a metal zone through his old HiFi.
I don't know how but it doesn't even sound that awful.
>>
>>63253227
Honestly metal zones could be a lot worse. You have to work with them but they're aren't all bad. The problem is they're cheap, they have the word metal on them, and kids tend to butcher Eruption through Spider IIIs with them and swamp YouTube with videos of it.
>>
>>63249484
Currently tabbing a song. Audacity helps when you can isolate parts of a song or slow them down, though if the song has murky production, it may not help or make things worse.

No idea, that probably depends more on your pickups than on the tuning since swedeath bands that play in B standard sound just as good, and the B string is the same note as the 2nd fret on the A string on a bass.

If you're not doing a lot of barre chords and are a lead player generally and do a lot of melodies, there is no reason to not use perfect 4ths tuning

The guitar is tuned to perfect 4ths, with the exception of the 3rd to 2nd string, which is tuned to a major 3rd. That's why there has to be a position shift when you play scales across the strings.
If you tuned it to all 4ths across all the strings, meaning it would be EADGCF, then you wouldn't have to shift positions and could play patterns much easier
>>
>>63258428
I can confirm. Haven't touched my twelve-string in years
>>
>>63258428
That's why I also want it to be hollowbody/bigsby because I don't really have either of those in my collection so I can always just remove the sympathetic strings and have it serve a unique purpose in my arsenal.

All of those things were optional though, open to any suggestions on 12 strings.

hey /gg/

I haven't played for some years and back when i played it was mostly hard rock and metal. I knew which guitars were good for that back then, but...
Now i want to play through a lot of digital effects (i'm a bedroom producer/synth-head) to spice up my music a bit (we're talking ambient stuff), and therefore i don't really think i need some tacky ibanez or something like that.

Can you guys rec a good $500 guitar which is good for my purpose? I'll use it for bedroom producing and chilling with a 15 watt amp beside i think.
>>
>>63259665
Get something with versatile pickups and electronics, like an H-S-H configuration or even H-S-Sustainer if you want to do odd and unusual ambiant stuff, since a sustainer is just some kind of larger E-Bow.

Special guitars working for only specific genres is a myth, you could use a BC Rich for smooth jazz provided you know how to tweak an EQ anyway.
>>
>>63259789
sweet, thanks. I knew it would have something to do with the pickups mainly
>>
>>63259665
The amp is far, far more important than the amp.

If I were to re-buy a setup, fur under $500, I'd try to get a Kramer Pacer, or Jackson Dinky. Then a used combo amp, at least 30-45 watts. Then, a Zoom GX3. Or a Boss Multieffect.

Don't buy an amp with effects.

Or more budget minded setup
~$150 Nicest Squier Bullet Strat, Or Epiphone LP Special II your local pawn shop has
$100 Zoom G1
$250 for whatever amp you can find

Get everything used, if possible. You save quite a bit of money.

Dont get caught up in it though. Iron Maiden uses entirely single coil pickups. A design most metal players never consider ever using. Jari in Wintersun recorded a lot of solo's with a Telecaster.

>>
>>63257899
Look at the god damned action on the bass VI neck.

>>63257574
I used to think the same thing but once you get used to having the major third to take care of. It also makes some arpeggios/sweeps easy, and most string packs are made for standard tuning anyway.

>>63259824
The things that will influence tone on a guitar are mainly electronics and scale lenght/string gauge, other than build quality and attack of the string.

>>63259909
I wouldn't buy a bullet strat or any cheap epi honestly.
If he wants to play mostly in his bedroom I'd rather suggest getting a decent guitar and an interface along some monitors.

>>63259946
Doesn't Maiden use hotrails ? Plus, they're heavy metal, they don't use that much gain. That being said I've seen Gridlink's guitarist demo some high gain tones with a single coil, but I still think a bridge humbucker sounds better than a bridge single coil for high gain rythm.

Wouldn't a VST be okay for an amp? Like is it common knowledge that VST amps are below acceptable or will i be able to proceed? i was thinkinh of running the guitar through the compter and cover it in VST's instead of spending a fortune on IRL gear. But thanks for the recs.

As far as they go nowadays, VST are decent, assuming you have an interface. I'd say the main place where they're lacking is in high gain and maybe ease of use, as you need to do a lot of tweaking.

I think I don't understand how to write a track.
I can maybe write a measure or two, but afterwards I can't find anything that'll fit "in the same mood".

So basically has anyone got some guides or tips when it comes to just writing songs ?

>>
do any of you guys play without a pick? do you recommend fingernails or bare fingertips?
>>
>>63261546
>but I can't create anything I'm pleased with.
hahhahhahahahhah XDDDDDDD
>>
>>63261546
songwriting is a skill that needs to be learned just like playing itself. just keep practicing. you're going to make a lot of garbage before you're able to make something good. I've been songwriting for 5 years and still all I write is garbage

also seriously consider taking psychedelics, particularly mushrooms and lsd
>>
>>63261546
start with a simple chorus-verse chord progression. Then try adding lyrics. Just build up slowly and don't get caught up in making it sound good at first.
>>
>>63261846
I play electric and whenever I finger pick, I keep my nails short and use the side of my nails to pick. Picking with long fingernails is uncomfortable to me.
>>
>>63261952
I do that too on bass, the sound is quite different from a pick. Hurts after a while though.
>>
>>63261877
I guess, but it's just that I feel like I'm hitting a wall since I can't finish anything, and I'm probably too stubborn to get myself to finish a track that's not really satisfying.

>>63261907
As I said I want to write instrumental tracks, mostly guitar centric. I feel like it'll make me master the instrument better if I focus on the guitar itself instead of hiding away the playing with something else.
That being said, it's what happens in bands, you can't always have the spotlight.
>>
>>63261846
I do it sometimes and I personally can't stand the feeling and sound of finger nails while playing electric guitar. on acoustic its different, but for electric I think bare finger flesh sounds the best.
>>
>>63261877
>consider taking psychedelics
This might sound like terrible advice but I can attest to having gotten WAY better at both playing and writing music after experimenting more with drugs and the like.
Maybe not the best advice for everybody, but there's some merit to it.
>>
>>63261952
I wish I could play with short nails. Tried growing mine out but couldn't stand it. My nails need to get pretty long to get any clearance at all from the fingertip.
>>
How do I make my fretting hand faster?
>>
>>63262371
fret
>>
>>63258291
New and free instillation, no question man
>>
>>63261877
>>63262193
I think it's a matter of who's taking the drugs and what he's taking. I can't do shit on my guitar if I'm high, and it probably wouldn't be better if I took some psychoactive drugs,

>>63262371
Lower your action if you can. Remember that less is more, the less you move your hand, the faster you can go.
>>
>>63258291
>$40 for installation
m8 I can change a pickup in 5 minutes easy. Don't pay somebody for that shit, just do it yourself.
>>
>>63260971
I guess I just like the classic Tele look so I really don't like how the pickup configuration looks. I think they should've made a different designed guitar for that pickup configuration. Of course, this opinion is based on how it looks, I've never actually played a Modern Player
>>
>>63261546
Pay attention to the songs you like and why you like them. Look at the structure of the songs, rather than just miming the riffs. Know how many times they play each part and how they segue between them.

Radio songs are pretty much all verse:chorus:verse:chorus:bridge:chorus, or basically along these lines. They're all three and one half minutes. But making real music is no rules. If you have a riff you love and want to come back to it at the end then make that work. If you want to play completely different riffs all the way through, it's your song so do it. Want to stop on a dime and go completely different, go. If you write songs you're comfortable playing and believe in, then the work is done.

It's also big to get a grasp on the relationships between the instruments. As in what each instrument is doing at the time and what that's contributing to the whole. If the drummer, guitarist, and bassist all just played quarter notes it'd be ridiculous right? Well then think of a fill as a mini solo to chain into the next idea. Think of how the drummer is pushing the tempo to get through an uninteresting guitar pattern or pulling to let a groove sink in.

idk improv a lot and get fuckin good

By working on accuracy and consistency - slow practice is generally best for this.

Practice scale, arpeggios etc slowly using minimal movement and keeping your hand relaxed - flapping fingers and tension will kill speed - When you are comfortable playing like this, increase the speed
