I personally think there's nothing wrong with having more positive ratings than negative ratings, one tends to seek out music one would enjoy so assuming one also knows their taste well enough it wouldn't be odd to assume that more ratings would be over 2.5, i don't think it has too much to do with inflation. It's better than doing like Horbgorbler and just giving out shit ratings

Holy fuck do I have some catching up to do.

Cyclops Nuclear Submarine Captain was some damn catchy lo-fi psych shit. Reminded me a bit of the Pixies. Also kind of reminded me of Ween songwriting-wise, and contained a lot of sick sax (clarinet, maybe?? It's hard for me to tell them apart sometimes) riffs.

Blow by Blow was alright, but was waaay too AOR for me. Ya know Zappa's mediocre guitar-based jazz/blues-rock albums? That's this but slightly more technical and somehow less exciting. Some alright jams on here for people who LOVE guitar music, but simply not my thing I suppose.

The Private Press really underwhelmed me, honestly. I love Endtroducing because of the subtleties of every little detail. Though it won't ever be on the level of SILY for me, I still love it, since it's a much more hip-hop oriented, and again, SUBTLE piece of music. This really had none of that in my opinion. If you REALLY like plunderphonics, I'd say give this a shot, but ultimately, it's a much inferior version of a fantastic album.

If I've learned anything about prog metal, it's that technicality does NOT equal better almost EVER. Well, except for Piece of Time. The reason I love Unquestionable Presence (one of like 5 good prog metal albums) is this technicality and really obvious jazz influence. That's all gone from this, and instead we get a few very technical moments with a lot of thrashy-rehashy stuff thrown in. Would still rec if you're huge on technical/prog metal (like none of you), however Unquestionable Presence will always be better, I guarantee.

Barbed Wire Maggots was FUCKING FANTASTIC. Most of you that have been actually reading my reviews (I thank both of you) know that I really am not a huge fan on noise, but this proves that maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places? By far one of the most textured and interesting albums on this list, my God. I heard someone say this was "avant-teen," but perhaps the avant-teeners were right all long?

Red Score in Tile had a really nice 20 second loop (yum!) that played for ~47 minutes (yuck!). Maybe I'd like this if I was trying to FUCKIN GO TO BED GOD DAMN. I wouldn't say I don't "get" ambient, considering the amount of things I've enjoyed from the genre, but it continues to be the one genre that constantly disappoints.

I listened to two Blind Guardian albums: Nightfall in Middle-Earth and Imaginations From the Other Side. Both of them were more "epic" versions of Somewhere Far Beyond, but contain all the shitty luggage that comes with them being Power/Prog Metal. Really wish they were as folky and interesting as Somewhere Far Beyond. When will these prog metal fuckers learn good stories do not a good album make?

Man, considering how much I used to love the Smiths and the Cure, I thought Jangle Pop would be a shoe-in for me. It's proven to be sort of a disappointing genre so far for me. The Days of Wine and Roses had a few interesting Guitar-Licks, sure, but played out like a really uninteresting Cure record. Last half was much better than the first, though, so it earned a few points back for that.

Ellington Uptown is one of the earliest albums I've listened to for /daily/, and it was quite nice. The first two tracks are some of the best on this entire chart, however, the last half REALLY drags a bit. Seems like this "big band" was as properly utilized in those parts and the first few tracks. It'll definitely require a few more listens before I completely write this one off, though.

Honestly, other than some of Eno's Ambient stuff, I've never really liked a lot of his material. It usually plays out like a much less interesting Bowie album, especially the glamier stuff. Last few tracks are waaay better than the bulk of this, though. Seemed really playful, and if you really love Bowie, give Here Come the Warm Jets a shot.

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was slightly more interesting, due to the more worldly influences, but suffered from some of the same fates as the previous. I really wish Bryne would've taken some of the reigns on this collab, since all Eno "collab" albums seem to be his albums with slight inputs from other artists, just the way albums he produces (like Remain in Light, for example!) are other artists work with a lot of his magic touch on them. I respect this dude as an artist, but I REALLY respect him for how much he's influenced with his production work. Still not totally in love with his solo material, however.

When I keep listening to Velvet Underground solo material, I just would like something like WL/WH or VU&N. Just ONE album somewhat close to that. Every single solo album I've heard is just like their s/t or Loaded but not as good (and I don't even like those that much!). Not really complaining, but if there's anything by these guys that's closer to their first 2 album, PLEASE let me know. Paris 1919 follows this formula (curse) but plays in a more Baroque Pop style. Maybe it's because it's somewhat generic, but there's something really homely and nostalgic about this music. Hm. Can't really put into words why I like this album but am not in love with it, but that's simply how I feel.

Look at that ant crawling on da egg lmao. How'd he do dat?!? Orient was realreal good. Really huge jams, and sorta blurs the line between new-age shit (eh) and free jazz (wew) but that's not really such a bad thing, and maybe there is no line, honestly. I don't know if it's just me, but I hear Ravi all over this shit. I would rec this for everyone, though I wasn't necessarily in love with it.

Finally got around to listening to Kollaps, and while I liked it, I really don't see all the hype behind it. I've liked it more than any EN album I've heard previously (like 2 lmao) and it's a real spooky, aggressive, and ominous listen. Just like that good shit is, mang. Some parts were really long, and hypnotic, and that can go either way. As for fuckin everything on here, give this a chance, though I didn't love it.

And s/t was Orient but better imo. Seriously, this is just fantastic shit with a much more full and lively sound. If you have ever enjoyed a jazz note in your life please give this man a try. LISTEN TO DON CHERRY GUYS CAN I BE JAZZHEAD NOW LMAO.

I listened to two (more) Eels' albums too. Hombre Lobo was much more Bluesy and pretty basic rock album, while Beautiful Freak was a bit more alternative and poppy. Despite being more predictable, safe, and generic, Beautiful Freak actually plays it pretty well. It really confuses me why I enjoyed Beautiful Freak way more than Hombre, considering these elements, but it may just have to do with the fact that I have shit taste (very good explanation). If you're really into alt/indie rock, definitely give the Eels a listen.

I've never claimed to be a huge fan of Bowie, but his more poppy albums like Hunky Dory I've always been in love with. When I heard the stories behind Station to Station, I thought I would LOVE it. Turns out to be a really disjointed piece with not much substance for me. First track was kinda progressive and building, but I just didn't feel satisfied by it at all. Really disappointed, though there are some redeeming tracks on here. Maybe I'll listen to this like 3 more times again just to make sure I'm not shitting on a perfectly okay Bowie album I SHOULD like, but I don't know. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I listened to Post Pop depression a few weeks ago but held off on reviewing it because I thought I was missing something. I guess I'm not. Gardenia is one of my favorite tracks this year, sure, but Josh Homme brings a lot of weak riffs here. People say Iggy has kept his energy over the years, but this is a pretty big piece of evidence to the contrary. Not much substance here other than that, and this sucks since I really like this too.

OH and I also listened to the new Kendrick album. It was alright, but first and last track were ehh...I've only listened one and a half times so far, but I can't see me really wanting a physical or anything of this pretty uneventful unmastered album. 6/10 imo

Giving you an advice: don't grow up expectations of any sort. By the way, i'd suggest more listenings, it's one of his most complex albums, and one of my favs by him (not my favourite tho, i'd rather go with Heroes, Ziggy and Lodger). This is literally Bowie on drugs, funk and krautrock in a vicious tornado of musical orgasm.
>>
>>63231334
I'm not sure about the Beefheart comparison, i guess it's a bit similar but it's mainly just good noise with a bit of parquet courts thrown in.

I think a lot of people didn't like the fact that it wasn't the Parquet Courts we know but I wish more bands would do experimental EPs like this. I hope some of it carries over to the new LP.

I liked this. The second concerto was melancholic with some gorgeous arpeggi in the second movement. The third one was much more grandiose and the piano playing was stellar.

I think the audio recording is great, especially for a pre-war recording. I've been listening to too much Furtwangler trash recordings to know how bad those can be.
>>
>>63231298
>plebier Bowie
Huh? Isn't most Bowie pleb anyways? I really like Low and Blackstar, which are a bit more out there, unless those are Pleb too, but I guess I really don't know. And I've been listening to this album and not enjoying it for almost a month now, so heck off, friendo.

>>63231313
Yep. It has a few alright tracks (LOVE Gardenia) but honestly, a few unnecessary orchestrations, and seems overly produced in parts. Would at least advise for you to give a shot, though.

>>63231334
Damn. I had a few more in my backlog too, I guess I'll remove them lmao.

>>63231379
>Literally Bowie on drugs
That's what I've heard lol. I WILL give this another try, but it's like my fourth listen already. I hope it does a complete 180 on me like Low (listened to when I was 14/15 and thought "what to heck?") or Hunky Dory (thought was overly produced pop garbage at first, around the same age) did eventually.

Considering no one ever questioned me on my Diamond Dogs opinion, I'm lead to believe it's really not that good, right? Won't be giving that another try I suppose.

It was merely a ruse. Nearly all of Bowie's discography is accessible, it's just that S2S and his Berlin trilogy are a little more overtly artsy and pull a few tricky tricks of trickery (S2S with its 10-minute title track, the ambient stuff on Low and Heroes).

Pleb is a meme anyway, people started taking it seriously eventually, but at its core "pleb" and "patrician" are memes.

Dog Faced Hermans is pretty good but loses it way a bit in the second half. I would have liked it to be a bit wilder at times but still really enjoyable. Tigres Leones was some fun garage with a couple good moments.

>Oren Ambarchi & Johan Berthling - Tongue Tied
Dem textures.
Terminus probably posted about this album already, but I'll reiterate that it's real solid if you're into Oren Ambarchi's records. I don't know much about the other guy, but his bass playing was on par with O'Rourke as far as I'm concerned.
The album reminds me a lot of The Necks - Hanging Gardens, instead much slower paced and concerned about drones, textures and atmosphere.
It's really hypnotic and builds layers upon layers of drone, drums and base, progressing at a glacial pace. Did I mention the weird and wonderful textures? They are masterfully interlaced throughout the two tracks' rhythmic backbone in such a natural way that even high pitched droning squeals don't feel out of place.
I'm feeling an 8/10 on this one. I wish it was longer, but perhaps it would stagnate. Also, the ending isn't as cathartic as I usually like.

>Curtis Mayfield - Roots
I love Curtis' falsetto singing and wah-wah guitars, and this album has plenty of both.
It starts with Get Down, a really dirty, down to earth funk track with orgasm sounds in the background (this is about the first
time I hear sex sounds done well in a song). The second track is more lush with a incredibly motivational chorus.
Underground is a more fleshed out version of the demo track which was included as a bonus on Curtis. it has a great guitar solo,
but all in all I actually prefer the more stripped down demo version (it's still a great track, though).
The second half of the album starts with We Got To Have Peace. Mayfield is imho always prone to be borderline cheesy, and this
time he overdid somewhat. That his voice is somewhat muffled is even more detrimental to the song. But oh boy, Beautiful Brother
of Mine redeems the worst track on the album completely. It's simply a great funk song. I've got nothing to say about the last 2
songs, they're somewhat average.
8-/10, I think this makes Curtis Mayfield besides ATCQ the only artist in my library with 3 consecutive 8s in row.
I am considering changing my rating system on rym (maybe to a positive scale). Can it be done?

>Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor [nyarlathotep]
This was a surprise, as I expected both from the cover and the length to find it a tedious listen. Instead, while there was some evident filler, I still was entertained from start to finish. Shoutout to Kick Push and He Say She Say because, other than being banging, they were pretty emotionally felt. While I liked it, there was some corniness in the samples and beats, so I'll give it a 2.5+
>Coil - The Ape Of Naples [Eruditey]
It really is a grower. After every additional listens I always found some new song I liked or loved. First, I want to praise Tattooed man because it was the first that stuck out and for having an amazing lyrical concept. Then, I want to compliment the three perfect songs of the record, which strangely come one after another. Cold Cell, Teenage Lightning and Amber Rain are seriously flawless in every way, from the clean synths to the vocal delivery. I'm not completely sure on Going Up and It's In My Blood but this is something I've long awaited for. (also: what are some coil albums i'd love based on my liking of those three songs alone? thx) 4.0 [WINNER]
>Tiger Trap - Tiger Trap [misha]
Crazy twee pop that, even if has similar tones throughout, manages to be loads of fun. Catchy even during the first listen, I could become addicted to it in the right mindset. 3.0 [WINNER]
>Ariel Pink - Mature Themes [GIVINGbear]
Hypnagogic pop that had tricked me into thinking the record would be very, very good with its first few songs, but then became an excessive mess. It has its highs, and the song Schnitzel Boogie is really up there, but it sometimes looks like a parody of itself; and the last song really ends it on a bad note. 2.5

Jane Doe isn't good and definitely not when you're new to metal, which he probably is. Songs About Leaving is literally the blandest and most vanilla pick for any slowcore, literally any Red House Painters album would be a better pick for a slowcore essential. Low also does it way better than Carissa's Wierd, and I'm not even mentioning Lisa Germano or The For Carnation. Carissa's Wierd are the Antlers of slowcore.

Are Feels and The Moon & Antarctica worthwhile if I thought MPP or Lonesome Crowded West weren't that great?

>>63234061
I'm not sure how I've not listened to Heaven or Las Vegas yet, it's Scottish (!) dream pop.

>>63234185
What makes Jane Doe bad if you're new to metal? I'm not into most metal but I do like some.

And I've already heard Selected Ambient Works.
>>
>>63234343
Feels is very different from usual anco albums so imho you should try it.
>>
>>63234343
No both bands haven't released a single good album
>>
>>63234343
M&A is clean and poppy compared to TLCW
Feels isn't as clean and poppy compared to MPP
so it depends on what your preference in that regard

Yeah I've been on hiatus for a bit, I was in no mood for new music and wanted to take a break from /daily/ to listen to stuff I already owned.
That itch has been scratched now, and I'm ready to listen to some new stuff.

So if anyone has any recs, I'll gladly take them.
>>
This is fucking terrible. Bland and boring. God i hate waifu fags
>>
>>63234717
ok you have now OFFICIALLY claimed daikanjyo
if you ever want to change your rec (i don't think so) you'll have an opportunity when i finish this circle
if any other winner wants to rec, feel free to do it!
>>
>>63232493
you know you can actually learn that stuff right?
>>
>>63234830
*I could
No time for that unfortunately. Going on 4chan and listening to music while pretending to work is a thing, playing instruments on the workplace is another.

>>
>>63234945
maybe some feels or the moon and antartica will do the job
>>
>>63234949
you sound like you wish you would learn music but you can't bring yourself to try. lame

Also, I'm going to attend a lesson about music in my school soon. What could I talk about?

I was planning to cover most of the usually not-so-much-talked-about genres but I would prefer not to scare all the normies that will be listening to me.

Any suggestion about the plan I could follow? Keep in mind that I will have only 2 hours to talk about everything.

I'm just racking some money up in order to have a more satisfying life afterwards. By 2 or 3 years i'll probably manage to live without doing absolutely nothing.
>>

>>
>>63235051
>i'll probably manage to live without doing absolutely nothing
now THAT will give your life meaning and purpose!
>>
>>63235082
It will give me time to find something that will though. And that could include playing music. But now's not the time.
>>
>>63235078
Probably I'm going to talk about that too, but the problem is that I have absolutely no idea about how to set up and organize everything. Should I start talking about classical music? Do I have to play a song for each genre? How do I introduce people to Noise without them running away from my classroom in tears?

o paon - courses
beautiful singing on this album. the vocals are layered very nicely.
the strings on this album are killer! very carissa's wierd-esque. in fact, the whole thing reminds me a bit of songs about leaving.
the only thing offputting about this album is that, while still wholly engaging and wonderful, the instrumentation is a little bit sparse in certain songs.
8/10
>>
>>63235130
Play it quiet enough, noise isn't as scary as you might think
>>
>>63235173
i forgot my trip lol
>>
>>63235130
Stick to entry level stuff and organize genres in chronological order. Playing a sample of a song from each genre is a good idea to keep people engaged.
My music professor played Einsturzende Neubaten for a pretty full lecture with normies and it went fine. Obviously a few people were freaked out, but he was scholarly and serious about it so what could people do?
>>
>>63235037
I think doing something about Krautrock would be pretty interesting. Pretty unknown genre and at the same time not too strange, since it comes from dad's favourite prog and puts the bases for teen's favourite electronic.

Thanks, I will soon write down a list of albums and genres I'm planning to talk about and I'll post it here so you can help me revising it.

Hope they won't expel me

Today's album
>Boris - Amplifier Worship
Perhaps with a skeptical view you might say that Boris, in their album Amplifier Worship (1998) only have to boast a fantastic, sludgy guitar tone. But I think that the music creates an essentially hypnotic soundscape through the droning, and it's through this hypnosis that the beauty of the music is found. The tracks, building up an hour-long epic, move quite slowly, transitioning from different styles of sound that contribute to some undefinable, chaotic theme.

full review will be on rym :)
I'm too tired to listen to anything other than dream pop now, goodnight everyone
