Nah. They are unique in that every album they have released has gotten more regressive and primal. It's a cool take on music just because more bands try to become more progressive and "mature" songwriting wise, but these guys always go on to become more primitive. I have yet to listen to the latest album where this may not be true, but it's true for the ones before it. This has allowed them to reach a level of primitive that most war metal doesn't go towards.
As for Wrathprayer they are also far from generic war metal being closer to something like Pseudogod but with more black metal feel to it.

I think I understand what you mean. Most people like music that's a little bit challenging but safe enough for them, war metal isn't really challenging however. There are no fancy or techy riffs, nor will you find progressive song structures. It's straightforward hate and aggression, and most people like for there to be clear cut riffs that tone down the aggression as opposed to incoherent screaming over indecipherable noisy guitar and drums. In a sense war metal is more of an atmospheric thing.
Post personal favorite 2015 releases that didn't get the press and love they deserve.
Imma start with Divine Blasphemy's Beyond The Portal. 6-8 minute long songs (except the final song on the album) that just pound you with quality riff after quality riff. Black metal stuff without gimmicks that is actually full of quality riffs without being a war metal band or melodic Dissection approach (looking at you Mgla) is hard to find and this album does the job well though.

Which makes it really redundant to me because there's only so many ways you can make incredibly primitive music sound engaging. Slightly different themes and production styles don't distract from all the bands in the genre basically having the same goal and achieving it to a varying degree of success. There's a huge misunderstanding that any band that does downtuned guitars to have a thick tone is automatically sludge (Electric Wizard, Mastodon, etc.) No. people often forget that there has to be a hardcore punk influence for it to be sludge, too.

You know you can have actual sludge metal and still have interesting stuff happen. Recent trend that's had a lot of quality is the black metal and sludge combo.
