I only got into melodeath a year ago so I speak from a different perspective, but early In Flames and Bodom wrote great songs with strong riffs
Soilwork is pretty meh apart from NBC and last 2 albums which are surprisingly good
Scar Symmetry are mediocre and the only interesting thing about them was the vocalist
Dark Tranquillity remain the most consistent in my opinion, they tried a few stylistic changes, but never sold out, their songwriting is also more advanced.

Oracle Moon is the 2nd best album there once again. Heartwork was decent but not good, early Carcass is much better. Purgatory Afterglow I put more in prog death, I like it. Crimsons I & II are a different story. Many of these bands I already addressed previously but for the others
