Something interesting is going on here. It's like noise meets hip-hop beats. Kind of reminds me of Tabacco's album "La Uti", its abrasive but kind of dancey. There is the problem of cohesiveness between tracks, where even though each track has a close similar vibe, stylistically this album is all over the place. So I wouldn't mind seeing future releases from this project, just need to see tighter and more cohesive experience.

Holy shit this is fun as hell. This is the most stupid vocals I've ever heard. And the music is just as crazy and spastic. The length is perfect because it's not long enough to be annoying.
Early Boredoms is not as good unfortunately. It's often completely incoherent. Some songs are genius but a lot are terrible. It's also 10 minutes longer than Soul Discharge unfortunately. And FUCK PEOPLE BURPING ON RECORDS.

One of the most Patton-core album never made by Mike Patton. I mean the singer's voice sounds so much like Patton it's ridiculous and the music sounds a lot like Faith No More, King for a Day...-era. I'm fine with this and I kinda liked Dog Fashion Disco's Adultery which was made by pretty much the same guy. but Adultery was more convincing in its variety. This one is more tame and less inventive. And boy some songs are bad. Also, fuck secret tracks seriously

Uhhh... I don't know what to say. It features what are probably the most terrible vocals in all black metal and I really don't know if i like it or not to be honest. I didn't know whether to laugh or not during the 3rd track when he started to sing "la la la's". The quality is absolutely terrible, even for most bm standards and the music is not particularly stellar. And then all of the sudden the 2 last tracks appear and it gets full Dark Ambient. Track 5 has beautiful atmospheric synths with twisted chants. Last track is beautiful and soothing. it could almost be a t e l e p a t h song.

So I got done listening to this. I still like Nomeansno's first album (Mama) best. I know it's not as dynamic because it's mostly bass and drums, but I feel like they also blended a lot of genres together and I'm not really a hardcore punk fan, anyway.

>Savages - Adore Life
I really really liked Silence Yourself. A lot of aggressive bass lines and, most importantly, Gemma Thompson’s feedback. The latter specifically pokes me in my brains.
The new album is a different experience. There are still pummelling drum/bass duets but there are certain shifts in the vocal and guitar delivery. Jehnny Beth brings in some variety with off-time spoken word sections that accelerate or decelerate the whole pace of the tracks. It is a nice device and I am glad that she brought it in, but I feel like there isn’t a single moment on the album where she actually “energizes” the track. Building up the tempo and bringing the raw screams like she did on “She Will” for example does hurt the record.
Now Gemma delivers something new. A murky and ugly tone that reminded me a lot of Chelsea Wolfe’s new effort. Not quiet doom metal, but it does sound like it is somewhat influenced. I do miss some of the strong clean guitar strums that were on Silence Yourself. I really shouldn’t talk that much about the other album, but that’s all I could think of while listening to this album.
Speaking of Silence Yourself, what made it stand out is the track listing order. After the interlude of Dead Nature bought in a medley-esque finishing with a strong track. On Adore Life, we get a murkier ending with an outlier titled T.I.W.Y.G.. It has a pretty cool song structure with several shifts and showcases the post-punk power these chicks have. It is very groovy but suffers from occasional dull lyrics.The latter are a definite step-down but it’s really not what I got this album for. The murky guitar feedback and badass bass lines is what you get though.

The final comment I want to make is on the closer. Marshall Dear was THE track on Silence Yourself with a menacing and melancholic melodic section mixed with Beth’s cold vocal delivery and a sax section that brought you out of the journey. Mechanics…well it is one of the weakest tracks here. My favourite thing about it was Thompson’s guitar scratches right at the death of the track but the rest was nowhere near the standard Savages set for themselves.
Summing up, cool album that I liked. Lots of murky shit, fantastic guitar (Gemma is cool as shit with all that noisy feedback, I’d hire her for my band any day) and occasional tempo rushes that make me want to run. Good album, I liked it. Not on par with their debut though.

Yeah well I was never a big fan of the calendar thing. If it works for people I guess that's good, but it doesn't really for me. I'll still listen to an album or two a day usually, but I like to pick the albums based on what I'm in the mood for. I still like charts tho.
I prefer to think of the listening I do as post-/daily/. The essential concept of listening to one album per day on a chart is essentially there, but there is more variability in number of albums per day and often albums are listened to without ever being on a chart.
I think neo-/daily/ is more the resurrection of the old /daily/ practices of making calendars and holding tournaments. If anything you're the one that's neo-/daily/.

Eat a Peach (1972) by the Allman Brothers Band, recommended by Tripfriend on the spot
I've loved the title and cover of this album for a long time, but never ventured to hear it. It truly sounds as warm and sweet as those things suggest. Eat a Peach is a motley collection of tracks: the first side recorded after leader Duane Allman's death and the last before, with the 30-minute live 'Mountain Jam' as a go-between. As such it feels a little like a box of memories, old snapshots in an album which awaken bittersweet feelings.
That half-hour live jam is not just the centrepiece but also the high point. Every player in this band was talented (it shines off of them) but none of them feel the need to show it, instead hitting the most laid-back tone they can. Jam bands are usually associated in my mind with large crowds and devoted followers, but this feels like an intimate Sunday at home. Every solo, even the drummers' duet, is nuanced but relaxed. The almost fugue-like entry of the soloists sets an atmosphere of co-operation, not competition. The rhythm section pushes gently forward with an especially mobile and wandering bass, whilst one can simply sense the benign smiles on the duelling guitarists' faces. An unexpected triumph.
The rest of the record isn't flawless, but just as gorgeous. The Alllman Brothers strike me as a slightly less goofy Grateful Dead: hear the covers of Sonny Boy Williams II and Muddy Waters here and understand that these aren't shameless rips but heartfelt tributes, however dorky. The originals deserve pride, too, with 'Blue Sky' in particular touting tasteful harmonies (in singing and soloing). Only 'Les Brers in A Minor' sticks out as a half-baked attempt at something almost approaching prog in its theatricality, and this is more than made up for by the rest. The poignant solo by Duane Allman that closes the album reminds me that Eat a Peach is a portrait of a band in transition, but negotiating it with dignity and resilience.
Marion Brown - Marion Brown Quartet (1966)

Avant-jazz that does little to stun. I think that the worst thing an avant-garde record could do is just go through the motions, that's like the opposite of what avant-garde is. There's still some nice stuff here, like the bass playing and the drumming (its Rashied Ali, no shit), and its certainly enjoyable, but overall I'm not sold on this record.

Blind Gary Davis - Harlem Street Singer (1961)

Holy shit, a blues release that I'm not too big on! This is still good stuff though, Davis' guitar playing his nice and so is his voice, but this is just kinda a run of the mill bluesy gospel record. Every song sounds the same, and there just isn't that much emotion in this release, and that's basically the main reason why I listen to gospel and the blues. "Death Don't Have No Mercy" is obviously killer, though.

Ship Arriving to Late was just a short burst of Zappa mediocrity. Contains well-known “Valley Girl” and a little substance in the 14 minute jam, but nothing much here.
Lather was fucking rad. Sounds like the logical conclusion of post-70s pre-80s Zappa, a very underrated era. If you liked Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, and Zappa in New York, you may very well enjoy this.
Token of His Extreme was actually a very enjoyable recording of Zappa live on TV in 1974. If you like Roxy & Elsewhere and George Duke, this is for you.
Mystery Disc assumed I cared about where the “Willie the Pimp” title came from, and then gave a very boring story from someone completely unrelated to Zappa. A few never-heard tracks, but mostly a disappointment.
Tinseltown Rebelion is a Zappa album if it went to college: Fratty and annoying, but sometimes enjoyable and short bursts of spastic energy. Peaches III is a great rendition of Peaches En Regalia. Again, Zappa needs to shut the fuck up. The panty quilt thing was kind of funny, but I don’t understand if Zappa thinks these unfunny crowd-banter things are supposed to make me want to listen to it again. mac is the biggest wasted talent in indie nowadays. he's a phenomenal guitar player and he's certainly got an ear for a catchy melody, but he keeps making the same shit over again and relying on his aesthetic over his music cos that's what he's known for and what will sell.
that being said, 2 is a pretty solid album, salad days had a few good tracks but was mind-numbingly derivative, and another one was just all around lousy. I wanna see him try something new, he's got it in him.

It's a Serbian post-punk/new wave album. It's considered a classic over here but even here it's not too widely known for some reason. I don't know if some of you have already heard it, but anyways, it's a great album that I think needs some more recognition even outside the ex-Yugoslavian area.

>Spring Heel Jack - Disappeared
I'm not sure whether I like this record or it leaves me absolutely cold. Spring Heel Jack know what they're doing, creating drum and bass that focuses more on ambience than dance potential, but I wonder if the juxtaposition of crashing beats and ambient, oftentimes jazzy samples can really work. Unlike the works of ambient techno musicians, this type of "dance music", if you will, is too in-your-face to really work as ambient music. While a few tracks are more successful (the very jazzy "Disappeared 1 & 2", "Dying a Little"), the gross of this album can't satisfy me, even if I find certain moments pretty cool and very few mediocre. But then again, I might be seeing things incorrectly and I might love it after giving it more time. For now though, I would rather recommend their earlier, more subtle drum and bass material, or their later, full-on jazz records. 2.5+
>Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids
If you like Tin Drum, you'll like this album. In fact, I even dare to say I might like this one more than Tin Drum. Whereas that album has more oriental influences seeping through its music, this album differentiates itself from that one with funkier basslines and the occasional sax, as well as more long songs. "Methods of Dance" is basically the culmination of everything that's right about this album: fantastic bassline, a great variety of sounds being used to give the track an immense depth, addictive melodies, and some of the best sax work going on here. Some of the more ambient tracks, like the ominous "Burning Bridges", also work well. The only complaint I could bring up is that a couple of tracks on the second half of the album aren't quite up to par with the rest, but they're still fine enough to excuse them. In the end I feel like Japan's ability to utilize so many different kinds of sounds and still end up with a coherent pop album shows great skill, and moreover, it's just a lot of fun. 4.0

>Ghédalia Tazartès - Diasporas
Why does this album exist? Tazartès' voice makes no sense, he sounds like a lunatic who lived in a cave somewhere in a Middle Eastern desert and one day decided to leave it, move to Paris, and scream his lungs out because he didn't understand anything around him. Occasionally he sounds like that kind of warped vocal effect that appears on The Ape of Naples, like on the end of "I Don't Get It". The instrumentals, meanwhile, if they are there, are very minimal, droning, and eerie. Nurse With Wound comparisons might be apt (this guy's on the NWW list I believe, is it any wonder?). Still, these songs, if they can even be called songs, are very different from anything else, often just consisting of Tazartès' vocals and percussion samples, other vocal samples, always lo-fi, almost prehistoric, it just doesn't seem to fit within any sort of musical narrative. Giving points for the novelty is something I wouldn't do soon, but in this case, the novelty is so unique that I simply have to be impressed. 4.0-
>Akio Suzuki - Odds and Ends
I feel like for once, I found a music album that doesn't consist of music at all. Suzuki, on this 2-hour album (although it's really more of a compilation of archival material), expressively rejects anything bearing semblance to music. Indeed, this is 2 hours of sound experiments. Every track deals with one or two concepts: on one track, we get piano improvisation, on another we get Suzuki playing on a homemade echo instrument, some tracks sound like he's utilizing wind chimes, the final track is him playing some primitive flute, and more of that kind of stuff. The longest track on here consists mostly of a sample of a goat being pitched and stretched into drones. Suzuki is clearly not concerned with making something that is to be listened to and enjoyed, he's lost in his own world of finding sounds. Maybe this has philosophical potential, but as a record, this isn't terribly exciting. 2.0

Godspeed kinda evolved with this release, changing the position of the exclamation mark to prove it: this record doesn't feature any spoken word nor field recording, and the emotional variety of its predecessor is abandoned for a more constant melancholic sound. The free improvisation/noise/drone parts are also absent.
Both of these changes don't seem that important, but they actually play a crucial role in the final sound: the absence of "non-musical" bits means that this album is purely instrumental and, to have some variety and to don't become predictable, not every section builds to a crescendo.
The (relatively) static mood creates a big, heavy atmosphere, and it crawls under your skin, changing your mind as it goes on; it gives this record a lot of personality, preventing it to become "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Again".
The layering is very important: while new instruments are added, the sounds that were already playing change a little in the background. This technique is used almost always in this album, and despite the fact that Godspeed already used it before, it always makes the tracks flow smoothly and grow naturally; it never gets boring, it's always interesting to follow.
The production of Steve Albini makes all the instrument live and fuse together, but it also makes the compositions feel alive and intense; his work here is amazingly spot on.
Motherfucker = redeemer is my second favorite GY!BE song, just after "Storm".
Its strong rhythmic section is incredibly intense, and the little final crescendo may be predictable, but it still gives me goosebumps every time it makes this monolith end.
If you think Godspeed always do the same thing, the same "crescendocore" over and over again, then you haven't actually listened to them.

I'm doing american primitivism now. I'm determined to never finish a chart. I got a bunch of these albums from clutnuckle's excellent American Primitivism guide on rym. I'm still open to recs though.

A bunch of 5-min songs that kind of wander aimlessly. While that's not inherently a bad thing, something was off about this execution. I left the album feeling absolutely unmoved by any and all of the tracks. Might take another crack at it later, because River was so good.

>Olivier Messiaen - Quatuor pour la fin du temps (as performed by Gil Shaham / Paul Meyer / Jian Wang / Myung-whun Chung)
Written in a nazi POW camp, it's not difficult to see why Messiaen turned to religion and wrote this piece. It's an intense piece in eight movements, signalling the end of times, and considering the dire situation the world was in at the time, maybe Messiaen really did fear the end of times was nigh.
In any case, this chamber piece centers around piano, violin, cello, and clarinet. The clarinet is excellent on this piece, most notably on the third movement, which is a solo clarinet piece. It is not of grandiose intensity or virtue, but the slow tempo melody, played with a lot of long, fade-in notes, is nonetheless extremely suspenseful. This type of suspense is brought back several times. On the fifth movement, the cello takes a similar approach, but is quickly resolved by the piano, turning suspense into calm beauty. It sends shivers down my spine. The next movement, conversely, is very ominous, utilizing dissonance and a sometimes staccato rhythm to signal its doom. The movement that follows is a continuation of this mood, but with more hopeful elements sounding through in, for example, the fluid piano playing. Finally, the last movement returns to the purity of the fifth, absolutely gorgeous.
While the start might not be extremely captivating, I can safely say I liked all of this piece, and not only that, but most of it I loved. It hits home in all the right ways: picturesque, atmospheric, suspenseful, climatic, juxtaposing both the beautiful and the ugly without ever feeling forced or inconsistent. It is the suffering of a man during wartime and his turn to faith as a result, poured into musical form. 4.0+

I'm better at it than those who use strictly correct musical terminology. To what end is a review that conveys absolutely no message to the masses? By the by, I mostly write these things because I like to order my thoughts on an album. I might not use muh terminology, but the mere fact that I reminisce on what happened in the music forces me to listen to it closely and get a clearer picture of the piece as a whole.
