Martha Argerich - 24 Préludes
[1977]

24 dfferent intros that not only completely work as a stand-alone piece, but also have a sense of dynamics and movement that other singular works could only dream of. The idea of being capable of only seeing the first part of the picture, and imagining how they could develope is fascinating. Martha's playing helps conveying and enforcing the emotions and structure. 3.5

Eno's ambient series.

>Music for Airports
1/1 is absolutely gorgeous and one of the most soothing pieces of music I've ever heard. The lead melody is fucking out of this world and it's got just enough going for it to keep me interested (but not enough to truly demand the listener's attention).
The rest is pleasant at best and insanely repetitive.

>The Plateaux of Mirror
A less dry and repetitive take on the mellow parts of Music for Airports; features a lot of peaceful, manipulated piano playing and subtle field recordings. It's solid.

>Day of Radiance
The Reich-ish phased hammered dulcimer intro to the first track was really nice. Too bad it never fucking ended even though it wore out its welcome after 10 minutes. Some of the synths and manipulations on side two were a nice touch I guess.

>On Land
The most enjoyable album of the four; sports a more sombre atmosphere and places rather abstract sounding (but not quite synthetic?) instrumentation alongside eerie field recordings. It's by far the most dynamic record of the four but it doesn't compromise its ambient value; it's unintrusive while remaining interesting and somewhat varied.
>>
>>61884895
to be fair, 10 minutes to wear out is pretty good compared to most music.
>>
>>61884885
Which one are you talking about?
>>
>>61884945
yeah, it sounds really nice but that isn't really an excuse to cling to that one idea for 50 minutes with little to no variation.

>Louis Andriessen - De Staat
From what I get, with this piece Andriessen (Dutch composer woo) is making a statement against the idea that music can be given a value independent of iits context. I don't know exactly how that philosophy ties in with this piece of orchestral post-minimalism, but ok Louis. As a classical pleb, I find it hard to say much about this piece other than that I enjoyed it, but that I feel like minimalism for me works better when performed by a smaller ensemble, with more focus on droning repetition rather than the ever-moving structures found on this album. Its restlessness makes it fall flat as a minimalist piece for me, but there are other things about this to enjoy despite that (especially liking the parts with piano and oboes). I can see myself liking this even more once I figure out how to approach it and how to make sense of the supposed "meaning" of the piece. 3.0+

>Deathprod - Morals and Dogma
Considering he's a member of Supersilent, an improvisational quattro with a penchant for highly atmospheric pieces, it's no wonder Helge Sten has a knack for dark ambient music. What I find so good about this album in particular is how it manages to sound so organic despite the heavy usage of electronics on here. Rather than settling for clear electronic sounds, Sten's music uses a lot of "real" instruments processed with electronica to give them an extra murky, lo-fi sound. The centerpiece "Dead People's Things" is a standout, an 18-minute monster track that manages to not feel too long despite mostly consisting of some sort of whispery flute instrument holding the same few notes, a spooky electronic "melody", and an ominous female vox of sorts. "Cloudchamber" is also great, it sounds like an old machine disintegrating (Basinski can suck a dick). It's an extremely gloomy, almost depressing listen, and thus achieves what it sets out to do very well. 3.5
>>
>>61886363
>Bengt Berger - Bitter Funeral Beer
Bar the final track, which is a 22-minute jazz jam with African percussion, most of this album is surprisingly not very jazzy. The opening track has sax and trumpet, sure, but they seem to merely be there to keep the variation in what's otherwise a slow-paced xylophone piece with an abundance of samples of African singing going on. It's an unusual piece to say the least. The middle is formed by energetic, minimalist African percussion pieces, repetitive sax patterns, little trumpet solos, and combinations of those things. So basically, if Steve Reich conducting a jazz band in Africa sounds good to you, check it out. 3.5-

>Columbia Symphony Orchestra / New York Philharmonic / Leonard Bernstein - Rhapsody in Blue/An American in Paris
There is a certain brand of music, the kind of uber-symphonic, picturesque classical music that I would like to call "Disney classical." You know what I mean, the kind of thing you hear in earlier Disney movies, where the sounds usually are paired with actions that fit with these sounds (you see a busy street and the music gets very busy with many instruments playing simultaneously, a fat man walks by slowly and a tuba plays some silly notes, a couple walks in a garden and the music gets soft with flutes and violins playing, that kind of shit). Well, basically, this music is exactly that. Picturesque music can work very well, but in this case, I just feel like this music wasn't at all made to be listened to independently of some sort of companion piece. I really do feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack of some Disney picture, especially on An American in Paris. I can understand why people would listen to this, and in fact, I don't find this a bad listen or anything, but as opposed to the music of all-time greats like Bach, Beethoven, et cetera, Gershwin's music feels too cheap, too commercial. Pleasant after all with some fine moments, but overall not really what I was hoping for. 2.0+
>>
>>61885777

Th-thanks. I would like to know more about your opinion on De Staat, why you love it so much. I certainly liked it, but I feel like getting more perspective on it would really help in bumping it up to a 3.5, ya feel? And yeah, Gershwin wasn't terrible but glorified Disney music is neither what I expected nor what I wanted.

I'm making tomato soup for dinner, here's the recipe I came up with:

2 cans of crushed tomatoes
1 whole yellow onion
3 medium garlic cloves
2 dried medium heat chili
2 beef bullion cubes

Mix garlic and onion in a blender together with 4dl of water. Crush the chili. Put everything into a fucking pot. Boil that shit. Serve with fresh memes.

What do you think? I probably should've gotten some fresh spices to go with it; oregano would've been nice, but I didn't have any at home.
>>
>>61886613
isn't this the tomato soup recipe everyone knows except for the chili? Still nice and cheap, though.
Also how's the psychology? Any further with getting into medical school?
>>
>>61886613
Seems alright (although not very special), dunno if the amounts right but I trust they are. I personally like my soup to be a little more stuffed though, you could make some meatballs from mince if you have it (a Swede who doesn't make meatballs when the opportunity arises, is a disgrace).
>>
>>61886673
Idk man, I never made tomato soup before but figured this is what ought to be in one. Turned out good, but a bit oniony.

Psych is fun and well, finally done with the massive course in perception, cognition, emotion and learning. Now... social psych. Not quite as fun. Not getting into med school this spring, got worse results than last time. Maybe next year.

Little Fyodor - Dance Of The Salted Slug (1994)

Sounding maybe like a low-budget, hyped-up David Byrne, these are rudimentary and repetitive post-punk pop songs dealing -- in a flippant way -- with subjects of depression and madness. Compelling and repellent in turns, this is a curious obscurity, with enough odd ideas to suggest it might be a grower. "Watching The Squirrels" is my pick.

The Gorge Trio - Dead Chicken Fear No Knife (1998)

I picked this up as the result of a search for something else, because I liked the album name. Unexpectedly an instrumental album. Calls Trans Am to mind in its more structured moments (In The Midst Of A Thrill; Five Against Four). Mostly though, things are looser and noisier. Guitars everywhere, and I'd have appreciated a bit more varied instrumentation, but there we are. I might give it another listen, but I don't think it'll make much more of an impression on me.

>>
>>61886890
>>61886909
holy fucking kek why would it be called mustard soup otherwise. But basically, I prefer it without bacon though.
>>
>>61886556
it's a very funny piece for me. I fundamentally agree with his (and plato's) claim that music is both a product and a producer of social relations, yet his music seems to pull the rug from under itself with its ancient greek text and almost random organisation and ideas, stated so boldly and loudly. this illustrates how obscure the relationship between music and society often is - something we have to just live with, and take a leap of faith when we state our belief in it. of course there are other points to be made - the totally weird (for 1970s) instrumentation and relentless rhythm for example - but these feed back into self-criticisms: why has he done this, why do I like it, and what does it mean that I like it so much?

>>61886613
might want a little sugar to cut the acidity out
>>
>>61886914
doesn't ikea have them in a creamy type sauce?
Also, have you tried the soups at the refter? they're really good and taste quite fresh, different ones everyday, too
>>
>>61886914
IKEA doesn't do meatballs in tomato sauce here. You get meatballs in BROWN SAUCE with lingonberries. That's how the Swede do.

>>61886922
Yeah I'll probs cut the meat out too if I try it. Then it seems fairly close to potato and leek soup, so yah.

>>61886926
Definitely a good idea. I'll add sugar to the leftovers.

Planning what to get for my travelling. The new Savages is finally available in 320, hype (although it is probably shit).

I am also planning to be the first person to record a harsh noise album in Tajikistan using samples of Shrek bootleg DVDs in the local languages, where the translations are actually protestant church propaganda. Bet no one ever did that.
>>
>>61892664
If you're gonna do that, might as well set up a one-person "band" to say you "formed" there, the tajiki section on me RYM music map is pretty slim-to-zero.

Actually, I just remembered I got an Indian harmonium there. Hopefully me and my family will be able to organize a nice jam session.

Also you can totally claim all my albums are done by a project formed there. I wrote some of the first tracks back home.

>Howes - 3.5 Degrees
Very basic midtempo bleepy bloopy stuff. There's actually very little to grab the attention or even engineer a dance here, but given the unassuming simplicity and satisfying drone-rhythm-drone arc this is a decent first go from a young and inexperienced producer.

>The High Llamas - Buzzle Bee
>indie pop

As far as indie rock goes, this is sickly sweet. Like the idea of making this recorded is taking indie pop and making it child friendly as possible. Unchallenged, friendly, simple, and as many use of the phrase "la" as you can possibly fit in. The music itself is not bad, its just really not for me or for anyone else outside of the early 2000's.

Unfortunately no. And that's kind of exactly what I was looking for, so I was a bit miffed. Well, actually, depends. How intimate with the Fahey discog are you? From an entry perspective, there are a few albums, but none really transcend the way FFV does.

Here's what I've done today.

Zoot Allures had nothing much redeemable except for the title track. Zappa really started to dumb down what made the original few Mothers' lineup so special at this point and was making some really generic jazz rock.

Halloween was a painfully mediocre listen, but it has a great rendition of Black Napkins. Apparently this was one of FZ's best performances, but whoever mastered this CD only chose to put on the parts that had all the hits. Shame. Also, Zappa sounds worn out and tired. Oh, and Dancin' Fool is a shit song no matter how many times its thrown at me. The more I listen to these posthumous albums the more I start to hate the Zappa Family Trust honestly.

Wazoo was a surprising listen actually. If Zappa would shut the fuck up on some of these live performances (there's literally a three minute track on this) this could be a shiner. If you like Greggery Peccary or the album streak between Waka/Jawaka and One Size Fits All, give this a listen.

Oh, and the Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar albums were a snore. Even more so than the "Guitar" albums, but the second one was slightly better.

It seems to me these are just a shit ton of live performances, compilations, and the same 20 songs put in different albums.

I have made a terrible mistake.

After sidestepping through Bowie's discography and the new Future mixtape, I returned to finish up this chart

Sean McCann - Ten Impressions for Piano & Strings
Very relaxing, very good. Didn't feel compelled to get more of his stuff but should I come across a new release by him I'll probably check it out

Jonghyun (종현) - BASE
KPop. This was clearly designed with more crossover appeal in mind as two or three tracks are predominantly in English and have a more R&B-focused sound. Good but not great

STL - Dubs Etched Into Relief
I remember thinking some of the stuff here had really great, deep bass but unfortunately this is something that I no longer remember much about since I heard it two to three weeks ago

Demdike Stare - Testpressing#007
Another one I don't remember too much about other than that it sounded a little more cold and raw compared to the first two Testpressings

Hong Kong Express - HK
Was very surprised by how enjoyable I found this for Vaporwave. Very pleasant.

Ellis Marsalis - Whistle Stop
Excellent jazz. Went back and grabbed more from the artist. Definitely recommend it if you can find a download/seeder.

Flying Saucer Attack - Instrumentals 2015
Very much rough drafts. A few stood out, with I think 14 or 15 in particular being strong, but otherwise they were just drafts.

White Poppy - Natural Phenomena
Don't remember :(
I do now remember though that I was also sick when I heard the past 10 or so

Ryley Walker - Primrose Green
This is the kind of country-twinged voice I cannot fucking stand. Did not like at all.
>>
>>61898133
God, rereading this, it sounds like I was having a stroke writing this.

First, it's "Guitar" album (no plural).

Second, the three minute track is of him just talking.

I'm sure there's more grammatical stuff, I'm just really burnt out tonight.

Kamasi Washington - The Epic
This was actually very good. Dunno if ''hype was real'' but I can see why the hype was there. Will be keeping an ear out for more by him for sure in the future; very promising.

Jake Xerxes Fussell - Jake Xerxes Fussell
Or maybe this was the country voice I hated? Really do not remember at this point

Stereolab - Switched On
So good! Wish Steolab had been more discussed in the past so I could have listened to them sooner. Will work through their discography this year.

Lilys - In the Presence of Nothing
I forget who but someone said they were basically MBV ripoffs but I didn't hear it. Dense but more focused shoegaze than Kevin Shields was making at the time.

Linda Smith - Till Another Time
Pop-leaning shoegaze. Was only an EP but three distinct sounds approaches on each of the songs that worked pretty well aside from the short closer.

Various Artists - DFA Compilation #1
I'd heard most of these tracks before but these sounded like their rough original versions which was cool to hear; more leaning on the punk in dance-punk.

Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
Actually pretty good. I can see why people liked it a lot but not why they championed it.

Natalie Prass - Natalie Prass
Fuck this was so good why did I wait so long to listen? /daily/ you should have sold this to me much harder

Joanne Robertson - Black Moon Days
Still listening to this one but so far its echo-laden, somewhat dreamy folk. Pleasant and good arrangements.

Kaoru Todoroki - Uncle Calvin's Private Life

You may or may not recognize the name Kaoru Todoroki, he was one of the members of Picky Picnic which was a band whose album "Picnic Land" was recommended to me a while ago here (evidently Picnic Land is one of my 9s on this chart). Uncle Calvin has a very similar vibe to it, what with the whole low-fi, cutesy, experimental zolo rock stuff. Another similarity I found was that many of the tracks relied on repetition of musical phrases to a somewhat hypnotic effect (MBV-like, not Swans-like). This is especially prevalent on the track Yasasikkutte, a track that has become one of my current favorite tracks this week. On the other side of things, one major difference between Uncle Calvin and Picnic Land is that Uncle Calvin finds itself a lot deeper into the cute vocals/melodies/compositions than Picnic did; this is likely because Kaoru may have been the member who brought that stuff to the table whereas the other member (whoever they are) maybe brought the more serious side of things (not that Picky Picnic could be considered by any means serious) but anyway it was certainly interesting to hear these sounds heading in a more focused direction. That being said, I didn't quite enjoy this album as much as I did Picky Picnic's album. Some of the tracks were cutesy to the point that they became somewhat irritating and redundant. Overall still a pretty good album, nothing special or elevating but it was definitely fun and I would think that anyone who enjoyed Picky Picnic would enjoy this album as well. 7/10

Man Is the Bastard - Thoughtless (1995)
>powerviolence, noise

Its all about "Moloch", honestly. That's the best piece of powerviolence I've ever heard, and if it alone was released as a single or an EP it'd probably be among my favorite punk releases ever. Problem is there's still 20 minutes left of oddly flaccid but still kinda sorta noisy powerviolence. Would benefit if it just dived into the deep end of noise and power electronics, but it just stays in its boring powerviolence safe zone. "Moloch" though, hnng.

fuckin christ, that was just a test cos i kept getting the duplicate file error.

Rat at Rat R - Amer$ide - Rock & Roll Is Dead Long Live - Rat at Rat R (1985)
>noise rock, post-punk

A bit of a bottom-heavy album, innit? The last couple of tracks are really dirty, disgusting, scuzzy punk blues tracks that sound like Scratch Acid mating with John Lee Hooker, and they're pretty spectacular. But the other, earlier tracks are just kinda generic noisy post-punk in the vein of Killing Joke, and I can't get too into those. Solid record overall though.

2.5-

The The - Soul Mining (1983)
>new wave, art pop

Wow, this is kinda the shit. A bit of an odd record by new wave standards, cos its not herky-jerky or anxious at all, its very spacious and chilled out, with a lot of influence from African percussion. Granted, the African percussion really does sound like a bunch of British white dudes imitating African percussion, a la Graceland, but it still adds a nice layer to the music, especially on "Giant". A few duds here though, specifically the unmemorable "The Twilight Hour", but save for the stalwarts of the genre (Devo, Talking Heads, Soft Cell), I don't think new wave gets much better than this.

well that's what happens when you restrict the dumb thing to under 20 minutes and not the more realistic 25 or 30.

D.R. Hooker - The Truth (1972)
>psychedelic rock

I spent my day off yesterday downloading a shit ton of private press records from this list (https://rateyourmusic.com/list/yerblues/notable_private_press_albums/), so like expect a lot of those on this freeform chart. And this is really shockingly good for such a cheaply recorded album with such a phenomenally awful cover. It sounds like its produced very competently, and the psych jams on this thing are second to none. A bit cheesy and I'm fairly certain its a bit Pat Boone, AM radio heavy-handed Christian, but that doesn't detract from the jams all that much. And its a bit schmaltzy in some places, but as a whole its a pretty darn good record.

Hey memes, wish I could meme here more regularly, but school, work, etc.
Been getting into hipster metal lately. Listened to Amplifier Worship, Aesthetica, and Deafheaven's first album, all of which were p good. Aesthetica made me angrier that The Ark Work didn't live up to the vision that the band had for it. Maybe I'll get over the cheap midi instrumentation and start to like it though. It definitely had some cool ideas, but the way it was executed bothered me so much. Who knows.

I'm also trying to get into classical again. I've just sort of come to terms with the fact that I'm probably not going to enjoy pre-1900s classical music unless I start listening to more recent stuff, so today I tried Boulez performing Berio's Sinfonia and I liked that a lot.

There's supposed to be a blizzard here on friday, so hopefully I can finish my 2015 charts then.

EPs can and should be more than sketches of songs though
one of my favorite releases of all time is a 12-minute EP

The obvious choice would be to have a Big Trouble in Little China/The Warriors double-feature.

The Master is dope tho
>>
>>61901089
Only one of those I've seen is The Master. Really liked it, but be warned that the plot is very ambley/directionless.
>>
>>61901089
If you want something like There Will Be Blood, then The Master

If you want something musical and Beefheart-esque, watch Frank

If you hate yourself, watch Human Centipede 3

If you want the best thing on that list by far, then It's Such a Beautiful Day. It's only like an hour too.

Do The Fall have more stuff in this vein? Is it just on Perverted? I'm hesitant to find out myself because I wasn't a big fan of Live at Witch Trials

>>61901089
ive seen beautiful day, frank, worlds greatest dad, big trouble in little china, snowpiercer, and troll hunter.
Big Trouble in Little China is the best. only one of those listed i've re-visited, and I want to own it.

Are you me? Those are exactly the only ones I've seen of that list too. I'd rec It's Such a Beautiful Day over Big Trouble in Little China tho.

>>61901089
If you're watching a movie w/ friends, especially movie fan friends, Big Trouble will be hilarious. If you watch it alone, it's still pretty great, but I'd rec Beautiful Day over it. Also would highly rec Frank, which has one of my favorite endings of any movie.

>>61902512
Yeah just find Robin Pecknold at Columbia and tell him college is for nerds, then hopefully he'll write some more music
>>
>>61902628
You should, its great too.

BTW, in It's Such a Beautiful Day, I still haven't been able to identify the song playing at around 17 minutes in, when Bill is sitting on the bus watching the rain

pls help it sounds so nice

Field of Reeds (2013) by These New Puritans, recommended by moonjacques

First thing I did when this album ended: go back to the start and listen again. Normally that'd be an unequivocal praise, but actually I just needed to do a double-take. It turns out I was right. Field of Reeds has possibly one of the most beautiful openings of any album I've ever laid ears upon. 'This Guy's in Love with You' is a sad and shy overture that ripples with promises of the show about to unfold: sparse piano chords with awkwardly pretty voicing, reverberations like echoes of sunlight, restrained and empathic brass arrangements, and a crush's candid singing caught unawares on a mobile phone... The whole thing aches.

So why the double-take? Simple: the rest of this record is so dull, so clumsy, and so frustrating that it's almost incomprehensible how such quality and such toss could sit next to each other. I'm not sure how they managed it. Everything promised by 'This Guy' is not only denied, but by the fifteenth minute is being transformed into an ugly parody of what came before. To that end this is one of the most infuriating listens I've ever had. It took serious willpower from second to second to get through the last 25 minutes.

Take the arrangements. You could compare the form of these perhaps to Talk Talk (jazz) or to Bjork (brass), neither of which would be unflattering. So how come they turn out to be one of the most embarrassing parts? In several places ('Organ Eternal', all of the choral parts, and the closer especially) I could seriously speculate whether they were written by a GCSE student. Even worse is how tight and suffocated they feel: Bjork and Talk Talk are exemplary in giving their ensembles freedom to play loose and let themselves go, even though they're doing very different things. It's hard to believe, on the other hand, that some of these instruments aren't digitally synthesised. I suspect they were written by the band with a sequencer, who then got so used to the sound that by the musicians arrived that's exactly what they wanted to get. Well done guys. And another thing. There's a case to be made for using the studio and production 'as an instrument', as Eno would have it, but this only takes you so far. An almost unbroken twelve minutes of instrumental fuckwittery for its own sake is doing nobody any favours without a front which it can accompany.

For their part, the band often seem to lack any sentience or awareness as to where they are. Sometimes I wonder if they're attempting some kind of negative musicianship. 'V (Island Song)' is one of the tracks that stands a chance of redemption, despite its length. It's a solid, dark, groove, or at least it would be if somebody would just drive a screwdriver into the drummer's forehead. Stop trying to compensate for being outnumbered multiple times over by all the session musicians and play some fucking sparse 4/4 you mong. The singer is not any more enlightened, using his mumbles without any semblance of dynamic or consciousness. Don't get me wrong, I am a big big fan of the mumbling male singer. But the male mumble is itself a performance; something which the Puritans seem not to be aware of.

I could go on, I really could. But I won't. Because the very worse thing about all this is that that opening is so gorgeous, so many worlds apart, that I still want to hold on and hope for something more. And I fucking hate that.

Frank is good if you skip the first half of the film, and only start watching when they jam in the cabin playing "Secure the galactic perimeter" or what'sitcalled. Troll Hunter is hilarious. Snowpiercer is both seriously bad and seriously pretty decent at the same time. The Master is a waste of time. Human Memepede is funny.
