Asked in the earlier thread, I'll ask again: when compared to the more simpleIbanez models that run between 150 and 200 dollars, is the JEM JR worth the extra couple hundred dollars or am I better off getting something cheaper? I'm looking to upgrade from an old beat-up Squier Strat and I'm wondering if the difference in quality is worth the 400 I'd be putting towards the JEM. I've heard a few demos of it and it sounds killer, but I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it for reference.

eAcoustic bass is a second bass to own, imho. Straight electric gets you taken seriously by the people you will be jamming with. Also good for silent late-night practice sessions.

Is there a difference in stability between a thick neck and a thin neck?
>>
I'm getting my first bass (played guitar for a few years now) and I wanted to know if I should straight up buy it online or go to a GC and try out some basses and feel it out. Since I have no experience with basses I don't think my judgement would be good enough, but I could do it regardless, besides sounds, what should I look for in a precision bass? The general stuff you would look for in a guitar? Something else? Or just go online?
>>
>>61860231
Personally, I would never buy an instrument without playing it unless the deal was amazing.

You're paying for all of these things when you're buying it. Do you need them? I'm not saying this is a bad guitar, but if you're looking for the best bang for your buck, that might not be it
>>
>>61860061
People around here always say to go cheap on the axe and spend the difference on amps and effects. I say, once you've played a quality axe, you won't want to take that step back down.

At $150-200 you're still in Squire territory... No point spending the money for more of the same, imo. At $400-500 used, you're likely getting a quality instrument. Same price new, I'm not so sure.

Real experience with the Jem Jr.? Sorry, none.
>>
>>61860061
Are you really into that inlay/grip?
You can get a much better second hand MIJ for a bit more.

The JEM Jr is pretty much a RG350 with some extra cosmetics.
>>
>>61860355
I've heard how it plays and honestly, those things are just cherries on top. The Vai trem bar is a nice touch I'm interested in getting the hand of again, too.

>>61860443
>At $150-200 you're still in Squire territory... No point spending the money for more of the same, imo. At $400-500 used, you're likely getting a quality instrument.

See, this is the general impression I got and I told myself something similar but wasn't sure. I was thinking "Well, if I get the cheaper Ibanez and I discover I've bought something that plays no different than my Strat then I'm gonna be kicking myself over not getting a real upgrade." I wasn't sure if that was a correct way of thinking, but I'm happy you've confirmed that for me. I've seen enough of the demos and reviews to observe that it has the sound I want. Thanks, guys, I'll shop around at my local guitar shop before committing but I'm strongly considering the JEM now.
>>
>>61860458
I'm in love with inlay, and the grip looks like something that'll really grow on me. Plus, this may sound superficial, but I like the idea of going on stage with that; I'm in a band that's set to play a shit ton of shows this year and I think that'll really add to our aesthetic. Idk, just me though.
>>
>>61860180
Not really, most thin necks are reinforced, and all necks, w/exception of most classicals, have steel truss rods. I've not seen too many on quality instruments go bad, it does happen, but it's usually a bad piece of lumber or neglect on it's owners part(storage, humidity, ect.).

just listen to classic rock radio for a day and pick songs you like. Though to be honest there's a ton to pull from and you don't have to choose something everybody knows. Just remember playing classic rock is almost completely about having fun, just like playing jimmy buffet it should be as relaxed as possible. Try to get people to sing along as much as you can. You have decades of music to choose from.

the big ones that people like are - the beatles, the rolling stones, led zeppelin, ac/dc, jimi hendrix

so learn some of their songs. people will probably be impressed if you can nail some zeppelin songs. they're not very difficult for guitar, but you need to find a drummer who can nail bonham's stuff, that's the hard stuff for zeppelin

What determines the string spacing on most guitars? I mean both my guitars have the same diameter, but their string spacing difference is huge.

Which guitars normally have huge string spacings? It's so good for chordal playing.
>>
>>61862109
the nut and the bridge
>>
>>61862109
8 strings usually have a bigger string spacing.
>>
>>61862180
>>61862146

Do strats normally have larger spacings? I want a 6 string. My Ibanez with its Ibanez Edge is just nice, could be slightly wider though.
>>
>>61860061

I'd just go for an RG3550 or 550. but in general, yeah, you want to spend that extra money. the difference between a 150-200$ guitar and a 4-500$ guitar is like the difference between a 500$ guitar and a 1200$guitar
>>
>>61860061

>>
>>61862198

>>
>>61862109
The shred guitars generally have wider necks with more space between the strings, if that helps.
>>
>>61862298

Man maybe I should buy a Strat. But fuck 1299.. That's gotta wait a few years.

I reckon the small radius would make it sweet for chordal works.
>>
>>61862198
mos guitars will list the string spacing or at least the nut width. Go by the numbers and compare to your own nut. Some manufacturers will offer the same guitar with different width options.
>>
>>61862340
But they also have flat fretboard, I want something curvy to do easier barre chords.
>>
>>61862386
your best bet is to get a guitar with a 12" radius. it seems to be the best of both worlds, curvy enough to be comfortable for chords, flat enough for solo single line stuff.
>>
>>61862346
Don't Gibson/Gretsch have an even smaller radius ? Or is it just because the neck is bigger ?
>>
>>61862346
just get an off brand, there's like a hundred that make strats with the same radius.
>inb4 rondo shill

Depends on for how much they're selling it. But MIJ fender stuff is pretty good. Streets ahead on any $100 guitar.
>>
So I'm probably gonna buy pic related to sit on top of my amp always on. I want to get a nice SVT tone but the amp I have now is a 80's Ampeg B2 and it is pretty lifeless. It has good frequency response but the boosts tend to introduce noise, especially with the horn in my 4x10 on. I was considering a digital solution but I sort of realized I would never use 90% of the effects from a unit. I found some good mods for the BDI21 to bypass the built in notch filter and bandpass, so I hopefully won't have to turn it off and screw with my EQ between songs too much. I know it's kinda stupid to void the warranty of such a cheap pedal($30) with mods, but the pedal looks really easy to repair. For guitar I wouldn't really consider analog as I know I'd just get more and more pedals.

The advantage is that you can get smoother textures by eliminating the pick scrape when doing eco picking.

>>
>>61865671
Not really. If you are shredding I can imagine it, and economy tends to work well for a sudden fast arpeggio, but I dunno if you can even call that economy picking. If you can play arpeggios with an even rhythm you're good to go.

Has anyone memorized all the natural and harmonic modes in all keys by heart? I'm somewhere in the middle of this process and it's been much less overwhelming than I thought.

I imagine improvisation must be cool when you can combine different modes and the various different feelings they evoke together on the fly.
>>
>>61866576
Honestly I don't believe in bass distortion without a blend knob. You totally lose the bottom end when you distort. That being said it's totally fine if the song takes the loss of the bass role into account. Does your amp have a way to blend fx with clean? uh it's always inevitably going to be a little of both. In any improvisation (even the most out there free jazz) you're going to recall patterns that have already been written.
>>
>>61866750
Multiband distortion will work wonders if you want to avoid distorting the fundamental frequencies while making the rest of the spectrum crunchier.
>>
>>61866750
The distortion channel of the BC-1 has a blend with the clean channel, and the HM-2 is in a parallel FX loop of the BC-1. Bass = Retained.

the reverse occurred. i tried to get into jazz as a drummer and a guitarist as they are all technically good, however, the music is so horrendous and boring i just can't take it. i would almost rather listen to buckethead run through his latest scale noodling.

i find much more value in old blues , tho not as technically proficient in many ways - is so much better. listening to someone like skip james or john lee hooker from their early days is amazing how well it holds up.

lightening fast scales and key changes of jazz could not be more boring. its like watching the movie whiplash , they all are grotesquely proficient but musically i couldnt care less

I see. While key and scale hopping are a big part of the appeal of jazz, I have to agree that there's a rather common tendency among jazz artists to over-develop those two to a point where, instead of contributing to the overall tonal richness the whole ordeal becomes not more than a circle jerk about who can noodle the fastest and change keys the most.

What's the point of variation if the listener isn't given enough time to emotionally react to it?
>>
>>61867379
i will say this about jazz though - live jazz can be pretty awesome when done well, but somehow loses all flavor recorded.

maybe its the crispness of the drums and sound of a standing acoustic bass or something live that is good.

also, i'll never be as fast as those guys any way

Well it's not like the principles vary from source to source. Music notation is really simple stuff to grasp, the hard part is memorizing and becoming fast at creating the association between the right notes and correct piano keys or guitar frets, and that's something you become good at only with constant practice.

Which would you go with given these choices?

Orange CRUSH12 12W
Orange Crush Pix CR12L 12W
Orange Crush 20 W
Marshall MB15 15 W
Marshall MG10CD 10 W
Ibanez IBZ-10 10 W
Line 6 Spider IV 15 W
Fender Mustang 20 W

also updating on my purchase. That Razorback through an MS-2 sounds incredible. I can get tones from J. Mascis to Slash and even heavy Pantera and Death riffs. Very crunchy, best fucking get ever.

don't get too caught up on cabs, man. If you have a graphic EQ you really only need to worry about features and specs. Try looking at what's going used near you and looking up the specs of those cabs. Frequency response, wattage rating and resistance are the big ones to keep in mind. Pretty much the only thing you need to watch out for you can't get from the manufacturer's website is durability.

This is the only one I've played but it's a reap champ. Does pretty much everything and you just gotta love the EQ scheme. One knob, contour. Assuming you have a tone knob on your guitar you can get so many tones you won't believe it. This amp is so fucking great, seriously. Not to mention the cleanest clean in the biz. Not one of those goddamn tubey cleans. The overdrive channel goes from the most subtle dirt to full out metal. It doesn't strip your harmonics until you really crank it. The thing is loud and usable as a bass amp, albeit not a 5 string.

tldr; buy it it's like $20 used

Guys I think we should change these threads to Musician General

I think that way it wouldn't always be the same 3 people wanking over gear. Plus, musicians all have a lot to learn from each other.

Can anyone get behind this?
>>
>>61871189
no pls
Seriously no man, we would get shitposters like the keyboard pleb.
>>
>>61871189
been put forward before
only reason stuff devolves into gear wankery is that gear is objective most of the time and music creation is not. it's a harder topic to talk about and requires more vocabulary to accurately get across a point or idea.
every attempt in the past to re-engineer the general has resulted in fracturing what we have and causing turmoil for a few threads.
>>
>>61871258

but mate, other than more gear posts, there are literally no downsides to having more musicians in here discussing music. I think it add a lot more discussion about actual music, songwriting, etc, and not just gear gear gear
>>
>>61871189
>>61871311
Idea was put forward months ago. This is a guitar thread. If you want a thread for x instrument or y discussion go make a general for it. There's literally zero reason to change this thread to fit what you want.
>>
>>61871277
dang, thats sad dude :/
>>
>>61871387
okay, if thats how you all feel than I'll drop it. I just figured that since these threads are notoriously horrible, y'all might want to make an effort to make them at least halfway decent

why have several tiny shitty threads for every instrument in the book when you could have one big thread where everyone talks about making music?
I'm a guitarist btw, so I'm not just trying to change it up because I feel excluded
>>
>>61871189
no fuck off
>>
>>61871469
these threads go from shit to good, sure the ratio isn't 1:1, but we do have good threads, and even if a thread is bad on the whole, discussion in it can still be decent in pockets.
Like it or not this thread is what we make it. if you wanna see discussion about music and influences and so on, you have to start it, encourage it, make sure it's valid to people here.
>>
>>61871469
>I just figured that since these threads are notoriously horrible
Only during this time. They're great threads off-peak, the shit posting dies right down.

>why have several tiny shitty threads for every instrument in the book when you could have one big thread where everyone talks about making music?
Because /gg/ bump limits several times a day anyway. You ever used /dbt/ over on /o/? It moves to fast now that discussion has pretty much evaporated and the threads are borderline useless.

You'll turn /gg/ into a shit posting hole that bump limits in two hours.

This too >>61871530. There have been plenty of great threads, trying to change the threads because you only visit during shitpost o clock isn't our problem.

>if you wanna see discussion about music and influences and so on, you have to start it, encourage it, make sure it's valid to people here.
Truer words couldn't have been spoken. If you want that sort of discussion make it. Inviting in an army of new shit posters and irrelevant content will just turn the threads to perpetual shit like several other generals on this site.

Alright my rant is over. Hope you can see why we keep it /gg/.

>>
goddamn i think i'm retarded, i need help. so i got the amp that i ordered (hot rod deluxe iii) and the tubes came separately.

i watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuJaCVldFq0
which shows how to replace the tubes on the same exact amp i have. the first two he puts in went pretty easily for me, but the last 3 pre-amp tubes just will not go in the slots they're supposed to go in. i line them up and try to wiggle them in and they just won't go in/stay.

so i put them in as best as i could, they were a bit loose, and turned on the amp. it played great for like 10 seconds, then i heard a sort of pop, and then i couldn't hear anything out of the amp.

what am i doing wrong? why won't the tubes go in like it shows in the video? none of the prongs seem too bent either

Anyways you could attempt to adjust the action and if maybe you are lucky you could adjust the truss rod but I doubt it on acoustics. warping usually comes from string tension so make sure you have the right strings on it.

There's a key in the center of the big octal power tubes to make sure they fall into the socket correctly.

The preamp tubes are mini 9 pins. There is a gap between pins 1 and 9 to orient the tube with the socket. Take a look at the socket before ramming these in and bending the pins.

The pop sound could be lots of things. If you have no sound at all, you've likely smoked a fuse.

someone might be able to get it here :
http://pmpdf.teatro-verde.eu/chords-and-progressions-for-jazz-and-popular-arnie-berle-87447896.pdf

otherwise i only have the hard version

i think it is lightweight enough: this is great introductory to learn theory as it relates to chords and scales, later does inversions, comping and then goes to advanced things later in the book,

i fixed it, i wasn't ramming them in but i guess i wasn't pushing them in hard enough. i obviously lined them up before just shoving them in

Raising the action will make it harder to play and won't really solve the problem
Check the curve on your neck, it needs to be straight or slightly curved. If the neck is very curved or worst, back-bowed, you need to adjust the truss-rod if you have one.
If you don't, well, not many options. You can try upping or dropping the tuning but that's pretty much it.

aight, I had a feeling it was that but I didn't want you to get glass and blood all over the damn amp :3
>>

It's all good. When you work with these enough they can trick you when going by feel. It's pretty easy to kill a tube straightening the pins back out.

everything I can check with a multimeter including the bridge is grounded. I have hum cancelling pickups. There's still buzz(not him) when I'm not touching the strings. what the fuck? I thought I would only get hum that didn't change from contact with the strings if everything is wired right?

I have a digirtech bad monkey I run my bass through and honestly I believe it's better for bass than it is for guitar because you have the high and low knobs which help you blend in more lower end when you need it.

i use one with my SVT350 i'm building a thing for the back of the amp to mount it and run it through the preamp in the back.
