I ended up using the materials at hand. A venti-sized Starbucks straw both cut to length and folded inward before being pushed into each of my tremolo springs. I measured on a closed spring so shorter than expected. Fucking perfect result, though! No more sproing.

Got her gutted today, going to order some GFS Power Rails tomorrow morning.

There's one fret that needs filing. Other than that, I'm probably going to do a refinish. A guy in the last thread suggested getting a Bigsby and also stripping the finish, burning the wood, and putting a clear coat on. Probably going to get the Bigsby, but I'm pretty sure the body wood is ugly as hell so I'm weary about stripping the current paint off

Fret scalloping sounds fun as well. My dad would probably like to try that out with me
>>
>>61571658
I wouldn't strip the wood and put a clear coat, in fact i wouldn't refinish at all, I don't think you'd like what you see under the paint. it wouldn't be pretty wood under there.
>>
>>61571700
lol i didnt read your whole post sorry>>61571658
>>
>>61571700
If I did take the paint off, I would burn the wood before doing a clear coat so it looked all charred and shit
>>
>>61571617
Bullet Strats are notoriously dodgy, look for used higher end Fender/Squier stuff and you'll get a better deal
>>
>>61571658
you might have difficult time with a bigsby due to the carved top, make sure you get one that fits. I imagine there are several mays to get around this. You should put VCC controls in mang. series parallel fade is really nice, especially since your getting such warm pickups. You might want to be able to thin out the tone somewhat. A lot of times people want more bass until they get it.
>>
>>61571725
I would look up if anyone else has done this. I can imagine a few technical problems, since to get a charred look you'd have to pretty heavily damage the smoothness of the wood. It could also make sanding and cleaning the wood before finishing difficult. I wouldn't want to be a pioneer in this area.
>>
>>61571617
That's a very cool color scheme, but for that price I don't think you can do a whole lot worse than that on a strat style guitar. I'd look for reviews of other budget brands online of I were you, especially video reviews. Amazon and such are really poor sources for reviews. You want more pro reviews than just customer reviews.
>>
I dunno if this is the right place to ask but, what the hell do I do with my bass? I picked it up and played it for the first time in a few weeks and I dunno what to do with it, I can't afford further lessons currently, I don't understand sheet music enough to continue in my book, all that happens every time I pick up this bass is I practice the boogie woogie for hours because it's the only thing I give a shit about playing and really love playing, what do I do to improve right now?

Messing around with tones again today. If I wanted to thicken up the rhythm guitar with reverb where would I want to put it in the signal chain and what sort/how much reverb should I go for?

https://clyp.it/2bdcoxlp
>>
tl;dr how can I tell if my bass amp/speaker is fried?

So I bought an AB/Y pedal online that turned out to have ground loop problems, and it produced an incredibly loud squeak/hiss/whine while at a volume level that during normal playing should only be as loud as a conversation.
Startled as fuck, I quickly turn off and remove the pedal from my chain, and then turn my amp back on to assess damage.
I haven't played at performance level volume yet, but everything seems fine, except when I have a specific config of my other pedals that muffles the tone (similar to volume clipping).
My amp has a tube preamp, if that is important.

i've got a yellow danelectro d56 u2 from the 90s with the bridge switched out for one with individual intonation. pic related but the pic's not mine. playing effectless with custom-gague strings for open tuning for an twinkly emo/math band, into a fender frontman 212

i just started a powerviolence band and i'm working on my setup. i have a schecter omen seven, which isn't the best but gets the job done. how can i get that beefy / raw PV tone without dumping a shitload on a massive-ass amp?

Really good taste m8. Classics will always be classics. Back when I was 15 I'd have called you a pleb because I hated Fender headstocks on basses though kek. If I was going to get a new bass with no budget limit it would probably be a MIA Fender Precision. I've been seduced by the tone for a long time and the look has grown on me despite the fact that I used to dislike it on the basis that it looks "too similar to a strat". Would never get a 5 string though, at least not one with a 4+1 headstock. It still triggers me to this day kek.
>>
>>61571617
Not to come off like a rondo shill, but you're better off with a SX. If you can though, get a Squier Classic Vibe, they are unbeatable for the price. If you can't, try to get a Squier Standard. I don't know much about Affinity and Vintage Modified series, although seafoam green strats with lipsticks look dope as fuck. They make me want to get on a surf table and I don't even know how to surf.

Tuning pedals are used in live rigs because weather differences and heat from stage lights can knock guitars out of tune. To be fair the same thing can fuck up the tuning of an analog synth and require fine tuning as well.

It's not a Casio m80... You either shape the waves yourself or load samples. Also instrument simulation isn't even the most important part when it comes to emulating an ensemble, the most important things are loops and tracks.
That said, I don't play classical. There's no point in keeping playing 17th century music in 2016. Specially considering those very compositions wouldn't even exist if all they did was to play 4 centuries old music. What did I tell you about embracing the future? Also I don't have a chip on my shoulder, I just want people to stop stalling progress and get with the times. And I said chillwave, not retrowave. I don't see where you get the "rooted in the 80s" bullshit. It's a continuous evolution. Of course all music has roots in the past, but the point is moving forward. Rock and Roll had its roots in blues but it was a new thing back in the 50s. This is the same idea. When you drive you're supposed to look through the windshield, not at the rear view mirror.

It's like you've never heard of Parker and their guitars made of composite materials, elixir strings with nanotechnology based coatings or line6's modelling guitars. There is cutting-edge technology in the guitar industry, there's even probably more innovation than in the synth industry which has been basically incremental ever since digital synths were invented.
Some examples of this:
>solid body guitars
>bolt on necks
>floating tremolos
>tune o matic
>b benders
>aluminum necks
>locking trems
>active pickups
>coil tapping
>alternate wirings
>a myriad of effects

Funny how the only innovations that have really stuck around are all pre 1970, except for plek which is just another way to do fret dressing. Floyds have fallen out of favor decades ago and aluminium and composite instruments have been relegated to meme category. The average guitarist has a backwards mentality, admit it. There's a reason why superstitious blooze lawyers play guitar instead of synths.
>>
>>61572390
Hey, that sounds pretty good for emo/math rock. Jealous.
As for powerviolence, personally I'd just use cheap shit, toss any old distortion on there and play around with gain & eq a bit, it's always seemed like a genre where you can get away with a shitty tone if you need to. I'm too poor to afford anything other than cheap shit anyways, so I can't really help much.
>>
>>61575559
Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with bassists doing interesting pieces. My issue is with those who neglect their deeds as bassists and engage in absolute wankery for the sake of showing off. That's why I love David Ellefson, great tone, does what the band needs him to do for the sake of the songs, does amazing fills where they fit and his solos are great.

First active pickups were around the 80s, I don't know when did sustainers make their appearence but I'm sure it's far after the 70's, and amp modelling is more popular than ever with touring musicians using stuff like the axe fx to cut down the weight of their rigs.
Of course if you take blues as an example, which is a more down to earth and simple genre that you could play on a cheap acoustic in the countryside in front of three people and a lamb, innovations are going to be useless.

Bass amps: Is it worth it to upgrade a bedroom amp? I currently have a 10W SS combo with an 8'' speaker, unsurprisingly it doesn't handle an open E string very well and I'll be upgrading to a 5-string soon, so it'll be even worse. What exactly should I look for? It can't be any louder than my 10W at near max volume and I want it to sound good. Phil Jones makes some really small amps, but they also start at 70W (and I'm pretty sure there was something about amps at a low volume sounding thin and bad), there is a SS bass head with 5W, could I couple that with a 15'' or 12'' cab? Would that sound decent or just like crap?
I tried a 12'' 70W combo before, brand new, but the hissing was so loud that it was nearly as loud as my bass at 2 or 3 /10 volume and the store I returned it to ensured me that that is normal (because you wouldn't notice it at a higher volume?).

and the great majority of the time it's obviously not worth it
>>
>>61577030
When buying from a shop, you've got a warrenty, and can usually get a free setup. But shops might sell used stuff too. It's probably easier to send back some stuff bought new though, a friend had a huge problem with an used Gallien Krueger 2001RB, and it took like a whole month to finally get rid of it.
>>
>>61577030
Only If you care to spend up to 50% of the cost on a warranty. Just make sure you can return it if you notice something off/you can't live with. If it's a good brand you should be OK. I search for under priced used in my market and find good deals up to 75% less than new. Some just need some TLC and get resold after repair.

There's Schecter. I own pic related and it fits the bill. Only downside is, of course, the edgelord designs they're notorious for.

Other than that, PRS comes to mind. They're more vanilla and they're exactly what you want. Check out the SE Custom 24. Or just the regular Custom 24 if you're looking to invest more.
>>
>>61577475
That's like half of Ibanez's catalog, just swap the pickups with some good ones. Jackson has some without FR and EMGs, but they're more sparse. Add in ESP LTDs and Schecters.

Also isn't it rather two octaves ? Low E (open) to Mid E (12th fret), Mid E (12th fret) to high E (24th fret)

Fair enough about actives, sustainers aren't really popular among the average guitarists though.
I mentioned blooze lawyers as a synonym with cork sniffers, not because of actual blues. Even famous guitarists like Slash are like this (muh 59 les paul). When I said "57 year old guitar" the number wasn't a random figurative number to make a point.

You sound mad. The FA08 is really loaded with features, and it's even an aesthetic statement. I mean, look at it, no wood or other ancient materials. Look at those shapes and color layouts. Look at the pad. It screams future. It screams disdain for plebs and nostalgia.

Michael Romeo has tiny sausage fingers

I don't know why composite necks aren't more popular. You'd think people would like necks that need little adjustment and wont easily warp. Fuck traditionalists
>>
>>61579721
you the octopus's guy? plenty of good guitarists have small hands. I think one of them did a ted talk, some tiny girl did an acoustic set with all the frills you could want from an acoustic shred.
>>
>>61579832
Guitars are fairly steeped in tradition, less so than other instruments though. The upside of absurd consumer preferences is cheaper prices on modern instruments to be competitive. The downside is less incentive for innovators.

News flash: the average guitarist is a traditionalist. I think the 2016 Gibson lineup speaks for itself.
And people dare to tell me I "have a chip on my shoulder"

I'm not going to read up the lengthy comment chain because it sounds really awful

But tell me, do you actually believe modern synthesizers can accurately reproduce the sound of an electric guitar?

Yes they can, through sampling. Guitars are but a vestige of the past. Their main advantage is price. Just look at guitar pro's RSE, it has gotten almost as good as a high end synth lately.
>>
>>61580409
Ayy keyboard samplers can't even sound like a real piano yet why do you think it could sound like an instrument that plays completely differently?
>>
>>61580036
>But tell me, do you actually believe modern synthesizers can accurately reproduce the sound of an electric guitar?
Isn't that literally what axe fx does?
>>
>>61580314
Hi Kurt :^). I'm not really a Rondo detractor but comparing them to Gibsons is abysmal.
>>
>>61580454
Axe FX modulates an existing signal, reproduction is doing the same signal from scratch.
>>

>>
Speaking of synths, what's the best one on the market right now? I'd like to expand my musicality
>>
>>61580493
that's actually impressive for being synthesis, but I still think sampling is superior.
>>
>>61580510
>I'd like to try a new instrument
>FETCH ME YOUR FINEST KEYBOARD
you better be buying used if you're gonna actually get the best keyboard on the market for this, anon. It'd be pretty lame to take a hit from such a thing.
>>
>>61580621
Ok, maybe not the best but something quality. I always buy used or trade straight up. I've got too many guitars as it is
>>
>>61580510
Probably Korg Kronos
>>
>>61580510
vsts because they're easy to upgrade while a 10 year old synth is practically worthless except to hipster who make meme music
>>
>>61580409
So you're telling me that your keyboard can literally
>model any pickup and amplifier
>play microtones as easily and quickly without interruption (continuums aren't nearly as practical and don't try to mention pitch knobs)
>play chords that harmonize themselves over 3 octaves
>play similar parts despite massive differences in note placement without Rudess-tier technique
>reproduce nuances in right hand techniques (pinch harmonics tapping etc)
And to the point where blind testing wouldn't be able to tell the difference

Also I'm assuming that by claiming guitars are "obsolete" you're not only referring to production but also live music
>>
>>61580596
I don't know if they have synthesized keyboards, but I think a keyboard with small but reap strings and hammers with individual piezos being modeled would be almost as good as sampling a piano. Sampling is superior for a achieving one perfect example of something without inflection, but that's not a ton of instruments right there. Keyboards express themselves through volume, duration, and muting, many other instruments allow, for example, bending. This includes for example string and many wind instruments. For these instruments synthesizing is a much more appropriate approach.
>>
>>61580644
I'm gonna start by saying there's a ton of quality keyboards out there and unlike guitars what you're shopping for is more likely technical specs and features than tone. That's because midi exists. Considering that a ton of features will be more of a burden than help to a new player, you're better off looking on craigslist and just looking up the models you find than seeking a specific model.
