Been going through some more stuff by Debashis Bhattacharya. I've heard other versions of these raga before, but for some reason i like the simple slide guitar/tabla setup a lot more than the usual sitar combinations.
This is still very much classical Hindustani music, but there's some blues/american primitive guitar vibes too. Check it out if you're into either one of those genres, because this guy is good. It probably doesn't matter with which album you start. Every one of them I've heard has had the same outstanding quality.

What a wasted opportunity.
Seriously, the only problem I have with this is the terrible quality that ruins everything: you can't catch all the little arrangements in every song, you can't distinguish almost any instrument when the tracks go busy, it doesn't even sound charming, like in a lo-fi indie record, it's just annoying.
Sure, you can still hear relatively clearly the fantastic melodies, and the dynamics and crescendos can still hit you hard and carry you in an emotional journey. In fact, "World Police" and "Moya" hit pretty hard, and I really enjoyed them.
But I can find "World Police" on "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists", and "Moya" on "Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada".
"She Dreamt She Was a Bulldozer" is also on "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists", and "Steve Reich" sounds a lot better on the bootleg of the John Peel Session.
I don't feel like rating this, it's just not something I would put a number on it, it's hard to explain why.
Conclusions? Get "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven!", "Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada" and "John Peel Sessions: Live" and listen to them. Then you won't really need to listen to this, because you hard everything here, in a better quality.

Nice to know good albums in the dutch language are possible. Heavily relying on the brass, this is a folk album that manages to be just different enough from other folk music to be worth checking out. The lyrics are quite no-nonsense and the folksy semi-spoken delivery fits them neatly. Among the 16 tracks there's a number of songs that feel like filler though, pleasant enough but not memorable in any way. It's a pretty tight album overall, there's not a lot of stuff on here that I loved but it's a good listen all the same. 7/10

Very fuzzy rock music with an obvious Arabic vibe going on. It's an album that's definitely more about its nice psychedelic sound than the songwriting, which is fine but hardly stellar. I know Selda is a protest singer but I'm not quite sure what she protests against, for this is lost in translation.

Nicely puts a variety of traditional japanese instruments on display, although it feels like sometimes it doesn't do a lot more than that. The tracks on solo instruments are pleasing to listen to, but no more. The better tracks are the ones where the arrangements are more multi-faceted, such as the 4th track, featuring shakuhachi (a kind of flute), glockenspiel, and several string instruments. The track that follows, played on two kotos, is the best thing on this album. The koto has a very pretty sound and the interplay between the two is excellent. The whole album sounds very asian (you know what kind of sound I'mt alking about) and as a result, you can basically tell if you want to listen to this album by how much you're interested in "that" sound. I liked it in any case, although the compositions often felt a little too bare-bones for me. 7/10

>Tuxedomoon - Desire
More obviously post-punk than its experimental contemporary This Heat, but still, this album strays very much away from the typical image of post-punk and I love it. Opening with a hazy electric organ and a lazy bass, split by a desire to be both jazz (note the prominent sax) and classical (note the string section in the background) this track ends up being closer to avant-prog than post-punk, at least until the jittery synths and the gloomy vocals kick in. The minimal synth beats and the gloomy bass lines that are all over this record really are the most consistent factors on this album, with the rest of the music shifting from more clear-cut post-punk (such as the title track) to instrumental freakouts (see the excellent "Incubus") to more sparse tracks that are more focused on setting a general mood ("Again" being a prime example). In any case, Tuxedomoon looks to be one of the few bands in post-punk that refuses to be pinned down in a certain box, instead showing how versatile they are without turning their music into a mishmash of incoherent ideas. Is it always ewually successful? No, but even when the songs aren't always amazing, they are still unique and add at least something to the album. Rock music needs more bands like Tuxedomoon. 8/10

edm is not a "genre," it's a silly umbrella term used by american journalists in the 90's who couldn't see the distinction between the various genres of dance music.
dance music is very strongly tied to particular locations, particular eras, and particular clubs and associated particular DJs. it's developments in these unique contexts that creates a genre and microgenre. house and techno have very different context and yes, they often sound very different. first track is techno, the second is house:

Honestly man it wasn't too great, I fucked up a lot because I was planning on having an entire band back me up but it wasn't working out and I pulled the plug two weeks away from the show.
So I tried teaching my brother 9 songs in 14 days and the result was messy but at least fun.
We're having another show in March and my goal is to round up musicians to perform it with.
Honestly a European tour might not be out of the question in a few years, especially if we could crash at some Memer's© houses along the way. Would be interesting at least.

My annoyance is from the fact that I don't give a shit about the particular locations, particular eras, and particular clubs and associated particular DJs and really only care about the differences in the way the music sounds. And if you focus on the way music sounds, a lot of music made using electronic devices that people dance to (is that better?) sound way too similar to deserve their own genres. Almost every other genre exists independently of location and is used to categorize music based on what it actually sounds like.

More Sequentia goodies and this time it’s great! Some Notre Dame school performances of Philipp the Chancellor (what a name) that remind me a lot of the Hildy performances from this wonderful ensemble. The arrangements are minimal, more concentrated on the organum. The tracks with the instrumental backing are closer to being a droning accompaniment with occasional melodies. These, however, also tend to parody the vocal performances. There’s also lute - flute doot-doot performances. Maybe it’s a harp, not sure. Some plucked string instrument definitely.
I really liked Barbara Thornton on her soloing pieces, especially the 14 and a half minute Veritas, Equitas. I find her voice to be relaxing and emotive. The collective’s leader, Bagby, does a good job too.
Very good stuff. Liked it better than the first 2 CDs from Sequentia edition.

RIO-wannabe, gypsy sounding ass music ass album ass music. This stuff is full of mostly uneventful, entirely tame baby-tier avant-prog. Compared to what it rivals ("Kew. Rhone.", "Måltid" and friends) this is some of the most pathetic stuff I've ever heard. It is weak, soft like melted ice cream. Even sitting uncomfortably in the avant-prog genre, it does almost nothing to lash out wildly at conventions like its genre cohorts.
Mostly it is just mostly quite actually bad gypsy-style chamber sort of jazz music. It is so starkly bland and uneventful that it reminded me of a board game meant to simulate stock trading. When it moved towards fun, quirky rhythms it did so in with all the conviction of a two-toed sloth on ritalin. When it touched on Glassian rhythmic styles it did so with all the creativity of a toddler who had the entire frontal lobe and right hemispehre of their brain blown out by a 10-hour filibuster against local zoning issues.
Certain sections of this album took its lazy, disinterested style to heart and created something with an interesting style that still managed to hold interest (The track Valse Chinoise, for example). This does nearly nothing to save this album from the fact that is the laziest, most disinterested work of music that I've heard in a while.
I'dunno about this one, guys. It kind of nearly bored me to death, back, and then death again. Everything it had to offer was completely bitch slapped into unconsciousness by the absolute barren wasteland of intensity. Instruments played like musicians arms were made of spaghetti type music.

I think that's the issue then. Dance is a "social" genre, if that makes any sense. You may not give a shit about the locations/clubs/djs, but dance music was often classified by those parameters because people didn't generally listen to this stuff at home (and this is why IDM was appealing when it first came out) they'd go to clubs to listen to it. So you'd have your house night (which is derived much much from funk and soul - not all of it though), your techno nights (back then it had a little more of futuristic spin to it, like YMO or Kraftwerk) and then various genres were born out of those. It's just a really different perspective or cultural lens with how you appraise dance music. Why must you view every genre the same way? It seems reductive to me to take it out of context, but you do you.
Of course, it's changed a bit now, and more and more people are listening to club music at home (especially in america, though here in london most people I know only listen to club music AT clubs), but there are still genres really exist mostly live at club venues, like grime.
Back to everything sounding the same, I don't know, I really don't think many of the genres do? Do you seriously think breakbeat hardcore sounds similar to grime or acid house or dubstep or industrial techno or trance or dub techno or footwork? I find that hard to imagine, but if so, maybe it's just that you need to listen to more of it.
Somehow this album is even less enjoyable than the Calculating Infinity. Oh well. Anyone know of any mathrock bands that are similar to Nomeansno?

Listening to both of Slint's albums since the first one's just under half an hour. I've also seen Spiderland get posted around /mu/, probably as a gag, but I don't know. So far Tweez sounds nice, has a good laid back sound to it.

I think the different genres of electronic dance music and dance music in general stem from the fact that this music is intended to be danced to. The small differences between these genres define the way you dance and that's the sole purpose of the music. It has to make you dance the way you want to dance. It's heavily linked to the clothes you wear, the drugs you take, the social circles you're in and the people you want to fuck.
Even classical dance music had these genre distinctions even though they aren't so different musically and these dances had geographical tags attached to them just like EDM (there's a thousand different waltzes).
When judging the music itself without the dancing in mind it's not necessary to make these distinctions, but i don't think seperating the music and the dance has any use.

That all makes sense, but I notice people who listen to house/techno/EDM seem to care a lot about using the correct terminology for the genres where the differences are subtle, and I think that can be counterproductive. I guess I'm trying to say that your objection to using "EDM" as an umbrella term is kind of silly, and the idea that no one can refer to a very specific kind of music, like dubstep, under a greater umbrella term like EDM or techno is hinders discussion more than it helps in a lot of situations.
I also notice that this phenomena is particular to danceable electronic music. What genres do Holly Herndon or OPN or Nicolas Jaar fall under? As far as I know they're pretty much all classified as "electronic music" or "experimental music" and it doesn't get much more specific than that. And from what I've heard, there's more variety within those discographies than there are between entire genres of EDM (like UK Dubstep and Drum & Bass). What I'm trying to say is that the specificity of genres in EDM is much greater than in any other kind of music like jazz or rock. If I call a swing musician a jazz musician or a post-punk musician a rock musician no one will care.

I liked Tweez more because I felt like there was more going on, it was funnier to hear voices and audio between tracks, like when he's taking a drink of water and all that. Spiderland was just slow and empty and it almost felt folky at times, and I'm averse to folk music in general. Sorry guys.
For now, I'm going to return to Nomeansno. Hope their second effort was as good as their first.

I really enjoyed this album, and I think it's my new favorite of the month so far. I dig how the group manages to be atmospheric while still being pretty minimal in style. Karin's vocals really fit their sound and the lyrics were somewhat-cryptic. I'd say my favorite song is either Neverland or Marble House. 8.5/10 overall. Definitely much better than some other Scandinavian electro I've listened to this month...

Now I'm starting to get into the psychedelic portion of the month, and this album was a great start for sure. Right off the bat the free-form freakouts set the tone and the fast-pace of the album. The drums were a big plus for me on this album, as well as the odd guitar tones on some of the songs. I had already been familiar with Transparent Radiation because of Spacemen 3's cover, so it was cool to hear the original with the unfucked-with lyrics. My favorite track was either Hurricane Fighter Plane or War Sucks. 8/10 overall, with more listens this score will definitely increase.

yeah, i've definitely noticed that people into dance scenes are more sensitive about the music being called the "correct label" and i couldn't really tell you why for certain. i think the issue with "edm" is that there are stylistic differences between the genres, so two people who say they like edm can have absolutely nothing in common in terms of taste. you might be shocked by this, and all you have to do is pop in /bleep/ to confirm it, but most people don't like everything dance genre. honest to god i don't see much in common between dubstep and techno - i think it's odd to lump those together. i guess it's all about the fine details: dubstep drums rarely use breaks and often features a clap instead of snare and there's a lot of reverb on snare or clap hits and it's tempo is much slower than dnb's. this may not be pertinent to you, but it makes a big difference in sound to people who pay attention to the stuff.
also on the edm point, it's more the context and history surrounding the term if anything. i've gone on rants before about the almost dismissive way that journalists reported on dance music (+ now here's a "new" edm that constitutes big room house and stuff like brostep. so that's confusing as well). idk, my issue is that sometimes people talk about dance music like it's all the same, not bothering to understand the mechanics of the subs and mids of the bass, the drum programming/sampling, bpm, production methods, and yes, context (we'll have to agree to disagree on the divorcing point). i don't think every time you have a discussion you have to be hyper specific - this whole back and forth i've called it club music. most people don't take issue with that.

I've gained some insights on club music from this discussion, thanks.
While most of this album has angular (and rather harsh) synths and samples, a few tracks on here show an unusual sense of melody. Songs such as "Great God Pan" or "You Were Wrong" (best track of the month so far) are quite effective when set in the context of the rest of the album. Really those two tracks alone are worth the price of admission.
Besides that, this album also has solid pacing and an overall consistent theme (which is impressive considering album's varied sonic palette). My only gripes are that the more abstract and atonal Laika gets on this album, the less focused he becomes. A few too many tracks on here just seem to noodle around aimlessly with little bearing on composition
i'll save secret gifts for another time. it sounds to heavy for right now.

Finished with Sex Mad. You have no idea how disappointed I am. After that wonderful debut fusing several genres together, it looks like they elected to go straight hardcore punk from then on. Toshiki Kadomatsu - Sea Is a Lady (1987)

Soulless, corporate, too over-produced, but goddamn is it charming. Its so cheesy it kinda crosses into the realm of being good, and its basically just vaporwave in 1987, its /super/ obvious where vaporwave gets most of its inspiration from. Then again, the criticisms about its soullessness absolutely do still stand, this album sounds like it was made by robots who were given a script on how to make the most commercially viable cheesy '80s pop schlock.

Boris - Pink (2007)

In which I inadvertently continue the Boris chart I failed at doing over the summer. /This/ is the fucking Boris album I dreamed about. None of the pretty but meandering soundscapes of Flood, none of the drone overdosing of Feedbacker, none of the buttrockish tendencies of Heavy Rocks of Akuma no Uta, this stuff is absolutely /prime/. The opener is absolutely serene, and is probably the best track on the album, but the following tracks are so absolutely exhilirating and heavy and they just sound so good. This is everything I want in Boris and in metal.

Sn's AOTY was an interesting choice. I was really digging the second half of this ambient album when it was picking up in pace but felt the first halt lingered uneventfully for far too long. It's not so much it's longevity that I disliked but more so that Acronyms tried to run the distance with singular distinctive effects. It stood out among the lush background like an eyesore (in this case, earsore?) to me but I did appreciate the seamless transition June carried.
Overall I enjoyed the listen and could easily see myself coming back to it under the right mood.

Hey Anon chose the beautiful Never Were The Way She Was as his AOTY and can only thank him for introducing me to it.
I loved every minute of it, but for an album to reach the 9-10 scale for me there has to be standout tracks as well and I just didn't feel like coming back to any particular track(s).
Still, it could very well serve as a blueprint for an upcoming GOAT seeing as Colin Stetson plays with variety in moods, timbre, instrumentation and arrangements very wonderfully.
I'm just going to listen to this all night and think about things now.
