/daily/ I had a thought the other day.
Before you became a regular funposter in the board's worst general, what were your thoughts on trips?
Did they change at all once you adopted one?
>>
>>61538497
I joined /daily/ shortly after starting to go on /mu/ but never saw why people got so pissy regarding trips. Does it really matter?

Some argue that adopting a personality hinders productive discussion. In some cases they're right, especially when certain behaviors become expected from trips because it's their gimmick but at the same time, if we'd just ignore the filler (regardless of anonymity or not) then everything would be smooth sailing.
I'd argue that's the biggest concern. Some people just hate the idea of attention seeking too, but in some cases it's helpful.

>>61537321
Jesus, all those TBAs.

How do you even know for sure all of those artists WILL release their album in 2016? I bet at least a third of them will be delayed till 2017.

>>61538497
I've only had a trip for a few months now, but for the few years I've been here, I've noticed most trips stayed confined in certain threads. Most people posting in like 10 threads a day were just attention whores. The best funposters like Antz are banned or got bored, so there's not much of a point anymore.

I really only use this trip for daily and sharethreads. Otherwise I'm just anon.
>>
>>61538497
Don't care if anyone trips or not unless they just mindlessly spam.

I,personally, am too lazy to take off my trip when funposting outside of /daily/. I already got a 4chan pass to minimize the shitposting workload to the max.

>>
>>61538497
I thought trips were a bit annoying, but only because I could keep track of certain trips being annoying. Even then I wasn't opposed to the general idea and there were a couple of trips I liked. After /daily/ I realised that trips are subhuman garbage, now I filter every single one of them, especially you guys.

No, you're definitely right. Personally I enjoyed the idea of trips on /mu/ because you get the character of the board while adopting the accountability that other forums have through membership (without the terrible community).
>>
>>61538497
I think it's nice that there are some trips, but I wouldn't like this board if it were mostly trips. I also drop mine when I'm outside of /daily/, I don't feel like being associated with my opinions. I've never really had anything against trips, I think they get hate because a minority of them are attention whores that shitpost in a way that's not really funny or constructive. I think the animosity towards trips in general threads is kinda dumb tho, it's nice to have a sense of community like in /daily/.

That album had lots of interesting sounds going on - that was an interesting technique. As a percussionist myself, I enjoy hearing things played a different way. For example, Volker Hennes - Emperor Ambassador uses an exciter to get interesting tones out of drum heads.

> Giovanni Di Domenico & Jim O'Rourke - Arco
A rather (okay, very) slow to develop work of bow'd strings and such. This is an album very much about tone and timbre, much moreso than many other aspects of it.

And in regards to that, it succeeds. It is rich and full of life, even with entirely simple musical ideas. Effectively this skirts as close to the territory of drone as one can get and still be called "Music" by *the unenlightened*.

So, for the most part this stuff is pleasant. However, as the album progresses it begins to slowly hamball it up with beeps and boops and other wacky sound effects. It is a fine addition in regards to interest, as it spiced of the mix of textures a bit, but it collapsed the sensation of this work a bit in my view.

That is, this work that feels so much like a work with a backbone of its rich tones and textures. The sounds that are slowly added as the album continues become less and less rich, eventually coalescing into something that can only be described as "Kazoo symphony".

With this middle, middling section of the work excluded, we have a fine album that displays the strengths (and weaknesses) of simple compositions that prop themselves up near-entirely on texture.

Fails in some regards, succeeds in others. Altogether not bad.

also fug it just gimme recs I'm gonna fill out the calendar maybe try to keep it to a theme or something but I don't know what theme it should be so anything really you guys decide.

Listened to this for the Haydn trumpet concerto. Loved the second movement but I was pleasantly surprised by the Hummel composition. The motifs were much more catchy and joyful to my plebeian ear.

In terms of the soloist, I am not too familiar with trumpet soloists in classical music so I have no basis to compare her to anyone. I'd let her play my trumpet though (if you know what I mean).

7+ or 8-/10, not sure.

Sorry for your loss, anon.
If you like or are interested in drone or ambient music, Eliane Radigue's Trilogie de la Mort is gorgeous. The work is influenced the Tibetan book of the dead, as well as Radigue coping with the loss of her guru (spiritual guide), and her son. It's extremely meditative, but complex in subtle detail.

Hurley has got an impeccable ear for melody, and his specific style of americana is incredibly inviting and comfy. This album is kinda in one ear and out the other, but its got a very nice subtlety to it, that just makes it really cozy. Gonna be checking out Have Moicy! soon.

Manhattan Research Inc. is basically the best thing ever, so I knew I'd love this. Scott was such an incredible composer, and his talents are exhibited really well here. There's a reason why so many of these songs are used in so many cartoons, they're so catchy, but still complex and impressive from a technical standpoint, the percussion specifically. And its really adorable, which is a trait I usually don't associate with jazz.

Loreena McKennit - Elemental (1985)
>celtic folk music

Wow, how shockingly forgettable and mediocre. The arrangements here are very poorly done and cheesy, they sound like rejected RuneScape tracks. But McKennitt's voice definitely saves this album from the 0.5 doldrums, she's got some serious pipes.

The Midnight Eez - The Midnight Eez (2011)
>instrumental hip hop, boom bap, jazz rap

Really cool instrumental boom bap beats. Honestly, these would just not be as good with someone MCing over them, they're pretty pristine on their own. They're not too terribly interesting or special though, they're just really solid boom bap instrumentals.

Still chuggin' along. Jeff Buckley's "Grace" wasn't for me, although the title track was nice. Twelfth album of the day right here.
>>
>>61543923
Born in the USA had some discernible beats to it and I enjoyed it. Lined up something else from him to download
Beats, Noise and Life was very focused noise, nice and pulsing and grating
Hanatarashi wasn't my favorite Hanatarash but was Hanatarash nonetheless
Spirits Having Flown had some really tight, well-written and well-constructed songs that still stand up today and make great covers but it also had one or two very dated relics
Blackout's good tracks were mostly front-loaded but it had some sleek production to help it the rest of the way through
Cher's Believe had a lot more poorly done auto-tune than I remember. The rest of the album is in the same vein just not as catchy and a little more groovy in some instances
Boxcutter's Glyphic isn't really standing out to me. This is the really layered dubstep that lingers close to dnb/garage at times but the track Foxy really stood out

>Flying Saucer Attack - S/T (1993)

Some excellent shoegaze-y noise rock with some tribal and occasionally ambient elements. I know that's a mouthful but I feel it best describes Flying Saucer Attack. Flying Saucer Attack's album New Lands is the only other record by this band that I've heard and it's only that one because I found it in a sharethread and it seemed interesting. That album was interesting but it wasn't as interesting as this one: at first, FSA was just giving me a headache in this album but as it went on I realized I was just dehydrated so I drank some water and then I really started to enjoy the thick blanket of loud, heavily distorted guitars and dreamy vocals. 7/10

Long Post alert

Yo 2nd time trying this out and I haven't really posted in here so I'm going to do a bunch of reviews. Probably won't be too long though.

>Jim O'Rourke - Eureka
At first I thought this album wasn't that amazing, and I'll still admit that it's a slow-starter for sure, but I appreciate it a lot more now after several listens, and I'd say it's a contender for my favorite so far. I feel like Sufjan Stevens might have taken some inspiration from this album as it gave me a lot of Illinois and even Age of Adz vibes. I think my favorite song is tied with the title track and Happy Holidays, and I also found the Burt Bacharach cover of Something Big was really enjoyable as well. I'd probably rate it a bit higher than 8/10, but hey it's no big deal right now.

>This Heat - S/T
I didn't really enjoy this very much. I had listened to Deceit and thought that was great, so I had high hopes for this one. It was much more barren in comparison, although it still had the same sense of dread that I heard on Deceit. I appreciated the electronic tinkering on the album though. Favorite song was probably The Fall of Saigon. 6.5/10 overall, but if I give it some more listens it could probably be higher.

>Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
I had only heard Fake Train before listening to Leaves, and with that background, Leaves was a bit more diverse in comparison, which I enjoyed. I'm always down for post-rock vibes and this album delivers on that. This is definitely an album I need to spend some more time with, and I'll definitely go back through their discography and listen to more of their post-hardcore-centric work. Favorite song is either Terminus or Below the Salt. 7/10 for now, but definitely subject-to-change.
>>
>>61544764

>Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy
An event a while ago kept me from listening to emo, and I was expecting a generic emo album going into Twin Fantasy. Boy was I proven wrong. The vocals of this album were a highlight for me, as I'm always into some reverbed, lo-fi vocals. Beach Life-in-Death was a huge standout track to me and it's become possibly my favorite song I've heard in my calendar so far. This is another contender for my favorite so far and I'll definitely be listening to it a lot more in the future. Favorite track is Beach Life-in-Death. 8/10 for now.

>Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun
I thought this album was great, but it's also incredibly long, so I definitely need to spend some more time with it to fully take it in. Like I said before, I'm all about post-rock and drone when it isn't trite and NSB do a good job of offering something original with their psych-folk elements scattered throughout the album. Favortie song is probably either All Animals in the Form of Water or John carpenter. 7.5/10 overall, will definitely improve with more listens.

>Royksopp - Melody A.M.
I had heard of this album before and also heard it was somewhat essential, so I decided to check it out. It's boring as hell, and really only has one or two standout tracks to me. It also sounds incredibly dated compared with other trip-hop and downtempo artists, and not in a good way like Endtroducing... I don't really have any desire to listen to this snoozefest anymore, so this is without a doubt the worst album I've heard so far this month. Favorite track was Poor Leno. 4.5/10 overall.

Also just realized I'm a day behind :( I'll listen to Silent Shout and Red Krayola both tomorrow I guess.

Boris - Boris at Last -Feedbacker- (2003)
>drone metal, drone, noise rock

If the entirety of this album was like the 2nd and 3rd parts, it'd be the best thing ever. But the remaining parts are a pretty vigorous exercise in droney meandering, and that doesn't appeal to me all that much. But can I just say that I'd kill somebody for a fucking 100th of Wata's guitar skills?

Truly underrated Bowie album right here. It might not have the pop mastery of Hunky Dory, the narrative backbone of Ziggy or the Brian Eno of Low, but what it does have is it's status as a set of mesmerizing, varied Bowie tunes that've stood the test of time. It's No Game (part 1), Ashes To Ashes, Fashion and Because You're Young are all top-tier Bowie tunes. This album also lends the crunchiest, most full sounding guitar tone of Bowies career. I can definitely see how much of Montreal (my favorite band) took influence from this album, from the woozy synthesizers, verbose often social lyrics and grandiosity of this thing. One of those rare albums that still sounds startlingly contemporary over 30 years later, but still has that 80's retro charm.

Prurient was decent. Too many times we see the artist repeating the same monotonous speeches over the same textures and melodies (or lack thereof). Though the inclusion of acoustic instruments into the world of noise is admirable, the execution could have been handled with more creative planning and variety. I did appreciate the inclusion of industrial and electronic genres though.

dockstader was every bit as poignant and tense as i expected, great stuff
shields sort of surprised me, in that her presentation of the apocalypse is very avant-prog-ish-ly theatrical and eclectic
kreng was basically what i was made to expect bohren & der club of gore might sound like. little more than a mood-setter, didnt do much for me, "tasteful" instrumentation though

>>61549001
I dunno if it's what you're trying to convey, but if "songwriting is forgettable" is you're biggest complaint from this kind of album, it's not a really substantial indictment. I do think that this album is pretty overrated (because its aesthetic overreaches its message), but the aesthetic is the whole point.

You are also quite right that "No One..." is the gemstone of the album. Jesus, that song rules.
>>
>>61549326
>the aesthetic is the whole point.
exactly! it seems like Giles Corey was going for a cool image instead of great, memorable songs. style over substance. not a fan of that approach. if you're gonna have such a powerful vibe, the tunes gotta match up to that power. I think it's better to make good music with almost no image- probably why I can't get into vaporwave.
>>
>>61549166
I'm really digging the Ark Work already. Big fan of the arrangements. Haven't heard many albums like this.

Thanks for the rec btw, I'm always down for more math rock.
>>
>>61549479
I disagree in the sense that the style IS the substance here. When Duchamp wrote r mutt on an upturned urinal, he wasn't extolling the beauty of rotated porcelain receptacles; rather, he exposed the potential art in normal things "for the sake of the art itself", which I think is the whole point in a lot of Enemies List projects.
>>
>>61549671
But if we take that approach, we could generally extol every album on that premise.

Personally I haven't listened to that album but I do wish the rebuttals you two are offering become more solidified because both defenses aren't giving me a clear picture of what's going on.
>>
>>61549804
>But if we take that approach, we could generally extol every album on that premise.

We could extol any album on the premise that it succeeds on conveying a certain aesthetic, so long as the aesthetic itself is interesting.

Then I agree.

If that's not what you're saying, then I may agree or disagree, and I ask that you unpack that statement a little more for me.

I absolutely see what you mean, but as with R. Mutt, i'm not connecting with Giles Corey's s/t. Art for it's own sake has it's merit, but I get frustrated when any artist eschews an opportunity to effectively utilize their medium in all it's regards- or if they're only good at one aspect. all I can focus on at times is how good i'm expecting the music to be based on the style in which they play, artists they praise, or even the album art. conversely, i'm even disappointed in some of my favorite musicians for not having an image as well-articulated or thought out as their music.

Have you listened to Lightning Bolt (or Black Pus)? I'm pretty sure Brian Chippendale is the most effective multimedia artist i've ever come across. his paintings and music are almost perfectly synonymous. I adore them.
>>
>>61549937
I don't really disagree with anything you say here, except that I find HANL or Giles or whoever we're talking about (it's the same guy) totally fulfills my expectations on what I want from his music, based on what I think is his aesthetic. I don't really think we can convince one another to jump ship on this one, so I'll just finish by saying that I understand where you're coming from, I disagree, and I think it's ok.

And yeah, Lightning Bolt (and Black Pus) both rule. Chippendale's drawings are neat, from what I've seen. He's very maximalist.

I saw LB 3 or 4 years ago in DC, and they blew all the amps out at the RockNRoll Hotel, and had to end their set after 30 minutes or so.
>>
>>61549936
I was focusing mostly on the statement
>he exposed the potential art in normal things "for the sake of art itself"
My understanding of your defense was that if art could be found and praised in the mundane and unintentional then how much more should we be praising the art which was completely intended to be enjoyed?

Obviously I was wrong since you clarified, and I understand where you're coming from much better now.
>>
>>61550075
>I don't really think we can convince one another to jump ship on this one, so I'll just finish by saying that I understand where you're coming from, I disagree, and I think it's ok.
yeah man, that's just the difference in our tastes, and it's cool. much respect. this was a fun conversation.
also, pretty jealous you got to see lightning bolt. I love how they play, with a crowd surrounding brian's set, people leaning on the drums. and the masks he wears! oh, and Chippendale has even done several comic books! there's one I want, maggots, that was printed by a now-defunct publisher so it's hundreds of dollars for a used one -_- maybe some day i'll read it
>>
>>61550078
Yeah, I think to clarify my position, (which hopefully agrees with you're assessment), I would say that some works of art can be important simply because they ask the question "where are the boundaries of what we call 'art'?" Not everything is art, obviously, and probably some things that are called art aren't art. But any attempt to police the boundaries of art will necessarily give birth to art outside of that boundary.

The Ark Work is an exceptionally beautiful album. The melodies and arrangements of the horns give this project a unique aesthetic, mostly alluding to what can I only assume is an ancient one recalling the Ark of the Covenant. Notable as well were the guitar melodies, but I wasn't a fan when tracks like Father Vorizon had the band clumped into this mass that saw little or no change to it's structure over it's run. With no dynamics or negative space to play with, the track did seem like filler to me.

Overall though, much more good than bad to be found and I think I'm just going to listen to this all night. Good rec, Yamir.
>>
>>61550202
Man, there are too many comic books like that, anything that has a small run immediately becomes hugely expensive when it sells out and almost impossible to acquire. there are several from former Fort Thunder members like Chippendale and especially Matt Brinkman that I would love to have but I'm poor and no one is selling anyways.
>>
>>61550239
I can get behind that because the album you're discussing does a rely on an avant-garde approach with the mask and book accompanying it's history. Reminds me a lot of Tristan Perich's 1-bit music because the way the music was inspired is almost more astounding than the work itself (not to imply Corey's album can't do both).
>>
>>61550202
>yeah man, that's just the difference in our tastes, and it's cool. much respect. this was a fun conversation.
agreed. Good conversation is always rare here, but it's the main reason I still lurk from time to time.

And I can temper your jealousy a bit, because the venue had an actual stage, where they played, above the crowd. It's a two-footer, but it's not like we were on the same level, surrounding the Brians. That's not to say that it didn't rule hard, and it was a definite cross off my bucket list of concerts, but it was no basement show. And as far as I can tell, they tour every year or two along the east coast, so I encourage you to see them if you get the shot.

maggots is mainly as costly as it is because it's about 1000 pages, it was 50+ brand new I believe
but
if you're looking for brinkman
just search
he has blogs and stuff, and he can be contacted directly. A friend of mine bought a book directly from him if I remember correctly. I ought to do the same, come to think of it, but I just emptied my money buying moebius comics.

>the way the music was inspired is almost more astounding than the work itself
A significant fraction (probably between 5-15%) of the music I enjoy derives its brilliance not from its sounds, but because of the story behind it, or the originality of it. Stuff like Scott Johnson, or the Disintegration Loops, etc isn't better-sounding than most stuff, but it's more interesting (to me) for other reasons.

This isn't necessarily the same thing, but what were your thoughts on Sunbather? I found it's mixture of shoegaze and black metal polarizing. Up to that point I had never encountered a metal album that I could consider beautiful and I find it's largely due to what I consider originality and aaesthetic.

>tbf aesthetic doesnt usually make for replay value
Agreed. The best albums use it wisely by having it accompany solid material.

Disclaimer: I don't my thoughts are all that original here.

I liked it, but haven't listened to it more than 5 times.

I enjoy post-metal a little bit, black metal a very little bit, and shoegaze a very little bit. So I can enjoy (sometimes intensely) Sunbather, but 99% of the time, I'll prefer something else. It's hard for me to articulate, but generally this music is always placing 3rd in the sprint for my attention.

I'm mostly drawn to post-punk and post-hardcore when I want something aggressive.

I was here a while ago, I meant to get back, I have a huge thing, someone suggested Satori

Satori was great, at first I thought, "wow, do you think they like Sabbath and Zeppelin?" They even do the harmonica thing at one point, but then I realized, nono, they're even better than Sabbath and Zeppelin, and that's a big thing for me to say since I have a ridiculously high reverence for Sabbath, it's not even cult hype, this album is just amazing.

Which is exactly why I turn to Sunbather for it's beauty overall. Interesting thoughts, glad to hear them and to know you don't hate it.

I dislike the genre, generally, but w e w

I guess try Cirith Ungol, then. I want to know if they're good beyond their taste in books

>>
>>61550964

YES, YES THEY ARE

Cirith Ungol's King of the Dead is my all time favorite metal album, I have it on vinyl, they recently reissued it for the first time since 2005, check it out, they were absolutely one of the finest metal bands to grace this earth. I can give you a link to download it if you want.

also, I can take grindcore sometimes, it's one of those things that I kinda like in concept but usually find the execution to just not be up to snuff

what exactly sets them apart from the remainder of grindcore that you dislike though?

well, there's a little bit of noise on their album which I like, and it has memorable sections, but I guess the biggest factor is the instrumentation. everyone is totally on point. I can't believe it was recorded in a day.
