Is there a trick to learning scales all over the fretboard or is it just a matter of repeating until they stick?

So from another thread.. I have a question.

I have a bolt on guitar, a RG655, and the neck pocket makes a clicking noise when I dive up/down on the trem, or when I move the guitar around sometimes.

The neck pocket is super tight, there's almost no empty space between the neck and the body. You can't even fit paper inside.

One tech told me it's the trem springs, but I fail to see how that relates to the neck clicking.

My guess is, it's the paint inside the neck screw hole cracking.

Could it be the trem itself? I have no idea..
>>
>>61294689
Describe the noise more.
>>
I just got and ampeg pf500 bass amp and an acoustic 410 bass cabinet. This is my first rig. Do you thing I did good?
>>
>>61294757
You did well, what kind of bass do you have?
>>
>>61294739

It's like, a really really short click noise. It's not those creak you get when you adjust the truss rod.
>>
>>61294757
>ampeg head
>410 cab
Pretty damn nice for your first rig. Add a 115 of your choice if you play 5-string and you'll be set.
>>
>record jazzy chord progressions with DD-7 loop function
>overdub EHX octave multiplexer basslines
>overdub a few extra guitar parts
>have that shit playing in the background while doing other stuff until it gets boring and I record something new
Comfy af, just need to get an actual looper pedal to be able to use the delay creatively too

Also,
>tfw stepdad has Fender Strat made in USA that he's left untouched for months since his brother fucked with it

What did he do with it?

You can always try to buy it off of him.
>>

This happens more often than I'd like to admit

"Hey, that US Fender Strat is pretty damn nice! Could I borrow it sometime or do you need it right now?"
Seems pretty simple to me.
>>
>>61294926
Treated it like shit basically, some pretty ugly bumps and scratches in the finish, tremolo system quite a bit fucked up due to too much string tension apparently etc.

>>61294932
Welcome to the world of composition and songwriting!

You'll get better at it the more you do - just record yourself/ write things down and listen later.

99% of what you write in the beginning will probably be shit, but stick at it and edit the good ideas from the okay ones and the shit ones, and you'll soon have a collection of usable ideas.

Or you could be like me where 99% of what I write is shit no matter what.
>>
>>61295298

Ok guys, don't shred me from the get-go. I'm a newbie.
I had a stroke last year and have been told to try guitar for therapy and I've always wanted to play. My daughter wants to play also and from the last post what is the best to start with or where should I/we start?
I have all ability with movement but the stroke part frazzled my left side lobe.
We will be starting with a couple of Les Paul's, could anyone get us started.
Thanks.

>>

What exactly do you need help with? Picking out guitars, amps, or where to start with learning? And sorry to hear about your stroke.
>>
>>61297081
I bought a couple of starter packs with guitar, amps and all. Yes I know it is going to be a basic model but I didn't want to throw 2 grand and not be able to pick it up or her not want to play after the newness wears off.
I guess what I need is the basics to get me started. I don't know if Rocksmith is for us or what. I just need to get the basics I guess, where to go.
>>
>>61297280
Actually rocksmith isn't horrible for your situation. It'll help you guys have fun while play and getting comfortable with the guitar. Coming from someone who first started playing with rocksmith then went to a personal teacher after I felt I was comfortable and ready to start learning theory, it works.

I would recommend it for you. Just make it fun at first then worry about it as a more serious hobby later if it ever becomes that.
>>
>>61297280
Rocksmith can be pretty fun and can make your dexterity and whatnot better, but I would start with learning all the basic chords and practicing scales first. Actually, I think Rocksmith teaches you about most of the essentials, so I'd say go for it! You can always study theory when you're not playing, too.

Guys I'm just beginning to learn theory, but what's the point of like Drop C and A tunings? Like

CGCFAD and AGCFAD instead of DGCFAD?
>>
>>61298187
Naw its just the lighting.

>>61298244
Amazon sells them seperately but they are still kind of expensive.
>>
>>61298358
You can get different chord voicings and slightly more range with drop tunings, but most people use them for easy power chords
Also drop A is AEADGbB, not AGCFAD
>>
>>61298406
>more range with drop tunings
the guitar doesn't gain frets if you tune it lower anon
>>
>>61298358
drop tunings are 99.99% of the times used to have an easier time playing power chords as a D on drop C would be played 2 on the 6th and 2 on the 5th string rather than 0 on the 6th and 2 on the 5th.
>>
>>61298479
You get two more notes if you drop your lowest string a step down.
And frets mean fuckall anyway if you play with a slide or do thimble tapping like Bumblefoot

Staff notation is the most comprehensive system and will be taken more seriously by other musicians, especially those with formal training. However, it's a lot of work to learn, and isn't the only way to communicate your ideas.

You've probably seen guitar tabs around. They're pretty straightforward, and with a little practice you'll be able to write them down fast enough to catch whatever pops into your head.

The principles behind it are simple as fuck, if you want to fluently read and play it, practice. That's literally all it takes.
>>

That's because they're not pianos. You also can't bend on a piano, that doesn't make it worse than a stick.

Straight up tabs are shit. Tabs with sheet on top is the best, it gives you a quick insight of where to play, and when to play.

Tabs with sheets in top contain the same information (in theory), but it's brainless and shoehorns you into playing it the way someone else intended. With sheet music there simply is a note and you decide where to play it on the neck, it's great especially for beginners because they are forced to learn the notes and where they are on their instrument.
>>
>>61298956
Same here, re-learned it as an adult though. It's really not that hard.
>>
>>61298948

>>61298984
True, but if you want to play something exactly like it sounds on a record, you're going to want tabs to get the right chord voicing. I still agree with you for single notes.

>>
>>61299012
Oh, come on. It's not like you have 50 different ways to play each chord. And once you find out where on the neck the original is played the rest is usually pretty clear as well, because nobody slides around on the neck unnecessarily, especially when it's a fast or complex song.

>Same here, re-learned it as an adult though. It's really not that hard.
It's really not difficult to learn.

I know some basic theory, but it's actually difficult for me to know what I'm even playing on guitar, since while I can use my tuner to figure out which chords I'm playing, I can't figure out whether or not they're major/minor chords or some other variant since I rarely play in standard tuning.

Keep my SR500 or get a used PBass ?

That's kinda my dilemma atm. Play mostly on fingers and aim at getting a sound between noise, indie rock, shoegazish, round with lots of overdrive and texture.
The more I read, the more I feel like I should be playing on a pbass, but spending hundreds for yet another bass is a hassle..
The sr is fine and all, but when I got to play on a jbass I was like "holy fuck this is so comfortable", and I like the plug and play spirit of the pbass rather than bothering with the eq of the ibanez.
wut do ?

Test how high the volume goes on it, and it will briefly shut down when you hit a note or two above it's unknown limit. The control isn't perfectly balanced (as in, the real middle volume is attained around 7 and max volume at about 9, the volume between 4 to 7 doesn't really increase alot). I had the settings of Gain at 5, all EQ at 7, and all switches off, the volume shut down at around 7 I think. This happened with two units so it wasn't just one defective one, it was reported online by alot of people who used them for a gig or two and it happened to them

I think there is, I have a Chinese one and I get a little jealous every time I play a Korean or Elitists (kind of expensive). The Korean made ones are just a bit better in quality but nothing amazing. The Casino stock P90s also are a bit dark too IMO but still can make nice clean sounds.

Damn. Hopefully it'll be okay.

would it be worth spending $200 more for a Japanese one?
>>

Finding a made in Korea model is pretty easy though. You just have to call email whoever is selling a used one and ask for the serial number.

You can find them for the same price as chinese ones.

What semihollow/hollow should I get for ~$300?
>>
are peavey amps good?
>>
>>61301679
Maybe, MIJ squiers are one of those things that people overrate the fuck out of. I've played many that are nothing special, they're basically entry level MIM tier.

If I were you I'd just get the best used MIM Fender you can buy (assuming you have around $500) A used classic 50s/60s strat for example will be way better than any squier imo.
>>
>>61301669
>>61301496
So I'm looking around and it seems that they've probably fixed the problem since its original release but I bought used to I have no idea what time it was manufactured. Hopefully if anything happens to it when I get it I can return it. Now I'm nervous. I did a lot of research but never found anything about that but I didn't know to look up about the fault light.
>>
>>61301704
Yes, they make nice things.
>>
>>61301422
Depends on the guitar, if it is a good one, yes get it refreted, no you can't do it yourself, find someone local who has references and is a pro.
Get an estamate, then make a decision.
>>
>>61301720
Some of their tube amps are very good, look at the VK's 5150's and 6165's.

>>
>>61294221
I bought that at the beginning of the year and it's cool for a practice amp but you'll never play with others with it. I sold it and bought a VOX AC-15 and am 100x happier with it. SPending the extra cash is worth it consider that thing is way too expensive for what it lets you do.

not immediately. the pickup on the guitar is broken and i'd just as soon get a new one than pay for repara, so i'm just playing without the amp

if you get a Jag be prepared to be annoyed by all the bs that comes with it, can't stay in tune well and you get a lot of buzz from the bridge. but once you put work into it they're great.

Save for a Mexi, you won't regret it. It just might take some time to find one at that price. GC has used all the time and you can always return it if you don't like it. I've not returned one yet. They seem to have a pretty good vetting system. Search and you will find.

Current Gear:
Gibson SG Special Faded (Love it)
Fender Geddy Lee MIJ Jazz bass (Love it also)
Fender 5E3 Tweed Combo clone
David Eden WT-400 bass head and Bag end cabinet
Boss ME-50 multi-effects unit
Desired Gear:
Fender Nashville telecaster MIJ
Gretsch Duojet

I have expensive tastes and I hate it
>>
>>61303292
>I hate expensive tastes
You really need to get into modding. You can get fender and gibson tone for less. As far as gretsch duojet goes nobody really makes a guitar with the same looks. But you can get guitars with the same scale length and put in filtertrons.

current gear-

>hundred dollar classical I can't play because I punched a door and mangled my knuckle (durr hurr), I don't know if I'll ever be able to play it again, I like classical more than playing with a pick tee bee aych, it's depressing

The new units suffer from it too. The Pf800 was the problem solution Ampeg came up with. Ampeg went through a dark period of really junky stuff and didn't really come back until recently with a handful of products, the Pf800 being one of them (Heritage 810, V4B, and the new tube Portaflex heads being the other good stuff as of recent)

Should I get the Roland RE-201 or the Boss Re-20?

What's the difference? All I can tell is the Boss sounds a bit thinner and seems a little less versatile.

the es335 is from this multimillionaire guy that gave it to muh dad (my dad used to play) because he had like 5 billion guitars

the amp is my dad's

I don't really give a shit, I mean it's nice but I just want to play classical again and have my hand heal, sorry I got lucky poorfag

>>61303588
thanks, and yeah I was looking into getting a fuzzface, are they any good compared to the newer pedals?

>>61303582
the roland uses a magnetic tape to create the echo effect, the boss pedal is digital and meant to replicate the sound of the roland, to my knowledge
>>
>>61302957
I'd go for Gretsch. Their quality control this year has been fantastic and even their cheapest models are amazing guitars
>>

>>
>>61303823
my friends brother has it in his guitar. it has way to much output to sound nice i feel. even in a metal setting it has a nasty high end. i really don't like it
>>
>>61303872
the casino has p90s
>>
>>61303890
I'd be using it in a baritone tuned to drop g with oodles of fuzz, I'm not sure the strong highs would be an issue. Plus the Keith Merrow demo made it sound super chunky
>>
dd>>61303911
You want a 27 inch scale baritone for maximum surf, on the other hand if you use a shorter acale with heavy strings you can get something usable.
>>
>>61303986
high output pickups often smooth out fuzzes just fyi. i would probably only get the pickup if you are going for a high gain amp/shreddy tone. i dunno, even drop tuned the highs are sharp and brittle to me. i just dont like it
>>
>>61303716
i'm not a poorfag, just don't say you don't care about gear when you obviously do

Personally, I'd go with the Gretsch anyway/in general and roll off your volume knob (but probably keep the tones up) to achieve more surfy sound.

But see if they have one with Dynasonics, since those are single coils. Or with a little extra cash and/or know-how, replace one of the filtertrons with one and have the best of both Gretsch worlds.

Holy hell, offset guitars get posted way less than super strats, les pauls, and telecasters. Let people like what they want. People like low output pickups, and if you don't, don't use them.
