So I got this Peavey Milestone bass guitar today. I don't play much bass and I don't have an amp. Hoping for some bass amp recommendations. I'm on a pretty tight budget, what I'm really looking for is reliable brands and good-for-the-money models. I plan to check out craigslist but I need a frame of reference first. I'm not looking for anything huge, just something to jam with that works. Posted in previous thread but was mostly dead by then

Merry Xmas lads

Anyone care to look at my cover of This Charming Man by The Smiths?
>>
>>61260627
i played it at a gig once and it was pretty quiet desu
it sounded pretty well altough very scooped, so in a band context it might get lost because no mids and stuff... but generally GK makes good stuff yeah, and I only played on this particular one for an hour or so and didnt have time to play with the settings or anything. it might have been a smaller version with 10's maybe if they make anything like it but I am not sure.

oh and it was very light by the way, i liked that. i have a trace elliot myself haha
>>
>>61260682

>>
>>61260779
if you have money markbass is the small light and loud... if not then light cabs and a class D small head, think ampeg portaflex, the small GKs, tc electronic...
>>
Hypothetical;
You order a guitar off of a website, a website for a small music store halfway across the country, they have great reviews and give pro setups with each new guitar sold on the website. Your guitar comes in with multiple dead frets. You've never set up a guitar before.

What do?
>>
>>61260842
Pro set ups only if people bitch about it
>>
>>61260842
kek sorry your christmas was ruined

i wouldn't have ever bought the guitar like that in the first place.
>>
>>61260842
>Your guitar comes in with multiple dead frets.
There's a small time period in which you can send back your purchase in my country, if it's really dead frets and not a bad setup then I just ask for my money back.
>>
>>61260931
I dun goofed.
But they were the only place that I could find the specific guitar at, most places were sold out.

But now that I have it, aside from the dead frets, I'm kind of contemplating if I love it or not. I want to love strats... But I think it's just not for me. Too bright, too brittle, too sharp. Maybe I just need a compressor pedal?
>>
For the guy that asked in the previous thread, I'm playing an Ibanez RG into an iRig Pro into an iPad Air 2 running Bias and JamUp XT, with one of Tom Quayle's amp models and some of my own tweaks, 1/8" cable out from the iPad to the mic input on my PC.

Just got this today and am starting lessons within the next few days.
>>
>>61261300
Just use an electronic tuner to get all the open strings as accurately tuned as you can.

Then fret the 12th fret with your finger, a capo, or simply play the 12th fret natural harmonic and see if the tuner says it's sharp or flat. If it's flat, turn the screw on that string's saddle to push it closer toward the nut. If it's sharp, lengthen the string by turning the screw the other way. Do this until you get the 12th fret to accurate pitch or close enough on all the strings, then retune playing the open strings once more.

That's how I do it anyway.
>>
>>61260487

Is there any short scale guitars like a Mustang but with a 12 radius fretboard? Especially if there is any "Mini Mosrites" with P90s or SC.
A local jazz musician plays with his band at the bar I work at and we always chat gear and he said he started with a Strat but moved to Gibson after finding it hard to maneuver with a 9.5 and he moved to a 12 and it felt more natural. I went down to GC and played some Gibson and Greteches that I knew were 12 and it made quite a difference, I have pretty large hands so when chording or moving around they felt as if they were being jammed or pushed on each other until I switched to 12. Now I'm planning to buy another guitar with 12 radius fretboard and maybe short scale since I find it easier to handle

Hey guys, so I have three guitars, a telecaster (who stays on the neck pickup eternally because I hate super bright, sharp, twangy sounds), a semi-hollow Gibson, which I love the dark, mellow tones, and I just got a strat, but I'm finding the same problem I had with the telecaster's bridge pickup, only across the entire guitar. But, I love the way it plays... Would a compressor pedal solve all of the problems I face here and get me a great sound without the insane thwack that the strat gives my inner ear every time I touch a string?
>>
This threads always get filled up with questions, but I would answer them if I knew more t b h.

Anyways, will a Mustang II be enough to obtain a warm, cozy and mellow tone. It's the only affordable ;-;
>>
>>61264114
Yes a compressor would do good, but you should put a low output bridge pickup.

Together, it's more money, so maybe not that affordable... BUT you could get one now and one next paycheck and have a pretty top tier quality setup. When jamming you could just mic it to keep up with a drummer and keep the sweet sweet jangly tones

My (tube) amp and pedals normally, sound great and natural and make me want to play, but it's exactly the opposite in my bedroom. My ears actually hurt right now. Is there a mental explanation or are some rooms just plain horrible for acoustics?

By Orange Micro Terror, do you mean only the amp head and get the other cab. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008BTTQI4/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687742&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00C9JLIWO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=02K63ZZGD0SW8V99EQH1

Funny, recently I was offered a Orange Micro Terror and its corresponding cab, but some anons suggested to not get it, as it's not proper for mellow tones.

Some presents from this year but you're probably most interested in the pedal. Haven't played with it much yet and I have no idea how to use delay but at least it sounds heavenly.

>>
>>61265894
thanks, I'll try out Scott's website and that doesn't work for me i'll consider shelling out for Stu Hamm.

>>
>>61265829
They "compress".
Reduce the highs, balance the lows, mellow the sound.

Or at least that's what I'm assuming, so I'm assuming it would mellow out my strat.
>>
>>61266161
Just turn down the tone knob if you want to get rid of highs, there's no real need for a compressor.
>>
>>61266186
That's what I thought too
>>
>>61265829
they can make things sound louder without actually being, even out louder and softer playing, limit peaks, some other stuff that is hard to describe aka a bunch of stuff I don't know.

Distorted guitar is already really compressed coming out of an amp. You can see the wave forms are solid bars when recording. So players that play with some clean are the ones that generally benefit more.
>>
>>61263945
That's the old SG-Z or whatever, right? I've only over played one but I fell in love, the closest I've ever played to it in terms of quality with similar configuration is the Chuck Schuldiner Stealth, but I liked the neck on the Gibson better.
>>
>>61266186
or roll a little volume. Was thinking that would edge off a little volume and tone.
>>
>>61266161
I thought they compressed volume, to make your signal have a more uniform attack.
>>
>>61266186
That doesn't do nearly enough..
>>
>>61264213
if you want mellow tones there's nothing more mellow than a polytone minibrute amp. You can get them dirt cheap too. Because only jazz guys use them and they're even kind of unhip among jazz players now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLk1kJQWNPw
>>
>>61266186
compressors do more than just that. country players kind of turned compressors into a meme, that standard telecaster type of sound everyone associates with country music is due to compressor pedals, they almost use them as like an overdrive for that quakcy type of pick attack
>>
Does anyone know the name of the blues pedal that Lee from Andertons has been raving about?
>>
>>61265470
Yes. Some rooms are really bad for acoustics, especially bass build up, echo, muddiness.

Could be your amp is too loud, things that are too loud in a small area sound bad.

Could be your amp is too low, and some tube amps sound really bad turned down.
>>
Didn't see anything in the sticky and I'm sure this gets asked a lot but I was wondering what a good starter electric guitar would be (so something fairly cheap).

I'm not very knowledgeable about guitars and have been learning with an epiphone acoustic for a while but I'm wanting to move to an electric guitar.

seeing as you're a beginner, get a hardtail guitar, don't get a guitar with a tremolo. keep it simple.

i'd say get a squier telecaster, you can get them for like $150-200. try them out though, don't just order it online. telecasters are pretty difficult guitars to truly fuck up in terms of manufacturing, because they are very simplistic designs.

Nah the pedal power is designed so you can run power from an isolated source to each pedal. The Pedal Power 2 is nice, eight isolated outputs.

Daisy Chaining often introduces unwanted noise, especially with digital pedals.
>>
>>61267908
No no I know how the pedal power works, I just didn't know what order I should put my pedals in. What other options do I have besides just daisy chaining them?
>>
>>61267779
yes you just daisy chain them together. there's some "rules" to where the pedals should go to make them sound good though, look up "guitar signal chain" on google and read some articles.

start with the basic types of pedals first, don't get weird ass crazy effects until you get the basic pedals down, everything is built on your "basic" set of pedals. i consider the basic pedals - overdrive, distortion, fuzz, delay, tuner, power supply for the pedals (the power is optional, you can just use batteries if you want to save money).

that right there if you get good pedals is probably $500, not including the pedalboard you want to put the pedals on, and add onto that another $100-$200 for the pedal power supply if you want that.

>>
>>61267779
Basically, you can do a lot of things with effects. Some guys use pedals straight through from one to another. Some guys use stereo pedals later in the line and feed 2 amps(stereo sweeping phaser, ping pong delays). So guys have 2 lines on their boards, one feeding the front, one in an amps effect loops(some guys have 2 boards even). Some pedals have effect loops built into them so. Some guys have switching built into the board and hardly actually use the switches on the pedals, where you hit one switch on a board and it turns on a chain with 3 effects, hit another and only 1 of the previous effects stays active while a different one becomes active.

Seriously, the only limits you have as far as how to chain your pedals are budget and/or technical prowess.

The most basic, and what most people start with and continue to use in one pedal into the next and so on. There's a "standard" way to order them, that you can find online, but it all comes down to what sounds good for you.
The 3 things I ALWAYS do, volume pedal first, wah second, delay last. Everything else is in the middle.
>>
>>61267989
The pedals in the pic are the ones I own, just never had them all in the same setup. None of these are any good in an FX loop right? That'd for delay and reverb right?
>>
>>61268067
Depends, do you like them in the effects loop, or do you like them in front. Try both, might work better for either, depending on the amp, playing style, and delay/reverb. Some amps sound awful with anything in the loop, and some amps don't have loops, but people still use delays with them and get excellent results
>>
>>61267026
freakish blues
>>
>>61268067
some delays work better in the loop, some don't. analogue delays usually sound better just straight into the amp. digital delays apparently sound better in the loop, but i personally never tried a digital delay so i don't know. i know steve vai does that though - digital delay into the loop - but he also uses 2 delays set at different times going into two different amps to give a stereo effect.

you have some pretty heavy distorted sounds that probably aren't going to work well together, but as long as you don't use them stacked together (both turned on at the same time), i guess you'll be fine.

what are you looking to get? just a power supply and cords to put them together?
>>
>>61268193
I found it; it's the tone city king of blues
>>
>>61268067
Actually, looking at your pic, I wouldn't put any of those in the fx loop, except the noise suppressor, look up the boss ns x wiring for that. Heard good things about it, but I haven't needed a noise suppressor in some years.

I wouldn't put those the others in there because the effects send is after the preamp/tone shaping section, so you wouldn't be able to clock the eq to affect the harshness they can create. Some people use them there though.

>>
>>61268496
the only gain stacks that usually work are fuzz+overdrive or distortion+overdrive

the overdrive, as long as it isn't set with the distortion completely up, will kick those pedals up a bit and you can get a lead tone out of it. davild gilmour used to do stuff like that
>>
>>61268607
I did notice that putting that shitty marshall pedal with minimal gain on the OD channel and low contour in front of the big muff helped it cut through a bit, if that's what youre getting at.
>>
>>61268707
yea, i do it with my fuzz pedal all the time, it's basically like eq'ing a fuzz to get rid of the mud and give it a little more bite
>>
>>61268739
Now would it be better to throw the philosophers tone in front of a fuzz pedal or after? It's cool to use for some Earth-ish drone but trying to find a way to put mix it into my doom sound. I'm pretty much sitting on the floor moving pedals around as I read responses so throw any suggestions at me
>>
>>61268810
i've never tried it, but i'm watching the demo on youtube right now

cool pedal but it's doing two things at once, which makes it kind of a problem. compressors are usually put before distortion boxes, but that pedal is a compressor and has a bit of overdrive to it.

what i've found with mixing around pedals is that fuzz boxes work best when it's going into an overdrive, so basically guitar->fuzz->overdrive->amp. it makes the fuzz sound controllable and it gives a nice warm sound before it hits the overdrive which then boosts up and eqs it a bit. if you do it the other way around with an overdrive going into a fuzz, when you kick the fuzz up it sounds way too muddy (for me) and is less controllable.

i'd personally put that pedal before the fuzz, so guitar->philsophers->fuzz->to amp.
>>
>>61268957
I don't usually put the grit on that past 9 o'clock so I think putting it before like you said will probably work out well.

I'll probably put a pic or a quick video on here if I buy a board tomorrow and get a layout and see if I can get some more feedback. Thanks to you guys who put up with some of my noob questions
>>
>>61269136
yea that's what i was figuring, it seems to be more of a compressor pedal than a drive pedal, so before a fuzz is probably your best bet. the other way around will probably sound weird

Ive been a pretty big poor-o with fx but I'm buying some with xmas money now. Is an overdrive necessary if I'm getting a fuzz or would that be redundant?

They are two different things.

how do I play outside like this piano?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sCY987VPsI

or like Holdsworth?

I heard you're suppposed to play "wrong notes" on certain beats but land on good notes so I'll try and go out of key and more or less play random chromatic/madeup scales but this piano guy and Allan Holdsworth can noodle lines for the entirety of the song and still sound good.

What do?
>>
>>61269442
for low action you need very level frets and a properly set truss rod.

even with perfectly level frets, with a low action you need to pick very lightly so you don't get excessive buzzing. that's just the natural of the instrument, the lower you go, the more buzzing you will get so you need to compensate with your picking.
>>
>>61269855
playing 'outside' is very difficult to make sound good, you really need to know what you're doing

holdsworth doesn't just aimlessly noodle. have you ever watched any of his lesson videos or anything? the man has a literal phone book sized scale and chord book that he wrote for himself. he's absolutely insane.

he has come up with scales that don't resolve until the third octave.

that is extremely, extremely advanced stuff.
>>
>>61269905

Merry christmas guys, new setup photo with the new MBC-1. Honestly one of the best guitars I've played, definitely feels like a much higher quality model - albeit with lower tier pickups. That's easily fixable though.

>>
>>61272408
Quick answer is get a copy of the Real Book. That's always a good place to start. If you're looking to actually play jazz and improvise along with other players you're going to have to invest a lot of time into music theory and applying all of those rules to the guitar. On top of your basic pentatonic and blues scales you're going to have to learn all 7 modal scales and how to play them in every key etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SBvAVv29XY - Also learn donna lee, there are tabs for it and if you can get it up to speed it feels great shredding face with some good jazz licks.

Ok thank you. I've been playing an accoustic for about a year now. I've been saving up money for almost a half of a year and I have roughly $1700 to spend on a electric guitar and amp. I am going to be starting a band with my friends which will be powerviolence but I'm interested in playing skramz and metal (particularly sludge and grind) down the line. I have asked this before in different places a while ago and have general ideas of what I want, but no specific models.

This will be for recording and possibly playing live down the line. I've been looking at either a high quality epiphone sg/cheaper gibson sg with either a high quality marshall amp, a laney ironheart combo, or maybe something better wit the amp.

Thank you for any good reccs.

>Yes USD sorry I should've clarified.
No problem man, most people assume USD but you're in Aussie prime time at the moment.

So, sludge, grind and power violence are the big three? What tuning do you play in. Have any example bands that are in the ball park of what you want?

Guitar wise, head to a store and try everything you like. Whether you can afford it or not. Good thing with those styles of music is you can really use anything you want.

Amp wise, a lot will come down to personal preference, the cheapest of the two you mentioned would be a Marshall. Something like a JCM2000 DSL50 (old not new)

One last question: If I can throw some money in for a distortion pedal, what will be good/essential/intersting ones to use for the genres that I am intersted in? As I said I will first be playing a powerviolence band however I am interested in playing skramz, sludge, grind, and possibly stoner.
>>
>>61273909
Something like a tube screamer to boost would be invaluable for grind.

Apparently it's some kind of custom Jazzmaster-style guitar made by Psychederhythm.

I haven't gotten down to experimenting with tunings yet, even though I should soon.
Skramz is probably in there as well, maybe switch that out with grind and put it in my number 2 spot.

Bands in the ball park for the powerviolence will be Charles Bronson and Spazz.

Skramz will be my number two and in terms of that I'd say Pg. 99 and Orchid are big influences there.

With sludge and grind I'd say sound influences would be early Pig Destroyer, Acid Bath, and Eyehategod.

I also wanted to mix the skramz with industrial, but that's something for another day.

Damn japs and their nice cheapass customs
>>
Nowadays, I don't even differentiate rock music by genre anymore. I go by the tuning, and the amount of gain used.

Anyone feels the same way?

What?

Skramz is sort of like the more punk equivalent of D-Beat isn't it? I can't comment on that too much, won't pretend I'm really familiar with the genre.

As for sludge and grind. Pig Destroyer, Acid Bath, and Eyehategod. Hmm. They're all downtuned, think Pig Destroyer is C and Drop A#, Acid Bath is C, and Eyehategod id D and Drop C.

Usually I'd recommend a 25.5" over a short scale for that, but for sludge the short scales can really sound awesome. Anything in that camp (SG, Les Paul, Explorer) would work. I'd also look at some ESP and Ibanez if you can. The punk stuff should be attainable with almost anything.

I'd go and play everything you can. Almost anything should be able to get you those sounds. Only thing I'd say is go for Humbuckers over Single Coils.

As for amplifiers, >>61273954 could work, TS-9 on the green channel is really mean. My pick would be a JCM800 2203, but you could probably find a JCM2000 DSL50 for less money.

Cabinet wise unless there's a cheaper brand available to you like Avatar, a used Marshall 1960AV/BV would be the way to go. I wouldn't use an A or B though, G12T-75s aren't great for sludge.

>>61274028
Yeah, compare it to what guys in the US charge for
>>
>>61273963
In what world is that cheap? Moreover, it's barely custom! You badly need to get over to >>>/diy/ or at least google. You can easily get that setup for...well, a shitload less anyways. Not sure about the availability of jazz master bodies, but even if you started from a squire and replaced literally everything but the body, it'd be cheaper. Not to mention your headstock wouldn't be scribbled all over.

>25.5
>LP, SG, explorer
I might have read that wrong, please clarify.
>>
>>61273888
I don't see what is so hard about it I mean it has fret lines so it's not really that different.

>>61274120
>Usually I'd recommend a 25.5" over a short scale for that, but for sludge the short scales can really sound awesome.
That's one line before I mentioned the 24.75" instruments.

Scott's bass has a video on fretless bass but it might just be him trying to sell his signature model. Anyways it has a couple tips so check it out. And do give it a setup and basic intonation.
>>
>>61274073
I knew it would require me to downtune generally, and I've played acid bath and knew they were drop C, but I didn't go look for specific tunings in all of these. I know to look for humbuckers over single coils as well.

Funnily enough I was looking exactly at the TS-9 while you were talking about it.

As for the amplifiers I might just go for the 6505 combo for the cash. Though those marshall separate heads/cabinets are interesting.

If this could help, this song pretty much shows a good amount of the skramz style I'm interested in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3k-DdvQuuw

An electro harmonix reverb, a mooer lofi pedal and a behringer vibrato which was broken before I even tried it

Fucking pissed off now
>>
Got an SSS American Standard Strat. I like it a lot so far, my only other decent guitar being a Les Paul. It plays well with my Twin Reverb and the neck has got a flame thing going on. Played it for a Christmas eve set. Not a lot of hum either. Haven't tried the trem system out though and it's not the color I was expecting. It's the 3 color burst. Any advice on what to expect with tone with my new axe?
>>
>>61274159
>I've played acid bath and knew they were drop C
C Standard, not Drop C.
>6505 combo for the cash
If you go that right get a 5150 or 6505 2x12 combo. The 1x12 is made in China and isn't made nearly as well. Also keep in mind the stock speakers in the combos aren't a great match for the amplifier. You'll want to swap it to a Vintage 30 or C90 later most likely. Justt keep in mind they're very loud combos.

Similar money could possibly get you a JCM2000 or JCM900 SL-X with a cabinet as well.

Luckily, those amplifiers have totally different voicing. So it shouldn't be hard to see which you prefer. The Peavey's gain structure is more saturated, boosting the green would be the way to go for sludge though. Marshalls don't usually have as much gain, but it's drier and equally as mid-focused.

Neither will have trouble in a mix.

They were mentioned after the line >>61274143 that anon pointed out. Are you reading my posts backwards or something?

>C standard, not Drop C.
Yeah sorry about that, I know it isn't drop C, I just meant generally would require dropping the tuning down.

It's also 5 am where I live and I'm super tired and am doing last minute research lel.

Thanks man, I'll check them all out and remember to replace the speakers ASAP.
>>
>>61274168
I did see some basic specs, but nothing that seemed impressive, maybe you could point something out that is expensive to produce? I only saw a normal guitar. I mean, It's got a custom bridge and pickups? Am I missing something?
