Spring Heel Jack - Amassed (2002)
>avant-garde jazz
This is really fucking cool. I get a bit of a more loose and abstract Necks vibe from this. And its real loose and abstract. Some tracks just freak out in such a perfect manner and /that's/ what I seek in modern jazz music. Takes a bit to get going, the opening tracks are a bit eh, but overall its a great record.

Blut aus Nord - Ultima Thulée (1995)
>atmospheric black metal, black metal
This album embodies winter in every single form. The cold, repetetive black metal parts, the icy synth parts, they're all winter as fuck. And its nice, I certainly like this album to a degree. But the repetition does kinda kill it, and the transitions between the BM bits and the synth bits are disjointed. And the synth bits are kinda cheesy, but I love that aspect of dungeon synth.

C-Schulz & F.X. Randomiz - Das Ohr am Gleis
>>61126466
It's really good, but one of the best verses was "sung" by a robotic text to speech voice, and I didn't like it at all. I get that's the point, but it bordered on cheesy and wasn't enjoyable.
However, at this point that's my only gripe. It's still a fantastic album with amazing atmosphere, beats, lyrics, vocals... it's all there. He did not disappoint.
Most songs that actually contain LUM rapping are separated by long ambient/noise stretches, which kinda reminded me of Enter The Void. There are similar themes too. A lot about alienation in the age of technology and the feeling of isolation.
It may be too early to say, but I think it's better than Mista Thug Isolation. It's amazingly cohesive and doesn't rely on loops or cheesy gansta rap quasi-parody bullshit. Every song feels meaningful, and he's not trying to make something infectious or catchy like he has in the past.
This shit is UGLY. In fact, I had to check that I hadn't accidentally shuffled into Merzbow at one point.
Check it out.

>Hoover - The Lurid Transversal of Route 7
I'm not gonna lie: this sounds like Slint and Fugazi. A lot like Slint and Fugazi.
And that's not automatically a bad thing, you know: here the band actually manages to create a nice mixture, with dissonant, very angular riffs and a nice dose of hardcore angst.
But that's also where the problem lays. The band decided to maintain this style for all the record, and for me an hour of the same stuff is too much to take, so I got bored pretty quickly.
Don't get me wrong, this album is full of original ideas and the songwriting has some interesting moments in every song, plus the songs' structures are almost always different. I really liked how this album sounded on first listen, but again, its lack of different styles was really off-putting.
Hell, even Rites Of Spring had this exact same problem, but they still managed to insert some songs that were different in terms of mood and writing.
I don't know, maybe I will come back to this, but only for a couple of songs every time.

Hey man, didn't you make a tourney that one time, what happened with that?
>LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
James Murphy has always been good in doing two things: writing long songs with complex layering and creating moving and funky grooves, and this record is no exception.
Every track has a powerful rhythmic section, with tight drums and a smooth bass, and it's guaranteed that it will make you move somehow. The only song that is under five minutes long is "Drunk Girls", but that doesn't mean that it isn't as complex as the others; every track brings on the table an impressive amount of musical instruments, that are slowly layered one upon another creating amazing wall of sounds and impressive crescendos.
Oh wait, I forgot that he can adapt himself to so many different styles, making almost all of them extremely enjoyable: from the dissonance and chaos of "One Touch" we go to the beautiful sadness of my favorite song here: "All I Want", and then to the great synthpoppiness of "I Can Change". "Dance Yrself Clean" uses its dynamics in the best way possible, making it an amazing opening track, and "Drunk Girls" is more punk than any other track. "You Wanted a Hit" is disillusioned in both the lyrics and the instrumentation, making it a great, moody jam.
Sadly this doesn't really work well on all the tracks: "Pow Pow" and "Somebody's Calling Me" sound like Murphy just wanted to throw some sounds at random to experiment, without caring where at all about where the tracks where going.
While I was reading this review I noticed that is pretty reductive to affermate that James Murphy has always been good in doing two things: writing long songs with complex layering and creating moving and funky grooves.
Let's say that he has always been good in writing songs.

>>61135266
hi friend
So I listened to this.
First of all, it reminded me of VCN a lot. It's the colorful psychedelia probably. However, it's more rooted in the whole dream pop direction. A lot of pretty synth arpeggi appearing here and there, great bass-powered straights too. The vocals from Sato where usually drenched in reverb and complimented the instrumental counterpart.
I think the best thing about the track is the production. It lets each single individual instrument stand out regardless of how crowded or reverb-soaked the picture seems.
It was very pleasant and well-executed. I liked it.

Lil Ugly Mane - Oblivion Access (2015)
>abstract hip hop, experimental hip hop
Lil Ugly Mane finally lives up to his name by making the ugliest hip hop album of all time. Where on other releases he seems somewhat chill, maybe a bit ironic, he's got a fucking fire in his belly on this album, making it probably the angriest sounding hip hop album I've ever heard (fuck off DG). The major complaint I have with this album is that the production isn't as unique as it is on something like Third Side of Tape or the Uneven Compromise EP. Its still great, but its a bit more grounded and in the realm of normal hip hop. And nothing on here bangs as much as something like "On Doing an Evil Deed Blues". "Slugs" is the best track here, by the way.
3.0+
Grimes - Art Angels (2015)
>electropop, synthpop
Haha wow, it does suck! The only experience I have with Grimes' music is that I actually really like "Oblivion", so it was a bit shocking to hear this be so—not good, basically. A few good melodies (namely "Flesh Without Blood" and "Realiti") sneak their way through, but the rest is just uninspired landfill pop. And somehow, despite supposedly being self produced by Grimes herself, it sounds utterly overproduced, which is especially apparent on the reworking of "Realiti", which in its demo form is pretty spectacular, but in its album form its just uninspired and dull.

Björk - Vulnicura (2015)
>art pop
Björk on definite autopilot. Her vocals are shockingly vanilla, and honestly, what more do you want in a Björk release than batshit crazy vocals? The string arrangements aren't anything to write home about either, they're pretty, sure, but they're not memorable at all. I do have to commend the drum machines on this album, sometimes the strings meld with the drums in a very fantastic way ("Quicksand") and these are my favorite moments on the album.

Hey guys, if you get the chance listen to this album.
It's definitely not jazz-rock, it's jazz-fusion, but I liked every track on this thing. It's nice and easy with just enough fun textures to put it a step above the usual jazz-fusion fare of the late 70s. It's fairly strong in its start and finish.
>Mfw listening to ESG and Fat Pat for the first time
This one just missed being a great album for me. There's a lot of fun stuff on here though, but I warn you that the second half has that... funk thing going on. But this is definitely a step in the right direction of what I'm looking for - good 80s prog that uses synths right. Only the last track wasn't that interesting to me.

Great work! It's like Mahavishnu Orchestra, but better. "Clouds" is a dark horse for track of the year.
Pierrot Lunaire was decent, but didn't really do much for me. I don't think I'm a huge fan of the kind of singing featured in this type of music. I really don't get anything out of it, and it distracts from the rest of the music, as it really is prominently featured.
Apparently this was a revolutionary piece of music, though, so I'm glad I checked it out.

Deerhunter - Fading Frontier
I don’t think india rock this low testosterone has been released since the 2000s. Probably a step up from Monomania, but a lot of isolation and sadness we had on Microcastle and Halcyon Digest is lost here. It sounds kind of like they’ve been listening to a lot of Ducktails and Mac Demarco. Reverb-y acoustic guitars and occasional synth riffs. I’m a sucker for that sound, but the style doesn’t fit the kind of music Deerhunter is good at making. Snakeskin was surprisingly enjoyable.

The Microphones - Mount Eerie
Sonic Youth - Murray Street
Sufjan Stevens - Enjoy Your Rabbit
Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun
The Residents - Demons Dance Alone

How lazy of you for not enabling my laziness.
>>61145454
i'm pretty lazy
also i think you should make the chart for being so rude
>>61145501
N E V E R
(not really though, I'll make it while I listen to it)
>>61145518
you're a cool guy
>>61145551
I know.
I prepared myself six albums to listen to at work and they were all mediocre. Fuck. No more jazz-fusion, it's too predictable for me at this point.
>>61145699
>No more jazz-fusion
Jazz fusion is confirmed for shit-tier genre. Like, five good albums in the entire genre and the rest is boring garbage.
Good pick lad.
>>61145903
I liked the sub-genre at first, but the more you listen to, you realize that pretty much everyone did the same thing at the same time. It's like they bank on the hope that you discover this "different" sounding jazz band and that you're happy with just that and don't listen any further. At least with jazz-rock and prog there's a LITTLE more variety.

>>61145281
Thanks lads
Since it looks like Australians can't post threads because mods are racist fuckings cunts:
Is there any genre or song with all the seriousness of a driving techno rythm, like a heavy dark bass, and then midway through there's some sort of extremely poppy vocals or power melody or synth lead that contrasts really heavily with the bass overlaid on top. Sort of like vaporwave sample music but with techno and pop.
I don't know what this music would sound like but I want to listen to it. Please link anything similar.
>Taspo - 長寿命 – LONG LIFE
>vaporwave
Trap influence vaporwave, has a decent sound. very light and simple in design. Kind of forgettable.
>チェスマスター - 非実体
>vaporwave, ambient
Future sounds and robot vibes, another slightly above an ok experience.
going to work on a new major chord
CM7#11
with 4 shapes over the board
I tried Dirty Beaches, I liked it. No way would I let him near our Jazz Singer, tho.
um... plough through theory. think about next song arrangement. er...really happy with my new Deicide t-shirt and nude poses.
bit musickd out really, I fancy some Nancy Sinatra
Napalm Death - Apex Predator - Easy Meat (2015)
>grindcore
Pretty solid grind. A /lot/ more overproduced and melodic than I'd like my grind, but the pure, raw grindcore/deathgrind tracks are pretty nice. But then there's the more death metal tracks that take up a fair amount of the album which are pretty poor. Really spotty overall, but the good tracks are pretty dang good.
2.5-
>>61148363
oh I'd go to a 3.5,
Vince Staples was good, not much to say about it. Very west coast chill hip hop, the hype around it was understandable. Surprised that this isn't more popular outside of indie circles.
Also listened to Ys for the first time to prepare for Divers. Definitely a great album, I may listen to Have One On Me tomorrow as well. I'm FEELIN IT.
Bumpppp.
gratuitous attention whore selfie goodnight bump
gotta get my beauty rest for a day of 2015 tomorrow
Merzbow- Merzbeat
I thought this was really interesting
I've never listened to a noise LP before, but this was a pretty good introduction to the genre imo
I know that a lot of people don't like how the beats are super generic sounding, but I kinda liked that because it brought a lot more attention to the noise
>>61150483
camman boi, if you want to get into noise you gotta like totally just go for it. None o' this panzie-arse merzbeat hooplah.
>>61151035
i agree tee bee haich
probably listen to that live at the cccp set or 1930 tomorrow
>>61151087
1930 is good, I haven't heard cccp. And I really think you should try Pulse Demon, it gets hate 'cause it was memed a bunch but it's a pretty good album. Well I think it's good. It's intense compared to Merzbeat or 1930, but if you want something that'll get your blood pumping then you'll likely enjoy it.
>>61134625
Patience fucker. Imma start tomorrow
>>61150483
>>61151467
Also fun science fact: Pulse Demon is pretty good and Merzbeat kinda sucks.
Is Hybrid Noisebloom meant to be a good Merzbow album?
Only listened to that and Pulse Demon, I think I might just not "get" him, they're listenable but there's nothing particularly exciting going on.
Just saw Royal Trux in NYC at Webster Hall, with Blues Control opening. Pretty good show.
>>61151754
Hybrid Noisebloom is ok.
Try Amlux and Aqua Necromancer.
>>61151794
>Royal Trux is an American alternative rock band from 1987 to 2001,
>to 2001
wow liar
>>61151754
>>61151823
What about Venerology? Unshakably unsettling listening.
>>61151920
Ye das a good one, too.
i can't sleep of get my stomach to settle so I'm looking for top-tier trad folk recordings. Listening to Peruvian Harp and Mandolin for the first time and it's quite good so far. Reminds me of a less melodic sort of irish music but that could just be instrumentation talking.
Open to suggestions. The dirtier the recording quality, the better.
goodnight bump.
>>61146446
Glad you liked it pal.

>Sufjan Stevens - Noel. Song for Christmas Vol. I
This is the first of five EPs of Christmas music by our favorite indie folk artist: Sufjan Stevens.
For me, except for the lyrics, this didn't feel like some nice Christmas jams to dance to under a mistletoe or something, but more like some standard indie-folk that's pretty heavy on banjos. Remember that's not a bad thing.
There's not really that much to write home about: most of the tracks, despite being really nice, soft and relaxing, sound similar, but never in a boring way. I enjoyed the "classic rock guitars" (for the lack of a better name) that are present on this: their sound is really smooth, and they had a lot to the comfortable vibe.
Perhaps the best moment here is the little crescendos and resolution in "O Come O Come Emmanuel": the track is very well structured, so when the drums kick in it makes for a satisfactory moment. Also worth hearing is the track "It's Christmas! Let's Be Glad!" that is a very nice up-tempo jam, very funny and cute. Maybe too cute.
Yes, this record is cheesy, but not that much, and this cheese didn't really bothered me, since I think it adds to the Christmas atmosphere.
7/10
Oblivion Access next. Hypehypehypehype
>>61153610
Forgot the useless pic
Jim O'Rourke - Bad Timing
>7
Nice chamber acoustic, had very distinct and powerful emotion at parts. The album tended to drag on a segment for more than best welcomed, luckily it's not grating and still relaxable, which is a shame cause the guitar work is pretty much perfect. Though being mostly guitar focused is a downside in it's self for the length, more is wanted at times, luckily there's other instruments that come in that really satisfy when they do; probably a side effect from dragging segments.
>>61153690
*tends to drag on some segments
>>61153690
in the end the good heavily overrides the bad with how good the good is.
What are you all doing this lovely, almost christmas, day? I just moved into a temporary apartment because my own is being de-molded and it's taking longer than expected (of course), so today i'm going to settle in here.
Also i'm listening to Shirley Collins' The Power of the True Love Knot.

Eating spicy Chinese food for breakfast and thinking about what music I should grab with me to Vienna.

Oxbow's discog bruh
>>61154377
Listening to the listenalong, it's pretty neat so far.
After that, im planning to keep going with the 2015 chart and maybe finish the Star Wars movies even though I already went to see The Force Awakens
>>61154519
You know I've been listening to the Narcotic Story a lot in the past couple of days when walking my dog. I think I'll download some.
>>61154534
Do you seriously download music?
What are you? A fucking degenerate?
>>61154548
yes
>>61154377
memeing, preparing for a day of not doing shit, working on a duster ripoff track and being pissed at myself for forgetting to bring my recorder
>>61155121
The version i uploaded includes 4 bonus tracks (in the middle of the album for some reason), and it would probably flow better without them.
>>61140284
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
Nirvana - In Utero
Depeche Mode - Violator
any of these?
>>61143277
what did you expect then?

exactly, so I can't see how someone who liked ANH hates TFA

>>61156999
oh shit I forgot to add that one to the chart, I'll make sure to hear it
>>61157104
Nah, but it's one of favouritess from 2015 too
What's good?
>Sun City Girls - Valentines from Matahari
SCG show their diversity once more, this time creating a no-fi improv rock album. The (lack of) recording quality is a double-edged sword, both adding a certain style to the songs and removing some of the potential it has. In any case, the actual songs here are rather good, ranging from songs with tight Arabic melodies ("Sev Acher") to completely unhinged freeform noise rock ("Way Over the Rainbow"). Imagine SCG trying to be The Dead C, with less bad vocals (barely any vocals desu). Overall cool, despite how lo-fi it is. 7/10
>Nurse With Wound - Soliloquy for Lilith
Very relaxing ambient drones resulting from malfunctioning equipment, allegedly. It's a fine listen, but it consists of 6 17-minute tracks and every track is very repetitive. Of course, it is drone, but it could have been shorter. As it stands it's most definitely good, but nothing that blows me away or mesmerizes me like the best drone music out there does. 7/10
>Sir Richard Bishop - Fingering the Devil
Spanish primitivism! Basically just masterful acoustic guitar playing, not as diverse as While My Guitar Violently Bleeds, but more consistent. 7.5/10
>Head of David - Dustbowl
Head of David takes a cool industrial desert rock style, then run it into the ground for 15 tracks. Despite this, it's not that bad of an album and I'd actually give it something like a 6 if it weren't for one of the worst production jobs Steve Albini has ever done. He takes out all the noise and power in an album that is meant to be noisy and powerful. People who praise Albini for his production must be joking, he really made this album and Goat by The Jesus Lizard a lot less interesting. 5/10
>Curse of the Golden Vampire - Mass Destruction
Grindcore with digital noise instead of guitar overload. Too repetitive to be great, but stupid and aggressive enough to be perfect to play when you're angry. 7/10 (ignore the 7.5 on the chart)
>>61157566
>V/A - Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk and Pop Music Vol. 1
Fun collection of all kinds of pop songs, usually with pretty bad audio quality but whatever. Sadly it's also very hit and miss, with some songs being entirely forgettable. I find it hard to really say much more about this record, it's mostly just old asian pop songs, quite different from western pop. It's a fun listen and I would definitely check it out if I were you, it's just not the greatest thing ever as an album. 6.5/10
>>61157313
Mahler is pretty great
>>61157566
nice chart you've got there terminus
>>61157605
True.
So I've finally relistened to Oblivion Access and I really like it, but I want to give it a proper review with a proper score when I have the occasion to analyze the extremely bleak lyrics better.
What's /musicblog/ doing?
>>61157669
I was unfortunately a bit underwhelmed by Oblivion Access even if I did enjoy it more than Third Side Of Tape. I'll probably give it another shot sometime soon though. What's your opinion on it?
>>61157669
Waiting for Oblivion Access to finish downloading actually. What a coincidence!
Listening to whatever while I'm waiting. Coil atm.
>>61157695
It's the most depressing rap record that I've ever listened to, basically.
I would give the instruments a 9/10, will check the lyrics out very soon.
>>61157807
>instruments
>instrumentals*
Also broken english
Dots & Loops started off pretty decent but man does it drag.
time to get this chart done already, I have had a new one waiting in the wings for a while now. Which of the remaining albums should I do first?
