>Bodychoke- Cold River Songs

Seriously disappointed with this thing. The concept of it- Sutcliffe Jugend playing introspective noise rock with a cello - sounded super cool, but this is just a chore. It's pretty embarrassing the way Tomkins tries to sound menacing- usually I enjoy that kind of stuff, but the music isn't really noisy or brutal enough to back it up. The whole thing just sounds really limp and ineffectual.

There's some cool moments, but this does not kick anywhere as much ass as it needs to. Shame, because this could have been really, really cool. 5/10.

Listened to this and I loved Julianne Baird's soprano performances. I'm starting to notice how much variety Bach's pieces feature after dissecting each movement of 140. Especially the opening one where the vocalists established some interesting rhythmic polyphony + there were a lot of things going on in the orchestral section too.

The coordination between the text and the music is also very interesting. Things like the dialogues between soul and Jesus in the aria duet (140, 6th movement) establishes an image of what each voice represents based off the performers.

I dig it. I probably should look into more Bach cantatas after I'm done with Karmien's spoonfeeding. teebeehaich I'd love to go through the entire Bach oeuvre some time in the future. I guess that's going to my boxset list.

8/10 for now.

Vince Guaraldi's "In Person" is a relaxing jazz album with some nice piano and drums and some bass that is so low in the mix it might as well not be there.

It jams a bit, it's got some swing, you know how jazz goes. It is an exceptionally good, really mostly entirely normal jazz album. It takes no steps in any notably interesting directions. There is no sense of adventure here.

Still, the playing is quite fine.

6/10, if the production quality was better I'd probably bring it to a 7.

There's nice avant-garde rhythms and interesting changes and there's beautiful moody pieces. Blake's playing is great on either, and the interplay with the rest of the ensemble is good as well.
Nice imagery, I'm looking forward to listening to it again.

Gotta listen to La Monte Young too to make up my mind.

>Neutral Milk Hotel - Invent Yourself a Shortcake
This was pretty interesting, it's very different to the later NMH releases. It reminds me a lot of Daniel Johnston, since it's also got that really lo-fi sound, but not as good. There's some early versions of later NMH tracks (King of Carrot Flowers pt3, Tuesday Moon) which were really good, but other than that, there's not much to see here.

>Bjork - Vespertine
Possibly my favorite Bjork album from the few that I've heard. I don't really have much to say about this one, it's just a very solid album.

>Boris - Feedbacker
I haven't listened to Boris previously so this was quite an enjoyable experience. From what I've seen, most of their albums have different musical styles, so what should I check next?

depends, do you want more of the same or something entirely different?
for more slow, droney heaviness, go for Amplifier Worship and Absolutego.
for noisy, fast stoner rock go for Pink and Akuma no Uta.
Flood if you want something mellow-ish.

>>61078188
No real order to my chart, but generally top left is better than bottom right. I still have to go back and listen to a lot more stuff anyway.

I think Music for Church Cleaners counts for 2015 because it adds new material, and reworks most of the songs from the 2012 edition.

Also, I really don't get all the hate for TPAB. Sure it's probably overrated, but it's still good. Can somebody who hates this album intelligibly articulate why exactly they hate it?

hey four reviews!

Max Roach - We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite (1961)
>avant-garde jazz

I wish I liked this a lot more than I did. Abbey Lincoln's singing is phenomenal, but I guess I'm just not all too impressed with the band's performance, save for Roach (of course) and Olatunji. Still definitely a good album, but I guess I just like different kinds of jazz.

3.0

Kazumoto Endo - While You Were Out (1999)
>harsh noise

"Itabashi Girl" is the pinnacle of noise. Noise + pop samples = holy fucking yes more please. The use of dynamics on this album is great, certainly something to listen to if yr just getting into noise, the cutting and pasting of sound is admirable. Drags in the second half with the more purely noise stuff, but still an enjoyable listen.

3.0+

Γιάννης Αγγελάkας & Νίkος Βελιώτης - Οι ανάσες των λύkων (2005)
>avant-folk

Avant-folk reminiscent of a more Greek Angels of Light or Matt Elliott, but lesser than both of those artists. The classical and glitch additions should be great, but they seem a bit slapdash. Pretty solid, but nothing spectacular.

2.5+

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Free for All (1965)
>hard bop

Where has Blakey's drumming been all my life? This album is fucking furious, and endless barage of jazz from all sides. The closer suffers in comparison to the other tracks a lot, but the first three tracks are really damn good.

FIRST 0.5 OF THE TERM AND S CHART

Tindersticks - Tindersticks (1993)
>chamber pop

How this album is so well regarded is fucking mystifying. Somehow Tindersticks has managed to completely disregard the two things that make a good chamber pop album—vocals and arrangements—and produce one of the most well-regarded albums in the genre. Stuart Staples' voice is incredibly droll and monotonous, and not in a good way, more in a completely unfitting and distracting way. The instrumentation lacks the lushness that is so often linked with chamber pop, eschewing strings and brass for slipshod guitar work that completely lacks any melodic tendencies, and it is "pop" music after all. And its an hour and 13 fuckin' minutes. And the closer is fantastic for some reason. But that's the only redeemable part of this snooze-worthy record.

I think I just got spoiled Star Wars and I'm a bit sad.

>Alameda 5 - Duch Tornada
I like the variety here and the percussions were catchy. It can be quite cosmic at some moments. However, the album drags a bit too much, especially in the second part and the more obvious electronic sounds are not really well done imo.
7/10

>Rafael Anton Isarri - A Fragile Geography
Pleasant drone-ambient with a dense sound. It's a bit too uninventive and it kinda lacks the emotion I like to find in this genre. Just the kind of album I didn't dislike but I wouldn't relisten.

>Anne Garner - Be Life
I was pleasantly surprised by this. It reminds me a lot of Julia Holter, especially Tragedy, in a bit more stripped down version. Anne Garner's voice is soft and the music is sparse, bright ambient. The background music sound a bit muffled sometime though.

HELP ME!!!

I search a song.

It's an indie-pop song and the music video is about a suburban area where the people think about what they want to do. The daughter wants to kill her parents, the neighbor wants to fuck the daughter, the boy wants to fuck the neighbor's wife, the father wants to beat the crap outta the neighbor.

It went viral. Somebody know the name of the song and/or band?

This album was damn wonderful. It lays down wild jazzy jams with an atmosphere of bliss and beauty. Here, a thin line is walked between high-tempo chaos and a crisp sense of peace. This is a seriously rare fusion of musical moods that works incredibly well.

The playing is great, arrangements range from all the racous joy of a beach party to the calm respite as the sun sets at the end of it. Genuinely great.

8/10. Very recommended.

Swans - White Light From the Mouth of Infinity (1991)
>post-punk, gothic rock

I'm honestly not all that big on this. Its Swans, so the soundscaping is fantastic, of course, but the actual songwriting is pretty forgettable, and not nearly on the level of something like the majority of SftB. And Gira's voice, while normally pretty alright with me, is just off on this album. I think it might be because he sounds fucking exactly like Ian Curtis here.

Earth - Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull

This is not an offensive album, it's just dull, even for a drone album.
Like it kinda reminds me of the bar scenes in the second season of True Detective, y'know the ones, the ones with the girl singing and eveything's very depressing but insanely American, like covered in vaseline and dirt... That's what it reminds me of
Also The National, for some reason, and I hate that band.
There isn't a moment on this album where I can just embrace brain death and surrender myself to sound, which is kinda the point of atmospherics and drone, it's just a failure.

Similarities in sound go jelinek -> pole -> bc. Has the delays, the clicks and bass, idc what you call it.
>>
>>61117886
I'm not seeing substantial similarities between the former two and BC. Sure, they were influenced by them, just like pretty much everyone making electronic music at the time, but the sound is removed far enough to make that comparison pointless. I see a lot more similarities between BC and The Field to be honest, replacing that would be a better idea in my opinion. Not like From Here We Go Sublime is any good anyway.

Obviously it is a stretch in your opinion, otherwise you would have pointed it out by now. I don't want to listen to that trite again to refresh my memory but I'm pretty sure it's a shitty version of BC, while in my opinion the appeal of Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records and Pole are completely different from BC.
