Is expensive gear worth the money?
Looking at a s/h USA fender jazz bass on ebay for £1000.
Paying for a name? or better quality than a cheaper bass?
>>
>>61073260
There's a point where differences start to become minimal but at 1k, you're going to see some good quality, especially for made in usa or made in japan guitar/basses
Fender's good but you're partly paying for the name. But because of that, their resale value is pretty close to their original price, so it evens out.
If you're sure you don't want to sell back your bass, you could also look into some Sandberg or G&L
>>
>>61070001
They'd look alright if it weren't for the ugly copperburst finish.
>>
>>61044501
Thanks for the links really appreciate it.
Whoever makes these threads should update the op with these links next time
>>
>>61073260
depends on the instrument

there are certain things you pay premium for when you buy say a fender over a squier

a fender is
>made in USA
> says Fender on the headstock
> possibly higher quality parts. ie metal over plastic
> better bridge/nut usually
better tailpiece depending on the instrument
> hopefully better quality control

a lot with an instrument you are usually paying for a Fender logo on the headstock for the most part

unless the instrument is complete shit it will sound good with a decent setup. it may be harder to get a good setup with a cheaper instrument however.

i have a squier vintage modified bass vi and it come with all the problems that the fender pawn shop version comes with but at half the price. and i preferred the pickup placement on the squier more than the bridge humbucker on the fender so it was a no brainer to me.
>>
>>61073375
My Jazz guitar links are ancient, we went to a PDF at some point. My ISP can't make threads, so I haven't updated it in ages.

If my distortion pedal runs out of battery while playing, will my amp make no sound at all or just the clean tone?
>>
>>61078558
It won't make a sound, at best you might get a slightly "crushed" sound because the battery is starting to run out, which is useable, but having no juice in there is like having no battery at all.

They give you more reach while staying on the same place, it can help a lot. Buckethead and Paul Gilbert have big fingers and it probably contributed to make them able to do more unique sounding plays.
>>

>>61078430
Hmm
>>
>>61079374
>Yes, but even when it's not plugged in, there's a hum.
That's normal. If you plug nothing into an amp but still turn it on, it will have a small buzz. Non noiseless single coils will also have a buzz when plugged in.
If the hum does disappear when you turn down the volume knob on your guitar, then it's not the amp, it's the guitar.
>>
>>61079450
Turned down my tele's volume and yes, there's still a hum.
>>
>>61078892
>>

>>

>>61079637
How often do tubes need to be replaced? I talked with the previous owner for a bit and he only bought it a year or two ago and he hasn't used it that often.
>>
>>61078892
its hard to diagnose action problems with descriptions. you shouldn't loosen the truss rod beyond the point which the neck is straight or very slightly concave. if it buzzes too much when the truss rod has been properly adjusted, raise the bridge/saddles. if you have to put the action too high to play comfortably and eliminate most of the buzz, you may need a new nut or a fret dressing. did you change string gauges or something? it doesn't make sense that a fairly new strat would have that issue unless it slipped past QC, was damaged in some way, or you are doing something wrong.
>>
>>61079759
I put 10s on awhile ago but I didn't have problems until last week. It started buzzing so I loosened the rod a bit but nothing has fixed it. I think it's because of the humidity change here. I also tried cranking down the rod and raising the action back to 4/64 but that didn't help either

hmm. i really couldn't tell you. im not very well versed in guitar setup. i pretty much just know the basics and how to get it set to my liking. i doubt the humidity change would have that much effect, unless you moved or something, but i could be wrong, just never experienced that. if you can't get it to play comfortably, try asking some guys on one of the bigger forums and take some pictures, or just ask somebody at a local shop. the guys at my local place will give out info like that for free and offer to fix things for cheap or free unless it requires alot of time/effort.

>>
>>61080397
how many frets can you stretch your index to pinky on the top of the neck?
>>
>>61080147
>>61080237

if your truss rod is set up fine, the saddles are at standard height (4/64 is like factory standard), then the problem is simply the frets, you may need it leveled if the buzzing is excessive.

don't bother loosening the truss rod beyond like .015. anything more than that and the whole neck is going to feel very weird. you may not think you'll notice it because the measurement is so small, but you will.

you're always going to have some buzzing, so keep that in mind.

The pots are cheap as hell and the wrong value-500k vs 250k
The tone Capacitor is the wrong value-.047 vs .022
The stock pickups sound great, actually,

Putting the electronics back to original spec will improve the sound of the guitar A LOT, and your tone controls will become usable in a way they really aren't before.
The only "mod" I'd really recommend is putting a .001 cap between the lugs of the volume pot as a treble bleed. This keeps your highs in balance with the rest of your sound, making your volume pot much more usable.
Doing all this cost me less than $30 retail for the parts (I know how to solder) and turned my early 90s MIM Strat into a guitar that musicians now comment on how I must've gotten "one of the really good ones".
That always makes me smile just a little.

So I'm gonna route a jazz bass to have these pickups, only difference being a mudbucker at the neck. For the jazz pickups gonna use seymour duncan stacks, probably hot but I might have to take winds off the middle one. I was considering A Jaguar body, but I'm gonna just route a jaguar lower control plate into the jazz body, hopefully I can find a four switch one. Will be 2 volume 1 tone, one volume for the 3 jazz pickups and one for the mudbucker. What do you guys think?

And yes, i dimed it from time to time while I had it.
You're right that it's ludicrously loud, but it also sounds absolutely glorious in those few seconds while you still have your hearing.

I've also dimed pic related from time to time too while playing a Les Paul through it. I realize that profound deafness is inescapable for me, but I'm okay with that.

Yes they do.

Delay pedals are notoriously power-hungry. I think my delay pedal has an expected life of less than 10 hours from a 9v battery, and that's not at all atypical.

For comparison, I think the average distortion box battery life is like 150 hours or more.

>>
>>61083415
For what level of monies?

Fenders make some pretty nice stuff all prices, theres some crummy stuff but the range is huge so its not really a problem
Gibsons are overpriced/sometimes crappy.
Gretsch are ok. The budget models used to be really nice but they gotten kinda crappy, the intermediate ones made in Korea aren't that hot either tbhsenpaidesufam. The Jap Gretsches are nicer than 99.99% of Fenders and Gibsons at any price range.
Reverends are excellent guitars for the money.
Edwards makes copies of Gibsons and some Fenders, they are excellent.
Hallmark are really nice, but very niche in appearance.
Duesenbergs are excellent but pricey.

There are tons of small luthier/custom builders that will build you a much nicer guitar for 2000-2500 than Fender or Gibson.
