Anyway, how do I get a good warm fretless tone, you guys? I have an Ibanez Gary Willis signature that I'm using, but I can't seem to tweak the EQ just right enough to get that warm yet growly fretless tone. Any tips?

I've asked this before with no result. Does anyone know where I can find parts for an Accutune Kahler style bridge? I've messed around with a few Ibanez acoustics and they were nice. I played a Yamaha that was around the same price and I thought they were nice. They had a matte finish like my Taylor guitar and I felt like it makes it easier to move around on the neck. From what I've heard, Ibanez makes solid guitars. In the end it's all preference. Go into a Guitar Center or something and start fiddling around on a few and see what you like.
>>
Here's a question, how do you classify beginner, intermediate, and expert players?
Is it possible for a self-taught musicians that doesn't really understand much music theory to become an expert guitarist? (He doesn't know why certain things sound good together, but he knows when to utilize them)
>>
>>61045063
An expert player for me is someone who can play anything by ear, even just someone humming something.
>>
>>61045063
I'm self taught and I guess I'm not sure on whether or not I'lll ever achieve expert rating but here has been my progress.

begginer = I have no idea what I'm doing

intermediate = I know some theory and can play some recognizable music

expert = LOCKED

Becoming an expert at something is a lot more dynamic than just a step from intermediate too expert. You can create a fuck load of subsets and honestly the distinction is arbitrary
>>
>>61044434
pretty necessary if it isn't at least decently. if you are buying from a shop, try to get them to do it free or cheap. dont pay more than 30 dollars for sure. if buying used, try to get somebody you know who plays to do it for you and teach you. basic setups are pretty good to know how to do because they let you tweak your guitar exactly how you like it and save you time and money having to pay somebody whenever you want something done.
>>
>>61045133
That's just having a good ear, don't need to be an expert player for that
>>
>>61045265
Nah, it goes without saying that an expert player can play any song so having impeccable technique is necessary.
>>
>>61044820
Well if by intermediate you mean "know a little bit more than the basics", you kind of are stupid to have that much in guitars, especially if you have alot of other expensive gear. if you actually play in a band or feel a need to have them, then its not stupid.
>>
>>61045470
i like to think of myself as an intermediate rhythm player. i have good strumming technique, can transition between chords smoothly even if i just learn it on the spot, and i can play difficult rhythms since i've been playing drums longer than guitar. i just can't shred over a metal or rock song, or solo over a jazz / blues tune. my scale knowledge is lacking but my chord game is on point, basically.

Tbh I think that's good enough skill wise to justify any amount of gear, but I think $3000 is too much for anyone. You can just get so much bang for your buck, and I'm guessing you don't have 10 guitars. If you do you should really work on modding your guitars to get more out of them.

Wayyy too much for one guitar. Also, though this is up to personal preference, I wouldn't have 3 guitars in the same scale with (I imagine) similar pickup setups. You really should be able to get by with just one HH 24 3/4 guitar, which I would consider coil tapping. If you go the whole 9 yards you can get 4 different pickup sounds out of each humbucker, plus out of phase.
If you don't want to drill holes in your guitar you can get pickup rings with switches in them like pic related.
>>
>>61046179
i don't like how single coils sound practically ever.my les paul can switch between single coils and humbuckers though. i also hate how super clean amps like fender sound. i like guitars and amps with personality that make me feel a certain way when i play them. i play my explorer differently than my lp. even though they're going out of the same amp the sound is nowhere near the same

>>
>>61045063
beginner is somebody who isn't capable of performing core techniques and/or doesn't grasp basic musical ideas/theory

novice would be somebody who can play simple parts with basic understanding/feel for music

intermediate can play most music that isn't wankery and has good working knowledge of musical ideas/theory. can play with others effectively

good players have trained their ears and technique to compliment and improve their working knowledge into an ability to be seamless and deliberate. could jump into a band and play just about anything. can solo and improvise well.

great players are very physically skilled and have highly trained ears. they are fluent in music like most people are in their native tongue and there is little they cannot do and they are versed in many styles

expert players would be those who can physically perform as capably as realistically possible and can call upon specific and deep knowledge without effort and can play virtually any style

obviously just imo, tough. i also don't think being an "expert" player makes you enjoyable to listen to or goes all that far for you in terms of good songwriting. i honestly only listen to maybe 2-3 guys who solidly fit my expert description and none of them are my favorite
>>
>>61044521
Because that's what was on it when I got it. And it makes more sense to use a Floyd nut with a Kahler that a Kahler nut because it locks right at the nut. The only reason Kahler doesn't use a locking nut is patent issues. And I'll call it a wang bar if I want.
>>
>>61045582
>>61045910
ehh, id say you spent too much and definitely spent too much to have just 3 gibsons with probably all humbuckers. i mean you like what you like, but you would probably do better to have just bought your favorite one of those 3 and some other kinds of guitars with more diversity if you are going to drop 2k on guitars. that or just buy a nice amplifier with some stompboxes for experimenting. i have a hard time justifying the $1200 worth of guitars i have and it sounds like i am probably slightly more advanced than you, but if you like playing and see it as worth the money, nothing wrong with it. its really only dumb if you spend disproportionately to your interest level, so long as you aren't buying to compensate for playing.
>>
>>61046423
Not with that mindset you won't. I used to have it and I never got much better until I finally learned my first solo. When learning difficult shit, it's very important not to get intimidated by difficult passages. Just take you time, practice with a metronome, and don't give up.
>>
>>61046423
Deliberate practice is the key, not just playing through things in the hope of improvement.

Get a metronome, start slow and analyze what you are doing - stop and correct bits that you can't play even if it means working on one shift/ chord change etc - recording yourself can help with this.
>>
>>61046803
i'm not a fan of pedals really. i don't like how strats or teles feel / sound. i really like the sound of humbuckers through a cranked british amp. that's it. no other fuckery.
>>
>>61046899
but what do i practice?
>>
>>61046936
Not the guy you're responding to but whatever is relevant to the style you want to play. Look at the techniques and patterns used by your favorite guitarists and work on them. Learning their solos then improvising your own to songs you like helps.
>>
>>61046936
Scales, arpeggios, modes, licks, riffs, picking, legato, rhythmic patterns, strumming, fingerpicking, songs you want to learn, songs to impress girls, etc.

Get yourself a book and start working through it - the Guthrie Govan books in the OP are good, and I also like Terrifying Technique by Carl Culpepper.

Mix up your practice with technique and songs you want to learn, even if you're just learning the chords - it's important to enjoy what you're playing.

Also try to be regular with your practice - you'll achieve more with 30 minutes a day than trying to cram in 6 hours on a Sunday.
>>
>>61046910
For me, nothing quite beats the sound of a tele in the middle position, little bit of drive, on a silverface amp
>>
>>61046999
i really like wavves, cloud nothings, and bass drum of death. i feel like the style of music i enjoy can potentially hold me back. i can't stand listening to certain types of music no matter how impressive the guitar is
>>
>>61047500
Not him but I always advocate learning to play in styles you don't enjoy. Not everything obviously, but you can definitely pick up techniques that will be useful to you.

Eg, learn some black metal for the tremolo picking and string skipping.
>>
>>61047500

>>61047594
Hit the nail on the head - knowing more stuff will never make you a worse player.

It can really make your playing more interesting as well. I mainly play metal but my forays into ambient music and various other styles can really help you mix it up.

The problem with a lot of metal bands nowadays is that they're trying to be other metal bands, whereas their heroes were listening to all sorts of music.

Using metal as an example, but it definitely can be extended to a lot of genres. I usually recommend this to people wanting to learn tremolo picking.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8cMle178PY

I want to put more time into my finger picking and hybrid picking. I think it'd really help me ambient playing.

I would suggest to get in a band, it shouldn´t be to hard to find a band in need of a bassist, or you can start one with your friends. You should learn the basics of playing notes since you are going to do a lot of pumping at the start. When you´ve got the pumping down, you can start improvising a bit. Start using other notes to transition smoothly between chords and take it from there. You´re going to screw up a lot, so play with some people you´re comfortable with.

for instance, what are the disadvantages of a hollow body vs a solid body? (pic related is what has my dick hard right now) in what way does buying a certain guitar restrict me genre wise? is there such a thing as a jack of all trades and is it worth considering?

i don't know diddly shit about guitars, sorry, i played two shitty washburns since i was 12, recently bought a taylor. so i know nothing about electric guitars, really.

stupid question: if i replace my neck from the 4 string guitar with the one with 5 strings, could anything go wrong? Could that bent the neck too much?
>>
>>61050312
Are you sure the new neck will even fit in the existing neck pocket?

Or do you mean convert your 4 string to 5 string by changing bridge and nut and adding a tuner?

If the latter, possibly as you may not have enough adjustment in the truss rod to counter the extra tension

new neck would have to fit the pocket or you would have to rout the pocket to size, then get a bridge that will fit for proper action and intonation.

Quite probably more trouble than it's worth.

>$99-250
Nothing, because it's all shit.
Yes, all of it.
If it works, it's shit. If it doesn't, it's a basket case and likely takes more money to fix than it's worth.
Deals can be had, but only if you know how to repair amps and don't mind that it's a wreck because you're doing it as a hobby in your spare time. Those projects of "look at this $500 amp that I spent $600 and 100 hours of my time on and now it's awesome!"? That's where those amps come from.

>$250-400
Decent low-wattage stuff is all used here. Off-name pro level gear is still in need of major repairs at this price point, (most likely replacing the old electrolytic capacitors) and the cosmetics will be off.

>$400-700
Decent-tier low wattage new gear starts showing up here. Off-brand pro gear is either in good shape or needs minor repair. Big-name high wattage pro gear (Fender, Marshall, Vox and high-end Peavey) will still need routine expensive repairs here (capacitors), but no major rebuilding.

Anything above that is usually in good shape and ready to go.

It came that way. I'm not a mongoloid so I'm capable of screwing a bridge post without fucking it up, but the previous owner Damn near destroyed this guitar. If you frequent these threads often, you'll probably remember the neck that's all fucked up, I posted it a lot when the little faggot got all whiny about a scratch in a screw recess on his neck joint, it's this same guitar. I'm convinced I bought it from a 14 year old moron or his father.
>>
>>61049607
550 is too high a price for that. Need 450-500 max.

>does buying a certain guitar restrict me genre wise
Sort of, you won't be getting any hi-gain tones out of that.

>is there such a thing as a jack of all trades
No, not really, It's why most of us have more than a few, the closest you will come is a Les either Gibson or Epiphone or a Strat depending on preference, I've owned both and both have their adv/disadv.
Before you go pick three or four that look good and stick to those.
Look at Ibanez Artcore hollows too, some nice, lower price too.
>>

biggest pet peeve of mine is when people eye contact when playing music. its the douchiest look. i even see it in performance advice columns sometimes, "for a better performance, try making eye contact with you audience" ugh. fucking dont do that, concentrate on getting the best sound possible
>>
>>61051126
It's a 3 way switch. The middle position selects both pickups. I can't explain it any clearer. I've had 2 Teles, I know. I've never played a Nashville Tele, but I assume they have a 5 way switch like a Strat, as they have a similar pickup layout.
>>
>>61051078
Any specific preference on what you'd be getting if you only have those price points to work with?
>>
>>61044963
>not understanding how electrified musical instruments make their sound.

The amp is much more responsible for your sound quality than your electric guitar is. Therefore if you want to sound good on a budget, you ought to spend at least as much or more on your amp as you do on your guitar.
Given that $500 max budget, you'll be much better off with a $200 guitar and a $300 amp than a $400 guitar and $100 amp.
A great amp will make an average guitar sound great.
An awful amp will make a great guitar sound awful.
>>
>>61044922
>>61051225
I'm asking because it's a question of what gets you the best bang for your buck and when do changes become incrementally insignificant if you have $500 to work with.

I'd like to get as much responses as possible since everybody has their own needs.

It's like headphones, are you willing to jump into the $5000 range to afford the pair of stax and the equally decent amp for it?
>>

Not bad for $100 bucks used, now you can get a new one for $150. This is the 30, not bad for a practice, but sounds best cranked and it is loud.

Good stuff can be had cheap but only if you know what you're doing. I got my 8100 for $200 AUD and my DSL for $500 AUD. Both working perfectly.

I tend to avoid anything that'll need a lot of work. It's hard to tell what you're getting yourself into.

>>61051184
You'd rather someone stare at their fretboard than connect with the audience? It makes no difference to your playing if you're well practiced.

$500 isn't enough money to hit any real diminishing returns in amplifier quality. That turns up later when you start looking at things like SLO100s. Possibly my favourite amplifier, does it sound five times better than a 5150? Well... no...

This is a closeup of the bridge. You can see the hex screws where the fine tuners should be. The idiot previous owner spray painted the entire bridge so as soon as I started using it paint started rubbing off. I managed to sand off the paint from most of it except for the saddles, and that's wearing off, starting where my pick hits when I fiddle with knobs. You can also see the hole the guy hacked our of the body a quarter inch or so too far forward so intonation is spotty at best. I can get it to play in tune for the most part but it's very unforgiving to tuning, I have to have it exact or it sounds dildoes.

>>61052333
I had to fold up metal studs from a belt because the retard didn't measure where the bridge would actually sit, so I have to jam those in there to hold it far enough back that I can get close to perfect intonation. The little screws inside that you use to move the bridge back and forth can't even push it back without being completely threaded through. Eventually I'm going to have to dowel the holes and drill them about 3/8 inch back so I can get intonation right.

>>61049607
well if its your first guitar, you should just ask somebody you know who plays guitar to go with you. say youll buy them lunch or something. buying is kind of complicated when you don't know what is good and what you prioritize. generally, for a first guitar, you just want something that plays real easy and stays in tune. hollow bodies' main disadvantage is that they feedback alot and are more fragile. solid bodies really don't have any disadvantages except sound, if you prefer hollow body sound, and that they are generally less comfortable to play while standing.
>hollow body vs.
>>
>>61052371
They made thousands of these things and they broke fairly often, so there's gotta be tons of spare parts floating around. That's why I was asking where I could find them. I kind of want to say fuck it and just put a tune o matic on it since the bushings are all in their original places, but there's that big ugly hole and I don't have the means to refinish it. It would piss me off, all the work I gotta do on it, but I bought it as a project rather than as an immediately playable instrument.

Only buy it if you want it as a modding project imo. I bought one new and it wasn't very good. Not bad for the $300 I paid, but the J. Masics is much better and was only slightly more. If you are willing to swap out the shitty pickups, get a new bridge, get it a total setup, and replace/deal with potentially subpar electronic part quality, they could be a nice guitar imo. if you are willing to do that stuff, it will probably be the best jazzmaster you can get for the money, but at that point, its not the potential steal they appear to be at frist.

Studs and bushings in Imperial are cheap enough and if I can afford a new Kahler, I can afford those. So, I bought a Schecter, one of the mid-range models, and it has quite a ton of fretbuzz. I raised the action a little and it seemed to help, and over the year I played it, I got used to it. I recently found a guitar tech nearby, that I could probably contact and have my guitar setup profesionally. I didn't mess with the truss rod, because I had no reliable way to tell if it's okay (seemed okay to me). Should I take it to a tech and ask for a setup, or do all low action guitars buzz? It sometimes buzzes like a real bitch and it has really shitty sustain cause of that. Or should I just try to fix it myself?

If the neck isn't warped you can and should fix this yourself in my opinion.

Professional setup is nice if you have a quality instrument that needs to be in the best shape possible. But when you'll end up with half a dozen guitars of varying value that all need to be setup once a year (or twice if you live in the north) shit will become very expensive very fast.

It's not hard to adjust your truss rod and bridge and there are tons of tutorials out there.

You should try a Les Paul 60s Tribute. The p90s in it are like the missing link between a Strat pickup and a humbucker-still growly like a humbucker, but without so much mud in the midrange. Likewise, it's got some of the high end sparkle of the Strat, but without icepick-y highs all over the place. It's a really nice balance of both worlds.

So I have a lead guitar, playing a solo, a rhythm guitar that plays a riff over and over and switches when I want the song going somewhere else, but then does bass do? Mirror the rhythm guitar on his octave? and what about the drums, should they follow the same tempo as the rhythm riff or lay down a consistent pattern to keep the song stable? I know it can change from song to song and style to style but what's like the norm.
Also if the bass and the drums should play together how do I sync up with him (I'm bass), I know how to do my own thing but I've never played to someone else's beat, and I don't even know if he's good... Help ;_;

just make it sound good

That's so much easier said than done, I can lay down a really sweet groove, and I play guitar too and when I layer with myself it's all good, except when I add a second layer, it starts sounding really messy and I know nothing about drums either, but he'll probably play his part like he wants so it's not much of a concern, but I even taught one of the guitarists how to play when he first started and I know how two uncoordinated guitars sound. I just need advice when it comes to the big band, if it all goes well I might finally have a band.

Any comprehensive guides on pup-swapping/modding general? My buddy bought me an Ibby GRG7221 for xmas and it'll be my first seven-string. Definitely planning on pulling the stock pups and throwing in DiMarzios or SDs.

Pan one guitar left and the other right if you're recording. Don't cut the midrange too much on the guitars or they won't cut through the mix.

Nice Tele, Anon. Looks like my Strat.

Did anyone watch that Jaco documentary?

It just seemed like everyone who knew him was saying >yeah he could play but what a fucking cunt to be around
>>
>>61056749
I think I found a scalloped version of that for super cheap. Looked good, but I don't know if I need a scalloped fretboard on a guitar.
>>
>>61056648
I will see, but as of now my main(good) song is the two guitars working together on the same riff (hope they can do it), so I don't think I should pan that too much.
>>
>>61057034
Everyone on the planet knows Jaco as the Jimi Hendrix of Bass with 10x the ego.
>>
>>61057068
Oh okay I had never really looked into him just liked his playing with Weather Report, so the documentary was my first exposure to his actual personality. Seems like that bouncer did everyone a favor.

Anyone want to help a scrub find what chords Damien might be using in this video?

I'm pretty sure he's seen as a lovable asshole, but he was a bipolar junkie with a superiority complex. Not a good combination.

I just want to write music and play with people.

I don't care if we go anywhere it's just for fun and to improve my guitar playing.

$700 amp budget and that has to include a cab, I'm not against combos though.

Looking for loud cleans as I get my sound from pedals but I wanna go tube as the 50 watt tube amp I'm currently borrowing is fucking amazing.

Looking at
>Fender Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville
>Peavey Classic 30/50
>Carvin Belair/VT50
>???
What would you get, /GG/

I'm now binge watching live performances and studio recordings to dissect them and getting a clearer idea, that might work for you too.

Get a Roland Cube. I've only tried a Micro Cube and they're about £100 new in the UK, and they sound absolutely sick.
>>
Could you send a bass signal without most of the low end through a guitar amp ? I think you could do some pretty cool textures by using both a guitar and a bass amp at the same time, or even using both clean and distorted signal.
>>
>>61058198
I've tried them but i'm not a big fan of the cleans
>>
>>61052616
looks like some sort of jazz archtop
>>
>>61058269
Have you ever tried using a crunch tone and rolling down the volume knob on your guitar to get a different kind of clean sound? In my opinion it makes your cleans much warmer and gives them more clarity.
>>
>>61058226
I know the guy from Royal Blood plays his bass through guitar amps to get his tone
>>
>>61057904
I fucking love the gain sound on the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I'd definitely go for that one

Guitar amp, zero problem

Guitar speaker, different story, and by extension combo amps as well
>>
So i have a looper pedal and I just don't know what the fuck to do once i get a chord progression going. Should i just start trying to hit licks in time with the chord progressions? Once I start playing it just sounds like a guy playing scales. What the fuck do i do?
>>
>>61058502
I knew about speakers but I wasn't sure whether it would be the same about heads.
I wonder what a fretless bass would sound through a guitar amp now.

Improvise with the minor pentatonic scale, can't go wrong with it

Not a sales guy, but I'd spend as much as you are possibly comfortable with.

For amps, the magic cutoff point is about $700. Under that, you're giving up something, whether it's build quality, sound quality, wattage, features you want or a state of good repair. Up above that, everything on that list is available in most things on the market, and if you choose one without all of that, it's because YOU wanted it, not because you had to settle.

Under that amount of money, you will know where the money you spent on the amp went to. A $500 amp will be better than a $400 amp, which will likewise be better than a $350 amp, and so on.

As always, try to get used stuff when and where you can-you'll get more amp for your money. And if you can set a little money aside for repairs you know the amp will need (like new tubes, or capacitors if the amp is more than a few years old), you can get an even better deal. Just be sure to tell the seller you know what you'll have to do to get it fixed up when it's time to talk price.

Does anyone know how to get small scratches out of a guitar finish? It's barely noticeable but it still bugs the hell out of me

I'm not sure what kind of lacquer it has, but it is a squier strat if that helps
