so just got this strymon timeline delay. pretty pretty nice as far as digital delay goes, plus its stereo which is rather useful for me.
>>
also picked up the strymon big sky reverb pedal, loads of really ok sounding different reverb algorithms. also stereo.
>>
So I don't have any friends or anyone to jam with. I'm not a great guitar player to begin with, only been playing a year or two. Was thinking about picking up a bass soon. Is bass fun to just play by yourself? Maybe I could start making my own music as a 1 man band?
>>
also just got this eventide timeline dual digital delay stereo unit. looper has a really cool time stretch feature when you use an expression pedal, gets into granular sounds.
>>
at the same time i scored an eventide space stereo reverb pedal. lots of interesting ok sounding reverbs. never been a huge fan of digital reverb really, but there are some neat reverse reverb setting etc in these units. eventide seem to have more control over adjusting parameters than the strymon. both brands sound like what good digital sounds like, i guess.

>>61016355
Hey gearspammer, do you know of any delay pedal with an FX Loop ? The EHX Deluxe memory boy has one but 550ms of delay sounds a bit short

>>61016349
It's fun if you play stuff where you're not just holding the root note. So basically funk, technical metal, mathcore, etc.
Also yeah you can make your own music with just a guitar and a bass, you just need to get a drum machine and an interface. Having a demo of your stuff will also make people more likely to join your band if you ever want to gig.
>>
went ahead and grabbed the strymon multi switch to take full advantage of the hidden looper functions. this is the fullest featured looper i've ever owned, maybe not as full feature as the boomerang looper but that was years ago when i got to play with one and don't really remember all the features it had...was maybe too much money for a looper? dunno.
>>
>>61016349
When you're just starting out no because you'll just be learning basic basslines and such but once you start becoming advanced and getting into more melodic playing that's when it can get more fun
I would also suggest going to a local music store/studio because they most likely know the local bands/musicians and hopefully can find you someone you can play with
>>
>>61016408
yeah i've got several. off the top of my head...this strymon timeline has an f/x loop. moogerfooger has f/x loop. red witch titan triple delay has f/x loop after first delay. ummm...fairfield circuitry meet maude has f/x loop. maybe check on effectsdatabase.com for more cause i'm pretty sure i've got a couple others and there might be one ore two that exist that I don't have. great feature.

yeah. just depends on how you wanna use the delay, i guess. i really love my old blue face dmm and vintage dmm...that modulation is stellar. never really tried one of the modern ehx that i just HAD to have. oh that reminds me, the jhs panther has an f/x loop and is basically a straight clone of the ehx memory boy i think. i LOVE synching it with other tap tempo pedal to control them, like...that catalinbread tremolo can be slaved to it...or chase bliss pedals can be slaved to it. really cool feature.

>>
>>61016490
God damn those are way out of my budget for pedals. But yeah it seems to be a huge tool, would love to try it out.

>>61016535
Depends on what you want to play. You'll also need an amp.
But basically, just go into a store and try out a Precision or a Jazz bass (or even a P+J config). I'd say also look out for ibanez SRs, they're pretty much bass guitar for guitarists, and those with on board EQ give a lot of range. They also lose a lot of their value compared to fender basses, so they can be had for cheap used.
Also don't be afraid of trying out some 5 strings if you fancy having a bigger range.
>>
>>61016719
>out of my budget
yeah i just keep a vigilant eye on the b/s/t threads on guitar/pedal forums and sites like reverb.com there are always great deals to be found if you are patient but sure, all of those pedals are still going to be a couple hundred dollars even secondhand. lots of people are into trading pedals too so thats a good way to try out different pedals without spending any/much money.

This is my essential pedals for myself, me, and I.

>a nice clean tube amp set to the brink of breakup
>a tube screamer type pedal for rhythm crunch
>a booster pedal for a solo boost

That right there is tone/10.

Knobs
Top left hand knob: Volume for toggle pointing towards neck.
Bottom left hand knob: Volume for toggle pointing towards bridge.
Top right hand knob: Four-way rotary switch.
Removed the bottom right hand knob because I don't use tone to often.
Toggle
Toggle pointed towards the neck: Both pickups in parallel.
Toggle pointed towards bridge: Engages four-way rotary switch (top knob on the right hand side):
Position 1: Neck only.
Position 2: Both pickups in series.
Position 3: Both pickups out-of-phase.
Position 4: Bridge Only.

Single coil bridge pickup, treble all the way up, mid and bass way down. Annoying fuzz/distortion like a harmonic percolator clone (or EHX satisfaction if you're on a budget). Use a metal pick.

Obviously not exactly what he does but it should get you in the ballpark of that aggressive trebly sound.

Delay and wah suggestions?
>>
>>61018752
Thanks, it was my first guitar I liked enough to mod, it was hard work. It was a lot less modded than the other ones I had (though I'm starting a business where a lot of those mods I did come stock, so it all worked out in the end), but I have a lot more attachment to this one. It sounds more WRHB/Fat Strat than P92 (as opposed to an equal mix of the two like the site says), despite that they're still a great set of pickups and I'd heavily advise you check out a pair. Coolest thing about it is you can actually talk to Lindy about what you're wanting and he'll give you advice based on that (though he'll also not stop talking, so good luck with that).

>>61019356
Boxidizer/Rusty Box might help too.
>>
>>61019574
The budda bud wah is the shit.

If you can find it and want something crazy, the AD4096 is a pretty awesome delay, as is the EHX 16 second digital delay if you want something more affordable, the OBNE Black Fountain is pretty fun. But honestly, the Carbon Copy is a mainstay on a lot of boards for a reason.

Been playing for 10 years, but took a large break for two of them (2012-2014)

My favorite of the three always seems to be the most recent one, so that'll be the Gibson Les Paul. I wanted one since I started over a decade ago and it's nice to finally possess one.

Tuck Andress, Martin Barre, Paul Gilbert, Andre Olbrich, EvH, these are the guys that made me want to pick it up and keep going. Made more progress in the last two months than I did in the last four years when it comes to alternate picking and speed accuracy.

Sadly I am seriously lacking in gear. I have maybe $200 worth of amp and pedals right now, but that's okay I'm not in a rush to go out and blow $20k on perfecting my tone like some of my buddies have.
>>
>>61020818
I've got a Hot Rod Deluxe that's been my first tube amp, and I'm graduating soon, so I've been shopping for my next amp. The JC-120 is pretty high on the list, but a lot of vintage fenders pop up around me for $700-900

I play quite a bit of ambient music. I don't use reverb, but I base most of my tones around diffusion which is a type of multi-delay.

Seriously, you picked 2 genres that are known for having easy wash rinse repeat bass parts.

As for auditioning people, things to look for are; compatibility(personally and musically), ability to play the parts you write/write parts to what you're playing, and excuses or anything that might become an excuse later down the line.

can anyone help me out with some guitar micing problems im having?

I feel like im using a setup that should be able to get decent results but whenever I mic my amp it just sounds really weak.

I use an SM57 on an Orange Tiny Terror combo and record direct into into a Boss 8-track. Im not using any post-production on the guitars apart from maybe a little EQ.

I'm wondering it cause im really not pushing the volume on my amp, cause I dont want to bother my neighbours. I think im playing at a decent volume though.

Would really appreciate any help.

Turn it up and keep experimenting with microphone positioning. It isn't as simple as chucking it in front of the speaker.

>>
>>61026820
Where are you pointing the mic, in relation to the speaker?

Directly into the inner bubble often gets you a tinny sound with no low end, pointing it at the edge of the main cone often gets a muddy sound. Sorta need to find a balance between the two to get a good sound. You might wanna angle the way the mics pointing, to be more parallel or perpendicular with the cone, rather then straight on. Or, pull the mic back a foot or two. There's various ways to go about it, and you get different sounds out of where you put the mic in relation to the speaker.

I personally angle the mics head where the bubble meets the cone from above, and have it right up against the amp grille, and then go from there. But it's different with different speakers/amps/guitars etc.

specifically from 7:50- until the end of the video, what exactly should I be learning? I'm not one who thinks it's bad to put humbuckers in a tele, but the fact that it doesn't have a tone knob is a dealbreaker for me. But if you want a Jim Root tone I'd get the fender one or something else with active pickups, the squier one has passive pickups.
>>
Why are there no guitars with a single coil bridge and humbucker neck? It only seems to be the other way around, or two/three of one.
>>
>>61027187
Scales, modes, rhythms, harmonies and improvisation. Nothing super involved, just basic-level stuff. The biggest thing they're doing is one guy is setting the melody and he rest of them are following it-that's basic band dynamics there.
That and practice more, especially over ostinato rhythmic pieces that give you the opportunity to solo like that. The rest is just rehearsal and playing together with other musicians until you're tight and in rhythm with each other.

Mic sound on a speaker is all about position. Treble beams straight out and stronger at the center. Bass kind of radiates out in all directions. Don't point the mic straight at the dust cap. Shoot at anywhere on the cone. Straight on and right in front of the speaker gives the most present and maybe aggressive sound. Move the mic up the cone to move the bass and treble. Going a little off axis, like a 5-10 degree angle, is an option too. Pull the mic back a few feet or more if you want to to bring in the sound of the room and make the tone less present.

More microphones are always going to sound thicker. This is omitting the phasing issues that more mics bring.

There are some sounds a 57 won't do. Condenser mics sound crazy scooped when compared. If this is the type of sound you're trying to hit, then they need to be considered. I've been really happy with my 57 and samson c01 pair. The 01 is $40 and I've used a $350 AT that didn't play well with the 57.

I think the bands Gum, Pond and kind of Tame Impala come close. Those three bands are essentially one huge band with interchangeable people, quite literally. You can get by using just the index on the 13th fret, major on the 15th and 3rd finger on the 16th.
I'm guessing the b means bend, so having a slight angle on the wrist will make bends easier as you can just pull with your fingers.
Also always rest your thumb on the back of your neck, unless you want to do heavy vibrato/huge bends, having the thumb over the neck is almost always a disadvantage.
Another thing, unrelated to playing, I'd suggest always using tabs with sheet notation whenever possible, that way you can instantly know how the rythm goes.

So friday I posted about MM/P basses and somebody told me that Sandberg is known to sell them

Yesterday I got to try out pic related

It was an extremely well made instrument, definitely worth the hefty price tag. Only issue is, the split coil does not sound like a Precision pickup. At all. It's more of a soapbar type of sound. None of the growling definition I was looking for.

Does anybody else have any leads? I'm currently trying to find a Schecter Diamond P Plus (also MM/P) to try out but I'm open to more suggestions.

I think ill just have to do some experimenting sessions recording and comparing different positions. With my gear, I have to turn the intput levels pre, and post all the way up if im recording through a dynamic mic to get a decent level. Feels like the SM57s are set up for working with gig level volumes

>tfw I have no fun anymore playing fast, technical shit
>tfw the most fun I'm having is playing stuff like Fugazi

Is this the end? Am I about to stop playing guitar?
>>
>>61029775
oh yes. fugazi is known by guitarists as "the culmination of music as an art form and an object"
>>
>>61029775
remember that music is an art form. there is no right or wrong

only less effective and more effective for the message you want to get across. If you have more fun playing a cerain style and it speaks to you more than focus on refining that.

It's swamp ash/walnut body with a maple/bubinga neck, they're not rare at all, even fender uses them. (not sure about bubinga but they definitely use maple, swamp ash and walnut.)

bubinga is a pretty commonly used wood nowadays. I'd imagine that guy is just upset nice basses never pop up used for $200 less than they are actually worth

I've seen a fretless BTB505 a few weeks ago on the used market for something like 300€, went away within a week. And the used market's usually pretty fucked where I live. You just have to stalk the right websites.

Since it's bass o' clock, anyone has some cheap 5 string pickups to recomment for a fretless bass ?

Nah you can't say that while posting a gibson bass, they just look wrong.
I'd definitely buy an Explorer bass though.
