Existencial bummer:

Should I git gud before getting me a nice acoustic guitar acoustic (well, actually not THAT nice, it's a 250€ which is the most money I would be spending in a single piece of instrument so far) or should I get said guitar so I can be inspired to git gud?

Also, why is Marty Friedman so insanely good at making music? "Scenes" is such a perfect album.

Good for beginners. I've been playing on a Yamaha RBX-270 for 11 years. They're similar, so yours should last.

>>60998264
Hell if I don't know what you're talking about. When you are enjoying the solo he sudenly drops the note and you wonder how the hell he bends "down". Not only he knows perfectly the notes that sound good but also the one or two before that will also make it sound exotic and complex when releasing the bend up. What a beast.

Well, you will get plenty of effects since it comes with its own software. I heard nothing but good things about the community made settings. And 100W is more than enough to make your neighbours want to kill you.

I plan on getting one myself (the III may be a little overkill to me, though) next year.

i quite like the orange cr120. if you are going to buy used there are actually a lot of overlooked SS amps that are pretty nice. older peavey combos, carvin x series, older yamaha combos have cool build in distortion, marshall lead 100. sunn betas are great too but they cost too much now

Hey guys I'm in the market for a really loud amp with good headroom for gigging, we usually do impromptu shows without any PA help so I was thinking about getting a 4ohm ahead to match my 4ohm 60watt 4x12 that can handle reverb and fuzz without losing the original clean tone.
I've been looking at Vuntage 1970s Fender Bassmen and Vintage 1970s Music Man 65 amps. Sunn O))) seemed pretty cool but it's way out of my $809 max price range

Yea I trust fender and the videos I've seen of the 1971-1975 Bassmen blow me away, I really wanna try one out but no major stores have one near me (Chicago) so I'll have to check out pawn shops and mom and pop stores.

Sunn O))) is something I've been looking into a bit since Hendrix had a deal with em and they seem to be perfect for the Surf Fuzz sound I plan to rip the speakers with but most tube ones I find online aren't less than $1,000

Do you have any experience with Music Man 65watt 1970s amps? One of my favorite guitarist John Dwyer uses them and I like his tone. same with Ty Segall who uses a Music Man and I like his sound as well

Oh cool, my fear with the Bassman and Sunns were having a bassier darker sound overpower the overall EQ but I had some weird intrest with the Music Man. I split my pedals with a warm silicon fuzz mixed in with a grainy geranium fuzz and topped off with a BOSS FRV-1 to get a vintage reverb tone, it's a pretty delicate balance to EQ though.

Yeah I don't really get this either. If anything tube amplifiers are generally more reliable than solid state amplifiers due to the general idea that tube amplifiers are flat out better and being offered as a higher end product.

Really man, my DSL has failed on me once the entire time I've owned it. My tech got it working again in an hour and a half and it's been going strong since.

The most temperamental amplifier I own is my Marshall 8100 which is psuedo-valve solid state stuff.

The cleans aren't great by any stretch, but if I throw my strat into the low gain input on the green channel it's not bad. Just a bit stiff really.

I've got that Blues Junior now though, so no reason to.

Now if you want an amplifier with way better cleans than people think, try a DSL out. Mine usually stuns people.

>>61000538
It has a lot of controls that effect the tone in a minor way. It definitely is a super flexible amplifier, but from what I can tell it ends up being a bit like a Mark. Can take a long time to dial in a specific sound.

Remembering I use an AxeFX, it's a big call for me to call something convoluted. WITH THAT BEING SAID, if they made a rack mount model with no poweramp, I'd probably get one.

No you would need a power amplifier as well. I slave mine into my heads, usually the DSL which is modded for KT-77s.

Another popular choice is modern MOSFET stuff like a Matrix Amplification GT800FX or GT1000FX.

You can also record direct out via USB, but I wouldn't really recommend it honestly. I only do that for quick demo stuff.

Logan Square and suburban Elk Grove here, I'm in an out of my apartment in LS and visit EGV with my family to use my big boy gear. CME is fucking based dude, they'll lug in any amp, as many pedals as you want and any guitar you want into a practice room for you. My first visit I picked a Candy apple red 1967 Mosrite off the wall and plugged it into a Deluxe reverb and went on a surf rock marathon playing in that room for 2.4 hours. Another time I went and I was planning to get a looping pedal so they lined me up with about 5-6 different loopers in the room until I picked the ditto. I can't wait to visit there next week for my finals break.

Speaking of CME
>>61000487 Heres the style of stoner/fuzz I'm usually going for http://youtu.be/Au45m1MHP4c
I own the pedal in this video and its wooly as fuck and I love it. My friend has the 5150, it's a killer amp but sometimes the treble sounds sharp and there needs to be a noise gate on it. I also think the EVH version sounds a lot better

>>61000350
So I should be looking for (in order of quality)
1. Sunn tube head (my only problem would be price and volume but I can always send and extra $200-300 to put higher handling speakers in my 4x12, but it makes the problem with price even greater)

2. Fender Bassman, midline and seems good on tone and headroom. I just hope it doesn't get chimey with the high notes when i crank it

2. Music Man (Ties with the FBM)
Pros is that it's used by some of my favorite artist and has the perfect pice and power and long for me except that it might have the same deal with the Bassman if it gets chimey driven up

>So I should be looking for (in order of quality)

>My friend has the 5150, it's a killer amp but sometimes the treble sounds sharp and there needs to be a noise gate on it
Was that the red channel though? My video was the green channel. Can dial the high end out easily there. Gating isn't a problem at all on green either.

Here's a bit of shitty lead with mine on the green channel to give you an idea. Using my fuzz pedal for a lot of the drive.

>What are you playing, etc, etc. I can offer minor suggestions, but so much is going to come down to taste

Psych rock. punk, noise and jangly pop stuff, just bedroom right now but I'm,getting the amp thinking about doing gigs.
>>
>>61001024
yeah that's why i'm leaning towards the strat but i just really love how LPs look / feel. strats feel cheap to me when i hold them.
>>
>>61000883
Ah, Chicagobro. I figured it was you.

That's how I got my current OD pedal. I wanted to buy the EHX Soul Food but I also wanted to demo the Fulltone OCD and a couple boutique ODs just to make sure I was getting the best pedal I could. They set me up in a room with five or six pedals, including the Soul Food with JHS circuitry mod (which is the one I ended up getting.)

My looper is my EHX Memory Man with Hazarai, although I don't really use it in my band. I'm working on developing a solo set for jazz guitar so I'll probably use it to loop standard chorus progressions while I solo over them.

I think that if the Soul Food with JHS mod hadn't been such a great deal I would have gone with the OCD, or something very similar. Now I'm trying to hunt down a decent chorus pedal (more for leads; I don't really go in for that '90s-Nirvana sound). I'm leaning MXR if I can't find the Providence Anadime Chorus on the cheap.
>>
>>61001094
Personally I'd be going for a Marshall JCM or something Fender like a Deluxe Reverb myself. You should be good to use anything besides real high-gain metal monsters for that stuff though. Go have a play of a bunch of heads (with volume if you can) and see what tickles you.

Just remember that some amplifiers can be a bit weird to dial in.

>>61001117

I didn't spend a whole lot of time looking for a chorus, since I don't use it much, nor do I use much of it. I just got a Joyo JF-05 off Amazon for $35, and it works great for what I use it. It definitely isn't as spacey as some of the more expensive ones that I tried.

>>61001499
i often use open d (dadf#ad) and open c (cgcgce)

I know how to turn the tuning pegs, but I don't know the trick to changing the tuning of a string without having the ears for doing it without help.

>>61001656
How are Seagulls pricing in Canada? I imagine they'd be pretty decent. What part of Canada out of curiosity? I used to live in Toronto.
>>
>>61001397
A lot of newer ones do

A couple of my students have Katohs that have truss rods and other brands do too
>>
>>61001639
that's what tuners are for
>>
>>61001672
Not sure about Seagull pricing, which model? As a general rule, pretty much everything in CAD is nearly 25% higher than USD.

Living in Quebec right now. Sorta hate it but man the poutine makes it all worth it.
>>
>>61001639
Assuming your low E is in tune, heres what you due
>tune A string to the pitch of the 5th fret of the E (an A)
>tune the D to the 5th fret of the A (a D)
>tune the G to the 5th fret of the D (a G)
>tune the B to the 4th fret of the G (a B)
>tune the high E to the 5th fret of the B (an E)

A tuner will make this process a lot simpler but its good to be able to recognize a pitch and tune without a tuner.
>>
>>61001738

Seagull is a Canadian brand, so I figured that'd be your best bet.

>Quebec
Yeah, I'm not a fan of French Canada, but no one from Toronto is. I haven't lived in Canada for years now, still got my passport somewhere though.
>>
>>61001738
That's what I meant.

So if I wanted to use DADGAD, would I use whatever fret on the B String that's a D to tune the E to a D? I might try it, since fucking up isn't really a problem.
>>
>>61001959

I'm in Vermont and we almost universally hate French Canadians. We love people from anywhere else in Canada because they're so much like us, but fuck the Quebecois.

Would've been the best guitarist on the planet if he didn't get ALS in my opinion. One of the only shredders I enjoy listening too. Seems like a really nice guy too.
>>
>>61002811
I think he's great. I'm not usually into Neo-Classical Malmsteen type shredding but Jason Becker and Marty Friedman seem to be the only 2 that appeal to me, not sure what it is.

Someone is selling this PRS locally for $900 USD. Need help identifying if it's real as I don't have any experience with PRS. It's listed as a "PRS Mira Korina". The price seems too good to be true for an American made PRS.
>>
>>61001499
Standard is nice for everything but metal, you have to use a lot of convulted rythmics if you want to play metal (except black metal) without sounding overdone.
D is great for techy death metal though.
CGCGBE is my go to secret tuning to get both low end and high end, but I haven't really gotten to the point I can play it as well as standard.

I'm getting a seven string next though, I really don't like the way B standard feels.
>>
>>61003229
Truss rod cover is wrong. Rest looks right. It'll probably be neck heavy though.
>>
>>61003229
Price is right in the ballpark. As noted the truss rod cover is not original. Mira Korina's aren't korina it's African obeche. Lightweight but good sounding.
Could find an SG for the same or less in mahogany.
>>
Will my pedals still drain the batteries if I plug them into the 9v adapter?

I like 9v for portability but at home I practice with the pedals plugged in, it kind of feels like the batteries are still being drained.
>>
>>61003229
It's legit and awesome.
>>
>>60997983
I think Marty knows more theory than he lets on, but he seems like one of those guys who learned to play by just feeling things out and playing what "sounds cool" to him, which gives him a more natural sound than somebody who only learned scale and arpeggio shapes by rote.

Two things that strike me as belonging to his signature sound are his use of the Hirajoshi and other Japanese pentatonic scales, and his use of half-step bends from notes that aren't in the key up to notes that ARE in the key.
>>
>>61003739
Awful bridge on those though.

I've never had a problem with them. They make some with adjustable saddles for Gibsons. Don't know if they would fit a PRS

Who are some modern strat heros? We only hear about Hendrix, Rory, Clapton, SRV, Gilmour, Rodgers, Buddy, Blackmore and Knopfler, -and modern strat players don't get any recognition. most of the 'good' players now use some type of custom instrument specifically designed for them, some of those guitars kind of have a strat-like shape, but they aren't strats... so.... yea.

i think the strat has run it's course, there's better options for specific types of music now. the tele is making a big resurgence though.

It's handy to have a practice amp, but lots of bigger amps play room volumes just fine. I'd say both. You'll have a feel for your tools by then. The affinity wouldn't be cost effective to mod when good used guitars drift down to 200-250. Good gig ready used amps do the same if you keep an eye out.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm planning to. Traditionally, I think you remove the strings, then use a notched straightedge to measure the bow in the neck independent of the various frets' heights. Adjust the truss rod to make the neck as straight as possible, then use sandpaper and a level beam to evenly level the frets. Then crown and dress the frets individually with files. When finished, restring and put some relief back into the neck via truss rod adjustment.

That sounds like some wide signal fuzz. Kinda like they're trying to do a silicon Orange/matamp. Maybe a little sub octave in there, but not so much it bastardizes the tone i.e. a pog.

Any Sunn is kind of a generalization. The Solarus and Sceptre look to be the guitar amps of the bunch. Ts are huge bassman. PAs have a couple similarities to Ampeg V4s.

Univox is the poor man's Sunn. They're really similar beasts without the hype. Same tubes, huge iron, and similar designs. Their solid state Stage amps sound like rad fuzz boxes too.

Buy a short scale
>>
>>61009415
Write a few songs, record the demo yourself then put out an ad on craigslist/gumtree and link your demo.

In less than a week you'll have a guitarist and a drummer, you might have to wait a while for a bassist. Most people are looking to join an original band but just don't have the skill to write their own stuff.

It can be. One thing that makes it easier is finding a sing solid musician you connect and relate with, then try to build from there. That way when you find all these weirdos and losers you can at least make light of it with someone. That's what I've been doing for years, I had 3 solid wingmen in the last 9 years. You come out of weird situation where the drummer you found on craigslist refused to bring his kit to your dedicated practice spot because of the inconvenience, only to get there, he's hammered, his house is trashed, his wife is screaming(and initially you thought it was at him but after 30 minutes you're not sure because it sounds like a back and forth conversation happening upstairs but there's no one else in the house), and then he admits to you that he couldn't take his kit to your spot because he lost his license to a dui and if they catch him driving without it one more time they're going to lock him up...and after all that you can leave with your buddy and once you get a block away you both start laughing asking, "what the fuck just happened?" It takes the crushing disappointment of repeat scenarios like that where every lead you get on a guy is bad. And honestly, with all the weirdness, with him having cracked cymbals and duct tape on his drum heads, we probably would have met up with him again, but you can't expect to have good results with somebody who doesn't have a reliable way to get to practice and shows. It might have worked, but all it takes is one time of his passing off his brother or neighbor or whoever was supposed to drive him and all of a sudden you're standing at the side of the stage with your sick in your hand asking, "do we do this without him, sound awful, and not get called back? Or do we tell them we can't perform because our drummer isn't here, get labeled as amateurs, and not get called back?"

You'll find people, but it's just like a marriage, you don't grab the first person you find solely because they're there.

Guitar
BC Rich Special X Mockingbird (pic related except I swapped out the pups for Duncan JBs in mine)

Washburn Acoustic

Bass is a fender standard Jazz in Arctic white.
I've got a 60watt peavey bass amp and a peavey vypr 30 for the guitar.
Started on bass (which I still practice with), but bought the guitar a few years ago because I wanted to learn some metal riffs and leads. Comfortable playing chords and stuff too, but I suck at classical finger picking stuff.

Been thinking about a new guitar and I'be been considering a few models.
It's a fight between the BC Rich pro X mockingbird, a les Paul studio, an ibanez iron Label S series, and the new Fender Dave Murray stratocaster.

Any opinions on these guitars?

I've only been playing for about two months, so I really shouldn't be worrying about bands yet. How would you go about creating a band, though? I know nobody musical, anyway.

Buy or borrow a guitar and get writing.

Here is the Murray Strat for reference. It's leading the pack for me. All of the guitars I listed are in the $900-$1000 range

I joined my first band after playing for about 3 months, but it was people I knew, and we were a shitty punk band so we didn't have to be good. It definitely help me improve, even though the music was simple I got really good at timing and started learning to read people, especially the drummer. By the time that band was over, I was able to predict when he was going to do abrupt stops, fills, how many measures his fill was going to take, when he was going to do a tempo change, and when he was going to stop playing altogether so only my parts were coming through. It allowed me to sync up with him well, and it's a skill I've been using ever since. Being in a band early on is important, even if it's bad, because by the time you're good enough to start or join a good band you already have that experience of playing regularly with other people. Playing with people is much different than playing to recordings by yourself, recordings don't change on the fly, people do(be it intentional or non).

As for finding musicians, there's the old school way of going to shows or music stores and networking. Most music stores have a bulletin board for posting fliers as well. The newer way is craigslist and Facebook. You can find groups on fb for musicians in your area. And be careful around druggies, they will try to infiltrate your band to steal your shit to pawn. About 8 years ago I had that happen with a shitty practice amp in a back room, he grabbed from there thinking I wouldn't notice. I did, and this dude wasn't even doing coke or smack, just addies and vicodins.

Give me some fun jazz/funk songs to learn on bass. Also, essential jazz songs

Yeah, same tube types match up. Everything is made in one of three factories in the world and rebranded.

You get a good feel for red flags though. Some of mine.
> the other person talks about touring before you've even met
>you have to answer questions that are clearly explained in your ad or first email
>it takes way too many emails to set up your first jam and for no reason
>they don't share demo material and are critical of yours

>>61010492
You're a bass player. You just gotta groove.

>are the fender mustang/jag basses any good?
Not a fan of the mustang because I don't like short scale basses but it has a good sound though. Jag basses also sound great, a buddy I have in another band uses one and he always gets a great sound out of it
>what are the main differences from precisions and j basses?
Precisions are more low mid heavy, "sit-in-the-mix" type of basses that sound a bit odd soloed but great with everything else. Jazz basses are a bit more scooped and trebly and are great if you want the bass more out in front but doesn't sit as well in the mix in exchange. soloing a neck pickup can almost get you a precision tone but not quite. I never liked jazz basses, for the sound and feel (hate thinner necks), but precision jazzes are another option that should be considered (precision build, add the bridge pickup of a jazz which gives it some of its distinct sound). With those, you get a precision bass and the ability to do a psuedo jazz bass tone by turning the bridge pickup up too

I kind of want that. Low expectations for that price but I'm very curious.

Should I buy a guitar slide to dick around with its like $4

The touring one is a dead give away, just shows you're either fucked up or have no idea what you're talking about...or it's someone who's basically homeless.

I mean, the possibility of someone who chews Doritos with their mouth open while distracting you while driving to show you porn(not even weird shit, just straight porn like it's a novelty) who wouldn't even bathe when he had access to a shower and now the smell has become inhuman who complains if we're listening to something other than pantera and keeps calling his girlfriend back home to threaten to kill her if she cheats on him when he's gone and won't stop obviously drinking in the front seat of the van in a state where that's illegal and trying o poss out the window and rubbing his Doritos fingers on everything is far too real of a possibility. As well as the possibility they might suck, the music we make collectively sucks, nobody even likes us locally, and that we'll all be spending our own money to make it happen. Touring shouldn't even be on the table til shows are being played, aside from maybe the passing comment, "I would be open to touring for the right project."

>>
Also got this strymon big sky digital reverb. another really deep pedal.
>>
While I was buying digital delay/reverb decided to get this Eventide timeline dual delay too. Pretty fun running stereo with strymon set to parallel delays into the eventide with parallel delays...sounds good.
>>
And you may be thinking, why not get the Space too gs? But of course I did.
>>
Also got the strymon multi switch which lets me take full advantage of the timeline looper turning it into a six switch looper.
>>
still have the barn3 ox aux pedal coming for the eventide timefactor. and got an aux switch for the space or whatever i decide to use it on.
