After a year of listening to metal I've decided I should check out the big names, so which Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax albums would you recommend me to check out?
Would you say they're all worth checking out or should I decide that myself?

One thing that surprises me is that I have more Spanish Death Metal in my collection than from Australia or Canada. I always thought that Spain is a poor country when it comes to scene, but I was wrong.

>tfw everyone thinks Spain doesn't have good metal but it simply isn't true, it's just unknown outside Spain due to the lack of international promotion (or just promotion, death metal isn't exactly popular here, even among the average metalhead).

>>61004168
See? I copypasted already.
I heard Wormed, but didn't like their techno cover art. But then again, I sort of like Neuraxis, so I'm inconsistent. I also forgot about Unhallowed. They only released one demo, but were really great.
Need recommendations friends for bands like Inanimate Existence, Rivers of Nihil etc.
>>61004184
cont.
> death metal isn't exactly popular here, even among the average metalhead).
Didn't know that, but at the same time, keep in mind that Death Metal is not popular in Germany (they prefer Thrash / Speed / Power), they contributed greatly to the genre. I have listed over 40 essential DM bands from Germany.
But Spain is something that bothers me, because they have a great, huge scene, and yet they don't get the recognition they deserve.
>>61004207
cont. again.
And the same problem is with France.
France had both their own black circle, with even their own language (Des Legions Noires), yet people only know maybe Muutilation and Vlad Tepes.
And the same is with French Death Metal
Agresor, Asgard, Benighted, Carcariass, Catacomb, Crusher, Delayed Action Bomb / Gurkkhas, Dementia, Depraved, Gorod, Impureza, Krhoma Death, Kronos, Loudblast, Massacra, Mercyless, No Return, Occult (they only had one notable single on Thrash rec.), Putrid Offal, Sthygma, Supuration / Sup.
Yet, people mostly ignore that. Shame, what a shame.
Any recommendations for 90s BM bands that didn't wear corpsepaint?
Anyway, after the quicksearch, I will definitely add Aposento, Machetazo and Wormed to my list.
The rest are noobs, and while I have nothing against them, I prefer veterans, and bands that broke their bones from playing metal.
>>61004207
Yeah, it bothers me too. But as I said, big labels don't really do much for metal here. Sure, you have the metal-specific big labels, but they aren't as big as the others, and even those don't do much for certain genres. Heavy Metal, Power Metal and Thrash Metal, yeah, the bigger metal labels will promote that shit to hell and back, but if you have a Death Metal or Black Metal band, all that's left for you is smaller labels, for the most part.
And then there's so many bands (as you said, the scene is huge) that it's actually pretty difficult for a lot of the bands to ever amount to anything. You either win a band contest (we've had some bands participating in that Wacken Open Air battle of bands thing and doing quite well, see Trallery for example) and get noticed, or you contact labels from outside Spain and see if they'll bite.
>>61004326
> You either win a band contes
This is something that I've seen being mentioned a lot actually, and it seems to be a pretty long tradition, even dating as back as early 90s.
The thing is, I already mentioned Dave Rotten. I do think that he did a lot to the scene, what Spain always needed was their own Sepultura. Poland had Vader, Chile had Pentagram, Denmark had Konkhra, Italy had Necrodeath and Netherlands had Pestilence. One band to put the country on the map. Maybe it is a little to late for that, but who knows? Currently, Teitanblood seems to be the band that fills that quota, and back in the day Avulsed was the closest to be a Spanish Sepultura.
I also know that the guy from Fermento is a Spanish Danzig, meaning that he is a huge muscled guy that is an asshole towards others, which is why Fermento is not as liked as other bands, even if they were one of the earliest.
All in all, I think that there is also chauvinism from people when it comes to searching for their favorite band. It's why an average Swedish DM band that never had an album, gets their demos collected, while a lot of great bands from all over the world are simply ignored.
>>61001061
>Implying Metallica s/t is good

However, don't you tread on me, and don't be such a holier-than-thou mr sandman
What kvlt black metal bands never worse corpse paint?
>>61004410
Yeah, Dave Rotten is a huge asset to extreme metal, specially Death Metal. The amount of work he does to promote bands, specially newcomers, is amazing. And back in the day, Avulsed would have been the kind of band you mention, so there's that too. Nowadays, though, I'm not sure if even Teitanblood would qualify. They seem to be more known outside of Spain than here.
>>61004420
It's really good, it's only overplayed to hell, I cringe from hearing the sandman riff, every guitar buddy I ever had would use to play that riff everyday, I hear it in my nightmares, I guess that was the original intention behind enter sandman, genius really

>That long ass link
>>61004487

Which might be a good thing actually. I also had problem with qualifying the Teitanblood, because they were one of these bands that internet's word of mouth hyped, but when Reifert did a guest appearance on their second album, I was sold. I didn't know that Reifert did a logo for Machetazo. Anyway, the most important thing is quality for me. Quantity will come naturally. Graveyard is already enjoyed, despite being young, but I think that Ataraxy might become huge someday, if they go the route that Tribulation or Morbus Chron went, which is widening their style and try to be a little more unique.

>>61004546
>Which might be a good thing actually.
Definitely. No matter how huge they become here, if a band playing any kind of metal (but specially a band playing extreme metal) isn't known abroad, the best they can ever hope to achieve is being the opening act for when a big band tours Spain. That, or split up after years of being a third-rate local band.
I whipped up a quick Spanish Death Metal chart, much like the Black Metal one I did last month, as a quick reply for the next time someone says the Spanish scene sucks. Thanks for reminding me of a few bands that deserve a spot in it and that I would have missed otherwise.
>>61004785
Wormed is fantastic
everything else is p lame (the ones i heard at least) except maybe Machetazo
Sad but true is the best song on the black album, not a lyric fag, but those are some really sweet lyrics too
>>61004785
Aposento is a veteran band that I am glad I discovered thanks to you. They had their newest album on Xtreem, which is not bad.
Avulses is a classic.
Decapitated Christ are new, but I will give them a chance.
Graveyard is already a respected band, despite their short status
CR is unknown for me
Christ Denied is brilliant. It's a very claustrophobic album and even if the drum machine can be annoying sometimes, it's one of the few brutal DM albums that I truly enjoy.
Domains seem to be recommended in a way that Graveyard was. Whether they succeed or not, depends on their second album.
Machetazo is already on my, too-listen list
Teitanblood is a modern classic.
Dead Flesh is a great compilation in vein of Warfare Noise. Definitely was my first taste of Spanish DM
Canker are a sad story, because they had everything that they needed to become a major-act, but for some reason got overlooked. Great cover, great expensive production, great style, and puff... nothing. Their second album is even better, but they were treated very unfairly.
Womred is on my list to do
Ataraxy is on my radar. I hope that they will expand their sound on second album.
Dejadeath are young, but I will give them a try, if you say that they are worthy
Fermento's debut album is actually very extreme. I would recommend Insignia, as it's both more varied and mature. But their debut should satisfy the goremaniacs for sure
Endless... hm, I will give them a spin.
>>61004867
one thing I feel like add, is that I notice that every recommendation goes like that
3 well known bands, 3 bands known by seasoned listeners, 3 random lesser bands for those who just want moar, and this 1 band that no one ever heard about, but the few. I like it, but it's a pattern that is very prevalent in recommendations.
>>61004808
>the ones i heard at least
Which ones have you heard? I'm curious now. I mean, sure, to each their own, tastes are subjective, and all that, but "pretty lame" is not something I'd apply to any of those (although I'll admit not all deserve the "fucking great").
>>61004867
CR is very proggy and weird, not sure if you'll like them. I put them in there because I thought I should include bands that aren't OSDM-like or facemelting brutalgrind.
Dejadeath are... Interesting, if what they do is your thing. I'll leave it at that.
I chose that Fermento because IMHO it's closer to what they've stood for all along. Sure, the musicianship and songwriting in their newer stuff is miles above, but their early stuff just has something for me...
>>61004945
>CR is very proggy and weird,
If I liked Chococrispis, I will probably enjoy them. I might not liked them enough to recommend, but I will definitely enjoy it. Anything that isn't core-ish, I usually like more or less.
I tend to avoid most of the brutal / slam / gorebands except the essenital stuff, as they tend to be very one-note. I do feel that brutal DM needs to get their shit together, because there are way too many bands playing the same.
Fermento's first album is really extreme. I was very surprised when I heard their later stuff, for sure. They did have this comic book-ish art.
Also, I try to get the essentials from every country. I still try to get more stuff from Italy and Greece. Both scenes are interesting.
Italians literally love kitsch and theatrics. And most of times they play Thrash / Death.
Greeks love melody, but not in neoclassical way that Swedes do. Also their records are usually very spacey and atmospheric.
One of the reasons I love Death Metal (and sometimes Black) is because every country had their own take on it. For example, Poland has this Brutal Death Metal with a LOT of Thrash in their sound and production, plus generic computer covers. But I love it the way it is.
>>61005023
>Chococrispis
Uh, yeah... That band. Weird indeed.
Are you familiar with the stuff some of the guys from Chococrispis are doing nowadays, after the split-up?
>>61005084
Well, apparently they are doing some Classic Heavy Metal parody.
One thing I noticed is that bands that are very jokey and funny, usually have wiser lyrics than serious bands and are more creative. I do believe that certain amount of distance and self-deprecation tends to be good for the art. It definitely requires a certain outside of the box thinking for sure. And I won't lie, I didn't get into the band after one listen. I really had to give it a few spin, before I started to enjoy it.
On the other hand, I don't like bands like Gojira, because I don't like their influences and certain aesthetics that they chose.
Maybe that's why I value Residents more over Merzbow.

Brilliant. As a matter of fact I am learning Portuguese currently. I'm still in the noob area, but I want to learn that language. Spanish is also a beautiful language, is just that again, people think that Spanish is shit like that Iglesias new song that is constantly played on the radio. And let me tell you a secret, I know that people frown upon new metal, but when I was younger, I really liked that Ill Nino song that was sung in spanish. Admitting it is not easy, but 10 years ago, it left an impact on me and proved me that it's possible to sing in your native language, without sucking.
A lot of times it requires a very careful choice of words for lyrics, but yes, I don't mind listening to a band singing in their own language.

>>61005248
Well, if we're gonna admit guilty pleasures, I like Kraftwerk.
Agreed on bands singing in their own native tongue, though. I love hearing things in languages other than Spanish or English even if I don't get a single word. Some of my favourite bands have at least a few songs in languages I don't understand.

To be honest, I don't that Kraftwerk is a guilty pleasure, but then again, I probably don't know good electronic music from bad. And I like Das Model.
I wonder if I can recommend Calvaria - Potega Nienawisci (Power of Hate)
They are classic, veteran band from Poland that sang in Polish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IctjQchIGpU
The last song on the album is some stupid joke, but otherwise it's a very powerful album.
Also, there is Necrophil - Cannibal Sex
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA2F7195407F4BA5B
WIth their infamous Oslepiona Kurwo Zdychaj (Die, You Blind Whore) being dedicated to the wife of the guitarist.
One of the great things about listening to bands in foreign language is that you can enjoy music, and don't give a fuck about lyrics, which are usually cliche or cheesy. Of course, I enjoy sometimes a simple "fuck you Jesus Christ" lyrics, but even if I enjoy it, I don't consider it Shakespear-level lyric.

he actually blended a lot of not-obvious hh influences in early godflesh. The thing is, if someone has derivative influences, then such person will make derivative music. If someone mixed trip hop with metal and ambient, it could be interesting, if done artistically, rather than trying to get a quick buck. There is much more to hip hop than meets the eye.
>>61005352
You're forgetting the fact that he made one of the few if the only albums that more or less tastefully blends metal with dubstep.

>>61005420
*I don't think that

I'm yet to hear a relevant hip-hop / metal album. If you have anything that could change my mind, i'm game.
What are some industrial meal records from this year that I should check out?
Also, anyone know of a decent Libertarian news source preferably outside of the mainstream press?
>>61005248
>learning portuguese
nice
there's some good music in portuguese, mostly if not all from Brazil
>>61005420
Any kind of electronic music is a guilty pleasure among my usual metalhead circle. Thanks for the recs, I'll check 'em out once I'm done giving Thyrfing a spin.
>>61005425
>metal dubstep
The Algorithm made a fun djent-dubstep album, which is funny considering I despise djent and dubstep

Author & Punisher - Melk En Honing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZrTPYPTGqY
>>61005462
Why does djent and IDM mix so well?
>>61005452
Poortugal metal chart when, senpai? We're lacking one of those, and there's even one from Slovakia. Get to it already :P
>>61005446
I'm a metalhead. I don't do hip hop, but I listened to some recommendations long time ago. Sorry that I don't remember them right now, but I think that if you search enough, you will find it.
One of the recent hip hop songs that I genuinely like is this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GVl4vduI8A
I don't know if it's good or not, but I think that if you can create such song in hip hop genre, then maybe it's not a bad genre, maybe only lacks some better representatives
>>61005458
Okay. Actually a lot of metalheads like hard techno and EBM, it's just that they don't like to admit that. And thanks for recs as well.
DUDE DJENTSTEP LMAO

>Poortugal metal chart
i ain't listening to a bunch of shit tier bands with literally nothing that hasn't already been done by countless other different bands
>>61005452
Brazilians don't like to be lumped with Portugal.
And vice versa. Despite the (almost) same language, they both want to be treated separately.
And I know a shitload about Brazilian scene.
>>61005497
I can only help with DM and DM hybrids: After Death, Desire, Disaffected, Evisceration, Gangrena, Genocide, Grog, Sacred Sin, Thormentor.
I would say that Portugal enjoys more progressive / surreal stuff, but they never really developed it.
>>61005568
yeah i know, i was just talking about the language
>>61005533
Is IDM-djent literally "DUDE GEOMETRY LMAO" the genre?
>>61005534
So Portugal's chart would basically feature that one Moonspell album and a plane ticket to Brazil. Gotcha.
>>61005592
Brazilians also try to make "Brazilian" language a thing. They really dislike each other.
>>61005497
>there's even one from Slovakia
ayy senpai noticed my work
>>61005533
I remember when this was posted for the first time and everyone was like "hey this is actually not bad"
I think dmshareguy gave them 3 stars
we posting country charts?
>>61005533
not that bad 2bh at least when compared to other djent
>>61005728
No surprises, though.
Actually, huge disappointment
Where's Amorbital, Apoplexy, Dehydrated, Dissonance, Erytrosy, Insepultus, Pathology Stench, Phantasma?
Also, is it me, or Slovakia is A LOT like Polish scene?
>>61005728
That one indeed.
>>61005747
Yes
>>61005747
Ok then
>>61005747
We are now.
>>61005775
Not really familiar with or don't like most of these
>>61005793
Of course you don't. Which is why your chart sucks.
I'd like to do one of these for Italy but I got no paint skillz
>>61005827
Use topsters.net
>>61005782
I feel like noobs are doing this list.
Where is Chirurgia, Torture, Assessor, Avengers, DAI, Crusher, Dark, Fleshless, Melancholy Pessimism, Pandemia, Pathologist, Scabbard, Scenery, Hypnotic Scenery, Hypnos?
Instead, you put some unworthy crap like Silent Stream, Lymen, Esazlesa, Oblomov, Vuvr, Suffocate whatever and Cruadalach. Seriously, nigga.
>>61005823
Well I tried, go make one then fag
>>61005851
>Behemoth
ale weź spierdalaj dziecko neostrady.
>>61005872
I'm not Slovakian. It's not my job to promote your country. Before you do a chart, FIRST, try to dig the history of your scene. Scans of old zines are very useful, as well as rym and metal archives.
Remember that your chart will inform the opinion about Slovakian metal, so it's very important to give justice to your country.
If you don't know half of the stuff I posted, I say that you should do a quick crash course in Slovakian Metal. And you not liking something is unimportant, if certain band made waves, became a cult classic, like Dissonance or Pathologist
>>61005861
>shitty literal who bands
>unworthy crap like Silent Stream, Esazlesa, Oblomov, Vuvr, Suffocate
Awful opinions m8
>>61005900
cont. Especially that you put the weakest Dementor album, while The Church Dies is more classic
>>61005901
Excuse me for being a veteran and not liking memes.
Can you recommend me some grind that's more punk-ish, besides Siege?
I've started lurking the Metal Archives board lately and at this point I'd be shocked to find a worse community.

>>61005938
>those

m8
so is it universally agreed upon that canada, japan, germany and the UK are the best metal countries?
Wish there was a "Metal that's not black metal from Norway"-chart. If there even are enough non-bm bands from Norway that is.
>>61005992
Good.
>>61006009
UK and Germany yes, but the rest? Nope
>>61005900
I'm Slovak and our scene is mostly pretty shit with few exceptions
Anything from Czech or Poland is better
>>61005420
Just got done listening to that Calvaria song. Not bad, although it's really nothing that hasn't been done by a million other bands.
>>61005980
literally who
>>61006013
There are no charts, but I remember seeing articles somewhere.
>>61006022
Untrue, you guys have a very strong bands. Instead of shitting on them, how about appreciating them, if I, being a foreginer, am capable of respecting them?
>>61006009
Add Russia and Poland. Canada's only good if you like prog metal or tech stuff.
>>61006018
japan's metal scene is great tho.
>>61006009
UK is GOAT and Germany was very influential although i'm not the biggest fans of those bands
Japan is good i guess
>>61006027
It really isn't, if you don't count the joke song they did. It was released in late 90s, before the explosion of the Brutal Death Metal stuff. And their native language is their biggest novelty. Otherwise they are very typical Polish Death Metal
>>61006048
it's like you make the dumbest possible posts on purpose.
>>61006009
>no Sweden and Norway
>>61006013
There's a lot of prog (Arcturus, Green Carnation, Leprous, VBE, In The Woods, modern Enslaved, Ark, Communic, Concenption, etc.)
>>61006009
>No Finland
>>61006078
The problem with Norwegian scene is that it's barely possible to find any band that never dabbled with BM, or was related to BM scene in some way.
Maybe Groms or Extol? But then again, they are christian bands.
posting GOAT jap death
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO2p2KjTnIU
>>61006078
aren't some of those just prog/avant BM though
>>61006109
It's 100% japanese for sure, but with such GOATs, I'm scared to learn about their WOATs
>>61006109
nice, i love this album
reccing this to any tech death fans
I don't really know how to add names.
>>61006132
Good, I will know which album to avoid.
Any other recs?
What's your AOTY, /metal/?
Also listen to this if you haven't you fucking losers: http://listen.20buckspin.com/album/journey-blind-2
Jap black and jap power are really overrated.
Post more jap death

>>61006122
Yeah, even their prog is BM influenced
(Early arcturus was basically BM, Leprous being backing band for Ihsahn etc)
>>61006148
yeah, your favorite album is pretty good, check that ouy faggot
>>61006140
Wow, finally a good chart
You can add in future Algophobia, Cenotaph / Necrosphere, Excidium (although they had compilation), Horrid, Maleficarum, Mind Snare, Natron, Necromass (!!), Nefas, Sinoath
But the list is already great
>>61006169
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnQQoHU7CIQ
>>61006140
Can you list them? I might be able to do something about the names, but I don't know all those albums.
>>61006182

i mean, you got >>>/b/ for that
>>61006239
>Algophobia
They're great band, get fucked
>>61006241
You seem to know interesting places.
Is this /b/ you recommend, a place of your origin?
I love Melt-Banana, but need more noisecore with squawked female vocals. What should I listen to?
>>61006251
Which one, Algophobia, or Novembre?
>>61006279
Both, I misquoted
>>61006288
Okay. Both are great.
>>61006149
Name of the band?

>stuff that has barely 10 ratings on rym

lmao
It's kinda funny how many smaller/less significant countries have at least one token artist most metalheads know about
Ireland - Primordial
Iceland - Solstafir
Denmark - Mercyful Fate
Latvia - Skyforger
Estonia - Metsatöll
Belgium - Amenra
Austria - Summoning
Switzerland - Celtic Frost or Coroner
Hungary - Thy Catafalque
Czech Republic - Lykathea Aflame
Slovakia - Wayd
Romania - Negura Bunget
Italy - Novembre
Portugal - Moonspell
Spain - Dark Moor
Turkey - Pentagram
Ukraine - Drudkh
Russia - Aria
Armenia - SOAD (lel)
Israel - Orphaned Land
India - Skyharbor
Brazil - Sepultura
Mexico - The Chasm
What else
>>61006316
>one source
>ever a good indicator
I hate to break it to you, but metal recs exist outside of RYM. A lot of essential albums don't even have a review on RYM.
>>61006218
yes that I can do.
From left to right:
1st row
Bulldozer - IX
Mortuary Drape - All Witches Dance
Paul Chain - Alkahest
Ufomammut - Snailking
Abysmal Grief - s/t
Sadist - Above the Light
2nd
Ephel Duath - The Painter's Palette
Black Hole - Land of Mistery
Hour of Penance - The Vile Conception
Progenie Terrestre Pura - U.M.A.
Spite Extreme Wing - Vltra
Necrodeath - Into the Macabre

(V.E.G.A.) - Cocaine
Ensoph - Opus Dementiae
Labÿrinth - Return to Heaven Denied
>>61006347
Msot of these don't even have a review on Metallum
I don't think you know what essential means
>>61006335
Denmark has several. Make A Change... Kill Yourself, Invocator, and Artillery besides MF.
>>61006335
Australia - Ne Obliviscaris
Japan - Sigh or Galneryus
>>61006335
True.
Iceland also had Sororicide
Latvia - Neglected Fields
Estonia actually had a nice scene in 90s, but it's mostyl forgotten. Aggressor, Mortified, Misdeed, to name a few.
Switzerland had Samael, Alastis, Coroner, Babylon Sad, Sickening Gore, Sadness, etc.
Romania also had a niche scene, with bands like Avatar, Ultimatum, Necromancer, etc.
I would argue that both Bulldozer and Necrodeath are more well known that Novembre, though.
Ukraine has a huge Black Metal scene. Dub Buk is also the second BM band that people mention from Ukraine.
