There's A LOT of shit in the genre, but that's mostly because a lot of bands with half the talent of Periphery are trying to be Periphery. They forget that djent is only viable when you actually do it in interesting rhythms, otherwise the song just feels like one really long breakdown

Why is The Devil Wears Prada so much better at writing EPs than actual albums?

Is it because since their less of an investment Rise Records doesn't send 10000 producers to breath down the bands neck and make sure there are enough breakdowns to keep the kiddos happy?

I'm new to /mu/ and I've spent most of my life kinda trapped in a musical bubble.

I definitely am primarily a "metalhead" and I am trying to explore lots of new music. So far my "exploration" has felt kinda shallow. I'll listen to one album from one band, then an album from another and while I'm finding lots of new stuff I like, it doesn't really feel like I'm getting anywhere.

It all feels so overwhelming too, there's so much music to listen to, and I live a pretty busy life. Almost feels like I don't have enough time for it all.

Anyways, how can I explore music more effectively?

Anyway, are there any other bands like that guy, TPH and Monolith Deathcult?

Mechina has horrible production quality compared to the others and most bands in the genre just don't do it as well.

It's going to me a lengthy process, but here's what I did

Step 1:
Listen to the discography of everything your into now. I know this sounds like a lengthy process, and it probably will be. But it's the best way to help yourself determine where your current tastes are at and give you a good starting point. As you listen, keep a notpad file or something giving each album a ranking out of 10.

step 2:

Take all your favorite albums (things you ranked 10, 9 and 8, maybe even the 7s and 6s later along the line) Look up those albums on wikipedia and see if you can find what artists well major influences for that album (if you can't find anything on the specific albums look up influences on the artists in general). I'm pretty sure on Allmusic you can look on the "followed by" section of the artists pages on there and get a good idea on newer bands that were influenced by the stuff you liked. It's definitely a really good way to find stuff you like combined with new ideas. Keep doing that for all the stuff you discover, that's how you'll find the majority of your music

Step 3:

Put together a chart of all your absolute favorites on topsters, post it in the chart threads for recs. You'll probably find lots of artists you'd never of discover otherwise. If your having a hard time finding more like a certain album, post it in rec threads as well.

Step 4 (This ones probably the most important)

Don't let /mu/ get you down. We love to give you a hard time about the stuff you listen to (myself included). We don't ACTUALLY care what you like or don't like, we're just blowing off steam and shit posting. It really doesn't matter if you like the shittiest of butt-rock or the cringyest of nu-metal. If you like it, listen to it. As long as you keep an open mind and are a good, non-autismo person, that's all that matters.

I know lyrics aren't all that important in music, but one of my biggest objections with it is death metal growls are just so hard to understand. Sometimes it just feels like the vocalist is burping into the microphone
>>
>>60996098
Don't focus on trying to understand it
Try and act as if the harsh vocals are just another instrument
>>
>>60996098
Some vocalist legit burp into microphone.

You understand more you listen to it. Learning vocals yourself helps too.
>>
>>60996121
Is it safe to assume you don't know the words to most of your favorite death metal tracks?
>>
>>60996143
You learn em over time if you listen a lot and occasionally look up the lyrics. I know a lot of the lines on Human, but then again, I don't listen to much death metal yet I can still tell that Chuck Schuldiner is probably among the more coherent growlers.
>>
>>60996143
No and that's fine with me cause I don't listen to much Death Metal anyways.

>>
>>60993429

That one, probably. Though it'll probably always have a special place in my heart. Can still remember probably 90% of it.

And, tangentially related, desu the parallax pt 2 wasn't bad; songwriting was much more coherent and tolerable, at least within the prog paradigm they've been fucking with since Colors.

The things about Colors is, songwriting is all very enjoyable, all the instrumentals are very well written, the atmosphere is great and it's all strung together really well. The problem is the album doesn't seem to go anywhere despite being strung together well every idea seems unrelated to the previous one, and for some reason it ruins the whole experience

>>
>>60996382

More or less, yeah. And when they DO attempt some cohesion/relatedness, it's on White Walls and it's just a hint or quotation of another riff/melody/whatever from the other songs. Bitchin idea, less than stellar execution.

But to a 14 year old, that shit is earth shattering
