>Moss Icon - Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly

I have already listened to this, but I didn't remembered much of it, except that it was kind of boring. Amazing how taste changes.
No, this is the opposite of boring, it's diverse, enjoyable, varied, exciting, and all because of the great songwriting and musicianship delivered by the band.

The songwriting maintains his roots in the emotional hardcore genre, but it also isn't afraid to incorporate progressive elements that make it unpredictable and sometimes really intense: just look at that amazing climax in the 11-minutes-long title track.
But what are great song structures without memorable melodies? Fortunately this album doesn't respond to that question.
All the riffs sound really original, not always in the style, but in the melodies. They are inspired by all shades of punk: hardcore, post-hardcore, even the punk rock of the origins. This creates a bug variety of styles in this album and even in individual songs, making them extremely enjoyable and never boring.

But it doesn't end here.
This record also manages to create a mood of delusion and anger, a fantastic mood of delusion and anger.
There is an emotional contact with the listener, thanks to some very well written melodic moments and a passionate performance, with the singer above all. God, when he gets angry he delivers amazing moments. I love his voice.

Certainly one of the most enjoyable and diverse emocore release, very much recommended.

>Satanicpornocultshop - Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos

this is something i wasnt clearly aware i have been wanting lately, but i have, it turns out. essentially hip hop methodology fused with an art pop ethos that naturally makes for a vast array of different tones, and one could say styles, that fortunately all know their place in the arrangement. i like how this takes from a broad set of genres (speaking of which this has about the cutest rap verse ive heard so far) but how synthesis doesnt seem to be the goal, but the consequence of unrestrained creativity/playfulness
the "meat" of most of its songs seems at least solid/decent, though with a good handful, i think theyre going to work better when taking the album in whole than by themselves

FFO Shiina Ringo though this isnt as expressive i feel

>Jandek - A Kingdom He Likes

Another cover where Jandek has a cool beard.

Another album where Jandek strums an untuned guitar and howls.

The album with a fascinating 0777 catalogue number opens up with an 11 minute “I Gave My Eternity”. It seems like Smith’s vocal delivery gets more and more fatigued with each album. The howls are losing their power under a certain spell of complete emotional exhaustion. The theme seems to be revolving around another reclusive character who gives his reasoning as to why he is acting the way he does. It’s a very confusing narration with numerous facts clashed. I feel like the trick is getting a bit boring in terms of this particular guitar/vocal delivery combo.

“Real Afternoons” ventures into assigning food with a powerful life meaning. He talks about the table being an altar, shortly before naming someone a skank. The highlight of the track is the leg stomping mid-way through the track that broke up the more mundane guitar/vocals combo that has been haunting his past 5 or so albums.

“A Windy Time” combines a fast lyrical delivery with a fast guitar strum. Then there’s a moment where Jandek just goes for a vocal-only bit. He seems to be trying to make it more interesting with very minor additions but it isn’t particularly working. The lyrics are fairly meh too, nothing interesting to report.

“Your Own Little World” talks about spiders and how the protagonist appreciates their work. Of course he has to end the track in a very confusing way with him just shouting “salamander!” but that’s just the way Jandek works I guess.

Remember that guy who went for a walk at the end of “Put My Dream On This Planet”? For some reason I felt like that guy went onto a trip that is documented on “Sticks In The Marsh”. Abandoned houses, contemplations about God aka typical Jandek concerns. At the end of the story, the character gets his walking shoes on. It’s all so broken up and confusing.

“No One Knows Your Name” talks about being strangled by our own emotions. The strum ripples sound very passive on this track, letting the narration take place.

The closer “It Rang Eleven Times" features slightly more guitar variation with some abrupt slides. The howling seems to be on a more stronger note, similar to the first couple of the albums from this Jandek era. The lyrics feature some black humour about telling other people to jump off a cliff and using the “Splat!” to describe their fall. I thought that was “slightly” amusing. Doesn’t save the song from being “slightly” boring.

I guess this particular style is starting to get old. I need change Jandek. I feel like the lyrics weren’t as powerful as they were on the previous albums.

5/10

Wew lad. Way to break up a streak of great albums.

What are y'all up to?
Today I listened to some obscure shugazi while spending my weekend alone, studying and smoking cigarettes (I should quit).

>Homesick for Space - All We Are Now
The fact that someone chose to mix midwest emo, Oceansize-esque neoprog, radio rock (did I hear some Coldplay?) and dream pop doesn't really phase me - I've heard weirder things in my lifetime - but the fact that I actually enjoyed it makes me question my worldview. You guys probably won't like it but it's better than the description makes it sound; the hyperactive Mars Volta sounding drum work, vocal harmonies and tasteful use of piano make for a good, easily digestible but slightly artsy rock album.

>Paik - Satin Black
>mfw some tard thought it a good idea to brickwall a fucking crescendocore album
why would you play a genre that literally revolves about dynamics and master your albums to sound like fucking My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy?
Ignoring my seething hate for dynamic compression, this album was pretty decent. It sounds good and it will scratch your itch if you're looking for some thick, spacey walls of sound with post-rock builds. Still, the mastering takes most of the punch out of it. A shame really.

>Mira - Apart
A darker take on the Cocteau Twins sound; it's really lush and approaches ear candy territory but a couple of tracks here wear out their welcome after a couple of minutes. If you have just enough ideas for a 4-minute track, don't make it 6 minutes long please.

>Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous
This album is Chelsea Wolfe meets Swans meets Nico and it's really good and varied. I'm a sucker for this kind of singer. She really shines in the longer tracks, notably the fourth one. Beginning as ethereal pop backed by an organ, the song then becomes more heavy, vry much like recent Swans. The second longest track is pure drone ambient with the organ and Anna's voice floating by. It's overall a very impressive album, she manages to blend a lot of style and influences and make it coherent.
8+/10

>Xinlisupreme - 始発電車 The First Train
Most of the tracks are pop songs buried behind ear-piercing noise, sometimes even sounding a bit chiptunish. It a bit too incoherent to be very interesting. It only lasts for 22 minutes though.

idk cause I barely listen to post rock iunno

might do a Branca album next, this Chatam record really put me in the mood
btw Die Donnergotter is at the level of Branca's stuff, the second track is really surprising and I still loved it. of course the title track was the best thing about this doe

i went rollerblading at a rink yesterday, and they played this rap song that had an even slower version of macishtosh plus' 420 song in the background (which was a sample of diana ross, i know).

Does anyone know what this song is? If I could guess, it was French Montana, but I could be wrong.

On a side note, it's interesting how much current rap is sampling lesser known cultures. Blase by Ty Dolla Sign sampled the drowning music from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Yeah I was planning on going to the next meeting, if not just because it seems like a cool club and I'm not really part of any clubs yet.

Unnnnnfortunately I'm pretty sure most clubs are taking a break for exam period and won't be meeting again until the second semester starts, so I dunno.

>Tigran Hamasyan - Luys i Luso
Probably one of the most beautiful music I've heard. Hamasyan plays delicate piano, accompanying a choir singing mostly sacred Armenian songs. Most of the tracks feel like beautiful and serene church music but some moments sounded like minimal music or even Zeulh. Hamasyan's piano playing is admirable, never too much, always on point. It's a tad too long though.

>Max Richter - Memoryhouse

This was okay, occasionally pretty good. My biggest problem was that I felt I was listening to some sort of pseudo-classical most of the time. I can't quite pin it, but something about the whole thing made it seem fake or forced, or something. It almost felt closer to post-rock than classical, but in this sort of uncanny valley territory. It felt very commercial, like it belonged in a movie soundtrack.

While I really can't say any of the songs on here were bad, if a little boring at times, nothing really blew me out of the water. Nothing on here was nearly as edgy as anything else I've listened to on this chart so far. Maybe that's the problem? It's imitating music that was originally edgy from 50+ years prior?

>6/10

Sorry if this is a vague review, but I'm still having trouble determining why exactly this album felt so off.

The Thelonious Monk Quartet - Monk's Dream (1963)
>hard bop

Wow, Monk is a really interesting pianist. His improvisational take on classic bop piano playing is interesting, and adds a fresh spin on this style of jazz I usually don't find horribly interesting. Nice melodies as well, and the band is tight, but it does fall into kinda bland, background music-esque jazz at times. Still pretty darn good.

Amon Duul - Paradieswarts Düül
[1970]

The best amon duul release yet, and coincidentally it didn't originate from the long acid jam like the other records. Psychedelic folk mixed with a little of the improvisation the band is famous for, even though here it's stripped down and actually enjoyable. The teutonic vocals are more prominent than on the other albums and that's a big plus, as I feel amon are better when they write songs than when they drag on with alienant improvs.
Recommended to who likes folk and long songs.

The meeting point of Free Folk, American Primitivism, Drone and Ambient. It's quite an experience, the kind of stuff that seems to be out of this world. >Jeromes Dream- Completed 1997- 2001

I know that using the word 'intense' to describe stuff like this is a total cliche, but that's the only thing I can think of. The massive walls of dissonant noise, the stop-start dynamics, the way they cram so many ideas into such short songs- there's so much going on here! I wasn't too sure about the bizarre vocals at first- both the Lightning Bolt-esque vocoder/megaphone yelping *and* the unmic'ed falsetto screams- but after some repeated listens, I think that they fit this music perfectly. I love the way they seem to be FIGHTING to get through the insane racket that the band is making. Also like the weird sense of menace and tension that the little noise interludes create.

Fucking massive. 8/10.

>Meredith Monk - Songs from the Hill / Tablet

I'm already a Meredith Monk fan, so I had high expectations going in to this. But on first listen, I really did not like this album and how annoying it sounded. I got over that pretty quickly though, and she actually has lots of cool ideas on here. While I definitely prefer the richer polyphony of Dolmen Days, I can appreciate the cooler solo vocal acrobatics on this album.

My main complaint is that a lot of these felt like quick ideas that really could have been more developed, but they were just left to be short 2-ish minute "skits". They're still a lot of fun to listen to, but they felt sort of unsatisfying. It's not coincidence that I most enjoyed the slightly longer Wa-lie-oh and Prairie Ghost, and of course the epic 20 minute album closer Tablet. Tablet is fantastic. Nearly as good as Dolmen Music, and maybe more satisfying, because it more fully realizes a single song across its 20 minute duration (as opposed to Dolmen Music, which detours a bunch). The minimal piano contrasts beautifully with her screeching and soaring vocals.

I think I'll be listening to this a lot.

Amon Duul - Disaster / Lüüd Noma
[1972]

More of the pointless and and samey 48 hour recording. Their label really tried to milk for releases i guess. Most of the time uneventful and uninteresting but there's some sections of drumming and vocals that are enjoyable. It still adds nothing to Amon Duul's catalogue.

daily listens etc.

>Nine Horses - Snow Borne Sorrow
Lush, disorienting ambient pop with some jazzy and glitchy elements. A thick, immensely strange atmosphere permeates this record. Right now I'm kinda short of words to describe exactly how it feels but it's an interesting album and y'all should hear it.

>The Cure - Pornography
Heard it once before and was underwhelmed as I was expecting something like Disintegration. I feel like it lacks some of the crossover appeal that made former so instantly immersive but it's a good listen for sure. Maybe some repeated listening will reveal its true colours.

first time listening to the owl meme, it's really interesting

the concept of guilty pleasures is ridiculous, why is it so prevalent on /mu/?
>>
>>60858964
I was using the concept more so to describe the style of music it was (not that it describes much but trying to convey it's really poppy and catchy) than actually saying I feel guilty for having this song in my head cause I dont

although the rest of the EP with this song is not very good
>>
>>60858964
it's prevalent pretty much everywhere, although it means different things to different people. if you spend some time on a place like /mu/ where the hive mind 'expects' the user to not listen to top 40 pop music, it's pretty easy to feel that you're not supposed to be listening to it. I hear the word 'guilty pleasure' all the time irl, although it mostly refers to stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR-hWde2YsY
>>
>>60859064
I haven't encountered it very much outside of the internet, but that may just be due to my set of acquaintances.
The hive mind explanation probably serves well enough, you're right.
Although /mu/ seems to be very inconsistent regarding modern pop music.
>>
>>60859345
I think it's mostly people pretending to be 'patrician', a couple of 'muh complexity' fags legitimately shitting on pop music and some poptimists who post mainly to stirr shit up. I feel like /mu/ pretty consistently dislikes pop music with some notable exceptions (see: pop rappers like Kanye and Drake, pop stars who used to hang out in indie circles like Sky Ferreira).

Ground-Zero - Plays Standards (1997)
>experimental rock, avant-prog, turntable music

Its at the same time way too scattered and way too much like normal prog rock. Weird, huh? I still like it a fair bit as a whole, the combination of all these genres is very nice, and "Miagetegoran, Yoru No Hoshi Wo (見上げてごらん、夜の星を)" is a fucking jam.

Ramleh - Hole in the Heart (1987)
>death industrial, power electronics

I've gotta give it credit for being a non-edgy power electronics release, those are really few and far between. I can't give it credit for being fairly unfocused in what it wants to do. I feel there are some moments where it reaches noisy, industrial bliss, and then it just goes right back to semi-generic, non-interesting drones. Give me a whole record of the noisiest parts and I'm on board, but as it stands, I'm not all too impressed.

Yoo, I've never posted in one of these before. I was going through a flowchart and a couple days into I figured I'd post here.

I started with the Slowdive album first. My main problem with the Cranes album was that the singers voice didn't really do it with me, but I really liked the acoustic guitar.

Today I listened to MBV's Isn't Anything. I had never listened to it before, and I really liked it, even more than loveless, I think.

Am I doing this right?
>>
>>60861956
which version did you listen to? there's a newer one that's really long and tacks on a ton of bonus tracks before it gets to the stuff off of the original release, which is a lot more concise and noisy iirc

my criticism still stands t/b/h

Yeah, just gonna take it a bit at a time and do as much as I can. I feel I'd really like shoegaze if I knew more about it, but I'm p uneducated when it comes to the genre
