Amon Duul - Psychedelic Underground
[1969]

Amon Duul somehow found themselves playing their instruments and jamming for 48 hours straight in 1968. There probably also was an incredibly high amount of drugs going through all of them and that leads me to believe that they must've really have been empty and drained at the end of the recording. The stress and exhaustion that they felt probably translated into the music as the loud repeating guitar riffs, tribal drumming and tiredsome vocals that drip all over the album. The first and longest track was supposed to be the main piece, with its distorted guitar and energetic rythm. It's really nice when a piano breaks in. It works okay, it would be better if it had nicer recording quality but that's something that they could not change. After that there are a couple of shorter “snippets” even though they last three minutes, but that's what they feel like in front of twenty minutes giants. There's other good tracks but nothing is as interesting as the first song, and the record loses charm because of that.

>LP1, by FKA twigs
This shit was raunchy! I liked the hint of acoustic instrumentation in between the plastic production and it fit pretty good with twigs' voice. However, there was not enough movement of style on this album. It hung a bit towards the end, in the same recipe. Sadly, actually, because I enjoyed most of the tracks on here.

The verdict is still out on Revolutionary Pekinese Opera but so far I have really enjoyed how bombastic some of the parts are and how most of the noise rock elements are built up around Otomo-sans turntablism.

Anyways, what should I listen to next from this chart?

The quite prominent double bass and the variety of woodwinds give off quite a jazzy vibe. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Nordenstam's additional vocals, but thankfully they're only on one track. Do like Sakamoto and Henriksen's contributions. The entire thing just comes close to becoming a tacky nu jazz thing from time to time, balancing on a thin line. The consitency is not really helped by the enormous amount of guest musicians that differ enormously from track to track. Also feels as if the soundscapes he's trying to make become too dense, too saturated. They shine when it's just him singing over some jazzy bass and electronic beeps and glitches adding some texture. It does feel like one of the best lyrical outputs of Sylvian. I prefer it to most of his earlier solo-work, although I prefer his vocals on Japan releases and shortly after that.
All in all it's not one of my favorite Sylvian works, but it's not bad either.

>Dead As Dreams
After that amazing artwork (prolly my fav BM artwork so far) and those fucking title tracks, hopes were high. And the hopes were exceeded

This is a long, drawn out extremely absorbing BM epic with pretty much everything on point. If you don't like long metal albums that don't feature a lot of riff variation this is not your thing but if you want atmospheric (but not extremely atmospheric, and I'm glad it's not), angry BM you can get lost in with great drumming and vocalist, you go hear this rn.

>Lubomyr Melnyk - Windmills
I enjoyed this. Although the title of the first track, Windmills, says "for 2 Pianos" it sounds like more. If this really is just two pianos, judging from all the tone clusters in here, I imagine this piece must be really technically impressive.

Pseudo-technical posturing aside, there were some great sounds here. Both tracks--Windmills (for 2 Pianos) and The Song of Windmills Ghost--have a remarkable amount of energy and momentum, which they miraculously maintain across their respective 43 min and 20 min lengths. I enjoyed the latter more though. It was lengthy, but more dynamic and interesting. Windmills was pretty impressively massive-sounding for just two pianos, but it felt a little long winded in comparison.
>pun intended

The one really odd part of this whole deal is how much extra noise sneaks into the recording. There's a constant obnoxious amount of static hiss going on in the background. Also, there are several noticeable moments with audible shirt ruffling, chair squeaking, heavy breathing, and pedal stomping. I think there's even a sneeze in the background at around 12 min into Windmills. I might just be imagining this, but I think I can even hear the keys of their pianos, which might have been the intended effect? I'm not sure what they were going for there. It had the be intentional though. It's almost as if there's another mic set up to catch these noises. That's how intrusive they can be. While there's almost an endearing live quality to the background noise, it gets really distracting.

Overall, great, energetic minimalism on the piano, but the background noise unfortunately hampers further enjoyment.

Various Artists - Rumble in the Jungle (2009)
>ragga jungle, jungle

Hour-long comp of ragga jungle. Based on how much I loved DJ Jeffee's Jungle Spliff and my liking of Soundmurderer's Wired for Sound, I knew I'd enjoy this comp a fair bit. And I did. This comp compiles a lot of vocal-driven ragga jungle songs, and they all hit so hard and have such insane energy to them that they feel inhuman. It is jungle/d'n'b though, so it does get repetitive and tiring, but its still an enjoyable and consistent living. "Super Sharp Shooter" is the banger to end all bangers.

woke up at 5pm and am currently making a prettier chart w/ a lot more shit. also sozz for being bad at reviewing shit.

i bumped up Alchemy as it's quickly becoming a personal favorite and i've listened to it about 6 times already. Follow the Sound was p great, exactly what i would want to be playing in any sort of party/dancing environment, and w/ it being 80 tracks and +1hr I was surprised that I kept dancing the entire time. Messa da Requiem was ofc good, but that's kinda given as i listened to the Reiner version.
my favorite listen so far is def New History Warfare vol 1. to put it short, Stetson has an insane amount of talent and most of the time I couldn't make out the minimal instrumentation in the best way possible. His techniques are mind-blowing, i've never heard growls or w/e else he does so loud that it sounds like a distorted saw, and the fact that most of the time he's circular breathing on his big ass bari sax makes me exhausted. each track also has it's own sound and different kind of 'experimentation' w/o sacrificing the sound of the album as a whole. i'd give it an extra point just for this niggas talent. v excited to listen to the next 2 in a bit. 8/10

The Rapture - Echoes (2003)
>dance-punk, post-punk revival

Further proof that save for LCD Soundsystem and DFA1979 (to an extent) the mid-2000s dance-punk revival scene was utter garbage. Not only are the dance-punk tracks derivative messes with overly strained vocals and too scratchy guitars, but the more electronic or ballady tracks are among the worst things I've ever heard. What an awful album.

>various artist - Dream_31
>vaporwave

There was this short period time right after the initial start of vaporwave where everything being made was super lazy and super short. I wanted to like the genre for its neat look into virtual muzak but the shit coming out was turning me off. Now after listening to this compilation from the Dream catalog, I could comfortably say that the genre is in a better position than it was one to two years ago. The songs a catchy, weird, and dream like. The compilation is like a buffet of neo-Japanese beats where the artist is not afraid of letting the track length go over 20 seconds. Only a few tracks are what I consider lazy vaporwave, but they are few and far between enough where it doesn't ruin the vibes. Good comp and perhaps a solid intro into the genre.

>Tadeusz Baird - Four Essays / Expressions / Variations

Pretty good stuff here. I liked the Four Essays, and Expressions for Violin and Orchestra was nice enough. The Essays were for orchestra, and the Expressions is aptly titled, for orchestra, with emphasis on one solo violin. The swelling strings on the first Essay, while nice, didn't really do much for me. Maybe because I'd heard this kind of things so many times before? It actually sounded a little more Romantic than mod. class., but I'm really no expert.
>shortening modern classical to mod. class. seems douchey, but I'm really tired of writing it out

The second Essay was better, and I liked the twitchy strings and flutes in the beginning. It was very satisfying to hear those develop into a full orchestral string build with some teasing flashes of percussion.

The third Essay was my favorite, with fantastic spastic horns and loud percussion. The building tension of the first two parts was worth the payoff here. The fourth Essay featured those swelling strings again. While I was initially dismayed, they reached epic piercing shrieks on this part, which was, well, pretty epic.. I know mod. class. really isn't about that crescendo, but I felt like the Four Essays was missing one.

Expressions was fairly uneventful and somber, but was pleasant enough to listen to.

Now, I absolutely loved Variations Without a Theme. I really like the progression, and the mid-song build into a chaotic frenzy, not unlike that on Machine Gun or Parable of Arable Land, was godly. Every bit of the instrumentation leading up to this was also fantastic, and the calm down was great as well.

Variations Without a Theme really brings up the score a lot on this one. It's just that good. The rest certainly isn't bad. It was good, but not very impressionable.

Very decent jazz-fusion record, without too much prog-rock stuff going on, that some fusion tends to have. Instead, it has more Tortoise leanings due to the drummers and guitarist. As with Tortoise and offshoots it has quite some bass and drums focus, which is always a plus to me. And it's always a good thing when after three listens I still have the feeling I have to replay it because I haven't unraveled it completely yet.

Generally like neo/trad folk, psychedelic stuff that's at least a little active (e.g. not Tame Zzpala) and various forms of metal, mostly folk, but I'd recommend not recommending me on that as I've probably already heard it. I also tend to like stuff with vocals in languages I'm not familiar with. Also okay with most -bop jazz genres and the more active kind of funk (either through breaks or the Fat Larry's Band kind).

Magic Sam - West Side Soul
>blues, rock n’ roll
>recommended by Dogwander

I guess this is what real, classic blues is supposed to sound like. Just drums, bass, and a man with a guitar and a fucking amazing voice. Seriously, this guy’s range and ability to hit absolutely every single note he wants to, with the precision of a MIDI keyboard. Each song on this album is extremely impressive in its subtleties, like the tight playing of every swingy guitar riff, or the infectious rhythm and vocal melodies that I can’t seem to resist tapping my foot to. I dare you to try listening to “I Feel So Good (I Wanna Boogie)” and not have a blast listening to it.

The only time the songs get a bit stale is with the slow jams. Though I respect the emotional quality of the lyrics and Sam’s continued ability to impress vocally, a slow tempo, 8 bar blues, sad lyrics song can only be done a couple times before it gets a bit old. Thankfully, the album for the most part stays away from this.

Overall: Some really enjoyable, well produced blues. Sam’s gotta make up his mind about some stuff though. Do you want all of my love or do you not want no woman? Come on dude.

>Deepchord- Somner

Pretty hypnotic stuff, with lots of cool, weird textures and lovely repetition. At times, this thing almost feels like it has a life of its own, as if the sound that it makes is the sound made by some extraterrestrial being, the drums acting as its heartbeat. Doesn't sound like it was made by humans.

Pretty much the same song for ~75 minutes, but who cares. 7/10

>Suishou No Fune- Prayer For Chibi

2 hours worth of pointless atmospheric guitar wank with *emotional* vocals here and there. The charm wears off about ten minutes into the first song, at which point it becomes a chore to listen to.

Lots of people seem to like this so idk but really, really not my thing. 4/10

>Indian Summer - Science 1994

Indian Summer putted out a lot of great pieces that really shine on a compositive level, that are collected on this amazing compilation.

The more "soft" and slow parts use melodies and dissonance in a very peculiar way: they sound hesitant, uncertain, lopsided. On the other hand the more violent bits are a lot more straightforward with more hard hitting melodies, that go really well in the final mix.
There is something so pleasant and satisfactory to listen to this restlessness resolve in anger and rage.
The only track that has a different approach to songwriting is the beautiful "Angry Son", that is more melody oriented, that result in more effective and prominent emotions. Amazing gem that shines between what only seems chaos.
The songwriting also rewards an in depth listening with fantastic and satisfactory passages and musical phrases.

All of this is extremely well played: every member of Indian Summer showcases impressive technical abilities, with the drummer above all.
This only adds to the general enjoyment.

I'm sure that this will grow a lot on me as I listen to it more and more.

Finally finished this.

>Taake - Nattestid...
Very good melodic black metal. Both catchy and harsh riffs. The guitars are fuzzy and play beautiful melodies. My favourite kind of black metal.
8/10

>Taake - ...Doedskvad
It follows the same recipe as their first one but it's more melodic which makes it more beautiful, intense and just better. It really grew on me and it is actually the best album I've heard this month. One of the best cover art there is too.
10/10

>Shining - V - Halmstad
From the DSMB tag I was expecting something like Burzum. It's actually not depressing at all! The first thing that you notice is the vocal style of Kvarforth. He's not doing the usual shriek, instead he's shouting and growling. The music itself is also pretty different from usual bm, sometimes closer to prog metal. It's quite varied but all very coherent. The folkish parts fits very well with the rest.

Pill Friends - Blessed Suffering
Lo-fi indie rock is a tough genre to be categorized into because it's full of uninteresting albums that use the "sound" of not trying very hard as an excuse to not put much effort into their music.
In saying that, I like this album, and it has some really good songs.
I think it finds creative ways to hold my attention with acoustic guitar, female vocals, noise, accordions, and horns, among other things.
It's not groundbreaking and I don't like it as much as Teen Suicide or Car Seat Headrest, but that's okay.

Favorite tracks: Parking Lot Graves, Mall Goth, Suffering

>David S. Ware Quartet - Godspelized
This is nice, though I still need to listen to it more. The players are all very good and there's a lot of synergy between them, Parker and Shipp having worked with Ware for many years. The main attraction on this album is Ware's powerful and spiritual playing but the rest of the quartet provides swell moments as well. Title track really stands out, his playing on it sounds a blast and it's very moving. The rest of the tracks are more spiritual jazz as in Spiritual Unity by Ayler than what you'd expect from Pharoah or Coltrane but great still.

Going to bed now idk what I'll do tomorrow.

>John Zorn - The Big Gundown
Zorn is very clearly inspired by film scores on this album. Most of the songs have a bit of a Morricone vibe to them, but few manage to stand out. Nonetheless, some nice atmosphere going on here, and the final track is actually rad as fuck. Think of this thing as Ground Zero Plays Standards but less fun, or Naked City minus most of the crazyness. 6.5/10

>Jim O'Rourke - Simple Songs
Songwriting here is fine, think of it as a slightly inferior Insignificance. The first track is great, actually, after that it's all cool but lacks something that's up to par with the opener. The main hindrance on this album is the production, which just feels too quiet and awkward, somehow. It's a nice album, it would definitely have benefitted from some better production, idk what happened there. 6.5/10

>Otomo Yoshihide - 2015 Guitar Solo LEFT
This is cool stuff. Yoshihide mutates some of his favourite jazz tunes into unrecognizable guitar experimentations. The guitar has a very fuzzy, thick sound most of the time here. It's a good listen, however, Yoshihide seems to lack the ability to turn his solo guitar stuff in enough directions to keep it interesting. For the first 45 minutes or so, the sound just stays the same and he does little to keep it interesting. Simply applying different techniques or changing the guitar's sound up a little more would have made this a great album, for now it's merely a good one. 7/10
>>
>>60785829
>Richard Youngs - Airs of the Ear
Holy shit, that opener. Such a lush guitar sound, such pretty background melodies, even Youngs' vocals are kinda good. Youngs plays psychedelic folk on this album, using a 12-string guitar accompanied by a plethora of other instruments, sometimes exotic. Not only does he reduce the repetitiveness of his music on this album, but the repetition fits this style much better than the more generic folk found on Sapphie. I must say that the first half is definitely better than the second, though: most of the second half is occupied by a 17-minute track that does get a little too repetitive for its own good (Youngs is still Youngs, I suppose) and the soundscapes never get as interesting as that lush first track or the fuzzy psych freakout found on "Fire Horse Rising". Everything's cool though, and yeah, the first half is just amazing, so check it out. 8/10

>Jandek - Chair Beside a Window
Sacrifices some of the uneasy atmosphere of his debut for some better songwriting and more variation. Still nothing amazing but he's getting somewhere. Wish there were more tracks like European Jewel on here. 6.5/10

>The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
Just a lot of fun to be had here, lots of solid (yet slightly dated) psych rock tunes with a lot of humor and satire thrown in. The more experimental tracks towards the end is where the Mothers get better musically (with the final track being kind of an exception, since it's pretty cool but there's too much hot air here), with especially "Help, I'm a Rock" being a seriously good listen. Had fun with this album, check it out everyone 7.5/10

>Truth in the Abstract Blues - s/t
blues standards in a free-jazz context
I wanted to give this more listens and write a detailed review, but after a lot of spins I still can't really think of a whole lot to say. It's a great album and if you're into blues at all you should definitely hear it. It combines blues and free-jazz without making big compromises in either of those fields. The standards they play don't sound out of place at all. They are molded into this context as if Robert Johnson or Blind Lemon Jefferson wrote them with them with free-jazz in the back of their heads.
Fabrizio Spera's drumming is consistently good. Can't say a whole lot more about it. He gives the others a lot to work with.
Leila Adu's voice sounds like it was made for this project. It's fragile and bluesy and she has so much control over it
Cooper fills it all up with his own style of guitar wank and his own style of bleeps. It's obvious that his mind created this formula.
fantastic album
give it a listen if you're into blues (doggy, check it out)
3.5-4/5

>Shoganai - ショウガナイ
The last several months I've been really starting to really like drone music, but I'm rarely in the mood for music so relaxing that it puts me to sleep. I would have liked it if more artists would take the route of this guy. His music is still very much drone, but it is the messiest drone album I have ever heard. The drones are constantly changing in shape and in texture and it is layered with scraping and squealing and scratching sounds. Listening to it is definitely not relaxing, but it was very fun.
3-3.5/5

>Budhaditya Chattopadhyay - A Day in the Life of a Listener

This is pretty boring. The first track is very good though. It has an intense recording of a pig moving towards and away from the microphone.

I found Twin Infinitives quite weird, it's like some avantgarde noise rock mix, which does sound pretty good. (Edge of the) Ape Oven is easily my favorite track, I recommend you check that out. other than that, not much else really stands out in the album, but it's still a nice listen.

I quite enjoyed Flynt, this is the kind of drone I wanna listen to, not the fucking Disintegration Tapes. I'm doing Stars of the Lid next, please tell me it's not like the Disintegration Tapes.

Offenbarung Und Untergang By Georg Trakl - Étant Donnés + Michael Gira (1999)

Spoken word performed by Gira over dark ambient, there's really nothing that could go wrong with this album honestly. Interestingly enough, though, the best part of Offenbarung Und Untergang was not Gira's performance but rather the ambient backdrop provided by Etant Donnes which could have honestly stood by itself. The title translates to "Revelation and Doom" according to google translate but you don't need to understand german to understand that revelation and doom is what this album is about. Overall it was a great album that I definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys Michael Gira's work, only complaint I would have about it is that it gets a little weaker towards the latter half of the album but I stress the "a little" here because the Offenbarung Und Untergang still manages to be a brilliantly strong album. 8/10

Dungen - Ta det lugnt (2004)
>psychedelic rock, neo-psychedelia, acid rock

Hey, this is the best one on the chart so far. I'm still not blown away at all, but its a nice listen. Certainly a bit bland and a too reminiscent of the derivative neo-psych acts that are so popular with P4K today (you know exactly who I'm talking about), but Dungen adds their own nice little spin to that sound. Solid, if nothing special.

Also it kinda sounds like Amanita by Bardo Pond if that record was merely above average.

Rashied Ali & Frank Lowe - Duo Exchange (1973)
>free jazz

Well, it sounds like a continuation of my favorite jazz record of all time (Don Cherry's "mu" First Part), so yeah its basically really great. I find that the best jazz—specifically free jazz—is minimalistic in its instrumentation, and this is pretty much entirely just sax and drums, with a little bit of flute. Great stuff.

Blind spots for what? The only thing I've found that RYM turns a really blind eye to is classical music, especially because they sort albums under the ensemble and not the composer now, which is one of the most arbitrary and stupid things I've seen.

this exactly, but also a lot of traditional records. they don't get added until long after release, if ever

Sup /daily/, I was banned for the last three days for posting a woman in a bikini alongside music discussion, since apparently the image's presence negated any discussion that may have occurred. In any case, here's three days of reviews.

>Pinkshinyultrablast - Everything Else Matters
This one disappointed me a fair bit. Maybe it's because I had expectations of a really unique shoegaze album, but it ended up being a decent but not great synthy dream pop album with slight shoegaze influences. And while those shoegaze aspects give the album a bit of a boost, they don't really become as prominent as I think they should, and I think the album ends up being a bit flaccid, and for lack of a better word, really bandcamp-y, because of it. Still, it's not bad, and I'll probably revisit it in a bit and my rating may very well change. 6/10

>Natalie Prass - s/t
This one, however, I went into with damn near zero expectations, and I think I may have been a bit more impressed because of it. The album strikes me as midway between Sufjan and Joanna Newsom, which despite being a combination of two of my favourite artists, is a bit unnecessary considering both of them released albums this year. Still, it's some nice vivid baroque folk-pop, and it'll definitely get another listen at some point. Great stuff to listen to by a fireplace. 7/10

>Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again
My first impression here was that it was more of what I had just listened to, which makes sense considering that I always confused Jessica Pratt and Natalie Prass. As it turns out, Jessica Pratt's balance of Sufjan and Joanna Newsom influences skews a bit more to the sparse folk side of things than the bombastic baroque arrangements side, and it ends up sounding a lot like Nick Drake with a psychedelic edge, which I really liked. Her voice complements her playing well, and it generates a really nice atmosphere from minimal playing. You could have told me this was recorded in 1969 with John Cale and I would have believed it 100%. Assuming I'm not forgetting anything, this slots in nicely as my second-favourite acoustic singer songwriter LP of the year thus far, a notch ahead of Carrie & Lowell, but a notch behind Skullsplitter by Eric Chenaux (who, for what it's worth, sounds exactly like what I'd expect the ghost of Nick Drake would sound like; with a damn near identical voice, and some very ethereal and unique guitar playing and arrangements.) 8/10

GEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Also, am I terrible (or just a nerd) for cringing badly at someone describing their music taste as 'diverse' for listening to some arbitrary non-metal band and then immediately piling on Slipknot, Korn, Children of Bodom before calling it 'death metal'?

Anyways, I think Revolutionary Pekinese Opera finally dawned on me clearly. Pretty fantastic stuff, especially how bombastic the climaxes are and how intense the construction is.

What next?

Good Morning /daily/!

I had a very rough day yesterday so I didn't review 2 8 1 4 vaporwave thing but I did enjoy it somewhat because it did create interesting soundscapes but was way too long.

I'm thinking of doing L'Orfeo today. Also, I will upload some tasty nipwank goodie.

Cool! The coolest thing about this one is that it is from surviving tapes while (nearly?) all other albums are from surviving vinyl which is why they sound like they don't have all that good recording quality. This one should have and the first tracks sound like they do.
(The surviving tapes lived in the basement of a former Arkestra member)

>Various Artists - Musica Futurista: The Art of Noises

The first time I listened to this I actually fell asleep. Granted, I was laying on top of my bed at two in the morning, just laying there listening.

Anyway, there's some pretty good music, and some pretty bizarrely bad music on here. Funny thing is that the primitive noise and minimalism-type stuff on here is the good, and the ragtime music is the bizarrely bad. Good thing most of it is the former. Also, while the odd track of someone ranting in Italian was kind of difficult to really appreciate, it really gives a sense of the conviction and passion of these guys, and makes the album feel a little more energetic.

The last piece, Cinque Sintesi Radiofoniche, by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, is pure sound collage for over 13 minutes, the longest piece here. It clips together sounds of running water, babies crying, field recordings of birds, recordings of orchestra and opera, tape manipulation sound effects, solo improvisations on various instruments, and a few dozen other samples. It was actually surprisingly entertaining for how primitive it was. Great album closer. Other than that, the Luigi Russolo and Silvio Mix pieces stood out in particular. Luigi Russolo for his crazy noise experiments, and Silvio Mix for some fantastic solo piano work.

The sound quality is pretty consistently terrible, but I guess it's pretty impressive considering most of these were probably recorded on shellac discs or phonograph cylinders. It usually didn't detract from the music too much.

While most of this is really great (albeit rudimentary), the occasional cheesy ragtime number really disrupts the mood of the album.

>8/10

What next? I've got a lot of free time this weekend, so I can listen to something on the longer side.
