OLD THREAD

Also, what's the general opinion on battle scars? Eyesore, or something to be proud of?
>>
>>60686075
I think they're cool, I love beat-up guitars. It feels like they all have their own stories.
>>
Is there a better demo series than Coffie & Riffs from the guy at Old Blood Noise Endevors?

battle scars are fine

antiqued guitars are fucking dumb though
>>
>tfw my guitar is ultra-clean, my amp is ultra-clean and so I've to tweak EQ for ages before get a good sound
>>
>>60686075
If it's from use and unintentional, it's fine.
Relicing on purpose something is fucking dumb. I'm proud of having rust on my bridge because I work hard, I'm not gonna be proud of having rust on a new guitar because I spend extra bucks.

What about scars on expensive guitar? Like, dings and dents on them?

I know Steven Wilson once said he's not happy until he's guitars have dings and scratches, then goes to show his beaten up PRS.
>>
>>60686075
battlescars? fine, they give the guitar a story, they add charecter, they make it different from other guitars that are the same paint job, model, company, ect.

relicing on purpose is like lying, yeah sure, that story seems great and all, but you made it up

Buh?

So I want to start putting together a good setup but all I've got is a crappy practice amp and a Boss DD-3.

Where do I start? There are a lot of pedals I've been looking at at places like Old Blood Noise, Fuzzrocious, and Mr. Black while sales are still on but should I try and get a decent amp first? Is there a specific pedal/type I should get first? How should I pick between two different reverb pedals I really love? Should I just start with an audio interface and plugins to keep it simpler?

Fuck this is confusing
>>
>>60687158
yeah those tracks he makes and the music he plays is just horrible lol

I've got the pawnshop bass VI, great instrument. you'll just need to get a bass VI staytrem bridge for it so you can get proper intonation. the stock pickups sound really good.
>>
>>60687556
Last time I went there, fucking three metalhead kids that can't play anything other than power chords or gain coated triad sweeps were there, hogging the amps. I mean I like metal but there's a point where it's just obnoxious.
Thank god they had an isolated room where we tried some actual amps and a 6 string bass, now that was fun.

>>60687421
>>60687598
I wish there were more diverse Bass VI, so far there's only the fender one and the ibanez one with humbuckers. If I had some money around I'd buy one and make it fretless for some cool ass tones.
Hell I'd love a 7 stringed bass VI (so a bass VII basically), as a guitarist the string spacing on a 6 string is insane.

Having some idols and wanting to be able to play like them is what drives me to practice.
But then again some people have idols and just buy the same gear as them and call it a day, it's partly a mindset of wanting to perfect yourself again and again.

The more perfect is your playing ability, the better you can express yourself through your guitar. Shawn lane's skills were really impressive yet he didn't wank all over his discography.

Or just look at Paul Gilbert, his picking skills are incredible yet he knows how to have fun without writing everything with sixteenth notes.

If you're talking about how just playing like X makes you perfect though, you're right, it doesn't, but if you aren't a dumbfuck it'll give you enough insight in someone's playstyle so that you'll be able to incorporate some of his playstyle in yours.
>>
>>60687556

Yeah there are plenty of stereotypes that show up at shops. Especially at larger chain ones. Luckily for me my favorite shop is a locally owned, one store operation. Really experienced guitar techs and luthier's. Great selection from all price points. From bullet strat starter kits all the way to Gibson historic reissues. The sales associates are all friendly and ages range from 20's to 50's. Isolated sound booths which you can bring anything you want in to try out. I've bought almost all my gear from them.
>>
>>60688896
I don't really like that at all. Sounds really dry and not tube-like, imo. Like a Boss distortion going into a solidstate amp.

Gomenasai.

So I recently got a Rickenbacker copy in trade, it's a pretty nice build but I'm running into a volume problem with the bridge pickup.

I've identified the pickups/electronics as Epiphone parts (pickup switch has 'Epiphone' on it) and they look a lot like SG pickups except for the lack of magnetic posts on the smaller pup so I'm not sure exactly where the electronics came from. Now on the SG the larger pup is on the neck position, instead on my bass it is in the bridge position. Would this cause the drop of volume in the bridge position?

Also I tried moving the pickup's posts heigher to get closer to the strings with no clear difference.

>>
>>60691097
Bridge pups have higher dcr, so a little more output compared to their matching neck pickups. Maybe try slapping some extra magnets to the backside of that pickup, idk. Maybe grab a couple from a broken hard drive.

If you have any dollars, you could replace the pickup kek.

I share the group consensus that authentic aging and battle scars are great, but purposefully reliced guitars are retarded. And you can just by looking at them which is which. That's part of why I haven't smashed my Les Paul yet (I'm the dude with the seriously fucked up neck), is that it's all beat to shit yet it still plays just fine (mostly) and I can get a lot of good tones out of it. My Kelly copy has its wounds too, the neck snapped on it during a drunken beach party, the pointy ends all have chips, and the back one under the arm has almost a quart inch of the corner worn away from rubbing against a brick wall from when I busked with it and a shitty little battery powered amp for a living. If it could talk it could tell you some crazy fucking stories. Usually involving me and a half gallon of cheap whiskey.

That's the same as saying association isn't causation. Let's not split hairs.
>>
>>60691631
I never said that it wasn't fine to rip off blues lawyers, just that it's painfully obvious when they buy reliced guitars and not real vintage beat up guitars. Besides, can't most blues lawyers afford the real thing unless they're Lionel Hutz?
>>
>>60690990
it's not a explorer and it's not "rosso corsa", it's fiesta red
>>
>>60691661
But isn't actual output measured in volts, albeit unreliably because of variations in how loud a string rings out and distance from the strings?

just about as desperate you to shit on someone who cant afford what you consider as "good" guitars. That bass is actually made better than most 90's Squire basses. Squire II basses are actually pretty sought after, but still very affordable.
>>
>>60690990
Epiphone made a series of kind of Superstrats in the 90s that had the banana headstock. One of the first guitars I ever played was one with a Kahler. It was pretty fucking sweet, I wish I had half the skill I have now back then so I could do it justice.

Most talk of tone woods in electrics is bullshit but you can hear the difference between ply and solid wood. More pieces of wood = less sustain and deader tone.

Interesting point about Charvels, I only knew their Jackson style (which they did better on their Jacksons with the shortened tip, unless it's reversed, then the Charvel looks better) and Fender style headstocks.
>>
>>60691540
This is why my band throws some softer shit in the first set.

More people staying and drinking means you get booked again.
>>
>>60692724
Charvel came first, actually. The name Jackson was intended for the Rhoads model because Charvel wasn't sure if it would succeed or be a flop and he didn't want to stake his name on a possible failure.

Never had a tube amp before. My friend recommended me a Fender Blues Junior. I'm looking for something under £500 and it seems like good quality. Should I go for it or is there something better in that price range?

Just some extra info, I own a telecaster and don't play in a band but I sometimes jam with my other guitarist friends. I like to play post-punk sort of stuff mostly like the Smiths or Joy Division. I also like to play post-hardcore/noise rock like Drive Like Jehu, Slint, Fugazi.

I'm about to make ultimate sacrifices to become a popular guitarist. My good, flowing, rising career might be demolished, my family life, ruined.

But I'd be making money off of music and gain popularity. The equivalent of "selling my soul for rock and roll".

What would you sacrifice to make it? The love of your life? Your son? Your career? I can't do anything but think of being in a band and making it. It is the only thing that will make me whole as a person.

yeah I'm totally lost.. I know you can't be asking me about a major triad but based on what you're saying that's all I can gather. I've never heard anyone refer to a b11 because the 11 is the fourth degree of the major scale which when you flatten that is the 3rd. Your chord is 1 5 3....no?

The hard part was removing the original finish, Squier do a really good job with their guitars.

I've refinished a few guitars so it was not a problem, I just used Nitro Aerosol and Satin Nitro clear coat.

The logo is a replica water slide, I changed the model and the text underneath to my own liking though. I custom ordered it from a company called Rothko & Frost. All in all the whole project cost me less than £250 for the guitar, paint & various bits.

The colour is Sherwood Green, hard to get it to show up correctly in pictures.

What is the most under utilized/under appreciated component of EFX loop.

And why is it Graphic Equilizers?

These little beauties are so powerful, and useful in so many ways. I have a 31 band after all gain stage equipment and also have a DOD that moves around in the loop (thx midi octopus) when I need to color the character of some of my single or double knob boxes.

nah, most guitarist want the "purest" signal path, so a simple tone stack is preferred. Plus you don't really need all that eq power if you're a guitar player, bass player sure you need to deal with the room you're in but not so much guitar. in a studio situation sure its great to have that kinda control but in normal use? not so much.
>>
How does the Supermoon Chrome sound at lower settings?

I know it's supposed to be fucking amazing if you want 100% wet/ambient sounds but is it just as good if you want a regular reverb sound out of it too?
>>
>>60688848

I think that's what everyone feels at some point. I want my iPhone to be pristine. I want my car to be scratch free. I want my guitar to remain glossy and shiny.

But in the real world, shit happens. Accidents happen. I could slip and fall and break my guitar neck. My stand could give way and drop the guitar. Or I could drop a Allen key on it accidentally.

I realize the only way to make it mint is to be SUPER careful, or leave it in the case.

It takes so much energy to do that, so I just shut up and play the fucking thing.
>>
>>60697663
>nah, most guitarist want the "purest" signal path, so a simple tone stack is preferred.
Then don't touch the EQ if you don't want to touch it, it's as simple as that.
>>
>>60697851
not if you want the purest/simplest signal path its not. eq is still in the signal path whether you use it or not. lost of players prefer to even bypass the tonestack all together and just have a volume control...for the mojo tonez lol

i have the squier bass vi

great instrument. few things to keep in mind though. as others have said you should get teh staytrem bridge or if you are crazy there is a mastery bridge you can get. the mastery bridge is like 200 dollars which is insane. buy a set of circle K strings. I use the .106 set on mine. i wouldnt go any lower than the .98 set.

you will also most likely need to lower the pickups quite a bit to get a decent intonation. the single coils on the bass vi create a lot of magnetic pull on the string which cause the notes to go sharp the higher up on the fretboard you play. this is really only an issue with the low E string. This also results in wolf tones.

Well you need it bruh. Like I said, I'm happy being able to throw down at 50-100 person ragers in the five nearest towns. Pressing records and sending them to real music fans. Opening for my favorite bands when they come through. And most importantly being able to express my views and having the freedom to write whatever I want. I write and play what I think sounds good and it's up to the audience whether or not they can hang.

It's completely different when you have to mold what you're doing around the greenback. You're going to be looking at playing for whatever cover bands, teaching, playing for whatever artist and doing his songs. Things change really quickly when you turn your passion into a career. Only elite might have a bit of freedom. I suppose if you're really good that you can set up shop on a busy corner. If you play the right styles you might get gigs at classy joints. If you're not looking to do any of this second paragraph, then take a serious look at the viability of making money at this.
