I just bought one of these. Cant wait until it gets here. Anyone got any experience with it?
>>
>>60666351
congrats. no direct experience but seems most people that have an issue with it has to do with the lack of a master volume and not being able to get the pedal to unity gain...pedal is too loud. apparently you can contact brady and he can tell you how to make overall gain adjustment if you're handy with a soldering iron OR you can send it back to them to do the mod for you. I"m waiting for the V2 to come out with added algorithms and volume control.

Looked at the bridge and it's a "LO-TRS-TREM". Googled it and found this: http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f18/lo-trs-tremwhat-is-it-92937.html
Don't buy it. Cheap floyd style bridges need to be made of good quality metals, and that one is not. You may wonder why this would be important. It's because they operate on a "knife edge" that goes dull if the metal is a cheap alloy. When it goes dull, it loses tuning stability and becomes a nightmare.
Bridges I'd avoid if I was going to get a guitar:
>cheap floyds and copies (including cheap ibanez like this one)
>6 screw fender style floating bridges
>fixed bridges with no adjustable intonation (think LP Junior, although it can be fixed by swapping the tailpiece for a pigtail)
>3 saddle telecaster bridges
>>
>>60667089
why against telecaster saddle bridges? i dont agree or disagree. just wondering. i was looking into a telecaster and just like the vintage style bridge way more than the more modern stuff.
>>
>>60667184
3 saddles mean you're setting the intonation for two strings at one time instead of one string at a time.
Plus if you hit the strings really hard there's more chance that one string is going to make the other vibrate.
>>
>>60667184
I'm the guy you asked but >>60667245 is the answer. I wonder if 3 saddle bridges have tonal qualities of their own though. That said, I'll still avoid them unless there's a very interesting sound produced by those bridges.
>>
How do I /retrowave/ with my bass guitar? I really love that dreamy sound.
>>
>>60667368
there is no practical reason to prefer the 3 saddle set up unless you are looking for authentic or something. just can do a better job setting up the instrument with other options.

kek, doing that is the height of faggotry, and I am the guy who was explaining the differences in sound between guitar models earlier. If you like how it sounds, more power to you. I wish I had humbuckers to use when heavily distorted but that's because I dig that sound.

For their time, it was heavy distortion. And it's a well known fact that they use a fuck ton of strats. The classic Maiden tone is a Strat with singles through a 70s Marshall cranked.
>>
>>60667500
Used to play in a death metal band with a dark purple/guitar loaded with BKPs. Some metalcore teen was telling me how shit my guitar was because it wasn't "metal enough" being that colour. Has to be black apparently.

Picked up the nickname "fuck you red" pretty quickly in the scene.
>>
>>60667465
Funk and synthwave are closely related man
As synthwave evolved largely frrom parts of the french sound mixed with 80s synth elements (f.e. Danger, some Daft Punk etc.) and the french style is highly influenced by funk.

You can get a lot of the flow and pressure of the synthwave style through funk dynamics.

I'm personally more partial to french electro from around '03-'08 like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMwbHf_S9jY which also has some prominent percussive bass playing (though of course cut up and manipulated).
>>
>>60667651
They use fat strats or strats with single coil sized humbuckers
>>
>>60667652
It's the color that makes it metal, dontchyaknow?
>>
>>60667746
They do now. But they also don't get tones like on they did on the old albums, either. And that's what I refer to as the classic tone.
>>
>>60667428
>if it sounds any different
probably has some sort of minor and insignificant effect on the sound, nothing dramatic like, say, using carbon fiber saddles which will actually change the overall sound.

also its not hard at all to set up a 3 bridge setup to proper intonation. could really be considered a personal choice of you know, wanting that vintage look or whatever.
>>
>>60667874
This, red is the most metal cause it makes you play faster
>>
>>60667500
Yeah, it's weird. I mean, it's strange to see someone playing light jangly pop through a mesa dual ass rec, but if it sounds good that should be the end of discussion.

(Yeah i posted in the last thread just before it closed, what of it?)

Okay I'm trying to make a decision about my old Squier Strat.

Option 1) Sell for a pittance and then buy a Fender strat

Pros
>Better feel and finish
>Won't need to pay to get it setup
>Better electrics and pickups

Cons
>Cost more than just replacing parts
>Lose my first guitar (had it nearly 15 years)
>I have no idea if Fenders are even a quality instrument anymore (seen some shit talking)
>Could use that money to buy a PS4

Or

Option 2) Replace parts in Squier

Pros
>Can get whatever setup I want (lace sensors and some new pots)
>Won't feel so nervous about changing stuff
>Can keep my first guitar

Cons
>Don't like the neck, changing it seems quite expensive (so far it looks like the most expensive part)
>Body is still made of shitty wood, neck is still shitty if I don't get it changed
>Waste of money if it still sounds and feels like shit
>Everyone else getting PS4s without me

What do I do?
>>
>>60668587

>>
>>60668542
What style of music?

I think Ibanez RG is a decent starter guitar for metal: 24 frets, the heel where the neck connects to the body is shaped to make upper fret access more comfortable, humbucking pickups.
>>
would you say a wholesale place from china or rondo music would have better quality control for the price. just looking for something really cheap to noodle around with and do mods. i already have higher end guitars.

Squier Telecaster
>No tremolo to fuck because you don't know what you're doing
>Nice selection of sounds
>Easy to navigate the controls
>Fairly easy to fix if you break something or mod if you don't like the sound
>Cheap but not like shitty-cheap
>>
>>60668637
The nicer Rondo music guitars are made in the same factories are Chapman guitar and some Shecters, so take that for what you will.

>>
>>60668587
What Squier do you have and what Fender are you considering buying? It's of major importance. For example if you had, say, a Squier Classic Vibe and were considering a Fender MIM, I'd say upgrade the Squier.
Also leave the consoles for the kids.

>>
>>60668542
SX?
Used Epiphone Studio? Used Squier Standard? (don't go below these if you go these route, you'll regret a Epiphone Special II, LP100 or Squier Bullet)
>>
>>60668587
PS4 is a money pit. You're paying shitloads for the option to buy even more stuff, and the resale value is worthless, you're better off just waiting a few years and getting one for cheap when it's cheap.
On the other hand if you buy a good guitar and take care of it, it won't lose as much s its value.

That's like S1 switching on a Gibson. 21 is still a stretch and a lot of the settings are so similar that they're not even worth it. I'm good with 2-4 settings that are actually different and a simple way to get to them.
>>
>>60669115
Yeah it's gimmicky bullshit from the 70s. I hate the over-complicated wiring on so many guitars from about 75-85.

I like my wiring simple and easy to diagnose when something goes wrong.
>>
General question

I've been teaching myself guitar for about a year now, playing at least 20 minutes a day but I'm at a point right now where I'm not sure where to go.

Here's what I know well:
major/minor/7th chords
major, minor, pentatonic/blues scales
lots of Ween songs

However I feel like I'm in this cycle of learning songs learning songs learning songs and then forgetting previous ones as I learn more songs. I want to play what my mind thinks. I also want to be able to play along with any songs I hear sometime in life.

Any advice?
>>
>>60669312
>I want to play what my mind thinks

One can dream, brother.
>>
>>60669281
I like PRS's idea of just using a 5 way rotary switch for bouncing between everything. What they choose to do with that switch is a different story.

All there is to me is HB neck, HB bridge, single coil, piezo. But I'm also cool with single pickup guitar or just jumping from two settings on a guitar.

I feel like pros just switch guitars if they need something really different. They're not going to fuck with 7 knobs/switches to pinpoint the next song.

Thanks, Black Friday!

I have an idea for a fun game, if you guys haven't done it before. Record a riff in a way that's different from the original. Others try to guess it.

Naturally, I start with an easy one:

https://clyp.it/wn1xo4dl
>>
>>60669531
yeah, I guess it really is an end goal. I have so many musical ideas bouncing around in my head, but translating them to the guitar is very hard for me.
>>
>>60669660
Try singing them slowly in the shower.
>>
>>60669660
At this point, the best advice I can give is focus on training your ear. It's not so difficult to relearn things when you remember how it sounds and which sounds corresponds to where on the fretboard. It definitely does help a lot. I've learned most of my things by ear as well.

It's good and all seeing tabs, but at the same time, just keep learning what sound makes what, and match patterns you hear in songs to the fretboard. Eventually you'll hear a song and know that the lick or run uses something you heard before, and you'll know that pattern. It's not a 100% solution but it does add to your playing. I hope that makes sense.
>>
>>60668947

Keep doing what you're doing.

Master a few songs. This is important otherwise we develop bad habits of just jumping around. Being in a band is a good way to do this.

Learn theory, apply theory, branch out with your song vocabulary, work on your ear (hitting intervals, hearing something then sticking it to the fretboard)

There's a limit to everyone's music power level, but with the right dedication plebs won't be able to find yours. With more, other musicians won't find yours. namean
>>
>>60668947
>>60669754
Even if you put a lot of money into making a Cort actually good, it'll have almost no resale value or interest, because it's a Cort.

They're just known for being shit. There's always something better out there.
>>
>>60669312
As far as playing what you hear in yourbhead that just comes with learning more theory and watching guitarist who's stuff you enjoy/are influenced by. As far as playing by ear goes its 1 part time and 1 part having a natural propensity for it. I've beennplaying for 8 years now and it took me about 3 yearsvto confidently analyze a song.

Just throwing in that having owned a squire tele and an sx tele, the sx had a much better sound and construction. Tbh I don't know the model of the tele though, and the sx had a p90 in the neck. Just comparing bridge pickups the sx was better sounding to me. It could handle high treble without getting nasal, and closed tone without getting farty. Just my 2 cents.

Guys I play fretless bass in my local big band and I usually just plug into the PA system in the room for convenience, but we're being recorded on monday so that is no good. I need to take my bass amp, but I'm not too sure how to dial a proper jazz bass tone. I usually just play prog rock/metal so any pointers on how to eq ETC would be useful.

Sup /gg/, I play bass and guitar (since recently) and wanted some advice. I own pic related and a PA amp which I've used for years for my bass guitar, but my preamp got stolen so the bass sounds deprived of treble when plugged into it, mainly because of impedance mismatch and voltage mismatch. I need to get or build a new preamp, or a head altogether. What should I do /gg/? For the bass I'll most likely make a preamp, but I doubt more about the guitar. I'd like to do some nice tube based thingy so I can overdrive the power stage, since power tubes distortion is supposed to sound different from preamp distortion. The cost goes way up though. Is there a pre that can get me near that power amp distorted tone? How much coloring will I be missing because of the full range cab?
>>

The best I can recommend if you're really set on an Ibanez is looking around for any passive RG. I don't know how they work exactly, but the RGX50 series is solid and all I can first-hand recommend. Everything else is a maybe.

That said, since you're on a budget.

On another note, I'm wanting to get a National even though there's some demos where I straight up don't like the sound and some that I love it. I don't know if it'll sound too "honky" or too bassy or it'll be perfect enough to replace wooden acoustics.

No. The RG470 was only confirmed Made In Japan in 1992 and 1993. Production moved to Korea after that. Post-2000 models are murky on their origin. Same claim they're Japanese, but they're most likely still Korean.

The 2002 model (MIK) also has a Lo-TRS, possibly the worst bridge Ibanez has ever made.

Throw into the mix the fact that guitar has IBZ pickups and it gets more concerning. RG470s made from 98 on wards should have Duncan Designs. Makes me think it's probably a mid to late 90s MIK model.

>>60674610
>schecter v ibanez
There isn't one there. The Schecter is MIK, the Ibanez is MIJ. Just be aware RG7621s have the psuedo-DiMarzios, whereas that Schecter has EMGs. Focus on playability. I'd be going the Ibanez without a doubt though, it's cheaper and a MUCH better guitar.

Yep. It's a Lo-TRS. Avoid like the plague.

Would date it somewhere between 98 and 02, possibly MIJ, but not with the same QC or attention to detail as a prestige.

They go to Edge Pros after that, which are functionally alright, but lack the locking studs of a Lo-Pro or Original, so they're not as stable. They also changed how they anodized the metal, so they aren't as durable.

Sorry about the wall of text, Ibanez models and specifications in that era can be weird.
>>
>>60674786
Oh, Picture is an Edge Pro, for reference. They look way different to a Lo-TRS.

Is there a general consensus on this: Buy a decent guitar/bass and replace electronics and pickups for cheap, or buy an expensive guitar/bass that you don't need to tinker with? It would be a 5-string bass in my case, I'm not sure if I should just buy something like a fender american standard or if I should buy something cheap and get proper pickups for it.

Start with just a chord progression. Try to have a chorus and verse. Then see if you can come up with a basic vocal melody through just improv. It's best to start simple, it's actually a lot easier to flesh out a song if you have a restrictive chord progression in place. When you have written a couple songs built off chords it'll be a lot easier to build ones off riffs or more abstract ideas.

That's basically what happened unfortunately. Good side is old JS don't hold their value even slightly, so it doesn't really matter.

I write right-handed, but I play instruments like drums and bass left-handed. I have been since I was 10. Definetly a small selection, but I like it better than sorting through every guitar brand and model imaginable.

In the 2 bands I play bass in, I play rock and metal. Black Sabbathy style in one, Nrvana-ish in the other band. But I listen to a lot of jazz and play Jazz at home, so I want a bass that isn't just for rock. that's why I want the Ibanez they are known for working with both those genres.

The USA stuff has a reputation for being unreliable. That's why a lot of big names that used to play BLACK and GREEN amplifiers don't anymore.

You could get a Matamp shipped from the UK, but I don't see why you would. Buy an OR120, same sort of money same sort of sound, and without the international shipping headache.

I use it in a tech-death band but it works for Jazzy stuff easily, I used it in a country jam once and it kept up perfectly (reminder that active pickups were made for Jazz guitarists originally).

Really you can't go wrong with either brands basses. I preferred the look of the Schecter plus I got a hell of a deal on it while I was shit out of luck finding the Ibbys. Plus I wanted a 6 string bass and Ibanez didn't make one at that point for lefties iirc.

This bad boy has a piezo, so it can sound really close to an acoustic by flipping a switch.

Absolutely amazing rig dude. I've been lurking /gg/ threads for a while and I always smiled seeing your lefty 8-string and your Stilleto. Now that you mention it I am definetly considering a Schecter if I can find a good enough model.

Cheers man, this time last year I had those two guitars and a combo amp with no bands when I lurked here lol. Now I've got Melo-death and tech-death bands with one going to a studio next month and have two full rigs for both haha. Funny how shit can change like that. I'm still waiting on that fucking BMT guitar though....though it's still fun to post as it gives people a ton of asspain.

Look used man as lefty guitars rarely keep value since they're a pain to sell, had a mate who scored a lefty Omen 5 string for $300 when the local shop wanted $700 for one kek (I'm Australian by the way so prices are skewed as fuck). iirc my 6 string bass was like $400 off for some stupid reason so definitely look everywhere you possibly can for a cracker deal!

I don't like the RG body, the horns remind me too much of numetal

Damn dude, you are an inspiration, for real. Really living the /gg/ dream. I do want a new bass though, I've had bad experience buying used, so I'm too paranoid to buy used.

>>60679164
Looks like a high class numetal guitar to me.
>>
Want to learn bass what to do? I guess the first step is buying a guitar right? What's a good brand?
>>
>>60679379
Depends what style you want to play, but for a beginner you can't go wrong with a Squier.
>>
>>60679135
Oh wow haha, thanks man, we've got a long way to go though, this year was just getting us all setup. Making plans to throw both bands and a black metal band from the other side of the country into a bus smelly bus for a couple weeks and scare the local yodels across the state hahaha.

Up to you in the end bro, If you can I'd try before you buy, I ordered the Schecters blind and got lucky but that's because I was fairly stupid hahah.

>Premium Ibanez
Fuk nahh

>>60679345
Get an Ibanez Universe 7 string and you have the O.G Nu-metal guitar lol. RG550's are more hair-metal/thrash with their color-schemes.

Also before someone misinterprets what I say I know that >>60679164 is definitely not an RG550/560.

RGs are a blast to play but they all have this really thin tinny natural sound to them.
>>
>>60679542
I do like those better, got that Satch vibe

It always does.
>>
>>60679440
Damn, touring sounds horrible, yet I'll always dream about it. There are no lefties in stores near me, besides this nice maple ricky that costs a fortune.

>>60679468
Just saying RG's are nice looking, never meant to be interpreted as a RG550/560.

>>60679591
That's what effects are for my friend.

>>60679595
Ibanez have a great line up, if only they had the same line up for lefties.
>>
why would you do this
>>
>>60679416
What style? What about amps?
>>
>>60679740
You gotta really wanna do it. also gotta be realistic about. Although I imagine a QLD tour would work great for us since we know people all over the state and the black metal band have bit of a following, if we were to tour southern or Western states it would turn to shit instantly as we're nobodies lol.

Fuck man Ricks are great, mate has one from the 60's and it's been through hell and back but it's gotta be the best bass I've ever heard. I'm not too sure of where to get lefty stuff from in Canada man but I know there's a US store called Extreme Lefty Guitars. Mainly focuses on "metal" guitars but they're all lefty and he should be able to get a quote on a particular model for any of the brands he carries.
