I'd recommend to just play scales. If you're good at it, there wont be any need for other stuff. Just Scales + Blue notes and live is easy

Anyone have experience with the WMG Geiger Counter? It's up there in my list of pedals to get, but when I tested it at a store it was hard to get used to. It seems really powerful but hard to navigate/learn. And I hadn't heard about a pro version; is saving presets the only difference here?
>>
>>60592988
>25 minutes
>Nigga ain't nobody gonna listen to that
nice dubs. It*s a jam session so 25 minutes is pretty short.
>>
>>60592997
I just got one on ebay for about £115, which is less than the civilian issue version retails for, so i'm pretty pleased, just waiting for it to arrive

The pro version hasnt surfaced yet, they've been working on it for 3 or so years now and there isnt much info available, but it may have a blend control.
>>
>>60592997
Its a great pedal, especially if you do a lot of recording where you can use it on everything. sounds really great crushing drums. Its pretty simple to figure out, but the lack of presets means I have to write down settings. Been looking forward to the pro version for years now, wouldn't be surprised if it had more waveforms but really the original already has like 240 or something lol. Has a pretty gnarly distortion as far as bitcrushers go

>unlearn music theory
>get piano
>get other musicians
>play what you think sounds good on piano or whistle it
>conceive parts that sound okay by themselves
>make musicians play parts together, regardless of rhythm, tempo, or key
>electrocute them or throw them down some stairs if they don't make it sound identical to how you think it should
And if all else fails, break the guitar players hand

>>60592833
Destroys your tone using math, pretty cool, I want one but can't justify $200 for something I'd use rarely when there's things I want that I'd use regularly. I really want their fat man pedal
>>
>>60592936
Learn different scales, you can also learn chords but what I do that I find easier is learning to build chords, makes them quicker to pull out for me, and my pull out game needs to be on point if I want to continue being able to afford gear.
>>
I posted in the last thread about buying a 5 or 6 string bass - does anyone have any recommendations for those? People in the last thread told me to steer clear of the Stienberger 5 strings.
>>

I wonder if the Tobias 5 and 6 strings are any good. Well, they looked good, IMO, and a decent price. Didn't really play it since that wasn't what I was looking for but still. I have like a $200 Tobias and it's fine.

Learn the chords that you're trying to solo over and the inversions of those chords and play those tones. Learn how to play the major scale diatonically all over the neck. Learn how to add notes to the pentatonic scale to give it different flavors. Like add the natural 6th to give it a sweeter, Dorian vibe. Add the blues note (flat 5th) to make it sound darker, meaner, and bluesier. add the 9th to get some of those Eric Johnson/Joe Bonamassa sounds. Add the natural 6th, flat 5th, AND natural 9th together to make one super scale and shred the fuck out of it.

Pic related. You can even use the major 7th (which I colored in in red) over a minor chord or chord progression if you gloss over it quickly enough. You probably wouldn't want to land on it. But I like adding it to make everything comfortably 3 notes per string to facilitate shreddiness.
>>
>>60592936
What >>60592960 said, especially if learning theory is too dry for you or you lack the patience. Learn licks from solos you enjoy and listen to those solos as a whole to understand how they are constructed, and you'll start to learn what kind of licks you like mixed together. That's what I did, and you can hear it in my leads, half my licks are just remixed from my favorites. For example, I'll do a Rhoads style ascending lick up to a Slash style slow staccato lick, and end the lick with a huge Angus Young style bend if I'm doingm hard rock, or I'll take a Mustaine style ascending lick and have it speed up and come to a crescendo that's reminiscent of one of Chuck Schuldiners trem picked licks if I'm doing thrash or death metal.

Just received a Polytune 2 I got on eBay today. Wanted to test it worked correctly and tried the polyphonic option. I followed their rules-- neck pickup, thumb strum, hand nowhere near neck/tuners-- and it's not picking up all 6 strings. Tunes fine individually, but only 3-4 strings seems to show up polyphonically.

Anyone have a similar situation? What did you do to fix it, if you did?

What's it's place in the chain?

It's not in a chain yet. I just got it out of the box it was shipped in, powered it up and cabled it to my guitar. Wanted to make sure it worked before I left feedback. But when it goes on a board, it'll be first in the chain.

Is there a better looper pedal than the Vox Lil Looper for ~$160?
http://looperpedalreviews.com/vox-lil-looper-review/

It'll be my first looper pedal and i like that it has 2 separate loops, quantization (since im a beginner), extra effects like overdrive, delay, etc... and i love that it has the option to plug in a mic so i can loop some rhythmic harmonica. The downside being that there is only one input so i can't use the pedal with my mic and bass guitar at the same time.

Are there any pedals that are similar to this one that are around the same price or even cheaper?
>>
>>60597763
For the money that sounds like a steal. Whats the storage like? Can you save loops?
>>
Should I buy a PS4 or a Sonci Blue Baja tele?
>>
>>60597790
TELE. One you can play for the next 50 years, the other you will play for a few months and then in a few years it'll be obsolete
>>
>>60597783
Nope. that's one of the biggest complaints about it. The Jamman from the above post actually looks really interesting to me; i'd love to be able to import wav files or even plug my ipod straight into it w/ the aux input.

>>60597737

>>60597951

The jamman solo is boss pedal size, but can store loops, has simple inbuilt drum machine, expandable memory..

If i were you i'd wait for a decent looper to come up used. I got that Jamman Delay a few years back, lightly used for $150. Got real lucky

Look for an old MiJ ibanez from the 90's. Made in the same factory as the prestige series before they put prestige on the headstock and backed up prices. Rg550, 570, 560, 565, 520, 770 are all good (model numbers refer to asghetic choices like pick guard/no pick guard and pickup configuration). Things to look out for would be twisted necks and small cracks on the back of the neck from over tightening the locking screws. You score one in cosmetically beat condition but probably with aftermarket pickups for $400-$500

he's not just doing that though, he's bending the high E and B behind the nut. that's where i'm cringing because it's really easy to break those two strings when you do that. he must go through nuts fast because any little kink will fuck up his whole style of playing and he'd be breaking strings constantly

>Do you guys gig without backups?
Backup guitars? Yeah, I just bring one. I and almost every other guitarist in my local scene plays in drop C, whether they're beatdown, metalcore, or tech-death. There have been a few occasions where I lent my guitar to a dude who had guitar malfunctions mid-set, and just a couple nights ago the other guitarist in my band had to borrow someone's guitar when he broke a string. Everyone's generally pretty cool about borrowing and lending gear and guitars

Want to become professional? As in make a living off doing it?

Ok, ear training, reading sheet music, and understanding dynamics are important. As well as playing without any screw ups and actually sounding good, obviously.

The best small time gigs are being in a house band. As in playing mostly covers(if not entirely) at bars, hotels, cruise ships, casinos, etc. Some of those groups can make over a grand a night. A grand between 5 people is $200 each, if you play 3 nights a week that's $600 a week. You'll be making over twice what the average McDonald's employee is making per week for something a lot less degrading and a lot easier.

Playing original music is going to be a grind. The main guy from off with their heads has been touring for about 8 years mostly non stop and makes well less than $20k a year, even though they're signed to one of the biggest labels for punk music.

If you want to survive off original music, you'll need to be very good at what you do, and you'll need to make something people want to hear. You'll have to promote better than other people, play bigger shows, and consistently released good music.

Why do you need to release consistent quality? Because your first few releases will go virtually unknown, even with good promotion. You'll need to make connections, friends in management and publication, who will mention your name to other people of varying importance. Consistency is also important because once you grab some of the public's eye, if you release something that's not worth buying you may not get a second chance to prove yourself.

It's hard to break into music, you may have to compromise what integrity you have while you compete with many other like minded people attempting the same thing. It becomes very hard work. I gave up on it because I stopped enjoying it. I'm much happier working a regular gig and doing music in the evening and on weekends.

I wish you the best of luck, it's hard but not impossible.

Sure they do, but remember most of the sound comes from the amp. Ampegs are damn good amps though, despite how fucking expensive they are.
>>
>>60602592
you're right, the tonewood is what really matters
>>
>>60602592
relax, no one here can afford effect pedals that actually affect the sound so we all fret about trivial shit to make ourselves feel better.
>>
>>60602592
Strings are literally the thing that affects the tone the most, on any guitar/bass.
>>
How do I pick like Paul Gilbert ? I can't seem to get that "alternate picking across strings" kind of thing, even though sweeping or tremolo isn't a problem.
vid related, I can't get the intro right.

It's in the picking hand
>>
>>60602667
If it was easy he wouldn't be famous.
>>
>>60602667
I've been working on my speed with Gilbert licks too.
Three things are essential:
1. Use a metronome
2. Start slow and be able to play it cleanly every time before speeding. Be honest with yourself!
3. Analyze his picking style. It's not always straight alternate picking. A lot of legato combined with alternate picking. Try to position yourself so that you change strings on an upstroke.

Good stuff to watch is Troy Grady's youtube channel. He explains a lot about a lot of fast picking artist's technique (malmsteen, gilbert, eric johnson) with slow motion video analyzing and clear instructions.
>>
>>60602667
>>60602721
Oh, it's hard work. A lot of hard work. Don't expect to be able to pick 16th notes at 200 bpm in a month
>>
>>60602656
Thanks for making me feel bad...
>>
>>60602693
Yeah I guess, but my picking hand gets "stuck in the strings" when I try to switch from one string to another.
Playing it with economy picking resolves the problem, but it lacks that aggressive pick noise, which I want.

>>60602681
Imagine
five drills

>>60602721
>>60602733
I always applied the metronome and the tempo increase, but I'll try to actually look this time. Never heard of Troy Grady's channel, but that sounds nice, Bumblefoot did something similar and it gives a lot of insight on how to sound more like some more famous guitarists.

Also, does anyone understand how Tosin Abasi holds his pick ? Because I tried doing like him (I've got a hitchhiker's thumb so no I'm not breaking anything) and it just doesn't work.

i'm not a gearhead at all but as a teacher for over 10 years now i can safely say that you don't earn the right to have a nice instrument, everyone should go for it if they feel passionate about it.

>>
>>60603344

it is, but some people are in it for that. some people are indulging a collector's interest as much a creative one. i used to scoff at them but now i think there's nothing wrong with that, nothing that corrupts the art form.

most of my students are much richer than me and have much more gear than i had growing up. do they get the most out of it? no, to be honest they don't, but they might do one day and the fact that they get to play around with it is good for their development - in my experience rather than getting distracted from their playing by gearlust it works the other way round, and effects/advanced techniques on new instruments are a good way of generating ideas.

been playing acoustic guitar for half a year, gotten fairly decent playing at stuff like le jailbird guitar man despite starting quite late in life

anyhow, i was recently given a semi-acoustic guitar and i can't for the life of me get used to playing it, especially not with an amp and headphones

granted, the acoustic guitar i've been playing on is mongo sized and clearly a beginners guitar, afaik the guy i got it off even used to have it for music classes at an elementary school

either way, where does one start with a guitar like this? for all intents and purposes the guitar looks and feels just like any electric guitar but makes a bit more noise on it's own. should i just try to play all the stuff i've been playing until it feels right? is there anything else to think about?
