>that cover art

this album really does things to me. i can't believe i had never listened to it before yesterday. just last week i was still thinking "who would listen to a single genre for an entire month"? i think i can admit i was wrong, and have been wrong for however many years i've decided to let this pass me by. honestly, i thought that my knowledge of the first/second wave of black metal was a lot more detailed than it turned out to be. i'm considering trying this with other genres, it's already been so interesting to engross myself entirely in black metal and discover albums and bands that i never even knew i missed, along with finally listening to albums i had always intended to but just never got around to. thanks, guys

anyway the stuff he says in TV interviews is very PC compared to what he says in magazines and whatnot. He's a thelemite, he doesn't make music for cathartic purposes but to empower himself because muh magick.
>>
>>60298178
It's not the worst drumming I've ever heard, but triggering the kicks was a huge mistake. The only time you even notice the poorness of Abbath's performance is when he tries to do 16th notes on the bass drum, which is super clicky. Pity they didn't get Hellhammer to actually record, then we might have an album on par with PH.

I really can't fathom how you can find them boring. At least not their old or recent stuff. it's true that around the 2000s their songwriting was very static and somewhat unengaging, but since Demigod they've put out tons of bombastic, really anthemic songs with a lot of character.
I have trouble finding bands that convey that big dramatic Miltonian vibe as well as they do.

There are many great black metal albums, full of very good songs, but not quite so many great songs. I mean songs that are memorable on their own and really stand out in a band's work as much as their best albums would.

What are your favorite songs and why do you like them so much?

Since I'm seeing The CNK up there I have to mention Get a Gun, Shoot at Random. It's the song that got me into industrial metal.

Up until that point I took the austere, grim aesthetic of Black Metal very seriously to the point where I wouldn't allow myself to listen to anything that seemed even remotely tied with the "urban nu-metalhead" stereotype. I couldn't stand anything that dealt with current real-world topics and reminded me in any way of chavs. I found all that stuff way too vulgar and unimaginative.

Get a Gun, Shoot at Random changed all that. It instantly took me back to when I was 14 and planned a school massacre with my buddies before they pussied out on me. It felt transgressive in a new way, because unlike all the metal I'd listened to up to that point, it was gleefully and unapologetically edgy. There was no attempt to poetize or romanticize mass murder, to add a layer of drama or second degree to it, or to drown its impact under the pretense of making art. It was just straight-up murderous exhilaration and the pure rush of joy you get from punching someone you don't like for no good reason, just for the fun of it. It sounded badass and macho in a new, very down-to-earth and relatable way, in a FUN way, in a "first time playing Doom" way. It glorified juvenile anger so much and so accurately that I no longer felt ashamed of being associated with that demographic I mentioned earlier, because I knew that industrial metal could be Metal in the most essential sense of the term, and induce pure joy without being poppy or silly.

Whenever I try to describe the feel of IBM I come back to this song, because it condenses what IBM is about: turning Black Metal into a weapon.

Mayhem-Life Eternal, because i love the song just like the rest of the album but it feels intensely personal to me

Behemoth-Chant Of The Eastern Lands, it's that Darkthrone style icy and comfy BM a it's apex

Midnight Odyssey-When Death Comes Crawling, it's one of the more emotional songs in what i consider a very emotional song

i'll just keep it at that, i mean, it's hard for me to pick out individual songs

Deathspell Omega - Procreation Epidemic: This is to me the best black metal song. Obviously not the best composed (even by the band), the most catchy or anything, but it just such an absolute statement, both thematically and sonically of what bm is. For such a varied genre it is impossible to sum it up in one song, so this is more of a symbolic thing.

One of the very interesting things about Ultraviolence Ãœber Alles is that it revels in all the teenage fantasies BM fans usually try to distance themselves from, while also calling BM fans "underage porn addicts", and returning to the trve kvlt metalheads every insult they might address to the CNK.
They were explicitly out to make the most offensive BM album possible and piss off absolutely everyone.
This is an attitude that's typically French. We don't scoff at shock value, we embrace it.

someone was askin me about Porta Nigra in the last thread and since they're my favorite discovery of NBBMN this year i figured i'd share
Porta Nigra - Fin De Siècle (2012)
Very German (lite) Avant-Garde BM with a lot of gothy post-punk influence some nice baritone cleans, good melodies. Really captures the "decadent" vibe they go after

Much more militaristic than the previous but still maintaining all the vibe of the previous
not quite as good as the first IMO but still one of the better BM releases of this year

Summoning - Farewell

I mean, fuck, who doesn't love Farewell?
How is it not one of the greatest BM songs of all time?
It's not quite my favorite Summoning song (that would be Land of the Dead or maybe Mirdautas Vras) but I can safely say that it's their most grandiose song, and that's saying something. A lot of sympho black is grandiose, but Farewell is one rank above all of it, Farewell is MAJESTIC, and that's special.

And oddly enough, it ISN'T about the Lord of the Rings, it's about Elric of Melniboné. It prompted me to read Elric's Saga and let me tell you, Moorcock doesn't have shit on Summoning. Farewell singlehandedly made me feel more wonder, amazement and solemn respect than all of those books combined. It has an amazingly strong evocative power, I can't listen to it without picturing armored lancers guarding snowy mountain passes, dragons swooping between the clouds and Elric's white hair flowing from underneath a black winged helmet, and this is enhanced by how vague and context-dependant the lyrics are, there's even that little bit of narration ("and at the gates the trumpets rang") that can't be connected to anything in the books but entices me to imagine a whole narrative to connect the chorus, the verses and the music itself into a grand epic that's too magnificent to be laid out in narrative form. Maybe that's why the lyrics aren't more descriptive, it's because the song itself is too inspiring to be enclosed in the boundaries of a single finished story.

People often mention Emperor as the best symphonic BM band. Emperor made tons of incredibly intricate songs, but they didn't come up with Farewell, so I can't agree with that.

Am I alone in that case or can a nigga relate?

>I mean, I don't even really like black metal outside of Deafheaven and Liturgy

how the fuck do you want me to explain the appeal of a genre to you when we obviously have such a different perspective on music?

assuming this isn't mid tier b8, which it is, how about ''Black metal is good because it sounds genuine''? Seems like an alienating concept for someone like, because although you ARE baiting , because saying Darkthrone has shit riffs and following it up by saying you like Deafheaven, which LITERALLY does not have riffs, it's not even a riff based album, it's a sign of a unexperienced b8ter, but outside of here it's also a sign of someone being a plain hipster retard parroting some pseudo indie site's opinion, and unfortunately these people do exist

if you're baiting, consider better life choices, if you are actually for real, then viper urself my man

Sunbather is an heavily texture based album, the songs are formed by patterns, motifs and melodies that alternates continuously, not riffs, and the few riffs that pop up there are bland, and blatantly so

New Bermuda is literally Slipknot tier riffs with mediocre atmoblack influence

i know this sounds a bit stereotypical, but have you tried discovering music for yourself, and having said music being a product of actual humanity, sincerity and empathy (and this goes for you as a person)? Instead of corporate decisions?

also this >>60301440, this is your first time listening to an entire, hugely sprawling genre, so making assumptions that quickly lead me to believe that:
a: you don't treat music like the art it is
b: you're parroting someone else opinion (and not even that opinion is genuine)

If you can't appreciate the riffs and structure of a track like "Skald av Satans sol" and somehow think Liturgy writes better riffs, then there's not much I can say to you that can explain how ridiculous that is. Similarly, if you think Darkthrone's vocals, and especially those on "Transilvanian Hunger" are somehow "boring" compared to the generic BM/screamo vocals of Liturgy and Deafheaven, then there's really nothing I can say. Your perspective is just completely alien to me. That's not an exaggeration; you might as well be from fucking outer space.

But in all likelihood, you actually are baiting.
