>listen to 2 years of /mlp/ pissing and moaning about the show going downhill after season 3
>just now watched seasons 4&5 in the span of a week
>enjoyed the show so much I tear up at the end of every episode
>Friendship literally became magic
>fucking loved the episode with Troublehooves
>totally fucking loved the entire situation with the CMC's earning their cutie marks
>cried like a bitch when they turned the roots of the Golden Oak Library into a chandelier for Twilight
>in stead of running the show into the ground when the main characters almost fully developed, the writers decide to give them the hardest, most rewarding challenge to face: helping others develop as well
>people are not happy with this

I guess some people just earn their cutie marks in whining like a bitch.

Anything specific about S4? S3 is where I was immersed the least. Mid season 4 felt like it had way too much appol in it for my taste.
>>
>>25802908
Yeah, not an objectionable amount of apple, but definitely a bit apple-heavy. Mostly I just thought that they didn't know what the hell they wanted to do with princess twilight in four, and by five they figured it out.

s4 is damage control for Twilicorn
s5 is general damage control
In the end the show lost points because the marketing has completely won and is the top priority over any kind of good storytelling or world building. At least in s1 they tried a bit.
>>
ponyfag veteran here, been watching since S1 and here's my honest opinion on this shit;

Season 1 and 2 were the best, all in all considering it's what brought me into the show and was actually kind of nice to watch, Sarcastic Twilight was nice too (y'know, before she became princess mary sue)

Season 3 was just complete garbage imo, I didn't like any of the episodes, and only being 13 in total made it even more obvious that it was just a rushed piece of shit. There were some nice moments, but they don't make up for everything else. The princess shit was the cherry on top that made it even worse, as well.

Season 4 and 5 is... eh... honestly kind of disappointing

S4 just had lack of character, Twilight was completely different, has to refer to being a princess at least once an episode, has to be 100% serious, no sarcasm like I remembered her by, ruined.

And S5 was kind of alright, but the conclusion to a lot of the episodes felt empty. The only one I'll legitimately remember is the cutie mark episode, and that's because I was anticipating it for years. And even through the excitement, it felt a bit rushed, considering they get their marks in the last literal 3 minutes of the episode.

tl;dr In a veteran's perspective, after Season 2 ended the show just kind of dropped. My opinion may be shit to some, but oh well.
>>
>>25802957
I want to press my luck and keep going.

Aside from twilight, I mostly liked four's individual episodes, even if they felt a little unfocused as a whole. They were trying out new things and it came off as a bit all over the place, but it set the stage well for five, which I liked quite a bit.
>>
>>25802787
Most people agree that season 4 and especially season 5 are better than season 3.
>>
>>25802787
I know you're a twifag and you know she hasn't been written well after S3

Correct me if I am wrong, but general consensus on /mlp/ appears to be:

Season two: EVEN BETTER
Season three: DISAPPOINTING
Season four: BETTER THAN THREE, WORSE THAN ONE OR TWO

Got on the ride in early season 2, before Derpy became canon. Not dismissing your stance entirely, but in the event that the early episodes are the best at anything at all, I hope you're taking into account what the early episodes are actually the best at.

The early episodes were warm, open-ended, inviting. The nostalgia and early formative hours of the show don't serve the same purposes as episodes nowadays. Maybe you're smarter than most and are completely aware of this, but a great number of people who hold the stance that the early seasons were superior simply are afraid to admit what I just illustrated.

>>25803082
Just giving you the (You) you worked so hard for.

>>25803009
Agreed once again. I saw season 4 was a lossless springboard for the rest of the show and still gripping on its own. I did like that they touched on more applicable end-of-show morals, though. Like how accepting lies can hurt you in the long run. That lesson alone is everything our species needs IRL.It's too bad I found that episode to be boring as hell up into the last ~5 minutes.

The finale of season 4 blew my mind, though. I wouldn't have been that upset if they ended it there, really, with friendship literally becoming magic and all.
>>
>>25803191
>Just giving you the (You) you worked so hard for.
Not that anon, but thanks for showing off how pointless is to argue shit with you. All you really want is an echo chamber of hugboxing.

>>
>>25803217
It is quite pointless to argue with somebody who is right. When you're not interested in being right yourself, that is.
>>
>>25803191
You make a fair point that the early episodes aren't god-tier, and there can be better episodes than the ones in season 1 and 2, but it's the nostalgia from watching since season 1 that makes me think back to how fun it was to watch the first episodes as they aired, and that I can't get them back. Kind of simulates a sort of "nothing can be better than those episodes I saw years ago" type of deal. Regardless, this is all an opinion game anyways. Maybe we can all have an agreement when the show is finally over.

Can you give me a really purposeful and calculated explanation as to why people insinuate that Twi was ever written in a way that suggested the writers didn't know what they were doing?

The way I see it, season 4 had the best of her. I know my obsessive Twifaggery is unmatched, but hear me out.

In a way, she is the de facto main character to a degree. She can't be treated like every other character. For the health of the show in general, she needs room to grow, trials to face, and flaws. Hence why I dismiss the people who call her a mary sue as complete fucktards; She has a worse track record for mental breakdowns and making mistakes than any other character in the show.

And really, isn't being somewhat flaky and transient in her character throughout season 4 just an additive to how well she really was written? She just became a princess. There's a great reason the writers might have seemed like they didn't know what to do with Twilight.

She didn't know what to do with herself, either. That's what the entirety of season 4 was about.
>>
Got on the ride at season 5, watched all seasons. Can't say any season I hate nor really any particular episode but for one really.

I really hate the breezies episode. That one I just can't stand to watch. Every other episode either I get a few chuckles, enjoy it or it's meh... But even the meh episodes I may not always care to watch all the time,
I can't hate them.
>>
>>25803272
Ponychan
>>
>>25803321
If you want to say that the writers intended for her to not yet be comfortable in her position during season four, then yes, she was written perfectly fine. My objection was that I don't think that was the writer's intention.

>>25803357
Have we really gotten to the point where civility is so unacceptable that you don't even deem me worth the three greater than symbols it would take to tell me to fuck off properly?
>>
>>25803321
I agree with you on many parts of your last statement. I too never felt Twilight as a Mary Sue and even though I can see the other side to a degree. As you stated, that bitch is flawed as hell.

But if not with out flaws, she would be a mary sue and flat as cardboard but she isn't. Twilight has quite a bit of depth as do all characters and I think why seasons 3-4 were so ill received was due to the new direction and story arc. Suddenly we were venturing onto new territory and outside ponyville as the characters were realizing a much larger purpose.

'Get over' Yeah like that would ever happen. Many still can't get over the alicorn thing. I still wonder is it the wings or the princess thing that ticks people the most off? (Rhetorical)

I do miss some of the more simpler every day slice of life but I do enjoy a good story. And what sucked me into MLP was curiosity of lore. I am a sucker for lore with in anything. And seeing how much greek influences of myth is sprinkled throughout the series, I am always on the look out for what new things they would introduce. But it hard to introduce new things if you are always at the same place. IE Ponyville. The map concept (even though reminds me of Fable III) Has this Round Table feel to it as well and drives the plot to go outside ponyville. Also makes ponyville seem that much smaller as it grows the drive of the main six as "you larger than you think."

>>
>>25802787
I agree with this. Been on the ride since the end of season 1. While episodes are different now than what they were when the show started, I never saw the changes as being bad. Sure some episodes are better than others but every season has that. I have yet to find a season I didn't enjoy overall and I still enjoy each of the characters as they have evolved over time.

I guess one reason is because I don't over analyse the show, trying to break everything down into detail and picking it apart. Do that enough and you lose the magic that brought you into loving the show and the characters.
>>
>>25803701

I loved the Troublehooves episode so much because it alluded to the cutie marks I didn't even know they were going to earn at the time.

I only teared up when they earned them, but I love what they earned them in. It really does reflect my own life. I'm mature, in touch with myself, and easy to please. The only thing left for me in life is the rare opportunity to help other people find themselves as well. When the CMC earned their cutie marks in what I primarily did with my life, I was knocked off my feet.

I feel sorry for voluntarily blind people who weren't frothing at the mouth with approval of their cutie marks.

I always had a love hate relationship with Twilight. She reminds me so much of myself...It kinda scary. I always knew there was something bigger planed for twilight, after all, being a protege of a princess at a school of magic, as if there isn't something bigger.

The only thing that makes me tug at my collar is how quickly the show deals with antagonists, be it a threshold guardian, shadow or villain. And how there is even this Harry Potter feel as especially with the season finally, Twilight's friendship is what creates balance and order throughout equestia. That sorta a big thing to state. I get the whole snow ball effect they explained but there is this je ne sais quoi about it.

>>

Heck I love the show because it is a cartoon, made for children. And yet, it uses fluid animation (even though sometimes some times it does looks stilted it still is of quality) Good writing. But most of all good direction.

I couldn't believe that the director would incorporate Film Theory into the show. From high key and low key lighting to Mise en Scene. And the more I see, the more I appreciate it for what it is.

I like the sound of my own voice, so I'll expand on that.

My preteen years were spent with zero responsibilities or worries, meaning my entire life was nothing but a constant pursuit of entertainment. It lead to a tendency to really bleeding out every last possible drop of amusement in everything I could get my hands on. Hobbies quickly stopped being enough for me and I had to look elsewhere for fulfillment.

I failed to find an adequate source of fulfillment for around 5 years and turned into a complete asshole. I even delved into homophobia. I became everything I hate in the world.

When I turned 16, I got this crazy idea in my head that in stead of crushing the emotionally distraught girl I had wrapped around my finger just to feel better about myself, maybe I could try using my manipulative grip on her to help her grow in stead.

2 weeks later, her older sister took her laptop for a few minutes and bawled her eyes out to me over Skype about how her little sister stopped cutting herself, stopped overmedicating, quit sleeping during the day and actually smiled a little bit and went outside and made friends.

Then she asked me: "Are you doing this?"

I looked in my mental mirror and saw A putrid soul who had a five year track record of reducing hurting other people to a science, and it hit me like a truckload of bricks: I had brought somebody from rock bottom with just words.

Nothing has ever hit me that hard. That really was the closest thing to earning a cutie mark that I'll ever have, and I'm more than fine with that.

God damn I needed to get that off my chest.
>>
>>25803871
Somehow I factually recognize this has a good deal of applicablity to it, yet it doesn't phase me.

>>25803921
Really, the "made for children" song and dance is completely horse shit, isn't it?

Faust's primary vision for the entire show was to apply a strict, constant reminder that adults will be watching the show with their kids and that they should be having fun with it, too.

Sure, it has restraints placed on it so that society will let kids watch it. But there's nothing else infantile about it except some song lyrics and a few of the morals.
>>
>>25802787
Don't worry, bro. I've been around since S1, and I still watch every episode the day it airs. If /mlp/ and the fandom at large are winding down a bit, it could just be that we're trimming away the fans of the fandom, the cloppers, and the bandwagon fags. We'll never have the magical feeling of "Holy shit this show is actually good how am I enjoying it this much" as when we first started watching, but I hopefully we'll whittle our way back down to the chill, awesome fanbase we had back in season one - the fanbase that really loved the show for what it was and nothing more.

Another thing could be that the fandom is getting a lot more mature and calm after all the "OMG PONIES EVERYONE" and spamming pone all over the internet in 2011.

I see the show more "Family" oriented than "Children" oriented. Something a family could watch together with out it being complete rubbish.

Good Story, Good Animation, Good Direction and not complete smut with gore and cursing every 10 seconds? Unheard of in this day and age right? Really is a blessing to see a return to shows like this, and morals in a cartoon? Really if that is a reason to call any show infantile, gawd dang is noone here older to even know what the 90's was?

The age of the sitcom was the 80's -90's and every one had some moral to it. From Doogie Howser, to Family Matters, to Home Improvement, each had a moral. And music? heh musicals aren't infantile either. Even if it just is wrapping up winter. Some songs can be cheesy but they always are fun. It is what gives the show its charm.

Heck I know adults who still watch disney films and that is chock full of morals and music.

I guess I'm more hoping that the people "in the fandom" for clopping fuck off while the cloppers who watch the show get over the taboo/fetish and go back to fapping to regular porn. Look, I get you have a positive outlook, but in all honesty, the fandom wouldn't have been realized without season 1 and 2. And there would be no way in hell that the quality of season 3 through 5 was brought in the first place, there would be absolutely no fandom, without a doubt.

In all honesty, people are just tagging along just because. The show has already lost all that it had that was worthwhile. Now the writers are and Hasbro are just trying to gain from the success of the show.

But, no one has collectively cared as much. And it shows, you can't refuse the fact that people are really quiet. Sure, the fandom has grown, but only because of a long time of fans coalescing, just like Star Wars.

So, don't say something that isn't true. If something is shit, it's shit.

Hell, just look at the comics. Thats enough proof for ya.

Amen. To be honest, if I got the chance before Twilight changed her mind, I would've killed her.

But, despite the fact that hatred and violence can be immensely useful, they must be purposeful in the long term. And the only positive result of hating her now is the short-term emotional punching bag fix to be had in doing so.

It'll take time, but I'll learn to love her. She's just like a human. When she has no grip on herself, there's no limit to how stupid one can be. Maybe I'll get to the point where I can daydream about massaging her and offering counsel on how to make friends and feel comfortable in her own skin.

I admire the passion for putting that much effort into your explanation. No sarcasm.
>>
>>25804876
To make things worse, it broke my willing suspension of disbelief when she effortlessly bested Twilight Sparkle, alicorn Princess of Friendship (aka MAGIC), in a battle of wits, strategy, and magical prowess. I can’t think of a single reason why she would be able to hold her own, let alone best, Twilight as a combatant and tactician. I guess Twilight just never put any effort into learning how to fight, and she got flustered after the repeated failures (plus the stress of seeing the results of those failures).

The sheer difference in power alone should have made it like a bull elephant fighting a wild dog in a small arena. Remember when Twilight and three other alicorns' combined power matched the power of every other pony in Equestria - including multiple magically-gifted unicorns like Starlight? Even if Celestia and Luna were responsible for 99% of that power, Twilight should still have an insurmountable power advantage over Starlight.
Furthermore, even if Twilight only had basic magical combat skills, the fact that she couldn't use her brain to strategize and outsmart Starlight while utilizing her power gap just made it that much harder to buy.
>>

Twilight possesses immensely powerful magic, yes. She can turn ponies into other creatures, she can freeze a couple dozen ponies simultaneously. But most of her magic is not directed to battle. >Stephen Hawkings wouldn't beat the average korean at Starcraft
He could beat the world champ no problem if all of his units and buildings were buffed to 100x the power of his opponent while starting with a comparatively infinite amount of resources. Twilight being as smart as she is actually does apply even in battle. Creativity, quick thinking, and an immense source of spells and power definitely come into play. Her lack of knowledge of combat could even give her and advantage because she might think of something new and unique that a conventionally-trained combatant might never consider. Keep all this in mind while considering that she also had infinite attempts of which we saw about half a dozen.
>>
>>25805237
This. I want to see a montage of the years of her training at 50x gravity in the hyperbolic time chamber with the best magic-combat instructor in the world while eating and drinking nothing but magic-steroids.
>>
>>25805237
We won't know until S6, but she most likely hit her power ceiling

>>25805255
Twilight gets nervous when fighting, which renders her intelligence useless. I bet she even gets tunnel vision too. No quick-thinking, no creativity and fancy spells, she's just careless, almost thoughtless when she fights. Everything you mentioned takes lots of training, it's far from just being a tactical genius
>>
>>25805334
>Twilight gets nervous when fighting, which renders her intelligence useless
That's just headcanon that makes more assumptions than what I've stated while also contradicting the fact that she's seen her fair share of combat and kept her cool each time. And once again, she had all the time in the world to develop strategies and contingencies. If the show or Word of God says "Yeah, Twilight just being a dumbshit that whole time" then I'll buy it. Until then, >>25805283 is a better headcanon.
>>
>>25802787
Be more subtle next time.
>>
>>25805465
The only fight that demanded her to put any thought into was the very first one against NMM, which she simply teleported towards the elements, but other than that they were all mindless fights. Changelings: just shot lasers around. Tirek: just kept hitting him head on while consumed by rage. Starlight on premiere: unexpectedly blasted on the face while charging a spell, like an amateur. Bear/bee creature: who knows, but she wasn't alone. I don't think she's had enough practice where her intelligence could be properly utilized in combat. I know it borders headcanon territory but it makes some sense
>>
>>25805650
It's still headcanon that only vaguely addresses one problem out of many for why Twilight didn't stomp her once she set her mind to it.There is some sense in it, but it would need to be stated in canon before it becomes the best answer.
