I think the finale will hold up with time. The fact that its pretty much killed off the daily "this shows going to hell, it sucks so bad" threads for over 24 hours is admirable in itself.

This probably isn't the most popular opinion. Still, I might as well be honest. Seasons 5 and 2 are flawed but amazing. Rainbow Rocks does for EQG what Friendship is Magic did for the MLP franchise, and puts on quite a show while doing it. Season 3 has a ton of mistakes, but its rare good parts are among the show's best moments. Friendship Games, while not the most logical movie in the world, handles Scilight's character well and has an ending that's pulled off well enough to place it high on the list. Seasons 1 and 4 do very little wrong, but neither one pulls out that many spectacular episodes either. EQG... well, it has one catchy song and some nice character moments. Not much else to recommend it for.
Not even season 5 could fix the feel of losing Twilight for the stupid wings.
I actually think it's the best season though that isn't saying much. The writing in this show is mediocre at best and people who say season 1 was the peak of story telling brilliance within the series are delusional.

Season 1 handled the characters more consistently than any other and presented an interesting setting, plus it had some of the show's best comedy. It just spent too much of its time retreading familiar territory with its stories.

Season 1 had the advantage of being the first season. It's way easier to be consistent with 26 episodes than it is to be over the span of 100+ episodes.
I think Faust was the right choice to spearhead FIM and I think she had a better control of the subtleties of early FIM than the current staff.
But when the current staff manages to capture Lauren's storytelling and interpersonal characterization skills, they really do it well, i.e. Amending Fences, Rarity Takes Manhattan.
Without Lauren, the show manages to be a little less juvenile, which is a bonus in the long run I think.

S5 was good and solid but I liked S4 more. Compared to S4, S5 was a bit long on cutesiness and a bit short on excitement. S5 was best at background ponies though. Introduced more better new pone than other seasons.

S5 was amazing, but I do actually have legitimate worries for S6's quality due to AKR leaving, Meghan being less involved at least and leaving at worst, and Larson maybe not in either. While the new writers mostly actually did a pretty good job (especially on continuity), I'm not sure the remaining staff will have the right general idea of how to handle the show.
Season 5 is my favorite season but the very ending of the finale triggered me because that kind of ruined the character of Starlight Glimmer and it was rushed as fuck for sake of having a toy commercial at the end...

i think season 5 has been the best; in terms of writing and animation it's been great and gorgeous respectively. they really took the art direction to the next level with the backdrops, too, and s5 had some of the most compelling and feelsiest episodes to date.
i can't wait for season 6. they get better every year.
