It is much maligned here. Terry has a pretty obvious formula that he uses in the earlier ones (haven't read much past the first two series). His setting has some interesting ideas and is comfy enough if you have time to burn on mediocrity.

...and now I remember that they started a TV series in January covering Elfstones of Shannara (arguably the best of the ones I read). Looks like it got picked up for a second season.
>>
>>8228895

The series was absolute dogshit, they aimed for the Twilight / Hunger Games audiences and went full YA teen love triangle. The only saving grace was the Allanon actor.
>>
>>8228858
Well if your blog has that many followers probably only about 100 looked at the post, so about 15 actually read it. Most people can't be bothered to click like so let's say 3 out of 6 people enjoyed your work. 50%, still better than Sanderson.

Railsea's a rare example of good YA, very Melville/Defoe/Stevenson high seas adventure. Certain of his books could be called memes (mostly Iron Council, he goes full Marx and it's embarrassing), but I appreciate the fact he mostly does standalones, that way if something doesn't work out the next book'll be completely different - it's not like committing to a big multipart saga.

Could power armour, giant mecha and dinosaurs work together in a fantasy novel?

How do you feel about animal people in your stories?

I'm writing a modern-day cold-war-gone-hot, but the commies are a union of canines, encompassing domestic dog breeds as well as wolves and foxes and etc., where the non-dogs are a tiny minority that although nominally equal are still mistrusted by the dogs. The other side are fascist cats, where the big cats (lions, tigers, etc.) are a caste of educated warrior-philosophers who are emburdened with carrying the culture of their society and for whom failure is a death sentence ruling over the domestic cats and who seek to genocide all non-cats.

Furry wank, or might be fun?

As someone who's currently writing a book, I feel like adding a sex scene, even if the characters are clearly attracted to one another, is distasteful and would turn readers off.

That sort of thing should be reserved for stuff like visual novels where porn is pretty much expected to be in every story.

>>8229637
On the other hand, I do wonder if readers think this.

>>

I didn't explain myself clear. I don't consider the description of a sex scene to be important. I do, however, think it's extremely important to know if they actually did it instead of leaving it in the air.

I do think sexual explicit content is distasteful.
But I hate when the Author tries desperately to hide when sex happened.

>She walked up naked in the morning
I'm quoting a well known fantasy author. The girl is 18 years old, this is the 1st time they slept on a tent after a 2 year relationship in sleeping in separate rooms. We have no background whatsoever on their believes or sexual driven emotions.

Start at the beginning: The Darkness that Comes Before. The Great Ordeal is effectively the sixth book in the overarching series.

I know a lot of you guys like to read standalones, and say that if the author can't say it in one book, it isn't worth hearing... but don't you think that it takez considerable skill the effectively tell a story over multiple books? You have to keep the tone, and progression relative over multiple books.

Any idiot can write 500k words of none sense, stuff it in a book, release a few farts and call it a masterpiece.

After years of wanting to be a writer I realized that I don't really like books. To be precise, I don't care about the writing style. I care about settings, plots, and characters, but not writing. To me, a book is merely a beta of a better work, like cartoon or movie. Whenever I read something, I imagine it as images and sounds as it it was a movie. Using text alone to draw things feels raw. What's more, literary techniques like similes and metaphors sicken me like otaku sicken Miyazaki.
So I want to be a storyteller, but not a writer. There is a story I want to tell, but I don't know what medium to use to tell it. Try drawing it? Not happening in forseeable future, most things I ever illustrated were geometry problems.

The fuck is wrong with you? This is the most snobbish thing I've ever read on this board.

If you don't like books you have other options, but they all require dedication and years of practice. The main advantage of writing literature is that words are a lot easier to produce than professional-looking illustrations, animations or films.

This isnt the case. The problem with series is that they very easily become long, plodding and lose their focus after starting so strongly.

If you can nail your story in three books then cool, Gene Wolfe did BOTNS in four. The idea is to not waste the readers time, or yours for that matter.

>Do you have your mother's bones?

Why are protagonists so painful to write? The entire concept of a main character feels difficult in a fantasy world, because it's usually someone either really blank or someone who is obfuscating some part of the world / story from the reader (i.e. Severian).

Am I just supposed to jump between the perspectives of a bunch of characters? Or frontload a ton of the interest into a single character?
>>
>>8234302
That was ASOIAF not PoN
>>
>>8234304
They're as painful as you want to be. Make them an actual character with a goal and you're set. The 'blank' slate technique is extremely hit or miss.

I dont see anything wrong with obfuscating some part of the world/story since its never been necessary to frontload the reader with all this world detail. Whats important first and foremost is the characters and the situation at hand. You can easily just write another story from another POV later on.
>>
>>8234288
I'm on book four right now and I can't stand it. Who in God's name writes a fantasy series and after three great books goes, "I know, lets completely ditch the main characters for the next book and follow some side characters no one gives a fuck about!". This reeks of a jew publisher who wanted GRRM to stretch and bloat the story out for as long as possible.

I think the key thing is to have them changed by the story, the most obvious pattern is the Campbellian hero journey/coming of age tale but that's probably been done to death.

I was reading about the Ballantine Adult Fantasy imprint of the 1960's/70's edited by Lin Carter. Seemed cool; various 'forgotten' and minor writers published with really nice covers, as well as themed short story anthologies.

Is there any publishing line comparable? Or are there some particularly nice anthologies published recently? I'm aware of the Masterworks line.
