Railsea's a rare example of good YA, very Melville/Defoe/Stevenson high seas adventure. Certain of his books could be called memes (mostly Iron Council, he goes full Marx and it's embarrassing), but I appreciate the fact he mostly does standalones, that way if something doesn't work out the next book'll be completely different - it's not like committing to a big multipart saga.

I'm writing a modern-day cold-war-gone-hot, but the commies are a union of canines, encompassing domestic dog breeds as well as wolves and foxes and etc., where the non-dogs are a tiny minority that although nominally equal are still mistrusted by the dogs. The other side are fascist cats, where the big cats (lions, tigers, etc.) are a caste of educated warrior-philosophers who are emburdened with carrying the culture of their society and for whom failure is a death sentence ruling over the domestic cats and who seek to genocide all non-cats.

After years of wanting to be a writer I realized that I don't really like books. To be precise, I don't care about the writing style. I care about settings, plots, and characters, but not writing. To me, a book is merely a beta of a better work, like cartoon or movie. Whenever I read something, I imagine it as images and sounds as it it was a movie. Using text alone to draw things feels raw. What's more, literary techniques like similes and metaphors sicken me like otaku sicken Miyazaki.
So I want to be a storyteller, but not a writer. There is a story I want to tell, but I don't know what medium to use to tell it. Try drawing it? Not happening in forseeable future, most things I ever illustrated were geometry problems.

This isnt the case. The problem with series is that they very easily become long, plodding and lose their focus after starting so strongly.
If you can nail your story in three books then cool, Gene Wolfe did BOTNS in four. The idea is to not waste the readers time, or yours for that matter.

Why are protagonists so painful to write? The entire concept of a main character feels difficult in a fantasy world, because it's usually someone either really blank or someone who is obfuscating some part of the world / story from the reader (i.e. Severian).
Am I just supposed to jump between the perspectives of a bunch of characters? Or frontload a ton of the interest into a single character?

They're as painful as you want to be. Make them an actual character with a goal and you're set. The 'blank' slate technique is extremely hit or miss.
I dont see anything wrong with obfuscating some part of the world/story since its never been necessary to frontload the reader with all this world detail. Whats important first and foremost is the characters and the situation at hand. You can easily just write another story from another POV later on.

I'm on book four right now and I can't stand it. Who in God's name writes a fantasy series and after three great books goes, "I know, lets completely ditch the main characters for the next book and follow some side characters no one gives a fuck about!". I think the key thing is to have them changed by the story, the most obvious pattern is the Campbellian hero journey/coming of age tale but that's probably been done to death.

I was reading about the Ballantine Adult Fantasy imprint of the 1960's/70's edited by Lin Carter. Seemed cool; various 'forgotten' and minor writers published with really nice covers, as well as themed short story anthologies.
Is there any publishing line comparable? Or are there some particularly nice anthologies published recently? I'm aware of the Masterworks line.
