So, here's the long short of it; DSA has the FAL market cornered right now because they are the only people still producing FALs for the civilian market.
What this means is that they essentially get to set their prices to whatever the hell they want, so long as people are willing to buy their guns. The problem here is that almost nobody buys an FAL for the purposes of practicality, they buy an FAL because they want an FAL, which creates a fairly inelastic demand curve for the FAL market.
So, this results in DSA charging between $1.5K and $2K for all of their good shit, because they know that as long as it isn't SCAR-tier expensive, people will still be very willing to shell out their hard earned dosh for a cold war relic just for the sheer novelty and history of it.
And because DSA charges fuckall prices, everyone else out there doing garage builds charges fuckall prices too, because they're just following the market leader.
It's capitalism, and it kind of sucks for the consumer, but hey. It's the right arm of the free world, not the right arm of the welfare recipient.
When it comes down to it, you might as well just build an FAL if you have a decently equipped workshop and money is an issue. You can buy all the FAL-specific tools, as well as the receiver and parts kit, for just under one grand.

My FAL kit arrived yesterday, the barrel looks like all of the finish as been stripped off of it, is this normal? If not how do I fix it? How hard is it to remove the leftover chunk of reciever?

The issue I have with my DSA mags (only have two, and I bought them at a gun show, so their quality is likely not indicative of DSA's current standards) is that the feed lips are slightly too large, so when the bolt slams forward it tries to pick up the next round but instead of sliding forward with the bolt the round just gets caught up on the bigass feed lips and causes a jam.

Now, that wrench and the headspace dealio are the only tools you'll need that are unique to the FAL building process.
However, the way you put it in your post makes me feel like you have no tools at all. This means you will need a set of brass punches, a brass hammer, a regular claw hammer, a barrel wrench of some variety, a nice vise, a screwdriver with a comprehensive set of bits, and a bunch of other miscellaneous tools, all of which will put you back by at least $600, probably more.
That is, of course, assuming that you are starting from absolute scratch without a single tool in your house.

It's just the lightning cuts, mang. The Type I and II both have lightning cuts, but the style differs slightly. The Type III, on the other hand, hath no lightning cuts whatsoever. Type IIIs are arguably the least aesthetic, and they're also the heaviest as a general rule, but they're also pretty damn strong, and those slick slab sides grow on you after a while.

Strip finish with acid bath. (Vinegar or phosphoric) rinse with water and baking soda the nanosecond the finish is gone. You can use 00 or 000 steel wool to help scrub the steel. After the finish is completely off, and the acid neutralized with baking soda water, you can either blue it or take it to a gunsmith for parkerizing.

Fal files search user ratas calientes he makes and sells the tools. I did the math and it was more economic for me to send it to a builder and have him build it than buy the tools build it struggle likely fuck something up and then later refinish it. I think by like $150 to $170

Long answer: maybe. General internet wisdom is that the slim guards don't fit on the bull barrels, but I've seen lots of 91F heavy barrel rifles with surplus slim guards on them so I think it depends on who made the guard as to whether or not it will fit on. It'll be a tight fit, regardless.
