I'm fond of the CZ and its derivatives, but GLOCK, the S&W M&P series, the Springfield XD series, the Beretta 92, and pretty much any pistol in the list in the sticky are all decent choices for a first handgun. Avoid Caracal though, IIRC literally every single one was recalled.

Used Remington 870 Express or Mossberg 500, maybe a Maverick 88 for your shotgun should come in at $350 or below.
Police surplus Glock 19/17 or S&W M&P 9, perhaps a New Canik TP9, all should come in at $350 or below
That leaves you with $300 to spare which will buy a Streamlight TLR-1, a box of #4 buckshot, a box of Gold Dots, and a few boxes of blazer brass and birdshot for practice.
