Eyyyy, newfag to the world of firearms here. What would /k/ recommend as a nice first handgun?
-$500 or less (but preferably not hi-shits)
-Chambered in .45 ACP or lower
-not an m67 hand grenade

RIA has affordable 1911s. Glock has some .45 pistols. Those are the common ones I can think of.

I wanna fuck that pumpkin.

Is there a reason you want .45acp? Your selection goes down quite a bit with that ammo. Either way get a Glock trade in or RIA 1911.
>>
>>30485051
Want .45 or lower just cuz I wanna start small-ish with felt recoil n shit.
>>
>>30485106
Well if you want to go with 9mm the market really opens up. .45's are a little bit trickier. Most of the modern guns you'll find in both variants, but in general 9mm has far more on the cheaper end. If you go 9mm there are quite a bit to choose from, but I would suggest a Canik TP9. Comes with a nice bundle of simple extras and is sub $400 which should leave you enough cash fro at least 500 rds to shoot.

Alright, awesome, thank ye

relatively cheap ammo, cheap parts, cheap furniture, cheap overall price, and it was made for semi-literate conscripts to take out into a muddy field and beat like a red-headed step child.

You can get some glock/sig police trade-ins for that price. Or a Beretta 92. Do you want a fullsize or compact? Carry or range toy?

You really don't narrow much down. Makarovs are cheap and nice guns, but if you want to start small with felt recoil you prolly don't want something too small. Go to a range that does rentals and try stuff out man. How it feels is most important.

Makarovs are not really great guns for beginners. They are not as cheap as modern wonder 9's. The ammo is not >>30485146
guaranteed to be in stock in every ammo store. Neat guns and certainly a great suggestion if they were $200 to $250, but these days for $350 you can get a new plastic fantastic.

For your first gun, you should get a .22LR. The Ruger Standard Mk 3 is a good, solid choice.

It's cheap to feed, fun to shoot, and will serve you well. Nobody has ever regretted owning a .22, and you can get one off Gunbroker for under 400 if you shop for a while.

If you want to jump straight in, a nice small .357 revolver is hard to beat, just load it with .38 special until you want to turn it up to 11. Again, you can find one on Gunbroker for 3-400 if you shop for a bit.

9mm is cheap and fun, but there's so many crap 9mm's you should be careful. A Glock 19 can be found on Gunbroker for under 500, but it might take a while.

Have fun, treat it as a serious tool, and make sure you practice for proficiency.

If you can find one for a good price the Ruger American is a great little 9mm

Pretty much any full-size 9mm handgun.

They're all accurate and reliable, so it's really just a matter of what's comfortable to you.

RIA 1911s are golden in my book. 45 is a round that shouldve died years ago IMO but if you want it go for it. 10mm is the only other real option for a 1911.

they actually fit TOO tight and need a good 500-600rds to wear them down a little. there are several ~$5-15 parts on them that are cheap garbage and may severaly impede function ikf not fully worn in via that value of the pistol in ammo fired (slide stop, grip screws, leaf spring all gave me serious issues or immediately broke on mine, didnt want to sent it in for warranty so i replaced them with better parts and never had issues since)

Glock

G19 since you're most likely a limp wrist.

Anyone else, I'd recommend a G21.

.45ACP works, and though the way if recoils is different (which is why a lot of people like it), it doesn't offer you a measureable difference in terminal performance with modern defensive ammo, compared to 9mm Luger
I'll rattle off a few good 9s

Used Beretta 92FS if you don't have baby hands. Get MecGar 17rd mags and you're good.

Glock 17

FNX 9

Smith & Wesson M&P 9
Smith & Wesson 5906 if you like DA/SA and an all steel build (standard mags only hold 14rds though)

CZ-75

Check out some gunstores near you. Get whatever's the most comfortable to hold. Don't discount used guns, they're great value.

9mm:

DA/SA
- SIG SP2022
- CZ P07 or P09
- Beretta 92FS (about $50-75 outside your budget)

SFA
- Glock 17 or 19 Gen 3 (add $30-50 for Gen 4)
- S&W M&P9
- Walther PPQ
- H&K VP9 (about $50 outside your budget)
---
.40S&W (don't bother):

DA/SA
- CZ P07 or P09
- Police trade in SIG P229, P239, P226

SFA
- S&W M&P40
- H&K VP40 (about $50 outside your budget)
- Glock 35 Gen 4 police trade in (look for a KY State Police gun -- a bunch of basically NIB G35s floating around right now with night sights for about $500). Glock .40s tend to be less reliable than the others. Do not go smaller than a Glock 22 in this caliber
---
.45ACP

SFA
- S&W M&P45 or 45C
- Glock 21SF or 30SF or 30S (or Gen 4 models, but add $50-75)
