Knife general #9. Trips decides the next knife I use for OP image, Google is running out of decent Finn Wolf pics
Previous thread: >>30173090

As mentioned before these threads need not be knives only. Other bladed weapons welcome, especially swords.

Looks to me like a scandi grind but I could be wrong. Anyone got that infographic with knife blade grinds? On mobile atm. Also would like to have the one with sword cross-sections
>>
>>30235739
It's a scandi style grind allright, I just wasn't sure if it was zero ground or beveled, the picture there makes it seem there's a bevel on the edge.
>>
>>30235666
thanks buddy.

Nice. I have to agree the name printed on the blade looks a little silly

here's my ashville 1way auto. lighter is for scale. absolutely no complaints.

s30v steel blade. tightly manufactured aluminum body, so there's no blade wobble. love this blade.
>>
>>30235939
I don't like OTF's. Why have one when you could just have a spring folder or a balisong?
Anyway not here to fight over knife tupes, but that is a good looking knife I have to admit. Is s30v the same or similar to s35vn? What are good blade steels in knives?
I always see people posting different blade steels but I don't really know the difference. All I know is 440c is like the chinkshit tier stuff and most everything else is good to decent. S35vn, vg-10, 154cm, etc etc. Really what's the difference, hardness level and edge retention mainly? And what steel is best for what occassions?
>>
>>30235985
Actual 440c is excellent, problem is it was one of the most mis-advertised steels in history, like people writing surgical steel on things when it's not even an actual steel rating. S35vn was a development of S30v, slight edge retention loss for an improvement in toughness/machinability.

The difference in most of the supersteels you listed is minimal, all of them hold an edge a long time and don't take abuse well but used to purpose they're super low maintenance steels.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me.

I've been the OP of most of these knife threads. I'm just trying to learn what I can of knives or just blades in general. Everyone seems to mention specifications like blade steels but nobody ever actually talks about them specifically, so I felt kinda out of the loop at least in that department.

sorry for the wait time. i botched a few ms paint trials. s30v is one of the more well balanced steels you can find it has better edge-holding properties than the majority of cost effective blades.

>>
>>30236021
I've only ever handled one. Since they're illegal in most states I kinda figured balisongs or regular spring folders would either be cheaper or easier to acquire or use. Hell even assisted opening maybe. The lockup on those types of knives seems to be more compact and reliable, and probably take less maintenance for more use. I could be wrong though. Just going off the idea that the more parts to a machine the easier it is to break or fail. With a balisong it's literally 1-2 flips to open or a folder with spring assist or even just a good thumbstud/flipper could open just as fast but still have a better blade. Guess that all depends on the specific knife though. OTFs prolly have their own versions of cheap knock-offs and holy grails just like all other knives
>>
>>30236030
http://www.midwayusa.com/content/HowToGuides/knife_steel_and_handle_material_chart.htm

https://www.boker.de/us/blade-steel.html
>>
>>30236049

It's mostly novelty above all else. It will have a varying amount of parts and the lockups of almost all OTF autos is not perfect, but that doesn't matter for most of the tasks you'd be using the knife for.

Balisongs are a great way to cut yourself.

Assisted opening folders are by far the most common and economical.

For delicate (skinning/game prep) or hard use tasks (batoning, wood prep, stabby stab) you're pretty much using a fixed blade.
>>
>>30236051
Thanks anon that midway one helped a ton.
>>30236077
>balisongs are a good way to cut yourself
No shit. As a flipper I would have to agree. But there are some really good balis that can not only flip great but hold up to other folders in terms of actual knife use. The BM51 is supposedly the ultimate EDC balisong with the G10 handle scales, titanium liners, ss spacers and the spring loaded latch. And the Hom Specter/Specter EVO is supposed to have a great blade.

I can see where you're coming from on novelty. That's kinda why I like balisongs, really. Also I kek'd at the stabby stab

Yeah at the end of the day, buy whatever makes you happy; as long as you can afford it. What knives people carry is a cool reflection of their personality/values. Variety is nice.

Unless you buy a sebenza— then you've given up on life and should just kill yourself.
>>
>>30235649
No bevel I can feel on mine. Measures out to be a 40 degree angle.
>>
>>30236137
That gif made me chuckle. The biggest one has fucking recoil

But yeah I'd have to agree on the Sebenza's. $200+ for a utility folder when you could have a Cold Steel, Mora, Spyderco, even Benchmade for similar or lower price but similar or better quality.
>>
Would it be a faux pas to ask about the practicality and function of CS:GO knives here? I'm thinking of buying one for my friend, and he's a stickler for knives
>>
>>30236274
If you're buying a novelty item, do it for the novelty. None of them are particularly practical.
>>
>>30236274
Basically what >>30236283 said.
The only ones I could see being partially practical are the Flip Knife, Falchion or the Gut Knife, but most of them are as expensive and hard to find IRL as in game.
I can name off a few of them.
>Flip Knife: Benchmade Bedlam
>Gut Knife: Buck Alpha Hunter 193. Now discontinued but you can find a new version called the Alpha Skinner
>Huntsman Knife: Mtech Xtreme MX-8054
>Falchion Knife: Cold Steel Espada (Large, not regular or XL)
>Butterfly Knife: Terry Guinn Gargoyle (extremely rare and expensive)
>Shadow Daggers: Gerber Uppercut Push Daggers
>Karambit: Cold Steel Honshu Karambit
I can't really find a brand name for the Bowie Knife, but here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002MPRT6Y?pc_redir=T1&qid=1455908686&s=sports-and-fitness&sr=1-4
Can't really get too specific with the M9 and normal Bayonets because there are a lot of those, you'll have to look around for the best ones.
>>

>>30236470
I was thinking of getting it from elemental knives
https://elementalknives.com
By the by, is 420 steel good for knives? I'm a fa/tg/uy so this is out of my range of expertise
>>
>>30236476
It's pretty basic, decent corrosion resistance but soft compared to most used these days.
>>
>>30236476
Well I guess if you wanted cheap, pre-painted ones then elemental isn't bad, but I think the paintjobs from TacticoolKnives is closer to the in-game ones.
420 is basic, look at the chart in the first link from >>30236051, you'll see it's alright but there are better options these days
>>

Fuck it, here we go. So this kind of knife is described as having a "tanto point." Is this just referring to how the point of the blade is offset along with the diagonal cut? Also, what is the purpose of the recessed lower blade?
>>
>>30236582
Is that recurve or just an optical illusion
>>

TT650 (20).jpg
346 KB, 740x440
>>30236588
Tanto point comes from having a point similar to an actual Tanto.

In some knives it's an area where you have a different grind pattern, generally suited more to whittling and the like, in others it's useful for doing work like a drawknife, in that knife, not really sure.
>>
>>30236606
Forgot to mention, second part relates to the recessed question.
>>
File: image.jpg (48 KB, 480x480) Image search: [Google]
image.jpg
48 KB, 480x480
Okay my main concern is the hook. It's called a gut knife; is that only because of the hook on the end? Why is there a little edge at the back of the hook pocket? If you're pulling something out with the hook, wouldn't having an edge make it useless? And how would I cut with that small edge, just jimmy the knife up and down until it works its way through? Lastly, the handle: is that type of construction comfortable? It seems to me like the protruding metal would bother the hands.
>>
>>30236030
I know that feeling. I normally go to blade forums to read up on steels then I come here for a second opinion. They break it down to the material composition of the steels to get a rough idea of performance then actually test it.
>>
>>30236667
Gut hook is actually for cleaning an animal without puncturing the intestines. It works like a zipper. If you're experienced with cleaning an animal then it's really unneeded. Got my grandpa in law one by Gerber since he likes the gut hooks.
>>
>>30236667
Well you wouldn't want to do lots of hard cutting tasks with one I don't think but dressing a carcass involves a lot of different cutting tasks and some prying around joints so you're not often holding the knife the same way for extended periods. The hook makes it a "gut knife" but the blade shape and length, ie: short a wide with a decent belly makes it suitable for dressing game, To be honest though I think those handles buck/buck style knives use are mainly a cheap to make easy to clean option rather than ideal.

Sweet dubs.

Anyways yeah I'd have to agree with second anon, I don't think there are any Swiss Army Knives with a saw or pliers that can fit in normal pockets. You can hardly fit anything in jean pockets really. And I doubt any of the SAK's are UK legal
>>
>>30237122

That "lower blade" is often referred to as a "nightmare grind," named by Mick Strider who points out that it is literally a nightmare to grind. I don't think he had any real practical purpose in mind, sometimes he just likes to do stuff that looks cool.

Japanese style wraps only look good on Japanese style swords or knives. Those blades do not match the handles at all, and what's the point in havig a fixed with a handle that big and a blade that small? Dispoportionate knives kinda drive me crazy, unless it's a folder and the difference is only slight. When the handle is 2x longer than the blade it gets ridiculous

just cleaned it from when it was last used to turn meat at a BBQ (students are too disorganised to bring tongs to a BBQ)
And I just put on this state of the art rubber band handle till I get hold of some new para cord, because I'm actually using the para cord it came with (didn't think I'd ever do that)

It's supposed to mimic the infamous tom brown tracker (of the hunted fame). Technically, the recessed secondary edge is supposed to protect the edge when cutting/chopping with the primary. In practice, it's completely redundant.

>>30246381
Balisongs can be flipped which is a hobby itself, and most high quality balis have good enough blades to be used for actual knife work like a regular folder, just with 2 handles instead of 1
>>
>>30248379
That in no way changes their meme tier, it's like saying throwing knives or shurikens aren't a meme because you can practice throwing them.
>>
>>30248399
Most of them are still practical for knife use, but with the bonus of being able to be flipped. Throwing knives/shurikens can't usually do much other than stabbing, throwing, or sometimes opening mail. Balisongs can do a lot more than that.
Throwing knives and shurikens are down there with Karambits. Balisongs are still able to hold up as a knife unlike the other meme tier shit

I carried a butterfly in high school, some cheap stainless steel one. Twenty bucks from budk and used it hard in scouts for everything from rope cutting to food prep. It's just another knife, with the benefit of being fun to play with. As long as you can sharpen well it doesn't matter so much what you carry for a beater.

We weren't supposed to be carrying large fixed blades or lock backs (regional restriction in scouting) and none of our leaders knew anything about knife laws so I just carried a butterfly because it was way safer for hard use than the approved slip joints.
