Is it because it's so high up? I'm drawn to the Obzor because of its apparent longevity and simplicity, and the fact that I wouldn't have to purchase a rail separately if I got one.
I'm just concerned whether this thing functions properly indoors, and whether the Russian theory of "having your face high up to improve your field of view while shooting" is better than a good cheekweld.
My intent is to use this thing as a hardy, long term SHTF sight.

Unless you have a helmet on that makes it impossible to get a good cheek weld, stick with something that is as close to the irons as possible, or get yourself a cheek riser (band-aid).
But my thought is when you train with your rifle you want to keep things consistent. You should always be familiar with using your irons, so why re train your brain to hold your head up much higher when using a dot?
For longevity and durability, an Aimpoint is much more reliable than any comblock optic ever will be. Paired with an RS regulate mount, it will give you the lowest possible mount on an AK, which is lower 1/3rd co-witness.

I've got a second Obzor coming in Monday, and the hunt for a Soviet faceted 74 brake is on.
I'm was genuinely considering selling all of my non-plum mags (about a dozen Bulgarian sanitized black painted Russian plums and about another dozen black (10) mags) and only buying plums, but that would be too much effort for something that really only concerns looks and not function as (10)s are perfect and the sanitized mags are great as well. No, no you do not. That's a horrible way of thinking and you're going to end up with a shitty AK with shitty accessories unless you've got some coin to drop. Buy it and build it up like people do with ARs, or make sure that you've got all the money for all the best shit.
It seems to me the best bang for your buck in this day and age would be a DDI AK, unless you want to spend the extra money and get an Arsenal or spend less and get a What A Shitty Rifle.

It's a novelty. You've got no purpose for one and affixing it will do nothing but put weight on the front of your rifle. If you want one to just sit there so you can occasionally admire the rifle with it on, then go for it, but otherwise it's useless.

IO Incs are fucking time bombs. Don't even bother. The closest thing to a Rock Island 1911 would be a WASR. The IO Inc guns are dangerous, anything MADE by century (not imported but MADE) like the RAS-47 or C39V2 are almost as bad and should be avoided. Just get a WASR.

A few batches of SLR-104FRs and SLR-107FRs had finish issues where the finish on the barrel would bubble a bit if you mag dumped 3 full mags one after another.

Arsenal triggers are a fake 2-stage. Essentially there is a small ledge that the trigger has to overcome on the hammer and it can cause issues.

The front sight blocks, gas blocks, and rear sight blocks on all AK's are pressed and pinned on. Sometimes they're not put on straight and thus have some cant to them. When buying an AK you want to check for cant.

I've got an akm247t. 2000+ rounds without many issues. One rivet came loose about a week ago and it was a 10 min fix.
IO is trash, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Inspect every gun before you buy.

WASR. Always start with a WASR. Preferably a newer GP WASR-10.
They're cheap(er) than the more expensive Arsenals, Veprs, or boutique AKs, yet will still truck along and do their job. They are very hardy and reliable. They used to go for under 500, but a combination of it being an election year and the quality control on them being bumped up has forced the price a little higher. Try to get one for under 700, or you'll be overpaying.
Do NOT get an RAS-47 or I.O. You are literally asking for your face to get blown off.
Learn to check for front sight canting, general fit and finish, and make SURE that the gun is properly headspaced before you buy it.
Learn your gun, get lots of mags, and even more ammo.

At 9.8k on mine. Mix of both premium brass and loltula. Biggest issue I've had is the factory trigger spring wearing out. Ones made after 2014 or so seem to be on par with nice WASRs.
I.O. could have been good, but they had to crash their reputation with no survivors. Now all they get is gamblers and people wanting project rifles.
