I'm starting to build an AR, getting the lower in Monday and am starting to pick parts. I know things like the buffer tube and such aren't so important on the "This brand is shit/This brand the greatest" scale as long as it's to the spec.

When it comes to barrels, bolts/bolt carriers, and uppers though, how do you tell what's good and what's cut rate? Is it purely just a matter of money being thrown at it? Or is just about anything going to be good enough and you're paying for the name?

I painted one of my unfished 80%'s, it was a terrible idea.
Bead plastic it before you try coating it with cheap spray paint, duracoat might be fine.

>>29623996
BCG's are mostly all fine. Aim to spend at least $90-100 and there's a good chance it'll be just fine for all your needs.

Barrels can be a little trickier, it really depends on what you want. PSA uses FN barrels iirc, and those are good for general use. If you want a precision barrel, you might want to look at Noveske or other such brands.
Chrome lined = greater barrel life
Unlined = slightly shorter life, but higher precision potential

In general.

Besides the obvious (getting a rail), what else should I do with it?

The milspec trigger is fine enough, but after shooting match rimfire rifles and ISPC SAO Tanfoglio handguns I've been spoiled by their triggers. I don't think I want an optic, every red dot I've used has had awful starbursting due to my shitty eyes. I might replace the grip with a MOE or BCM one.

I was happy to buy a Geissele DMR trigger, MK8, and a Noveske Intermediate-gas barrel.

A $250+ bcg is a bit silly in my mind, it took me only a bit to polish my shitty bcg. I have better things to spend a quarter-grand on.

>>29624104
That's a good question, I'm not sure.
I'm not familiar with how durable a hydrodip is in the first place, but IMO if you want a lower to have any finish worth keeping it wouldn't hurt to anodize it.
Personally I likely won't anodize any of my raw lowers, other than one in vintage Colt grey.

>>29624105
Barrel length is less a factor in accuracy than you might think. A 20" will give you a flatter trajectory for sure though.
Chrome isn't really a detriment at all unless you want to be shooting consistent sub-moa groupings at distance, but some people here shoot damn well even with a chrome barrel.
Your mileage may vary.

SW FL. It's really just the fact that they didn't expect me to actually try and remove the muzzle brake I assume because their unpinning job was sloppy and they 1. didn't bother removing the brake for me (something I found odd but didn't bother to question) and 2. they tried to cover up by saying that they mended over the hole with what looked like some poor application of extremely hot metal with a shit finish.

Either way, Their poor job caused my threads to get fucked when i tried to unscrew the muzzle device and they recognize that so they're paying for it. They're trying their best to salvage it, god bless 'em, but they're not going to be able to do it I don't believe.

I'm doing one of those right now actually.

The full parts kits are all sold out from what I've seen, but gunbroker and eBay have a surprising amount of vietnam-era furniture.
Look for "sp1", "xm16e1", and "m16a1" in your searches.
Numrich has a lot of smaller parts in stock too.

You'll have the most trouble with the lower, but Nodak Spud still has some in stock I think.

I have a confession to make.

When I got my first AR it had a milspec trigger that was fucking godlike, I just assumed all AR triggers are fucking amazing.

Then I bought a CMMG LPK a while back, 300 or so rounds later, the trigger still sucks.

Decided to swap back to the old FCG tonight, and I noticed a shiny spot where the goober who sold me the rifle in a walmart parking lot had modified the trigger.

He did a very good job!

ALGs are good from what I've seen, but I don't think they have QD points on them, and the top rail is lacking on some models in my opinion. MI's are my go-to, lots of QD points and enough rail even on the light weight models to get it done. The timing of the barrel nut is a bit annoying but whatever.

Does Geissele even have a sub-$200 rail? It seems like that brand only has gucci stuff.

What? There's nothing illegal about building an AR in Colorado. The only thing explicitly illegal is selling magazines over the limit. That is of course if you are in an area that actually gives a fuck. Plenty of them don't, there's a lot of based people here, including LEOs.

5.56, there is no best manufacturer because they've all got their individual quirks. Best barrels would Daniel Defense in my opinion, and best triggers would be Geissle, but everything else is personal preference.

Dumb question but I never used a ar15. I know the parts are different between them and an m16 but but does it feel noticeably different? Or are they pretty much identical? Also, what is a good price for one?
>>
Which is the preferred twist rate, 1:7 or 1:9, and why?
>>
>>29625563
M16 has full auto or burst, AR15s are semi auto only. Different fire control group and receiver to accommodate it, the possession of which without proper paperwork is a free 10 year stay in a concrete cube and your dogs getting shot. They "feel" about the same I guess? Recoil is the same, just semi auto vs full auto, they handle about the same, parts compatibility is greater than 90%. Price wise: 400 for a piece of junk that is unpleasant to use, 6-800 for a "normal" AR, 1000-3000 for a gucci tricked out. The upper limit is your wallet, not the market.
>>29625576
1:7 can shoot everything from 50 gr rounds to 77+ gr rounds
1:9 won't stabalize 70+ gr projectiles well, but is the nice median for shooting light varmit rounds (40gr) to normal loads (55gr and 62 gr) while allowing some higher ones like 69gr.

Basically pick the 1:7 if you ever want to use heavier defensive loads, pick the 1:9 if you might want to hunt varmit, but not defensive loads. Either will stabilize the most common projectiles (55gr and 62gr)
>>
>>29625485
Okay. My only concerns with the Smith are the lower build quality and the 1:9 twist rate. You're right, though, It shouldn't be too long until I build one exactly to my liking.
>>
>>29625563
>>29625697
Adding on to that, as a civilian and m16 will cost 20k+ dollars and a paperwork processing time measured in years.

First and foremost: Milspec everything. That part isn't even difficult, though some things list milspec compliance codes (eg '11595e spec barrel') instead of just saying 'milspec'. With uppers, it's either milspec or it's not and it should say

For barrels, you're going to want something with the 4150CMV range, preferably lined.

For BCG's, you'll want what they call an M16/full-auto profile carrier. Has a bit more mass which benefits durability and cycling.

For barrels, BCGs, and anything else possible you want it to be High Pressure Tested (HPT) and Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI). IMO MPI is more important as it can detect flaws in the metal/machining that HPT might not

>>29623872

Don't let his autism get to you.

Rubberized grips are awesome if that's what you like. Never ever base your purchases on the opinions of losers on the internet friendo.

Honestly they're uncomfortable in the hand and a bad idea for anything other than light range use. They're overly sticky which can be a problem when it rubs against clothing, foliage, or anything else you might run into whenever you're hunting or pretend operating or whatever else you do. I've also noticed that every rubberized gun part I've ever owned gets damaged a whole lot quicker than polymer simply because it's softer and weaker.

In the end, take DR8C0's advice and forget what losers like him say.

We both sent ours off on the same day. I'm curious as to who will be processed first.

Either way, we have a lot more waiting to do.

He pretty much shits on women and black people for fun but in a comedic enough way that he's actually hit it pretty big.

"first off I'm a dude, so, there was a one in two chance of that sucking."

It's on my 9mm SBR currently.

Someday it'll probably migrate to my main rifle, but I'm having fun with it where it is now.

My man. I did the same thing. First thing I remember was seeing his rap version of the Lion King when he started putting on youtube a few years ago. I actually got to go to one of his concerts down in Atlanta. It was amazing.

I saw him in Houston and am going to see him again in Austin.

He's come a long way, he's actually a great producer and writer and can do stuff besides comedy.

I've been thinking about building a side charging ar pistol in .300blk am I wrong for this? Also what's the legality on this Shockwave blade everybody seems to have?
>>
>>29629559
yes you are wrong. they are legal, thats why you see them
>>
>>29629566
I think it's just because I want something new and ARs are fun to build. I was speaking more to shouldering it
>>
>>29629557
Definitely. He's really talented. That song really is one of the ones that stands out on Professional Rapper.
>>
>>29629587
You can shoulder it all you want.
It's not the intended use that's the point.
>>
>>29629587
imo they are retarded but you do you. shouldering it creates a sbr so dont do that or dont get caught
>>
>>29629615
Fugg, I just don't think I should build another 556 AR. Mine does everything I want it to do.

Well I have my built AR (pic related) and it's fine. This would be my "trunk gun" but not shouldering the blade would be too hard so I probably won't end up building one. Maybe I could get my rocks off building a new upper in .300blk
