Two years out of college next month and I've been working as a security guard. I originally planned on trying to get a PhD, I had trouble finding a professor that was open to more students and was doing research in a field I was interested in. The longer I go, the more I think that it was just because I was expected to go into academia and that I can't find an interesting professor because I simply am not as interested in science as I thought I was, while in the same period of time, quite a few different personal motivations pushed me towards police, but that's incredibly difficult because of the list above. And then at this point, even if I DO get my PhD, I won't even be entering the job market until my mid thirties, and that's assuming I can even find a job in the field. So right now I have a BS in biology, which, while ostensibly a STEM degree, has little practical application without another degree on top of it.
Arachnology was the only thing I was really interested in my last year at college, but the only things there are professor or working with the state government. I got lucky and did an internship with my town's conservation commission, but I quickly learned that wasn't the kind of job I was interested in. Like imagine studying to be an architect and loving the theory, but finding out that while you like designing buildings, you fucking hate actually building things.
I feel like I'm just treading water and I'm far too young to be satisfied with just surviving. And sorry for the long text, but I don't get to talk about this too much.

Slightly simillar situation myself actually, did Electrical Engineering but i really don't feel like working with that anymore so i want to be a cop instead. And just for the record, this is how color blind I am. I know it's a category A disqualifier (the bad one) for Boston (and therefore most of MA) and NY, but I haven't checked everywhere. If you are a junior officer in a special operations billet or infantry billet, you'll generally be where your platoon/company is. Regardless, the higher in the chain of command, the more admin stuff you do.

I'm enlisted navy, so I can't speak for sure on that, but any training you get is going to be needs of the service. If you are filling a billet for PJs or something, youll do some cool training. If you are doing pog stuff, you probably wont do cool training unless you put a package in for a high speed billet

AF has CROs, which are the officer version of PJ/CCTs, but it's just about the toughest position to get into in the whole armed forces. Seal and SF officers are probably the only more selective positions. As a CRO you would be expected to be in basically olympian tier condition as well as having to pass PJ indoc.

In my experience nobody cares what anyone else smells like in the field when it comes to body odor. Just swab your areas and throw your pack on.
What you have to worry about is being the stinky guy in garrison. Wash your fucking uniforms weekly, including your cover. If you're stationed someone humid then you may have to swap out one mid-week. And for fucks sake, wash your bed sheets - that is how people get sick... that and not bathing before going to sleep.
It may be common knowledge to some people but you'd be surprised when it comes to coddled kids. They are away from home for the first time in their lives and have no idea how to take care of themselves.

Leaning against Marines since if you're not into their culture, there's no real reason for that branch, and leaning against Air Force since if you don't like planes or computers, there's not much appeal there, either. I think between Army and Navy, it's just going to be which recruiter I can actually get to return my calls. I don't give a fuck if you're good at PT or at hands-on military work, that isn't your job or your lane. You get extra pay and extra power because you have extra responsibility, so take that shit seriously.
If I'm giving you good work as an NCO, your job isn't to micromanage me in order to justify your existence. Your job is to keep shit off my back and let me do my job. That means being proactive, not reactive. If I'm having to deal with a bunch of bureaucratic bullshit, you failed me. My job is never going to be easy, but if your plans aren't terrible and you're good at disseminating them down, my job is at least simple. I show up, I do what I'm good at, we both look good.
My only other pet peeve is being lectured to by officers who think that going to college is what makes them fit to be officers. Officers are in charge because that is their primary responsibility. I am trained in my job-specific skillset and you are trained in how to manage and organize service members, programs, and equipment. You're a specialist in leadership, or should be by the time you have a few years in. Besides, I've got a fucking graduate degree.

Because you should, a lot of seemingly minor shit could disqualify you. I know a guy who admitted to getting frostbite when he played hockey as a teen and that disqualified him from becoming a ranger and other more intense services. So don't mention your broken bones on the off chance that they might decide it could be a problem.
It's an "anything you say can be used against you" situation really, there's absolutely nothing good that could come from you telling them anything unless you have to. You're not going to be rewarded for being honest.
Basically it's a question of what will show up on your medical records. So if you have a diagnosis with ADHD and it's something that would show up in your records when they check they would get mad because a history of ADHD is something that would disqualify you from some services.

Something I started doing on deployment on a shitty ass OP, which came in handy for extended FTXs was to carry my clothes seperated in various stuff stacks (I used sea-to-summit brand).
It is possible to effectively wash your dirty clothes by heating up some water (using an MRE heater, fire, or camp stove) and dump it into the stuff sack. Use whatever soap you have, if possible. Shake up it realy well. Then rinse the soap by dumping out the water and refilling the stuff sack with cold water.
Remove clothes, squeeze them out as best as possible and then air dry them.
Your clothes won't be fresh and clean, but they won't be completely gross. You can at least rewear these washed clothes if you are innawoods so long that you cycle through all your clothes.
Also a ladies bikini razor with an extra long guard makes a good choice for shaving your pits & junk when you have limited water. You can shave to decent effect without fear of razor bumps.

But in another sense, no. Physical jobs in the military are tough. Sometimes you do everything right and you just get unlucky in an instant and fuck your back up for life. Assuming no special pays, you're looking at 52K - 76K starting, with a significant portion of that being untaxed. So there's a solid chance that he gets a raw pay raise, and an almost guaranteed chance that he gets a net pay raise after taxes.
Odds are that anon is not getting that 62K currently in middle-of-nowhere South Carolina, where BAH is low anyways. He's probably in a decent sized city where BAH would be 2K+.
But wait, there's more. We're ignoring bennies that don't show up in the paycheck. Anon will get no-cost healthcare. Average value of that is around $4k/yr, but it could be a less if anon doesn't use it, or way more if he uses it to the max (gets eye surgery paid for, tons of dental work done, etc). Anon also gets the GI Bill, which on the low end is worth at least $50,000, and on the high end can be worth several hundred thousand dollars.
That's as an O1 with no TIS. For the first few years his pay raises are going to be fast and furious.
