You can get an infantry contract, but that only guarantees you'll be an Infantryman.
Your MOS won't be decided until SOI ITB. You'll be approached by the 0331 instructors (as well as all weapons platoon instructors).
Hell ask for volunteers and will have a number of slots to meet his quota, or the corps quota actually.
If not enough people volunteer they'll start pulling people. Too many and he will reject people, mostly by eyeball fucking them. Our 0331 said, "I like em big, and like them dumb." His words not mine.

I don't have the particulars on how competitive it is, I do know that they put a lot of weight into your SAT scores. But you don't "need" all pre reqs to apply. They have a kind of prep program for those who haven't completed all the pre reqs. I'm pretty sure USUHS (Military Medical School) is more selective though.
I have applied twice. My first time I had a combined GPA in the science pre reqs of 3.5. I didnt get in and retook my chemistry classes and bumped my GPA up to a 3.7. That's the only place I was really lacking so I'll find out if it was enough in a couple months.

Not enough people volunteered for 0351 and I was going to be voluntold I was going to be one because my GT was in the 120's, but then someone volunteered last second.
They want to allow the people who volunteer to get the slots if possible, because they're the ones that actually want to do it.
Just sound off and be very motarded when he asks for volunteers (you'll learn how to do that in boot camp).

Sorry! It's probably just me that's retarded. I've done medical work for friends and family who either can't or don't want to go to a real medical professional for a few years now. In-home nursing, wound-care, simple stuff like that. But I've never been formally trained, and I'm used to doing things as supplies and skill allow, meaning sometimes what I do is not necessarily what a doctor would do.
I'm worried that even after formal training, I might lapse into my fucky version of medicine and hurt someone. And I've never really dealt with life-threatening injury before, and the thought freaks me out, but I love what I do. I'm a good nurse (and doctor sometimes). And since I'm joining the military anyways, I thought maybe I could be a medic.
I guess I didn't really have a question, just needed to get my thoughts out in the open. But if you thoughts on it, I'd like to hear 'em.

There's a book called becoming the iceman that I see recommended a lot for PJ candidates. Swim a shitload, the main washout point is water confidence. You will be swimming a LOT and if you can hold your breath for a long time and swim well before you go will have an easier time. Also, you should be able to max out your PT before you get there because I believe the standard for graduating PJs is something insane like an 11 minute 2 mile or something.

0331's machina gunz 0341 mortarnigz and 0351 assmen were all in a weapons platoon. You wouldn't of been an 0341 who was in weapons platoon while machine gunners were put in a line.
We did fold weapons into line platoons in some deployments, but it was all or none.

Well, it's not really a self control thing. The area I live in, we only have a few doctors, and it's quite expensive. I just kinda got roped into doing it for family at a young age, then just continued (it's been five, maybe six years). I never do anything I know I can't do. I've never hurt anyone (well, more than they were hurt before), and I don't accept direct payment (usually in the form of delicious baked goods).
Thank you for your thoughts, though. I've never wanted to be a civilian nurse or doctor, ever, but I feel I may be useful as a combat medic. But like I said, I don't want to hurt anyone, and I damn well don't want to go to prison.
I'll research protocol, and take some med classes. Then I'll see how well I retain it, or if I have difficulty applying them.

On my first deployment my Senior Medic decided he should do a chrich on a guy that didn't really need it. It's a basic skill that we all learn, but there was no reason to do it. The bird arrived shortly after he placed the ET tube apparently. He did a hack job. Wrecked this dudes Chrichoid cartilage, but the guy survived. The patient had no contraindications for a King LT. He was just unable to maintain his own airway due to hypovolemic shock. Breathing was rapid and shallow, didn't need anything but an airway and a BVM.
When the patient arrived at the BAS the PROFIS Doctor flipped the fuck out. He was put on the patient admin desk for the rest of the deployment, and was demoted and force reclassed a few months after we got back. It shook me because I went from a new SPC with 19 months of service and an experienced senior in charge of me to the Company Senior in about 8 hours. So I've been a really big stickler for doing the right thing for your patient in a given situation ever since.
The skills of the job are not difficult, correct application of those skills in a given situation is the part that a lot of medics seem to have.
Give it a go, you are probably working at a much lower level than you would be as a line medic caring for 30-40 dudes in a rifle platoon, even in garrison. Get used to seeing dudes for their drippy dicks. As an infantry medic you'll see a lot of drippy dicks in garrison.

Nuke (ET especially) has good prospects for doing the same work in the civilian world, ESPECIALLY if you have a degree already, because without a degree you're still just a technician. ET has the best prospects because they're the ones that actually run the reactor and that's a big bucks job, but doing it in the civilian world is almost like not leaving the Navy, ie still stressful and long hours. You would think they would let you pick Chinese since you have a degree, but I promise they won't. They will give you whatever they feel like, regardless of whether you are a native speaker of something they want. It's pretty dumb, but what can you do. The pay for both is higher than base pay but not a huge amount. Somewhere in the range of $100-200 extra per month, and sub nukes get sub pay on top, and airborne linguists get flight duty pay. The biggest source of extra pay is the fact that both of those fields promote quickly- if you sign over 2 more years during nuke power school, you will already be a petty officer when you reach your first real assignment. Of course, if you don't do that, it can be harder to promote as a nuke because those guys take all/most of the billets.

So I submitted my faggot ass medical packet to the Navy doctors like a week or two before Christmas. Still haven't heard shit. Basically, don't.
Firstly, for money. You will probably not be a lifer. You'll be in for four to six years and then you'll get out. You will be "behind" in your earnings for the rest of your life. Don't listen to your recruiter, very few jobs actually care that you went into the service instead of the workforce. You'll be getting entry-level jobs while your age-group peers will already be working on getting their first large-scale project leads.
Secondly, the jobs you get. You, for all intents and purposes, will have no say where you are billeted. Annapolis grads (who are convinced they are some sort of aristocracy) get first dibs, then ROTC kids (who are just about the biggest cluster of fuckups imaginable) and then OCS grads.
You may get an engineering duty, but more likely than not, you will end up in the Staff Corps.
(Also, no one cares about your degree. They will put you in the Staff Corps anyway.)
Thirdly, being an officer sucks. You're not a leader. Petty officers and warrant officers are leaders. You, a commissioned officer, are a manager. You push papers. You attend meetings and stare at PowerPoints, then you make PowerPoints based on what you saw at those meetings and attend other meetings.
If you want a better military experience, enlist in a field you actually love. Enlisting with a degree is actually very common.
Otherwise, just get a real job.

I think the root of it is that OCS/ROTC/USNA do a shitty job of actually explaining what junior officers do, which is the exact same thing that E-1's are supposed to do: eyes open, mouth shut and learn.
Now, I was never disrespectful to a 2nd Lt, even one that deserved to be taken down a peg or two. (Anyone who tells you they flipped a butterbar off is straight-lying. Butterbars don't know how to lead, but they sure as shit know you're still supposed to salute them. They fucking like it. They look for it more than a Colonel does.)
In many situations, particularly once I made E-6, however, I would pull a new boot loot aside and explain, away from the younger men, of course, that the effective officer leans upon the experience of those in his command and trusts them to do their jobs. Basically, if you're in charge, you don't need to tell anyone you're in charge.
Another mistake they make is assuming their men are stupid simply because a lot of them are uneducated, or not bothering to find out if they, indeed are.

Hey guys. So I'm thinking of enlisting in some branch of the u.s. military. Preferably combat medic like 68w or fmf corpsman.
I talked to the navy recruiter and said that he couldn't guarantee me a spot. This seems to be a lie? Ive heard to never enlist without getting a written contract STATING what job. I assume the same applies to the navy?
Also in general how would I negotiate terms with my recruiter?
With that said how long will it take between signing a contract and getting shipped out to boot

You can't be guaranteed that.
You can be guaranteed a spot in Hospital Corps A-school.
When you pick your posting, you're basically guranteed greenside, since they're always in need and they're the minority of any class anyway.
However, that's where the guarantees end. You could be assigned to a Scout Sniper platoon or a Motor-T platoon or anything in between.
The Marines will put you where they need a Doc.
Anyone have experience with military doctors? Particularly Army or Navy? Thinking about going that route.

That might be true in the Marines, but I've seen the exact opposite in the Army. New officers generally go out of their way to dodge salutes. I've actually chewed out a few for it.

It was a lot better before I started dating my current wife(american) now that I think about it... There was this place in uijeongbu called the black lion bar or something by the theatre.
