From previous thread: Anyone know much about PJ selection? There's a lot of info out there on the 18 series but I can't find much about PJ. I'm know what my PT goals are before I enlist, anything specific I should be preparing for mentally? Books to read? Mental skills to develop like land nav?

I want to join the muhreens to shoot sandpeople and enjoy the thrill of almost becoming a wounded warriors member for life.

I want to shoot things innadesert, but it's peacetime and realistically I'm going to go to some boring college for some boring job in the lame medical field wasting my life away at the range.

Help me decide my future fellow degenerates

Anything I should know about increasing my chances of having a 0331 MOS in the marines?

I understand you'll need a GT score of atleast 80, but I'm not sure about the specifics.

Should I "study" anything, or just ask my recruiter and request this specifically?

How bad does being an 18D suck? Or being an army medic in general? I've been planning on enlisting for a while, and recently I've been thinking about going medic. I've done "unofficial healthcare" in the past, and always done well, but I've never had someone's life in my hands. Obviously being a medic is fucking stressful, but is it something that's consistently regretted?

We had a pretty good Medic thread going the other day, if anyone has questions about 68W I'd be down to lay down some knowledge.

Been a Medic for 7 years, Platoon Medic with a rifle company for 2 and Co senior for 4. Working at a hospital now waiting on word from IPAP.

Ask away.
>>
>>28612698

Im going to march right back into that recruiting office the day the block is up.
>>
>>28612736
i remember that, i was curious about the whole PA thing. i had no idea it was a job. but is it more competitive to get in than even med school? thats what someone said there iirc

>>28612652
You are a dumb motherfucker
>>
>>28612738
good stuff man. good luck.
>>
>>28612696

You can get an infantry contract, but that only guarantees you'll be an Infantryman.

Your MOS won't be decided until SOI ITB. You'll be approached by the 0331 instructors (as well as all weapons platoon instructors).

Hell ask for volunteers and will have a number of slots to meet his quota, or the corps quota actually.

If not enough people volunteer they'll start pulling people. Too many and he will reject people, mostly by eyeball fucking them. Our 0331 said, "I like em big, and like them dumb." His words not mine.
>>
>>28612806

So what I got from this is that I should just get swole
>>
>>28612824
Well, you got the dumb part down
>>
>>28612751
I don't have the particulars on how competitive it is, I do know that they put a lot of weight into your SAT scores. But you don't "need" all pre reqs to apply. They have a kind of prep program for those who haven't completed all the pre reqs. I'm pretty sure USUHS (Military Medical School) is more selective though.

I have applied twice. My first time I had a combined GPA in the science pre reqs of 3.5. I didnt get in and retook my chemistry classes and bumped my GPA up to a 3.7. That's the only place I was really lacking so I'll find out if it was enough in a couple months.
>>
>>28612843
clever girl
>>
>>28612763
You seriously couldn't pass the final PFA they give you like 10 fucking tries.
>>
>>28612701
Well, that was fuckin' dumb. But most likely no, recruiters tend not to do that type of shit because they don't care about what you've done or will do. Only that they can have your signature. If ever brought up deny and say it was a joke taken wrong.
>>
>>28612763
cheers mate
>>
>>28612824

It won't hurt your chances.

From my experience they take volunteers. Then they might check their scores to make sure they are qualified enough.

Not enough people volunteered for 0351 and I was going to be voluntold I was going to be one because my GT was in the 120's, but then someone volunteered last second.

They want to allow the people who volunteer to get the slots if possible, because they're the ones that actually want to do it.

Just sound off and be very motarded when he asks for volunteers (you'll learn how to do that in boot camp).

Have fun falling out of hikes carrying that extra shit as 0311's yell "hang in there man" as SSgt. Roid Rage chases you "out of his formation!!".

There are intellectual in the Infantry. Granted, its the minority and there are plenty off dumbasses. It's just a pussy ass excuse from a pseudo-intellectual who thinks he's too smart blah blah.

Just join and if you really are smart and hotshit get meritoriously promoted, and become king of the dipshits.

>>28613262
Forgot to add, he was my PSG when I first got to my platoon. Plenty of smart dudes in the infantry.
>>
>>28613216
Sorry! It's probably just me that's retarded. I've done medical work for friends and family who either can't or don't want to go to a real medical professional for a few years now. In-home nursing, wound-care, simple stuff like that. But I've never been formally trained, and I'm used to doing things as supplies and skill allow, meaning sometimes what I do is not necessarily what a doctor would do.

I'm worried that even after formal training, I might lapse into my fucky version of medicine and hurt someone. And I've never really dealt with life-threatening injury before, and the thought freaks me out, but I love what I do. I'm a good nurse (and doctor sometimes). And since I'm joining the military anyways, I thought maybe I could be a medic.

I guess I didn't really have a question, just needed to get my thoughts out in the open. But if you thoughts on it, I'd like to hear 'em.

Tl;Dr, backdoor doctor/nurse wonders if he should be a medic

>>28613160

Yeah, my GT is 189
>>
>>28613323

One of my best friends was an asvab waiver (I joined during the surge, I guess they did that back then). He was sharp as shit, fast tracked to promotion.

Just because a mother fucker doesn't know high school algebra doesn't mean anything really. Which is a decent portion of asvab score iirc.

I still tell him to use his GI Bill, but he says he is "too stupid for college". I tell him it's his attitude.

I just think that anons excuse is a piss poor one. Real life isn't 4chan memes. BTW I never polished any rocks... I sincerely hope they don't make army grunts do that. We did have to clean the barracks all day, but I know for a fact pogs do that + worse shit also.

There's a book called becoming the iceman that I see recommended a lot for PJ candidates. Swim a shitload, the main washout point is water confidence. You will be swimming a LOT and if you can hold your breath for a long time and swim well before you go will have an easier time. Also, you should be able to max out your PT before you get there because I believe the standard for graduating PJs is something insane like an 11 minute 2 mile or something.
>>
>>28613620
Right now my PT is decent, def not where I want it to be. My run is crap.

Water support technician is a pretty good job. You are more likely to be deployed than actual infantry because obviously water is pretty fucking important to FOBs in the desert. It's like motor-t where they frequently end up doing infantry stuff in self defense more than the actual infantry do.

Kek, I'm always the one recommending it.

It really is a great book and I learned a lot from it, not just about mediation either.

Adding to him: What you want is as much water confidence as possible,so swim and keep swimming. Look up a book called Total Immersion for Olympic techniques. Also, get used to the cold. Because the cadre will make sure you're cold all the time. I hear they spray you with cold water in the wee ours of the morning and then make you administer an IV.

I'm not saying your fake, just wrong.

0331's machina gunz 0341 mortarnigz and 0351 assmen were all in a weapons platoon. You wouldn't of been an 0341 who was in weapons platoon while machine gunners were put in a line.

We did fold weapons into line platoons in some deployments, but it was all or none.

More likely you were an 11C instead of an 11b and are ignorant of what you're talking about when it comes to the other branch.

Very helpful. Yea I grew up in water, never really had any problems or fear, other than getting dragged into a pier or jetty thinking them to be covering in razor sharp barnacles that would literally slice me into bits. But I think that had more to do with the warning signs. I've always had a weird fascination with warning signs.

We had the most volitle battle-space in our battalion AO. We also cleared our battlespace in the span of 2 weeks while the line companies were doing god knows what. Though to be fair our line companies were made up of misfits that the other battalions wanted to get rid of. I've been out for a while so I dont know what the corps is doing these days. The kids with the higher GT scores will go straight to 81's over 60's when they hit the fleet. 0331's I have no idea. Maybe they have a pull up contest to see who gets into CAAT.

You don't have to tell me about being on enemy lines. They say "being at the tip of the spear" is a marine meme, but no other force was as far south in trashcanland as we were. Even the flyboys avoided that area.
>>
>>28614608
what is so hard to understand? If you a higher GT score you'll be placed in 81's. Not only is that how my battalion did it but its how 3/2 and 1/6 did it.

My second deployment the only guys south of us were ODA. They would gas up at our PB and head down there. Maybe we were in the same area.

Here's a basic bitch question.

Is the military a good way to learn a skill to apply to a civilian career or is it pretty much to just get your college paid for? Are there any jobs that will ensure you're set up outside of the mil?
>>
>>28616678
i have friends, i've even convinced a few to visit here. i'm old, so a lot of my friends have already done the mil thing. they're probably the ones saying don't do it, or explaining the difference between jobs or about basic life.
>>
>>28616740
There's a few fields where the military is one of the best routes into the industry. Many jobs don't have that much civilian applicability though. All depends on your field.

You can't possibly plan for post military life until you're in it. Experiences will help you find what you want. Just decide which seems the most exciting path and start walking. There will be dozens of branches and the only bad ones involve negligent and stupid decisions and law breaking.

I know it's aerial gunner mixed with loadmaster and flight engineer so that sounds pretty cool. I'm taking a retrain class tomorrow and currently there's no restrictions on it.

11x w/opt 40 is for Ranger batt, but to you definitely don't meet age reqs for 18x. Unless you're about to turn 20.

I've never personally seen a GT higher than 142, or heard of anything over 150.

I don't know though.

>>28613422
If it's something you enjoy I guess go for it.

You should realize that it's a really stupid thing you do, in my opinion.

If you work outside the scope that your BN PA allows you to work yo I will lose your credentials, and could face imprisonment depending on the circumstances.

I don't really expect you'll stop what you're doing, and the fact that you do it doesn't really speak to your discipline/self control. Join if you want, but just realize that you'll be working for a licensed provider who had to answer to an MD, if you fuck him up they will fuck you up.

>>28616625
Yeah they use those. If you have a degree and you're GPA is good you may want to consider applying for civilian programs, the 2 years of IPAP are fucking intense. In that time you complete your bachelor's and earn a masters. Apply for civil programs and contact an AMEDD Recruiter after you graduate. Unless you have your heart set on being a Medic first.

>>28613620

The both of you need to start rucking, yo uh can get a used ALICE for cheap. I live rucking. Start deadlifting too. If you're gonna make it in any Infantry battalion, especially regiment, you need to be able to Outlook everyone of your guys.

You don't need to be the strongest or the fastest, but you have to be the highest effort. I wish I would have kept the stuff I posted the other day, but when I'm not on my phone I'll give you guys some good work out guidelines.

>I don't really expect you'll stop what you're doing, and the fact that you do it doesn't really speak to your discipline/self control.

Well, it's not really a self control thing. The area I live in, we only have a few doctors, and it's quite expensive. I just kinda got roped into doing it for family at a young age, then just continued (it's been five, maybe six years). I never do anything I know I can't do. I've never hurt anyone (well, more than they were hurt before), and I don't accept direct payment (usually in the form of delicious baked goods).

Thank you for your thoughts, though. I've never wanted to be a civilian nurse or doctor, ever, but I feel I may be useful as a combat medic. But like I said, I don't want to hurt anyone, and I damn well don't want to go to prison.

I'll research protocol, and take some med classes. Then I'll see how well I retain it, or if I have difficulty applying them.
>>
>>28617304
I'm glad you didn't take that negatively, obviously your situation is different than my own, so the concept is pretty foreign to me. I've had tricare all my life. Never paid a cent for the doctor. So I understand we have very different experiences.

On my first deployment my Senior Medic decided he should do a chrich on a guy that didn't really need it. It's a basic skill that we all learn, but there was no reason to do it. The bird arrived shortly after he placed the ET tube apparently. He did a hack job. Wrecked this dudes Chrichoid cartilage, but the guy survived. The patient had no contraindications for a King LT. He was just unable to maintain his own airway due to hypovolemic shock. Breathing was rapid and shallow, didn't need anything but an airway and a BVM.

When the patient arrived at the BAS the PROFIS Doctor flipped the fuck out. He was put on the patient admin desk for the rest of the deployment, and was demoted and force reclassed a few months after we got back. It shook me because I went from a new SPC with 19 months of service and an experienced senior in charge of me to the Company Senior in about 8 hours. So I've been a really big stickler for doing the right thing for your patient in a given situation ever since.

The skills of the job are not difficult, correct application of those skills in a given situation is the part that a lot of medics seem to have.

Give it a go, you are probably working at a much lower level than you would be as a line medic caring for 30-40 dudes in a rifle platoon, even in garrison. Get used to seeing dudes for their drippy dicks. As an infantry medic you'll see a lot of drippy dicks in garrison.

How about in a different field, not therapy or counseling?
Something like research, product design, training or psyops (Sorry if I used all the wrong terms)
>>
>>28617541
No, no, I asked for your opinion. I'm glad you responded.
We live in a very poor part of a very expensive state. I (and the few others in my area who do this work for their respective families) am the person you go to for minor things, so you don't have to pay a $200 consultation fee, plus whatever they charge for material and labor. It's really become out of hand.

But anyways, that is awful! If I understand correctly (I'm sorry, I don't know a lot of the jargon) he totally wrecked a guy's throat when he only needed a tracheotomy? That's terrible.
See, that's exactly what's making me nervous. I have a few procedures I do, and I (almost) always do them the same way. So when new things get introduced, and there's only a few moments to decide, I'm afraid I'm going to flounder. But at the same time, I feel like, given enough practise, I could be really good at it.

And I've never had to deal with drippy dicks, miraculously, but I HAVE had to open staph sores on people's asses. Nothing like pulling on someone's anus and watching vanilla soft serve crawl out.

I want to operate. But that's not the point of this post. So we're not going to argue on Wether I can or cant make it.

I'm getting a waiver for my juvenile record.

I currently have a secret security clearance for my current job.

My recruiter said I can't enlist with 18x or option 40 because of my juvenile record and clearance tomfoolery.
He wasn't being completely clear, which brings up this suspicion
He says even though I can't enlist with 18x or option 40, but once I'm in the Army, I can drop the packet and choose to go to one of them.

I figured whatever I'll get 11x option 4 and be a PT stud to increase my odds.
>inb4 be a dirt bag on purpose to be grey man

So is my recruiter just being lazy and not want to do the work to get me 18x or an option 40 or is he right?
He's not pushing me into any other MOSs which is why I think it's legit,
But I'm also wondering if he's just fed up with all the paperwork I've caused him to do for the waiver and he just wants to slam me to MEPS and be done with it all

AF aviation would be the cushiest, Navy aviation is still fairly cushy and you have a chance of travelling, linguist is a good job that teaches valuable skills but training is very stressful and difficult and you won't get to pick Chinese, you might be able to state it as a preference but you'll get whatever they want you to learn. Nuke is probably the worst of the 4 but has the best post-mil prospects, assuming you want to keep doing stressful nuke stuff in the civilian world.

And I don't think line scores can exceed 150 now that I've done some research so I must be just in the 140-150 range. What are things you would suggest becoming familiar with should I seek one of those MOS's? I've begun reading about land nav though I'm incredibly familiar with it already through hunting in a 1,000 some acre logging plot in northern Wisconsin. I work out regularly and run when it's not subzero, started with Rippetoe's SS 5x5 and moved into creating my routine, very leg oriented in anticipation of running fucking everywhere. Familiar with shooting all sorts of fudd shit and some none fudd shit. I'd like to pick up an AR15 this summer and practice the irons for better marksmanship. Nuke (ET especially) has good prospects for doing the same work in the civilian world, ESPECIALLY if you have a degree already, because without a degree you're still just a technician. ET has the best prospects because they're the ones that actually run the reactor and that's a big bucks job, but doing it in the civilian world is almost like not leaving the Navy, ie still stressful and long hours. You would think they would let you pick Chinese since you have a degree, but I promise they won't. They will give you whatever they feel like, regardless of whether you are a native speaker of something they want. It's pretty dumb, but what can you do. The pay for both is higher than base pay but not a huge amount. Somewhere in the range of $100-200 extra per month, and sub nukes get sub pay on top, and airborne linguists get flight duty pay. The biggest source of extra pay is the fact that both of those fields promote quickly- if you sign over 2 more years during nuke power school, you will already be a petty officer when you reach your first real assignment. Of course, if you don't do that, it can be harder to promote as a nuke because those guys take all/most of the billets.

Well the majority of people on 4chan are from the US but this thread is for anyone from any country. We get a decent number of Australians, Canadians and Brits and sometimes someone from Germany or a random eastern European country. Might be hard to get information though since most of the thread is American.

I worked with some Corpsman from 3/5 when I was stationed in korea for a CALFX. My only experience with Navy Corpsman. The two I had the most contact with were monsters. I know nothing about SARC, sorry bud.

Looks like you have everything under control. Don't bother trying to teach yourself irons. Just go to basic and let them teach you, better than having to unlearn bad habits.

Don't think anyone gives a shit if you can pick a lock though super soldier.

It's not hard, but it's not necessarily easy either. Definitely easier than marines and army boot camp, hardest thing for most people was being so isolated from their loved ones and the outside world.

Not really, no. They pick it for you at random, which is determined on what division you'll be put in during P-Days and whichever ship has an opening for a divison. You find out what ship you're going to on P-5.
If you're a male you can go to any of the ships, if female only three of them are off limits to you. If spec ops/warfare then you'll be going to the Arleigh Burke, that's where the 800 divs go.

Hey guys weigh in for me:

So I switched my papers from the Army to the Navy. I have one nut and some facial scarring that I would need to get a waiver for. So I submitted my faggot ass medical packet to the Navy doctors like a week or two before Christmas. Still haven't heard shit. My recruiter is an African dude with a really thick accent and idk if he really knows whats going on. I keep asking him about whether he's heard anything, does it usually take this long, etc. He said he doesn't know and hasn't heard anything.

Should I keep waiting for the Navy to get back to me in like 3 years time or should I call up the Army recruiter and see about switching all my paperwork? I mean I'm usually very patient but all this waiting is just pushing back my ship date and thats getting me anxious.

Is this wait time normal? Is the Army usually more forgiving and quicker about these things?
>>

call another recruiter or go see the dumb one you already have.

waivers take some time, took me six months to finally go to meps after trying to get three waivers, the fact that it's during the holidays isn't helping either. Keep contact with your recruiter, that's as much as you can do.

Poorfag here. I have a government-sponsored scholarship for college that pays for roughly 80% of my college tuition. However, I don't have the ability to pay for the rest of the tuition and other expenses. I already work a job and a freelance thing on the side, but it doesn't seem like it's enough. I don't want to take out any student loans, would joining the Nat'l Guard be a good option for me to help pay for college?
>>
>>28621211
>I'm about to finish my bachelor in EE and been thinking about becoming an officer in the navy. Anyone got some experiences/stories or warnings?

Basically, don't.

Firstly, for money. You will probably not be a lifer. You'll be in for four to six years and then you'll get out. You will be "behind" in your earnings for the rest of your life. Don't listen to your recruiter, very few jobs actually care that you went into the service instead of the workforce. You'll be getting entry-level jobs while your age-group peers will already be working on getting their first large-scale project leads.

Secondly, the jobs you get. You, for all intents and purposes, will have no say where you are billeted. Annapolis grads (who are convinced they are some sort of aristocracy) get first dibs, then ROTC kids (who are just about the biggest cluster of fuckups imaginable) and then OCS grads.
You may get an engineering duty, but more likely than not, you will end up in the Staff Corps.
(Also, no one cares about your degree. They will put you in the Staff Corps anyway.)

Thirdly, being an officer sucks. You're not a leader. Petty officers and warrant officers are leaders. You, a commissioned officer, are a manager. You push papers. You attend meetings and stare at PowerPoints, then you make PowerPoints based on what you saw at those meetings and attend other meetings.

If you want a better military experience, enlist in a field you actually love. Enlisting with a degree is actually very common.

Otherwise, just get a real job.

>>
>>28621863
Me? No. I enlisted in the Marines. My best friend from college went to OCS. I got to do exactly what I wanted. He got to be an officer in the Navy Supply Corps. He never even went to sea. The closest he got was a Naval Air Station.

And here he was, telling me I was going to be a dumb grunt. Joke's on him, though. I not only enjoyed my time in the Marines, I was an Arty POG.

>>

>>
>>28622058
Not to be an officer.

Don't get me wrong, the military is great, but I wouldn't take a commission if you gave it to me. It takes a certain kind of person to be an officer in the military, one that is a political animal, a career-driven individual who can swim through a sea of bullshit and find a pearl.

Too many guys I know went in as officers with truly no idea what being an officer was, just that it was something that required an education. (Nor, for that matter, did they have any idea of what leadership is, assuming it's blind obedience and obeisance verging on worship.)

Not him, but they don't learn from their NCOs enough. Your basically a private with better pay and more responsibility. Thats what people think of you as a butter bar. Learn from your NCOs and listen to them because enlisted already will generally respect their authority much more than yours.

>What's the best insight to the leadership that Officers have to go through that you can give?
>Where do most of them fuck up?

I think the root of it is that OCS/ROTC/USNA do a shitty job of actually explaining what junior officers do, which is the exact same thing that E-1's are supposed to do: eyes open, mouth shut and learn.
Now, I was never disrespectful to a 2nd Lt, even one that deserved to be taken down a peg or two. (Anyone who tells you they flipped a butterbar off is straight-lying. Butterbars don't know how to lead, but they sure as shit know you're still supposed to salute them. They fucking like it. They look for it more than a Colonel does.)

In many situations, particularly once I made E-6, however, I would pull a new boot loot aside and explain, away from the younger men, of course, that the effective officer leans upon the experience of those in his command and trusts them to do their jobs. Basically, if you're in charge, you don't need to tell anyone you're in charge.

Another mistake they make is assuming their men are stupid simply because a lot of them are uneducated, or not bothering to find out if they, indeed are.

>see boot loot doing PT wearing an Indiana University t-shirt
>be University of Illinois alum
>light-heartedly boo Hoosiers
Are you a fan of the Illini, sergeant?
I sure am, LT.
Are you going to go there when you're out of the Corps? Use that GI Bill money?
No, sir, I've been accepted to a grad program that's a little closer to home.
>boot loot has stupid look on his face
W-what did you graduate with?
A B.S. in Computer Science, sir.

>Field Artillery

If six 155mm howitzers firing doesn't make your dick move, maybe artillery isn't for you.

The best part:
>Panic over the radio. Grunts are pinned and taking fire. They call us.
>We cum steel 20 miles away.
>Next radio transmission "Nice shooting, gun bunnies."

The bad part:
Your knees: shot
Your back: not as bad as your knees
YOUR HEARING: ZIERING? IAN ZIERING? FROM 90210? FUCK YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Also, Arty, as you might imagine, involves a lot of logistics, and that means a lot of bullshit busywork.

I loved it, though. I would joke, "Oh, we're basically like Scout Snipers, except our gun needs to be flown in by a C-130, takes nine guys to fire, and kills dozens of people at once."

One of the worst things:
Fort Sill, OK is where Arty School is. It sucks. It's in the middle of nowhere and it's Army, so you're practically subletting.

One of the best things:
First time I got to pull the lanyard on a 155mm, I had this idiotic grin on my face.
Gunnery Sergeant asks me why I'm smiling like a fucking retard.
>Because that was the coolest thing I've ever seen, Gunnery Sergeant!

Hey guys. So I'm thinking of enlisting in some branch of the u.s. military. Preferably combat medic like 68w or fmf corpsman.

I talked to the navy recruiter and said that he couldn't guarantee me a spot. This seems to be a lie? Ive heard to never enlist without getting a written contract STATING what job. I assume the same applies to the navy?

Also in general how would I negotiate terms with my recruiter?

With that said how long will it take between signing a contract and getting shipped out to boot

You can't be guaranteed that.

You can be guaranteed a spot in Hospital Corps A-school.
When you pick your posting, you're basically guranteed greenside, since they're always in need and they're the minority of any class anyway.

However, that's where the guarantees end. You could be assigned to a Scout Sniper platoon or a Motor-T platoon or anything in between.

The Marines will put you where they need a Doc.

That might be true in the Marines, but I've seen the exact opposite in the Army. New officers generally go out of their way to dodge salutes. I've actually chewed out a few for it.

It was a lot better before I started dating my current wife(american) now that I think about it... There was this place in uijeongbu called the black lion bar or something by the theatre.

The bartender there had the sexiest fucking smile. We had sex for about 3 months. Big ass, titties, and the softest skin. We said about 12 words to eachother, but my katusa would help me text her. I brought the katusa to translate for me for our first date, but we agreed it was wierd so I just showed up at the bar and bought beer until closing and then we'd hit her place. Pretty dope.

I did save a lot of money because I was at KTC for 6 of the remaining 8 months. But I didn't get to see my girlfriend a whole lot because she was stationed down at camp Carroll.

Eh, not my jam. I like it in the states. Our generation Koreans are too fucking racist dude. Got in altercations all the time and KSP will fuck you up if they get called and you're there regardless of who is at fault.
