You're not a 35A, anon, you're an 09S. Halfway through OCS you'll get branched into what the fuck ever. MI is the third hardest branch to get out of OCS after finance and aviation.

I would start researching 42B, 74A, 88A, and 92A to see which one you like best.

I guess things are different for the regular Army. I'm going NYARNG

Apparently they had 3 MI slots open that needed to be filled. I've selected one of those vacancies for myself.

Basically I looked at a spreadsheet and picked the three I wanted. The others were also awesome, essentially Human Resources.

If I fail out of OCS, I'm contracted for all 35 series MOS's. No 35P's were open though, a shame really. I pick up languages easily and already speak German fluently.

I'm mostly afraid of being 8 years older than other recruits at basic. Christ, how much more shit do you get for being older than 25?

Oh, yeah, carry on then.

Just be prepared for OCS to be full retard. It's not hard. There's no training, it's just stupidity and hazing. Endure it for 12 weeks and it's over.

>I'm mostly afraid of being 8 years older than other recruits at basic. Christ, how much more shit do you get for being older than 25?

It's NBD. I was 26 in basic, there were up to 41 year olds in there with me. Same in OCS.

At least for SFAS packets your CoC can't technically say no (if I remember correctly, may have changed). If you put the packet in they have to send it.

>Working under people that would do that sounds like hell.

People are petty. Including people in the Army.

But from their perspective they're also losing someone who has responsibilities (an NCO, trainer for a weapons system, team leader, or whatever), or they're losing a good junior enlisted (if you're not a shit bag).

That's not the same thing. You're confusing some bureaucratic decision not to promote someone with an individual deciding to potentially hinder their own team by leaving a personnel gap.

From their perspective you are potentially leaving a capability or training gap, which in real life could cause the death of one or more people you actually work with, because you selfishly want to be one of those cool commando high speed types from the vidya.

>>28602308
>Really there is more sense if denying the officer a promotion

There really isn't. The officer corps is designed for officers to move through different roles, from platoon time to company XO to company time to staff (if you make your 10 year HYT).

The enlisted ranks are not designed for that.

>>Good soldier is wasted in grunt role
>>Wants to contribute to the army in a better position

The army is just as capable of training someone else to do that job as they are of training someone to replace you.

The difference is that while they are training someone to replace you your job goes undone.

You're not some special snowflake protagonist of your own story who gets the support of his CoC because he wants to go play commando.

I agree with you anon that if someone wants to go to SFAS their peers and leadership should set them up for success.

But the fact that you can't see it from their perspective just shows how autistic you are.
>>

>>
>>28602331
>are you fucking retarded?

In a combat arms unit, a capability gap very much can lead to someone getting killed.
>>
>>28602023
>Can you retry RASP or Selection if you wash out of op40/18x?
If you are removed from training for failing lanes/evolutions, you may re-attempt at a later date - which will also be influenced by what was documented during your initial attempt.

If you are medically removed from training, you may either recycle or attempt at a later date.

If you VW, you will not be given the time of day, let alone wasting another slot.

There are people who have failed after multiple attempts, who later made the grade. A friend of mine had to attempt SFAS three times before he got his long tab.
>>
>>28602327

>Were the Marines ill mannered or just stupid? Stories?
No.

In intel work it's not a good idea for everyone to just blindly defer to the highest ranking person in the room because that person may be a complete moron.

Muuhhhhrrreeeens don't see it that way, and in the courses he taught that had Marine students they tended to blindly agree with the highest ranking person in the room.

A friend of mine who took the long walk, went to selection (passed), and they told him no thanks. He came back, deployed, still did his job above standard as if nothing ever happened. He was contacted a few months after returning from deployment and left for OTC.
>>
>>28602438
>You implied it

No, you inferred it.

And then turned it into a straw man and beat it up.

>Your reasoning is BS

1. it's not my reasoning, I'm not your CO shitting all over your operator dreams here kiddo.

2. It really isn't. If they were to deploy tomorrow and you stepped out to pursue your commando dreams and that left a capability gap, that might actually get someone killed.

and

3. They just really don't want to lose a soldier with enough experience, maturity, and training to get selected.

>if an officer is fucking a soldier with shady shit like punishing them for even trying and destroying paperwork that asshole is NOT doing it for noble goals.

It's not about your value judgment, it's about their perception.

It's the same reason people can't understand why crazy Christian fundies shoot up abortion clinics.

It's fantastic, for me anyways. I had it done long before I went to the 75th - so I think I can comment on it pretty well.

I had astigmatism beforehand; night vision wasn't effected at all, but I would get slight star bursts/halos.

Only downside was recovery - which fucking sucked. Bad. I have a very high tolerance for pain, but fuck it was bad. Eyesight took a while to return as well, which honestly is fucking terrifying.
>>
>>28602505

No, I'm saying you're committing a fundamental attribution error you fucking mongoloid.

And you're conflating two separate arguments you made.

At this point you need to just stay away from MEPS because you're too dumb to ever be in the military.
>>
>>28602519
>Oh, they actually tell you why you weren't selected so you know what to work on? That's way better than I expected.
As long as you're a candidate that did very well/has very redeeming qualities.

>Sounds like your friend is the kind of guy for the job. Is his performance after returning to his unit the main contributing factor in the callback?
No idea, didn't tell him. Nothing about selection is standard for them, and no standards are ever put in print or passed along. Even for 99% guys in the unit.

Go to the gym Anon.

I work with a lot of CAG guys, most of them fall into two categories, fitness wise; gym rats (whether it's crossfit/powerlifting/etc) or super endurance freaks (ultramarathons/ironmans/etc).

They want someone with intelligence, a high level of trainability, mental fortitude, and is also a physical freak of nature.

I'm not saying you need to be ripped like Arnie, but it's time to lose the perception that the ideal SOF body is skinnyfat - which is something this board loves to regurgitate.
>>
>>28602576
That depends;

If you can pay for it on your own/with insurance without it financially burdening you? Sure why not.

If not? Be aware that in the Army, preference will always given to SOF personnel first. Then you will have a wait list of other people who signed up long before you were. But it will be 100% free.
>>
>>28602629
Did anyone actually say anything to the contrary? I want to go 18x (No not to be a door kicker, I'm more interested in the traditional force multiplication training/liason role they played) but I'm not talking to a recruiter until I can get a perfect APFT score.

Many people. Hence the filename.

Also, best of luck with the 18X route. SF is a tough gig. And a lot of it takes a large amount of patience.

Doesn't hurt to get with a recruiter beforehand though. If you haven't check out ProfessionalSoldiers and find a mentor. If you have a NGSF team local, it might also pay off to try and talk to a SF recruiter.

Government agencies and government contractors are a big one. Even a low end IT helpdesk job can be a 70,000/yr contracting gig if you have to work with TS systems so they can't outsource it to India.

>>
>>28604819
Not him, but I personally went from 270 to 190 mostly just by starving myself. I wasn't consistent at all with exercise, but aimed for a 1500 calorie diet.

Once I hit 190, I started exercising a lot more regularly and eating better. The more cardio I did, the more I could eat like I used to. Now I'm 183, eating 2.5k calories or so. I've still got a ways to go but it worked for me.
>>

What did you eat during your starvation period? Couple of eggs and some OATZ?
>>

>how did you lose weight?
Roughly a 1000 cal deficit, as you said.

For the first three months, I didn't do any exercise at all, but a month ago I started C25K and that has been progressing smoothly.

Also, and this might be bullshit, but I've been told that as your weight increases it exponentially increases the amount of force that is put on your knees. If you're significantly overweight, like more than 40 pounds, you might want to wait to lose some weight first before you start running.

>But does anyone know any specifics?

It depends on

1 what your MOS is

and

2 what you're looking to do when you get out

Also you have about 2 years from the time you leave any position where a TS/SCI is required to get back into a position where a TS/SCI is required or your clearance will be considered "lapsed".

The difference between having an "active" and a "lapsed" clearance is that a new SF86 is required if it's "lapsed". Which means it's more time consuming for your clearance to be turned back on.

The reason this happens is that you only have a clearance so long as you are in a slot that requires that clearance. So when you leave a job/slot/position and no longer require it it's "turned off". Your clearance doesn't follow you. However if you've had a TS/SCI before it's easier to get it back which is why companies that have positions which require it head hunt for cleared people. They prefer if it's "active" because it means less time and money to get cleared again because you don't require the full investigation.
>>
>>28604706
>surely nobody thinks that? lmao

I personally didn't hear it much from people who had never been in, but I heard that type of thing from guys who were already in for awhile (not SOF or SF) or NCOs (not SOF or SF).

I imagine a lot of it is confirmation bias from them doing the terrible APFT focused (cross country with some push ups and sit ups) PT for the last ten years.
>>
>>28606181
I'm going in as a 35F in the Army. This is pretty interesting, would it not be a big deal to have your clearance lapse? If it is, then I guess I'll have to see if I can pursue internships or anything like that while I'm going to college.
>>
>>28605938
>Is there any benefit to joining the military with some higher education, but no actual degree?

I think you get a bump to e2 or e3 (need a complete four year degree for e4).
>>
>>28606235
>would it not be a big deal to have your clearance lapse?

Not really.

If it's "lapsed" that just means you need to do a new SF86 and an investigation. But if you were already able to get a TS/SCI, didn't lose your clearance for something stupid or criminal, and didn't do something stupid (rack up tons of debt and become delinquent) or criminal between the time you left and the time you do a new SF86, you'll likely be fine.

If you want to keep doing 35F stuff after you get out, you'll need at least a 2 year degree. Before I got out DoD put out a new hiring requirement for intel contractors saying that minimum civilian education was an Associate's or equivalent.

I knew more than one person who was contracting at CENTCOM in Tampa who were told to start school within the next six months or they were going to be let go.
>>
>>28606283
Neat, thank you very much. I was planning on going to college when I finished regardless, so it's good to know that it won't really hurt my opportunities to have my clearance lapse.
>>
>>28606309
I want to clarify a bit about the DoD contracting requirements.

A lot of people that I've talked to don't know how contract hiring works.

Most people think you get hired by, for example, Xe, KBR, Dyncorp, Triple Canopy etc. and then you just go do static security, WPS contracts, drive trucks, cook food, do intel stuff (a few smaller companies do intel contracting as well as some of the larger companies).

When you're hired, the State Department, Department of Defense, or whoever is putting out the contract requirement, makes the final determination on hiring.

So a company very well may want you because of your experience/resume, but you may not get hired because an HR person at DoD/DoS didn't like your resume, you didn't meet certain requirements (civilian education), or what have you. I actually ran into this problem.

I was ETSing, and in contact with a contracting company that offered me $155k to go to Afghanistan after seeing my resume and doing a phone interview (I was deployed at the time). I was also recommended by someone the recruiter knew (an NCO that I worked with). But I didn't have a degree, so that was what was holding me back.

By the time I finished my AA my clearance was going to lapse soon so I just decided to stay in school and finish my Bachelor's.

Infantry and artillery are open to those individuals without a waiver (which I'm pretty sure you can't get in this case, seeing as it's a lifetime incurable condition). So there are other MOSs and even combat ones open to those individuals, but I think it would be best if I got a more recent eye exam that could test for potentionally disqualifying eye conditions and all that shit.

CTN is probably the best job in the Navy, but it's one of the worst if you want to be stationed all over the world. CTNs work for the USA from the USA.

Take 2 weeks of leave and see Japan.

meg I need your help.
Today I was given my monthly non-promo counseling. No big deal, that's been standard for the last 11 months or so. However today there was an extra line on the counseling. I am going to be barred from reenlisting if I don't go to a promotion board.

Now I'm not butthurt, and I ETS in about 11 months. But is there anything I need to be wary of in order to protect myself? Is being barred inherently a negative thing? Or should I just keep on keeping on until I separate?

If you're in pretty good shape and know how to listen you'll be okay

Not going to affect your bennies if that is what you're worried about. Commanders can bar you pretty much whenever they feel like it, it is just that most don't bother.

If it's feasible, I'd just go to the board and get promoted though. Looks better on your civvy resume if nothing else.

There was an anon a couple of threads ago who was in. He did not recommend it.

Also, they only take about 10% of applicants.

You're not fucked at all, since you're probably not going to make it.
