Last thread: >>2567426 >>2567426

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, do you know the mahou kotobas that turn it all upside down?

Besides books of fundamentals Is there anything that assumes you know that and actually explain and or teach the aesthetics of manga/anime and isn't simply just books of anime drawings and character turnarounds?

I've been trying to make a new personal style hybridizing anime with my western style for a comic.

Past that anyone come by the Heroes & Heroines Japanese Character design book?
I like the series variety in it.

>Past that anyone come by the Heroes & Heroines Japanese Character design book?

I have it, and its no more than 2 pages of promo art per game for a variety of games and anime. You can get more on the net.

Btw, there are many on the lists that would get bashed on /ic/ and maybe even in the /beg/ thread.
>>
>>2574535
There are a lot of issues with this image not counting using your own art as the OP. There's nothing wrong with simplifying things, but if you're going to do it, it needs to look clean and intentional.
There is very little value structure/ variation here and material identification is completely absent. Meaning there isn't much to tell us about forms and the hair doesn't look like hair and the skin doesn't look like skin. If you fill a new layer with black and set the mode to saturation, you'll see what I mean.
Also, the hair's value range is about the same as the skin. Value organization helps sell differences in materials. Except for the "headband" everything in the image falls between 10% gray to 40% gray value wise. This is why your drawing looks washed out. Try to think about your darkest darks and your lightest lights. How material behaves when you shine light on it is important, too. Subsurface scattering is an example
Then there's the anatomy. It seems like you're not certain about how the body is put together, so you hide it by obscuring major forms in shadow. The "keystone" part of the nose and it's relation to the eye socket is a big offender here. Turning arms and torsos into blobs does not solve the issue. Try to keep a mid line so features don't skew towards one side of the face/ torso.
Gathering reference and learning how to control your edges (lost, soft, hard) can help with this. Using dolls as reference might help since the features are already exaggerated and the forms are easier to see.

Hope this critique was helpful.

You can't teach anime. It's a word that refers to a specific region than any style. It's better to study different professional artists and adapt that into your own work. Some good books would be Capcom Design Works, SF25, Robot, Pixiv Almanac, and the Ys art book. I'll also suggest Akira Club just because Otomo's art is godlike.

can you explain and defend what you're doing there with that grid?

Lol you're using grid to place hips/shoulders, and you're using 2 points in the horizon that make a huge distorsion because both of them are so close/your figure is outside the area between those dots that is keep things without distorsion

just read the principles behidn perspective distorsion and you will get it

use the grid to understand where is the floor, not to rely on them all the paralels of your figure, that's horrible

Also redlined it a bit, I hope its al right, I'm quite tired so I'm not sure if I did it proper

Perhaps you're rushing a bit too fast, try to get the gesture right first, then the proportions, then try to build ontop of the basic shapes such as cylinders, boxes ect.

When it belong to nowhere? There's no point trying things that are so ambitious and complex when your fundamentals are so lacking.
Do you realize you don't even know how to draw a line? This line quality is so bad that the only excuse would be a muscular degenerative illness.
But it's not enough, you have to put this with absence of taste for colors, your complete obliviousness for perspective, grotesque anatomy, in a completely retarded package.
There's a reason people don't reply to you. They don't want to lose their time on somebody who, given is current output, seem hopeless. Not because you're bad, mind you; because you do everything in such a retarded manner that it seem impossible to imagine that you can understand any helpful advice.

-wobbly lines in almost every area of the drawing
-right-girls tighs are horrid looking sausages. you don't seem to know the anatomy of the area
>left-girs face is a catastrophe. study the structure of the head and face, look up refs when it comes to difficult angles.
-BG is a complete afterthought and it doesn't even fit with the rest of the image

all in all i do like what you attempted with the girl on the right. but you didn't have any ideas for the rest of the drawing it seems.

>>2575477
that proportion grid is wrong. remember that different head sizes result in different proportions.
you're like 4-5 heads tall. the head is almost as big as the torso. both the arms and the legs are way too long for this kind of setup.
study the proportions other artists use, as well as real life proportions.
>>
>>2575535
you should at least sketch the second eye, then you may have realized that the eye doesn't fit with the nose at all. all in all the semi realism isn't working out. it just looks like a big head. some features really need repositioning and the eyes probably should be a bit bigger.

in terms of value you didn't listen to the other anons advice at all. it still looks very washed out.
you don't need to make the shadows darker, that wasn't the point.
notice that even the dark materials in your drawing are at very light percentages.

i didn't check it with an eyedropper, but when comparing the skin with the supposedly WHITE dress and the dark sleeves, i doubt that they cover a wide range of value.
the lights aren't light and the darks aren't dark. everything is just washed out.

try to pick up on the idea of local value.

neat. your back muscles could need some deeper studies.
the neck kinda just fuses with the shoulders in that middle drawing. maybe try to define the traps more.

other than that it looks just lik ea human with a chickenhead. not bad, but nothing standout either imo. very humanoid looking. you could try a longer neck and see how that looks. you could get more expressive using the neck. or use the posture to emphasize the non-humanoid side. just some things to consider.

i sketched it, but at the end lost that layer, this is not how it is on the final artwork, might use it to re adjust it

in terms of value, I didn't really wanted to push hair from skin, dress already makes contrast to brighter/darker, so all contrast are made on features

I failed to be subtle tho, it needs sighly more contrast with temperature/saturation and value, not saying otherwise

>>
>>2576251
you just gotta measure it out. it's not as difficult as you might believe. it just takes time.

>>2576249
nah it just doesn't look right. it's also because the hair doesn't follow the proper head structure. it makes the forehead bulge out. you really need to study the head and face in general.

>in terms of value, I didn't really wanted to push hair from skin,
why?
there is no contrast, no range. just look at the hair, it is only minimally darker than the skin. tone differences of 10-15% are for details and barely add to the range. you need more range.

this doesn't mean more range in the skin (actually too much range in the skin will make it look bad), you need more range IN GENERAL.
you need variations across the entire image, otherwise it'll all flatten out.
it'd be fine if you use lines to support the drawing but alas, you don't.

colorpick pic related and see if you can guess the values right.
colorpick any of your favorite drawings and see how the value varies from area to area. and they probably go much more into the middle values than you do.
>>
>>2576249
another example for values.
notice how the hair is darker than the skin, which results in a fair and brighter skin. it's the difference that makes us perceive light or dark, not the fixed value.
if you want bright skin, you need something dark to make it so. same in reverse.

you need to push your values more, same with saturation. again, push for range.
>>
>>2575535
Wow. After all the hate this one got, I just wanted to say I think it's nice. Pale-pastel pallet with enough realistic aspects to color the potential characters, and far enough from anime to make it believable, each girl with their own unique characteristics. The hair and accessories look nice. Very bold with the flat planes. I think it's pretty solid for what it is. I mean, I think it's creepy, but I think it's solid. Strong technical ability.

Random Catgirl sketch. I had near no time to art today. She's a bit too disinterested. I think I may toss some expressions together later to practice. My faces always feel really flat.

>>2577531

Thanks friend.

>>2577528

Nice Shibari anon. My only real thing I can point out is she has a super thin stomach region/obliques. That may just be me misunderstanding the perspective though.

>>2577544

There's quite a few issues anon. Namely your form and pose is incredibly off. She's leaning on her side, but her legs imply she's at an angle. It kind of feels like you made everything from the upper half in one way and didn't know what the bottom half of her was suppose to be doing. Values are funky as well. Also I don't know what res you were working in but this image is awful blurry. Maybe that's just the brush but it's a bit off.

lineweight is what bothers me the most, you really need to work on that.
>>
>>2577992
herm, that's true, I always had that in the back of my mind but never really bothered.
What do you recommend to get better on that? exercises, resources?
>>
>>2577998
The best way is usually to study other works you like that do it well, and apply their methods.

For this kind of style consider making the outline of each characters thicker, and thinner lines for the "inside". Also, instead of keeping everything in black put them in color darker than the one you applied of the side, will give more volume.
>>
>>2578006
>"inside"

please define
>>
>>2577998
you only need to be methodical
use a thing line weight for everything
then paintover all foreground shapes
then paintover midground with sightly less line weight
that's it, you have everything thin and you can add contrast where you need it, to make things readable
>>
Thanks both.

>>2578006
>Also, instead of keeping everything in black put them in color darker than the one you applied of the side, will give more volume.

Yeah, I was planning to color part of the lines in the end.

>>2578012
Well that makes sense, I'll try.

I'm surprised there seem to be no ref on line weight. I remember when I was young I heard an american inker talk about how he dealt with curves and specific forms with his line. It's not just a question of distance from the picture plane and relative importance, the line variation is also fairly important. I guess we have to learn the hard way.
>>
>>2578019
countless pro works are way better than some tutorial for this kind of stuffs.
>>
>>2577544
colors are ok, needs some value. most of your issues are with anatomy. her body from the breasts down is escaping from the side, and it would look better if she was standing upright instead of trying to force her legs to be folded, you dont know how the legs are supposed to work that way and you can tell you were guessing. her stomache is bulging in a way that doesnt make sense with how flat you drew her belly button. also try to avoid using those textury pencil type brushes for line work, i understand the appeal but its just making your work look messy
>>
>>2577638
the profile shot is really uncomfortable. she feels like a fish with how far back her eye is drawn, and how wide it is being viewed from the side. from that angle try to make it more narrow and dont try to make the iris a perfect circle since its being viewed from the side. also her nose doesnt feel flat enough for a cat, too pointy i think.

>>2577942
really cute, love whats going on.
i'd say take another shot at the panda bear, he looks too boxy and doesnt look as appealing as you drew the other bears.

>>2577528
her torso feels like a smashed tin can. theres so much weight and substance to her thighs and boobs its making her tiny flat torso even more noticeable. also her butt needs some major reworking.
>>
>>2578019
I can't really recommend specific resources either, but most good inkers take lighting into consideration, making lines thicker in areas of shadow and thinner towards the light source.

That said, also avoid having many thick lines meet. When two lines are very close to each other or intersect it often looks better if they have different line weights.
>>
>>2578097
Thanks.
>i'd say take another shot at the panda bear

Those colors are bad, they look like you applied some cheap filter over your colors. You haven't really fixed the uncanny valley effect, not the total uncuteness of their head shapes.

Honestly, you didn't plan a lot, you should scrap it entirely and start by building everything properly, sketch and colors. Don't waste more time on this.

values are a bit better, but still not really great.
use more whites and blacks. push more. hair and skin are still too closein value as well.
also again, don't have TOO much range in the skin (compared to other areas), it'll look plastic. the skin has subsurface scattering which is supposed to soften everything a bit.

try to keep everything with the same aproach, the wheel and the ground lack line art
you might want to try using line art layers on different modes so it adds up to the color blocks, keeping the original black lineart above, you can erase interior parts and leave the darker outlines to order distance in overlayed stuff, it's quick and adds a lot

also don't get over excited with color dodge kek
the speed reads really well tho

I did try quickly to draw over the lines but it just didn't work.I'll have to entirely redo the lines with a bigger brush I think.

Are there some digital tricks to deal with cases of line work thats either too thick or too thin? Maybe some morphological filter that helps?

Second question, are there some nice brush parameters that work well for linework/'inking'? Brush tip, dynamic of the brush variation... ?

no good.
face has the typical problems eyes don't have the same angle as the rest of the face. study the eyes within the eye socket and how that entire area is structured including the upper area with the nose and eyebrows.
head has no good structure. don't think that just because the hair is hiding it that you can neglect the cranium.
ears have the same issue as the cranium: you don't have to draw them, but you have to know it by feel.

>action poses and exaggerated movements

Do gestures everyday.

One key factor in making a pose dynamic is the center of gravity. Basically the figure is off balance because it's throwing its weight in a different direction and it has to catch itself. It's not a pose that one can hold.

Watch videos of people running and playing sports. Animation is a good choice for ref too, so check out sakugabooru.
